What if shopping malls weren't just retail spaces, but carefully designed social hubs that reveal profound truths about American culture? Alexandra Lange's "Meet Me by the Fountain" takes us on a fascinating journey through the unexpected origins and evolution of one of America's most influential architectural forms.Throughout our conversation, Lange uncovers surprising connections between malls and urbanism. Despite their reputation as anti-urban spaces, malls offer valuable lessons in creating environments where people actually want to spend time. Climate control, ample seating, accessible restrooms, and opportunities for both planned meetings and chance encounters—these simple amenities are often overlooked in our public urban spaces but prove crucial for creating functional social environments. Show Notes:Author Recommended Reading: Radical Suburbs: Experimental Living on the Fringes of the American City by Amanda Hurley The Harvard Design School to Shopping edited by Rem KoolhausWhen Women Ran 5th Avenue: Glamour and Power at the Dawn of American Fashion  by Julie SatowClaire: The little girl who climbed to the top and changed the way women dress by Debra Scala GiokasTo help support the show, pick up a copy of the book through our Amazon Affiliates page at https://amzn.to/44G44gK or even better, get a copy through your local bookstore! To view the show transcripts, click on the episode at https://bookedonplanning.buzzsprout.com/ Follow us on social media for more content related to each episode:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/booked-on-planning/Twitter: https://twitter.com/BookedPlanningFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/bookedonplanningInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/bookedonplanning/

This is a special live episode recorded this past March at SXSW in Austin, Texas, and it features a conversation I had the honor of moderating with two powerhouse guests: Cate Havstad-Casad of Range Revolution and Daniel Mouw of Duckworth. The title of the panel was Farmer-Founded Brands Will Save American Fashion. At first glance, that might sound like a bold claim, but these two are actually doing the work to make it real. Cate is a designer, hatmaker, and regenerative rancher whose company, Range Revolution, is turning discarded cattle hides into regenerative high-end leather goods. Daniel is the president of Duckworth, a Montana-based wool company that's rebuilding the American supply chain– one sheep, sweater, and ranch at a time. Together, we dug into some big questions: What happened to American-made textiles? Why are most of us walking around wearing plastic? And what would it look like to rebuild rural economies from the ground up, using natural fibers like leather and wool, raised and processed responsibly, here in the United States? It might sound like we're talking fashion and manufacturing trends—but this is really a conversation about values, ecosystems, and the future of rural America. Cate and Daniel are funny, deeply thoughtful, and grounded in the realities of both agriculture and business. They bring hard-earned optimism to a conversation that too often gets bogged down in doom and gloom. And they make a compelling case for why fashion can be a vehicle for stewardship, beauty, and connection to the land. We also had a sharp, engaged audience that asked some truly insightful questions– you'll hear a few of those toward the end. Thanks to Cate and Daniel for the amazing conversation, thanks to SXSW for inviting us, and thank you for listening. --- SXSW Range Revolution Casad Family Farms Duckworth Full episode notes and links: https://mountainandprairie.com/sxsw/ --- TOPICS DISCUSSED: 2:10 - Introductions 6:35 - A history lesson in US fiber production 10:22 - Current supply chain challenges facing producers 16:17 - Why natural fibers are superior to synthetics 19:17 - The true cost of synthetics and fast fashion 23:17 - How Range Revolution and Duckworth are restoring economic power to ag producers 27:36 - The unique role of for-profit businesses in solving these challenges 33:13 - Positivity as a strategic business decision 37:09 - How do you scale this regenerative fashion movement? 40:32 - Embracing natural characteristics in design 42:06 - How to capture attention in today's information age 46:13 - What would an ideal community support system look like? 50:26 - Fabric frequencies! 52:53 - How to convert standard retail buyers into regenerative buyers 56:40 - Any collaboration with the EU fashion industry? --- ABOUT MOUNTAIN & PRAIRIE: Mountain & Prairie - All Episodes Mountain & Prairie Shop Mountain & Prairie on Instagram Upcoming Events About Ed Roberson Support Mountain & Prairie Leave a Review on Apple Podcasts

