In this episode of the American Dream Factory Podcast, Nick Smoot sits down with Daron Babcock, Managing Director of Community Transformation at Stand Together Foundation and founder of Bonton Farms, for a powerful conversation about poverty, dignity, health, faith, entrepreneurship, and what it actually takes to transform a community.Daron's story begins far from the nonprofit world. He started his first business at fifteen, wrestled at the University of Oklahoma, worked in corporate America, helped run a beverage distributorship, launched a startup, and eventually entered the world of private equity after his company was acquired by Blackstone. But after the death of his first wife, Daron's life took a different turn. Through grief, friendship, faith, and a hunger for deeper human connection, he found himself drawn into Bonton, a struggling neighborhood in South Dallas. What began as a desire to be a better friend became a long-term commitment to living in proximity with people most of society had overlooked. At the time, Bonton faced staggering challenges. Median household income was around $19,000. High school graduation rates were low. Teen pregnancy, infant mortality, incarceration, chronic disease, and early death were painfully common. But Daron did not see a community defined by failure. He saw trapped potential. The first lesson was simple but profound: listen and respond.Residents told him they needed jobs, so Daron started with workforce development. But that effort quickly revealed deeper barriers. Many people were too sick to work. Others lacked transportation, access to fresh food, safe housing, health care, banking, or the confidence to articulate their own value. What looked like a jobs problem was actually a system problem. That insight led to the creation of Bonton Farms, which became far more than an urban farm. It became an economic engine, a health intervention, a gathering place, and a catalyst for local businesses including a coffee house, farm-to-table restaurant, security company, facility maintenance company, landscape business, and more. As dollars began circulating inside the neighborhood, wealth and confidence began to build.Daron explains that real community transformation requires more than charity. It requires building the conditions where people can flourish: relationships, economic opportunity, health, transportation, education, safe housing, and access to the basic tools needed to participate fully in life.Over eight years, Bonton saw dramatic improvement. Median household income more than doubled. Home values rose. Graduation rates improved. Teen pregnancy dropped. Crime declined significantly.Nick and Daron also explore the failures of modern philanthropy, the danger of toxic empathy, the limits of giving money without proximity, and the need to measure what actually matters. They discuss why downstream interventions alone will never solve upstream problems, why human flourishing must be measured by the people experiencing it, and why the future of community transformation depends on believing in people enough to hold them accountable to their own potential. This is a conversation about dignity, systems, friendship, health, faith, business, poverty, and the hard, slow, beautiful work of helping people and places become whole.Key ThemesProximity creates the will to change.Jobs alone are not enough.Poverty is a systems problem, not a people problem.Market-driven solutions can restore dignity.Health is foundational to human flourishing.Charity without accountability can become harmful.Human flourishing must be measured.

From high-speed chases to federal wiretaps, we trace the rise and fall of one of the city's most notorious criminal enterprises and the heavy price paid by the community in their wake.

