Hundreds of thousands of workers have mobilized in response to multiple calls for general strikes, and the reacitonary government of Yoon Seok Yeol has responded in force. This January, the National Intelligence Service, South Korea's equivalent to the FBI and CIA rolled into one agency, raided the offices of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions. In that same time, military and geopolitical tensions in the region have been rapidly intensifying. What is going on? What is the state of organized labor in South Korea, and how have imperialist and capitalist pressures, especially from the US, shaped the terrain upon which working people across the Korean Peninsula are struggling to live and work with dignity? Dave Scott, Engagement Editor at The Christian Monitor, tells us about remarkable individuals who use generosity, hope, and innovation to inspire others to uplift their fellow human beings. With origin stories and personal anecdotes, we hear how listening and trust are essential elements in constructive change and finding common ground. We hear about what a 12-year-old can teach us about empathy and kindness; how the Sewing Machine Project has repaired thousands of lives around the world, and why LavaMaeX is providing hot showers, pop-up care villages, and radical hospitality for homeless people in California. Co-hosts: Richard Davies and Ashley Milne-Tyte.

Points and miles guru Richard Kerr stops by and hijacks the show this week! If you enjoy the podcast, I hope you’ll take a moment to leave us a rating. That helps us attract more listeners! Richard Kerr, Loyalty and Engagement Editor for The Points Guy, seemed like the perfect person to take me to task for everything in my wallet, and the sizable stack of cards that don't even fit into my wallet. You be the judge and give me your own letter grade! If you have a suggestion for a future show find me on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram and let me know what you’d like to hear about!
This week, we hear from Adriana Lacy, Audience Engagement Editor at the LA Times. She launched a dedicated Instagram account for the LA Times’ archival photos late last year, so we talked about where those images are sourced from, what the response has been, and how they’ve used historical images of protests to add context to the events of the past few weeks. She also discusses the LA Times’ wider social media and audience engagement strategy, as well as her own Journalism Internships project and the importance of mentoring. In the news roundup, the team tries desperately to stay cheery around some good news for publishers. We don’t succeed.
Though the CDC now recommends everyone wear a cloth mask in public, it has changed its stance in the past. Hosts Mina Kim of KQED in San Francisco and Marty Moss-Coane of WHYY in Philadelphia peel back the complicated layers to the act of wearing a face mask. It's become a divisive political issue, leading to protests and complaints from residents who don’t want to wear them. For others, it’s a matter of personal safety that has nothing to do with health. Will black men be stereotyped for wearing a mask? Now that more businesses are reopening, what’s on people’s minds about face masks? And how do we navigate tense situations? Our guests include: Seema Yasmin, public health doctor and epidemiologist, director of the Stanford Health Communication Initiative University, and an Emmy-award winning journalist; Will Joyce, mayor of Stillwater, Oklahoma, whose city reopened with a plan that included a strong recommendation for masks, requiring employees and customers to wear masks; and Chris Norris, journalist and professional drummer, currently serving as WHYY’s Community Contributor and Engagement Editor.

"They appreciate that authentic conversation. There's a hunger for that kind of conversation." What does it look like if we take the shouting and the elbowing out of the dialogue and actually listen to each other? What would the news look like then? Bill Manny, the Engagement Editor of the Idaho Statesman, is trying to figure that out. He's sick of the lack of civility. Jimmy and I changed up the format: the three of us sat down for a deep conversation on storytelling and how the nonprofit sector interacts with the media. Help Bill in his new role as the Engagement Editor of the Idaho Statesman. Throw him a follow on Twitter (@whmanny). Read his article where he announces how he wants to connect with you in this new role (click here for the article). What stories do you have to tell? Have you lived in that tension that Bill describes, trying to push your social justice solutions but only get covered on the sensational? Tell us about it on Facebook at We All Do Better.