The Fashion Fête, a three-day event at the Ritz Carlton in New York, began on 4th November, 1914, offering New Yorkers their first glimpse of what we would now understand as a fashion show. With Parisian ateliers shut down due to the First World War, the U.S. editor of Vogue, Edna Woolman Chase, had proposed the event as a way to showcase the work of American designers: a novel concept in an industry that traditionally looked to France for inspiration. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly explain how Conde Nast (the man) was originally unsure about the precedent Conde Nast (the brand) would be establishing; reveal how Woolman Chase encouraged high society ladies to participate; and reveal how the War also led to other fashion breakthroughs including New York Fashion Week and the Met Gala…  Further Reading: • ‘The fascinating history of the catwalk show' (Harpers Bazaar, 2022): https://www.harpersbazaar.com/uk/fashion/a35783366/history-catwalk-show/ • ‘As Seen in Vogue: A Century of American Fashion in Advertising, By Daniel Delis Hill' (Texas Tech University Press, 2004):  https://www.google.co.uk/books/edition/As_Seen_in_Vogue/MvilOZhaRkAC?hl=en&gbpv=1&dq=fashion+fete+1914&pg=PA29&printsec=frontcover • ‘Paris Fashion in 1917 - AI Enhanced Film during WW1' (Glamour Daze, 2020): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Pjw12GSNBM Love the show? Close your eyes for a second and step back to the 1940s. Specifically, New York City in the 1940s. You're walking down the crowded street with a certain pep in your step because guess what? You're headed to your favorite department store, Lord & Taylor.  Department stores were not only the places where women shopped but also the places where women had power — power they did not have elsewhere at the time. Julie Satow joins us to talk about her new book: “When Women Ran Fifth Avenue: Glamour and Power at the Dawn of American Fashion,” and how women working in department stores in the early 1900s carved new paths for what it means to be a woman at work today. Takeaways: Department stores were not only places where women shopped, but also where they had power and influence. Women who worked in department stores had the opportunity to have successful careers and financial independence. The women highlighted in the book faced challenges and made sacrifices in order to succeed in a male-dominated industry. Today on the show we are talking about American fashion, specifically Empresses of Seventh Avenue: World War II, New York City, and the Birth of American Fashion, the brand-new book from Nancy MacDonell, out August 27. Prior to World War II, American designers were nothing short of second-class citizens to the French. But, after the Nazis invaded Paris during the war, everything changed for French fashion, and by the time the war ended in 1945, the American look was in fashion. What is the American look, you ask? Nancy answers that for us today, as well as introduces us to a fascinating cast of characters who helped birth American fashion: Elizabeth Hawes, Eleanor Lambert, and Claire McCardell, for starters. Soon, American fashion began to beat the French at their own game, and this is all a leadup to the Battle of Versailles, which we interviewed Robin Givhan about on the show last year. American fashion is thriving now—at $500 billion, it's the largest fashion industry in the world—but there would likely be no Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, Marc Jacobs, Tom Ford, Tory Burch, Halston, or Michael Kors without the Empresses of Seventh Avenue. These women have largely been forgotten to history—that is, until Nancy MacDonnell came along. Nancy is a fashion journalist and fashion historian that writes The Wall Street Journal column “Fashion with a Past,” which explores the historic roots of current fashion trends. Nancy has written everywhere from The New York Times to Elle, Vogue, and many other publications, and she's written five books, including The Classic Ten: The True Story of the Little Black Dress and Nine Other Fashion Favorites. In addition to her work as a writer, Nancy is also an adjunct lecturer in fashion history at the Fashion Institute of Technology. Let's take a listen to what she has to say.   Empresses of Seventh Avenue: World War II, New York City, and the Birth of American Fashion by Nancy MacDonell

"I want to manage expectations for people about what life is supposed to be like when you take on that much work or even what it means to be an entrepreneur," James said on the latest episode of the Glossy Podcast. "It's a lot, and burning out in that situation is normal, and failing sometimes is normal, too." Another of James's goals is to further her advocacy for more diversity in fashion. Also on the podcast, the multi-hyphenate discusses her role in the push for expanding DE&I initiatives in fashion. Plus, she digs into the less glamorous, yet vital, sides of entrepreneurship.

