A PhD candidate in the Department of English Language and Literature, her dissertation focuses on encounters between imperial objects and colonial bodies in the British Empire, especially in British India. She hails from Assam, India. What draws an editor to a particular essay? In Chandrica Barua's case, her criteria definitely include: whether the essay is inventive in form (for instance, by being a hybrid or “braided” essay that brings together different topical strands) and if it surprises the reader by where it goes. Also of note are factors like: does it have a compelling title, a strong start, and a satisfying moment of closure? The first of the essays discussed here comes from a special, forthcoming African literature issue. Does Emelda Nyaradzai Gwitimah's “My Hairdresser Is Dead” have an intriguing title? Absolutely, along with a sense of humor missing in many memoirs. In turn, another African essay, “Side Pieces” by Chike Frankie Edozien, looks at how gay sexual practices both operate outside of marriage norms and yet, in the end, conform to those norms to a degree. From the 2024 Winter issue, we discussed Julia Kolchinsky Dasbach's “Zombie Tag,” about a Jewish refugee from the Ukraine and her autistic son obsessed with lizards because their identities change through camouflage. Finally, a visual essay, “Enacting Masculinity” by McCain Thomas, uses redacted legislative proposals from four Southern states to show how oppressive and misguided attempts can be to limit the rights of transgender people. Remarkable Marketing

Marketers are trained to create targeted content for specific personas. But creating a message that's open to interpretation is a highly effective strategy that strikes a cord across personas.Because your audience will fill in the blank with how the message is meaningful for them. So instead of speaking to pain points specific to one role, speak to the human pain points. Maybe your product is a solution for a task that takes too much time or is overly complex, for example. Nobody likes feeling like they're wasting too much of their workday on one task. So talk about how your product saves time or simplifies their work. So in this episode of Remarkable, we're listening to Zach Bryan's song, “Something in the Orange,” the hit song that resonates with a wide range of listeners. That's because Zach Bryan's lyrics are open to interpretation. And we're talking with Todd Raphael, Head of Content at SkyHive, about how you can use this strategy in your content marketing to resonate with a wider audience. We'll also cover the best time to brainstorm content ideas and why you could easily double your output with one simple idea. So grab your cowboy hat and stare off into the sunset while you listen to this episode of Remarkable. About our guest, Todd RaphaelTodd Raphael is Head of Content at SkyHive, a cloud-based workforce management and reskilling software provider. Todd joined SkyHive in November 2022. He previously served as Head of Content at eightfold.ai. He also worked as Editor in Chief at ERE Media for over 14 years, and prior to that, Online Editor at Workforce.About SkyHiveRecognized as a top AI innovation by Forbes, a Gartner Cool Vendor in HCM, and a World Economic Forum Technology Pioneer, SkyHive is cognifying the world's labor economy and fundamentally changing how we work, learn, and live. Zach Bryan started writing music when he was 14, and putting it online when he was still serving in the Navy. His song “Heading South” ended up going viral after he posted a video of himself playing it on TikTok. He has two self-released albums, DeAnn and Elisabeth, and is now signed to Warner Records. His first studio album, American Heartbreak, debuted at number five on the US Billboard 200 with over 70,000 album-equivalent units. The 34-song triple album has been certified Platinum as of June 2023, with over 1 million units sold.