Tokratno oddajo smo posvetili bontonu.
For Part 2 of our field trip to Bonton Farms, Camille and Rich sit down with Melissa Metoyer, the Senior Director of Health Equity and Community Impact, to talk about what it really looks like when a neighborhood takes care of each other. This conversation goes deep into health and wellness, but not in the abstract. We talk about real systems. Real people. And real outcomes. From medical and dental care to behavioral health, nutrition, financial stability, and workforce development, Melissa walks us through how Bonton Farms has built an integrated model where everything works together under one roof. What stood out most is how intentional it all is. This isn't charity. It's dignity. It's accountability. It's neighbors supporting neighbors in ways that actually change lives long term.Bonton Farms already had a national reputation for community transformation, but Melissa shares how the work has evolved into something scalable, measurable, and deeply human. This episode is about health equity, but more than that, it's about what happens when a community decides it deserves better and builds the systems to make it happen. If you care about health, wellness, community, or just seeing what's possible when people stop talking and start building, this one is worth your time.Check them out! https://www.bontonfarms.orgConnect with us!
Today on What In East Dallas Is Going On? we took a field trip to Bonton Farms and spent time with their CEO, Mark Jones. Mark is no ordinary CEO, and what's happening at Bonton Farms is nothing short of remarkable. This was our first time truly being on the ground out there, seeing the work, feeling the energy, and understanding just how powerful this model really is. What they've built should absolutely be duplicated across the country. We had an inspiring, honest, and eye opening conversation about community, leadership, food access, dignity, and what real change actually looks like when people decide to do the work. Rich and Camille host this special field trip episode, and it's one you'll be thinking about long after it ends.If you believe communities can be transformed when people show up with intention, this episode is for you.Connect with us! If you subscribe to an online news service, you're used to getting notifications about news stories the algorithm thinks might impact you. In Southeast Louisiana, you'll pretty regularly see variations on the headline, “Sea Level Rise Threatens Coastline” or “Louisiana Loses a Football Field of Wetlands Per Hour.” If you're like most people, you keep scrolling. Or, maybe you read the article, shake your head at the dire situation, but shrug it off because, well, what can you do? The reason you can afford to take a laissez faire attitude toward our disappearing coastline and wetlands, is because there are people who don't. There are people working every day, here in Baton Rouge, to preserve our piece of Planet Earth. Darius Bonton is the founder, owner and principal of Bonton Associates. Bonton Associates are an engineering company focused on designing and implementing infrastructure and transportation systems that allows us to build what needs to be built, and get where we need to go, without destroying the environment in the process. To the contrary, Bonton is all about delivering solutions to water and transportation issues that do more than just comply with environmental regulations, they actually improve our existing way of life. If you're looking for an organization whose name doesn't pull any punches, how about the Coalition To Restore Coastal Louisiana. “The Coalition” the title refers to is a wide range of organizations and people who partner to do an even wider range of activities to save our coast - from planting grasses in marshlands to giving expert advice to local, state and federal organizations. The Coalition is Louisiana's first statewide nonprofit organization dedicated to coastal restoration. They started out in 1988, and since March 2024 Ethan Melancon has been their Advocacy Director. In 1789 the poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge published a poem called The Rime Of The Ancient Mariner. You might not be familiar with the poem, but you probably know a line or two from it. Namely, “water water everywhere / Nor any drop to drink.” The poem is about a sailor stranded at sea, ironically, dying from dehydration while being surrounded by water. The theme of the poem is nature's indifference to human suffering. Whether or not nature is indifferent to us, we humans continue to do our best to adapt to the elements, and even downright defy them. We owe our very existence in Southeast, and Southwest, Louisiana to past generations' willingness to drain swamps, build levees, and bounce back from hurricanes. In our current generations, it's the work of companies like Bonton Associates and organizations like Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana who are continuing to organize, design and execute strategies for containing the power of nature that allow us to remain here, and hopefully will for generations to come.

In the current political environment, it may seem dubious to believe that one day 330 million Americans could wake up and believe that they're part of a civil society that recognizes their dignity as a human person. But it's not impossible. Daron Babcock believes there is hope. Human dignity ought to be the end-all-be-all that guides us. Restoring self-governance and cultivating human flourishing starts with community. Daron and Kevin address the importance of community in restoring lives and why a focus on independence, rather than dependence on decades of failed public programs, has been both the path to success in Bonton, Texas and a model for poverty-stricken cities across the country. Bonton, Texas, a small South Dallas neighborhood has long been plagued by crime, drugs, and gang violence. Daron Babcock shares how a Bonton, where 85% of the men have been to prison, has become a beacon of hope and a model for success. This week's guest: Moved by his personal beliefs, Daron Babcock couldn't sit idly by as he witnessed his neighbors in South Dallas be ravaged by institutional inequities. In 2012, he left a successful corporate career and moved from his home in North Dallas to serve inner-city residents of Bonton, Texas with his wife, Theda. Known for crime, violence, and extreme poverty, Bonton needed intervention at the macro-level – something Daron knew was not only necessary but possible. Daron is referred to as a “social entrepreneur,” having started multiple successful social ventures; Bonton Honey Company, The Market at Bonton Farms, a Coffee House, a Farmers Market, and CityBuild Housing to name a few. Of all his ventures, the most notable, though, is Bonton Farms, one of the largest urban farms in the United States nestled in a once-forgotten neighborhood in South Dallas. Hosted on Acast. Our interview guest is Elliott Cook, Director of Real Estate for Downtown Strategies. We spoke with him at ICSC about what makes for a vibrant downtown area in small- to mid-sized markets, how these markets can attract retailers to the area, and which types of retailers might be a fit for such business districts. In news, Big Lots reacts to a rough quarter by scaling back growth plans, Ulta Beauty continues to excel, and Bon-Ton may be getting (another) new lease on life.
On this podcast, Crystal and Nancy dig deep into the history of a historic structure in downtown Bozeman.