Julie also shows how social media has changed the lives of writers, who now must focus on being successful in several mediums for their books to become bestsellers. Her previous appearance on our show, where we discussed her book, "The Plaza" can be found here: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/axelbank-reports-history-and-today/id1521053272?i=1000488745167Information on Julie Satow's book can be found at https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/707784/when-women-ran-fifth-avenue-by-julie-satow/Julie Satow's website can be found at https://juliesatow.com/Support our show at https://patreon.com/axelbankhistory**A portion of every contribution is given to a charity for children's literacy** "Axelbank Reports History and Today" can be found on social media at https://twitter.com/axelbankhistoryhttps://instagram.com/axelbankhistoryhttps://facebook.com/axelbankhistory

Welcome back to I'd Rather Be Reading—both the start of season 12 and, later this week, our three-year anniversary! We've got so much good in store this season, and I'm thrilled, as ever, to be back with you after one long week of a hiatus. Today on the show we have Julie Satow, who is here to chat with me about her latest book, When Women Ran Fifth Avenue: Glamour and Power at the Dawn of American Fashion, which is out June 4. This book and this conversation take us back to the twentieth century department store, a place where women—whether you worked at the department store or were shopping there—could stake out newfound independence, whether you were in New York City or on Main Street USA. Back in the 1930s and going forward to the 1960s, women didn't rule many places—but they ruled the American department store. Not only is the American department store of those years examined—it's a whole world unto itself inside its walls—but it's a story told through the eyes of three women who rose to the top of the department store universe: Hortense Odlum of Bonwit Teller, who came to her husband's department store as a housewife tasked with attracting more shoppers like herself in the 1930s—and wound up running the company; then we have Dorothy Shaver of Lord & Taylor, who was a champion of American designers during World War II, before which U.S. fashions were almost completely copies of Parisian looks. Dorothy, by the way, was the first businesswoman to earn a $1 million salary. Then, in the 1960s, Geraldine Stutz of Henri Bendel modernized the department store and became an eternal trendsetter in the space. Not only did these women advance their own careers, but they opened doors for all women, as well. We've got style, glamour, women's empowerment, drama, trade secrets, wealth—it's the department store in all its glitz, decadence, and fun, and looks closely at the women who made the beautifully curated world of the twentieth century department store operate and opened doors for working women everywhere. I am so thankful that, through this book, Julie is ensuring that these three women aren't lost to history; their fingerprints are still felt today, in both fashion and business. Here to lead us on this journey is Julie Satow, who also wrote the fantastic book The Plaza: The Secret Life of America's Most Famous Hotel, which was a huge hit and critically acclaimed. Julie is an award-winning journalist, a regular contributor to The New York Times, and she has also been published in Travel + Leisure and Bloomberg Businessweek and appeared on NPR. Take a listen to our conversation!   Both by Julie Satow: When Women Ran Fifth Avenue: Glamour and Power at the Dawn of American Fashion The Plaza: The Secret Life of America's Most Famous Hotel

From beauty in our last throwback pick episode to fashion in this one, I have another of my heroes, Robin Givhan, on the program today. Robin is a fashion critic at The Washington Post and is a Pulitzer Prize winner, having won the Pulitzer Prize for Criticism in 2006—the first time that award was given to a fashion writer. Just as she herself has made history, her 2015 book The Battle of Versailles: The Night American Fashion Stumbled into the Spotlight and Made History talks about a night that was so culturally impactful it forever changed the history of fashion, specifically American fashion. The Battle of Versailles took place 50 years ago this