“Something in the Orange” was Bryan's first charting single. He told Today's Country Radio that the song wasn't about “some deep, dark thing.” He came up with the idea while sitting in a cabin in Wisconsin watching the sun set. It's now certified 4x Platinum. His video for “Something in the Orange” starts with a message, saying, “Thousands of videos were submitted by my listeners for the video of Something in the Orange. I decided to make this myself because it's a feeling I know we've all shared at some point. Thank you guys for contributing and thank you guys for listening.” His idea to crowdsource videos reflects an appreciation of his fans, a sharing of energy, and a homegrown, grassroots effort true to his roots and the nature of country music. The video is a compilation of sunset videos taken by fans. What B2B Companies Can Learn From “Something in the Orange”:Leave room for interpretation in your marketing message to resonate with a wider audience. Create a marketing message that lets your audience fill in the gaps. “Our tool saves you time to do more of what you love.” Could mean spending time with loved ones, walking their dog, doing a hobby…your message doesn't have to be specific to strike a nerve. Todd says when he was looking at comments on Zach Bryan's video for “Something in the Orange, “the song means all of these different things to different people. It's a song about their grandma. It's a song about their dog. It's a song about their ex-boyfriend. It's all these different things.” So let your marketing speak to multiple personas by leaving room for the imagination.Create two versions of your content. One is the typical kind of B2B, serious, technical content. The other is conversational and human. Both can be your brand voice. Ian says, “We make content and we write it in a certain way, in a certain language and a certain approach. And then we just say, ‘Well, this is our brand voice,' as if that's how everybody just automatically wants to read stuff. You could get way more mileage by creating a second version of that same piece of content and writing it in an extremely conversational, approachable voice that's actually tied to a human being.” Zach Bryan wrote two versions of “Something in the Orange,” So create a second, conversational version to humanize your brand.Brainstorm content when you're doing everyday routine tasks. Todd says it's when people do their best thinking. He says, “We're walking the dog, we're riding a bike, we're doing something that's mindless and repetitive. It's always when we think of our best ideas. It's never during a brainstorming meeting.” Zach Bryan was sitting at a campfire when he wrote “Something in the Orange,” and it's during that contemplative time that the lyrics came to him easily. So take notes when you're out and about, and have a great idea for content.Quotes*”We choose the words for what words work best for SEO, instead of what emotions we want to provoke. People used to think of two different audiences, right? It was like pain avoiders and pleasure seekers.  Like, this car will keep you safe, versus this car is so much fun and so cool. And I think maybe sometimes we get away from that.” - Todd Raphael*”There's a lot of B2B content that is just done one cookie cutter way. And we always talk about repurposing for a different medium. But some people want the creative to feel different, to read differently.” - Ian FaisonTime Stamps[00:55] Meet Todd Raphael, Head of Content at SkyHive[1:36] What's Zach Bryan's song 'Something in the Orange' about?[2:39] What does Todd do at SkyHive?[4:10] Learn more about Zach Bryan's musical journey[8:01] What was the impact of 'Something in the Orange'?[11:30] How can you harness the power of storytelling in marketing?[24:00] What's the content strategy at SkyHive?[29:08] How does Todd prove the ROI of content?LinksListen to “Something in the Orange”Watch the music videoConnect with Todd on LinkedInLearn more about SkyHiveAbout Remarkable!Remarkable! is created by the team at Caspian Studios, the premier B2B Podcast-as-a-Service company. Practical AI Podcast Special: Lessons from local media