month, and saw five French designers (Yves Saint Laurent, Pierre Cardin, Emanuel Ungaro, Marc Bohan, and Hubert de Givenchy) pitted against five American designers (Oscar de la Renta, Stephen Burrows, Halston, Bill Blass, and Anne Klein) in a competition concocted to raise money for the restoration of the Palace of Versailles. The deck was more than stacked against the American fashion designers—it was all but assured that victory would go to the French. But then, lo and behold, the Americans stole the show, and not just the American fashion industry but the global fashion industry changed forever. It is a fantastic conversation about a game-changing moment in history with one of the most respected journalists in the fashion stratosphere. I can't wait for you to listen.   The Battle of Versailles: The Night American Fashion Stumbled Into the Spotlight and Made History by Robin Givhan

Hear ye! Hear ye! The event of all events: The Met Gala was here, and we need to take a step back and celebrate fashion's biggest night! Get our latest episode now!   Never heard of the Met Gala? Ever been to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City? Doesn't matter.    All you need to know is that this is THE celebrity event of the year featuring the most outrageous costumes and looks curated by top designers, which raises money for the The Met's Costume Institute each year.     If you want to see all the outfits? Please head over to Holly's Pinterest board and follow along!   No matter your movie career, income bracket, or societal stature, it's the coolest of the cool kids that get to go.    As exclusive as it is political, to be invited is somewhat equal to being invited to a ball hosted by royalty. You just don't say no. You show up, with bells on. Literally.     The theme this year was centered around the “Gilded Age” in American Fashion, focusing on New York's elite in the last decades of the 19th Century, around 1870 to 1900.   Think white ties, large hair with hats to match, opera gloves dresses to the floor, and very tightly nipped corsets galore.   So, join Holly and Nolan this week to see who understood the assignment, and who forgot their homework. They have graded the papers, and the results are in:    A+ Awards:   Blake Lively and husband Ryan Reynolds were the co-chairs of this year's Gala.  As such, Blake pulled off an epic dress reveal for her arrival on the Met steps, where gala assistants untied the bow of her shimmery rose gold strapless gown by Atelier Versace to reveal a bright blue-green train underneath.    Her rose gold opera gloves also changed to blue-green, with her colors paying homage to New York City architecture, her crown paying homage to the Statue of Liberty, and the golden dress design symbolizing the Empire State Building.    We. Are. Not. Worthy.   Anna Wintour, the Queen of All Fashion, wore a colorful ensemble Chanel which featured a feather-embellished cape, and a long matching skirt that flowed down to the ground.   Of course, her outfit was gorgeous, and she even swapped out her classic sunglasses for a TIARA– which she owns! But Nolan is just bored with her same dress profile year after year.    Sarah Jessica Parker, as always, was our star student with extra credit and the teacher's pet. Her dramatic Christopher John Rodgers ball gown and exaggerated hat proved she understood the assignment again this year.    Probably Nolan's favorite of the night was Bee Carrozzini Shaffer (Anna Wintour's daughter) in in a dramatic, lacy black Alexander McQueen gown. Elegant with a capital E!   And Kaia Gerber in Alexander McQueen. She was straight out of a fairy tale.   Holly has just become the president of the Winnie Harlow Fan Club. Winnie looked like an absolute angel. Like from heaven. She wore a whimsical white tulle creation by Iris Van Herpen with an amazing headpiece. No one does the Met Gala like Iris van Herpen. No. One.   Michelle Yeoh: The epitome of GORGEOUS, and totally age appropriate, she wore a green upcycled silk-faille gown by Prabal Gurung. The piece featured a sharply draped bodice with an off-the-shoulder silhouette, complete with a sweeping skirt with a fluted hem. The elegant ensemble was finished with a dramatic matching cape. Amplifying the glamour of Yeoh's outfit was a show-stopping diamond and pearl Tasaki statement necklace — also designed by Gurung.    Thank you, Madame! A++   Alicia Keys in Ralph Lauren. She looked BEYOND in a NYC skyline cape and gown. TO DIE FOR.   Another love: Lizzo (and her flute!) in Thom Brown. That Coat!  Nolan wants to wear it to Whole Foods. He wants to wear it to the bodega. He wants to wear it everywhere. It took 32,000 man hours to make that coat, and we are here to celebrate it!   Awkwafina arrived in a custom Gucci salmon pink and multicolor tulle puff sleeve dress. Holly says she has never looked better!   Cardi B. “Goes for the Gold” in Versace– and was very well dressed. Holly loves, not Nolan's thing. The gown was wrapped in Versace gold chains and coins.   La La Anthony in an off-the-shoulder burgundy gown: What was the symbolism with her outfit?    Holly didn't like it, Nolan said they may be more to the backstory, but these two just could not agree.   And speaking of not agreeing, our hosts spend WAY too much time discussing Kacey Musgraves' floor-length Prada gown that featured jeweled embellishments and a low-cut bodice that was adorned with a bow. Musgraves completed her look with black satin gloves, an ostrich fan and plenty of jewels, including a stunning diamond necklace. Holly LOVED!!    Who forgot to do to the homework?   Billie Eilish opted for a pale green and cream Gucci corset gown, crystal-adorned black choker, and a messy-chic updo. Nolan thinks the color is terrible. And thinks it looks too prostitute-y.    That being said, he thinks it is the best she has looked in a long time. She seemed confident what she was wearing. He liked that she was wearing something with a lot of shape and structure and still felt confident and it made him happy for her because he hopes that now she'll be a little bit more confident in herself.   What did Holly think? “She looked like she was a madam and an 1800s whorehouse.”  Allllrighty then!   Kylie Jenner made Nolan want to run into oncoming traffic. It was just so bad, in so many ways. “It looks like a sad mix between the bride with no budget and bad taste. A 1950s nurse.”  Just no.   Except, it was so bad, it was good! It was so bad that it has it has sparked a million memes. They are hysterical and all over Instagram and that makes up for how bad that outfit was. It was insulting.   NOTE: If you want to honor the late Virgil Abloh of OFF WHITE, you wear one of his great dresses. Not that trainwreck. Period.    Camila Cabello in Atelier Prabal Gurung. Nolan says no to the dress. Holly says it looked like a confetti cake with skittles inside.   Emma Stone wearing a white knee-length flapper-style dress by Louis Vuitton. Did she draw the Louis Vuitton short straw?    Anderson.Paak –  no bowl haircuts, please. Ever.    Emma Corrin from the Crown in a Miu Miu oversized jacket and shorts with a top hat.  Not elegant.   Kourtney Kardashian in Thom Browne. She had no clue what the theme was and said so on national TV. RUDE. And the outfit she wore was completely wrong for her body type. Major FASHION CRIME!!   And - what about the trend to have influencers invited to this prestigious event?  Is it ok, or no?  Nolan simply says: “Go Home.”   Nolan had an interesting take on Shawn Mendes, that may or may not have anything to do with the Gilded Age or Met Gala, but he muses:  How long are we pretending Shawn Mendes is straight? We mean…. Really.    And OMG: Glenn Close in pink Valentino! We mean PINK! Wow, she killed it, AND got the assignment.   Okay, we talked smack about just everybody. If you want to SEE all these outfits, head over to Holly's Pinterest board and you can judge for yourself.    FASHION CRIMES PODCAST “The Best Fashion Friend You Never Knew You Needed” www.fashioncrimespodcast.com

Then we jump into the VMAs, which always feel like a sexy train wreck compared to the rest of the award shows but one celebrity in particular really gave us her all and we're just excited to have something interesting to look at. A lastly, we do an (almost) live reaction to the Met Gala outfits! The theme this year was "American Fashion" and despite a few showings of red, white, and blue, the good ol' stars and stripes just didn't translate in this year's looks. And of course, as always, we recap our outfits from last week and give you the who, what, and where of what we put on our bodies last week. Enjoy!