Media Voices Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 12, 2023 63:36

Our special podcast documentary explores how local media organisations have got started with AI projects, the benefits they're seeing, the challenges they've faced and what advice they would give to other publishers looking to get into AI. This episode and our corresponding report have been made possible with the support of United Robots. There's one topic everyone is talking about right now: AI. Since ChatGPT burst onto the scene in November 2022, the potential of AI tools have become very clear to the otherwise uninitiated. Now, everyone from politicians to teachers, technologists, artists and writers are having to grapple with the explosion in use of generative AI and the very real impact it will have on our everyday lives. But away from the hype of ChatGPT, Bard and other headline-grabbing AI chatbots and generators, it's important to remember that AI isn't a new area for publishers. From simple tasks like social media posts to content recommendations right through to more complex tasks like distilling mass datasets in a way that reporters can make sense of, we've been using these tools for a number of years. For publishers of all shapes and sizes, artificial intelligence is still a largely untapped area. Some prominent brands like BuzzFeed have made industry headlines by announcing their plans to use AI to generate quizzes, while CNET won't be the last publication to get in trouble for letting major errors slip through on articles written by robots. We're buckling up for an absolute tsunami of AI-generated content - more than any of us will be able to consume in our lifetimes. The opportunity for publishers, then, as pointed out by Douglas McCabe of Enders Analysis, is to distinguish themselves from the rest of the internet. This doesn't mean shunning AI. Instead, we should be looking at how we can use it to free writers, reporters and journalists up to do what they do best. Looking to local media Some of the best examples of how this can work in practice can be seen in local media. Often, such organisations have fewer resources than big names like the New York Times or Bloomberg, and certainly aren't able to indulge in speculative development and testing of these tools. Instead, there has to be a clearly defined use case, straightforward implementation, and measurable return on investment. This has been the focus of a new report from Media Voices: Practical AI for Local Media. In this report, Peter Houston explores the myths and misconceptions surrounding AI, what it looks like in practice in local media organisations, the benefits it brings, and how to get started. The report also includes five case studies from local publishers around the world - who you'll be hearing from throughout this episode - and how they've been using AI tools for years to create and publish journalism that gives local media an edge. We've focused on local news organisations, but the processes they went through internally to explore and apply AI tools can benefit publishers of all shapes and sizes, so it's still relevant if you're looking at what AI can do for you. In this corresponding documentary-style episode, we hear directly from the publishers themselves and other industry experts about how they approached finding use cases for AI, getting staff on board, tackling issues that came up, and the advice they would give to other publishers looking to get started themselves. Interviewees: Elin Stueland, Online Editor, Stavanger Aftenblad Joseph Hook, Editor, RADAR AI Jens Pettersson, Head of Editorial Development, NTM Luuk Willekens, Data & Innovation Manager, NRC Media Cynthia DuBose, Vice President, Audience Growth & Content Monetization, McClatchy Professor Charlie Beckett, Director, The Journalism AI Project, LSE Cecilia Campbell, Chief Marketing Officer, United Robots Thanks to United Robots who have sponsored our Practical AI for Local Media report and this episode. Their mission is to empower local news publishers by helping free up reporter time, expand coverage and grow the business by providing routine reporting produced by robots on structured data on topics like sports and real estate. They've helped a number of publishers cited in the report get started with automated content, and Cecilia Campbell and her team are hugely knowledgeable about the real opportunities in AI for publishers. It's a full 90 minutes plus injury time in this week's bumper show with learnings, yearnings and plenty of intelligent non league insight. First up with Tim Fuell and Dave Anderson Paul Doswell on leaving Sutton United and taking on the manager's job at Havant & Waterlooville, in a very frank and revealing interview. Also returning to the show Chris Monroe, Chairman at Basford United, no promotion for them this season - 5 in 7 seasons perhaps enough for now - but a new big name manager in Steve Chettle and a whopping 4 year contract. Hear why the club have taken such a big step and continue to evolve at apace. It's a few seasons since Les Hare was last on the show but after seeing his beloved North Ferriby United go to the wall earlier this season, he has been quick to react and help launch a phoenix club that will take on the name and participate at Step 5 next season. After making the National League and lifting the FA Trophy last time he was in charge, this time it is all about the enjoyment of being back in the football community. Hoping to emulate those who come before him Kevin Oakes has seen his Sunday side for a few friends develop quickly in recent seasons to rise through the pyramid and this season win the Southern Counties East Division One in a dramatic last weekend ready to take their place in step 5 next term. Can Welling United be the next Basford United? Online Editor at The Non League Paper David Richardson is perhaps the busiest man in non league this week. With play-offs taking place and not taking place he has been keeping us all up to date with developments up and down the country and offers a round up of what has and hasn't happened and what may be yet to come.

It's all about Change. As Dave Anderson changes direction with his Chertsey Town team to seek league focus ahead of their Wembley cup final, Dave and Tim Fuell speak with three clubs where change has been good. First up Gary Johnson returns to the show. After taking charge at Torquay United in September he has led the club to the top of the table in the National League South. On Saturday they travel to second placed Woking knowing an away win would leave them 10 points clear. Des Flanders faced imposed change as Chairman of Met Police FC last summer who were moved from the Isthmian League into the Southern League. Financial fears threaten their future and their long-term manager resigned as did many of the squad, but less than a year on the club is going from strength to strength and gunning for the play-offs. Currently third in the Southern League Premier South, they travel to second-placed Taunton Town this weekend. Colwyn Bay have had a dramatic last month. New board members and a switch from the English Pyramid to the Welsh league system have all been mooted and agreed. Manager Craig Hogg has embraced the new project and been rewarded with a 5 year contract, he explains why he thinks it is the club will now be able to thrive. Online Editor at The Non League Paper David Richardson discusses how a week is a long time at the top of the National League and the irony of Gateshead and Ebbsfleet United meeting in league action this week with both clubs' sets of fans unclear of what the future holds. Plus the Step 4 side resigning despite a mid-table finish in their first year up from Step 5 and the club parting ways with their manager with play-offs assured.

Flying solo, Tim Fuell speaks with Wrexham Captain Shaun Pearson as they top the National League and travel this weekend to second-placed Leyton Orient. Top and clear of the chasers in the Isthmian South East Division and finally planning for their own home ground, Cray Wanderers are having a season to savour. Chairman Gary Hillman however, has years of experience and with second placed Horsham visiting this weekend and more play-off chasers still to play, he's not counting his chickens just yet. As the club in a, one pub, one shop village, Sticker AFC have an immediate quirky charm, but that's not much help on the field, as they remain the only club in the top 6 steps of the non league game without a league win this season. Bottom of the South West Peninsula League Premier Division it's not been the season they had hoped for but manager Andy Avery is clearly proud of his club, the committee and the fact that in non league you enjoy the highs and ride the lows. David Richardson, Online Editor at The Non League Paper is back discussing the OWNAFC app, the weekend's big National League matches and Staines Town becoming the first club in the pyramid to be officially relegated.

Aflevering nummertje twin-tig! All part of the plan! Waarom? Omdat we mooie onderwerpen bespreken. Have fun! Podcast #657: Dual Lamp Projectors

HDTV and Home Theater Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 17, 2014 39:09

Dual Lamp Projectors Grant Clauser, Technology and Online Editor at Electronic House, recently posted an article titled “Home Theater Projector Tips for Multipurpose Rooms.” The basic premise is that projectors aren't just for man caves or dedicated theater rooms, but can be used very effectively in what we've traditionally called a family room but what a lot of integrators are now calling media rooms, multipurpose rooms or hybrid entertainment rooms.   The article makes three suggestions for optimizing the projector experience in a less traditional projector room. The first two are about placement. In a dedicated theater room, the room is built to accommodate the projector, so placement isn't an issue. In a family room, it may be difficult to find a good spot for it, so you have to be creative. A long throw lens and lens shift capabilities could come in really handy.   “...long throw projectors can help overcome design or placement complications. In a dedicated home theater, with the lights off, it doesn't matter as much if the projector is hanging from the ceiling in plain sight. But in a room that's also used for other family gatherings, an out-in-the-open projector is an eyesore. Projectors with long throw lenses allow the unit to be installed against (or even inside) a far wall, out of the way.”   “...lens shift (both vertical and horizontal) can be important in a multipurpose room. Architectural features (walls, windows, fireplaces, columns) can make ideal placement difficult, so mechanical lens shift can help ... get the projector targeted properly.”   We've talked about the article, or similar posts, before. But one point we haven't spent much time on is the third suggestion: dual lamp projectors. Since it is much harder to control ambient light in a multipurpose room, high light output is key. The brighter the room, the brighter the projector needs to be. In a dark room, the projector should ideally do 16 foot-Lamberts. By comparison, LCD and plasma televisions can do much, much more, with some LED models capable of 80 foot-Lamberts and higher. The article recommends at least 40 foot-lamberts for a multipurpose room that may have ambient light issues.   Since your projector specs will use lumens, not foot-Lamberts as their brightness specification, the article suggests taking 20-30 percent off the number, then divide it by the screen area for a foot-Lambert number that's closer to accurate, but still not perfect. The distance to the screen and screen gain also has an impact on that number. To overcome this, they recommend using a dual-lamp projector. This allows you to run a single lamp like a traditional projector at night or when the room is dark, but run both lamps for a brighter picture during the day.   We haven't spent much time on dual lamp projectors on the show because they are harder to find, especially for DIY installations. They tend to be specific to the custom install channel and are usually quite expensive. But for those contemplating a rear projection setup in a room where you may not be able to control the ambient light, projector brightness may be the thing holding you back. So we decided to take a look at Amazon to see what options were available for DIY. We found two. Both from NEC. Both affordable. Neither of them great options.   The truth is, dual lamp projectors are difficult to find. Voice analytics-once the stuff of science fiction and Echelon speculation-is now commercially available and is being used by call centers processing hundreds of thousands of calls per day to authenticate identity, spot key words and phrases, and even detect when a caller is angry or frustrated. It is also being used by large financial institutions for fraud prevention. These same tools can be applied to detect and deter social engineering attacks. This presentation will discuss the current off-the-shelf applications of voice analytics and how these methods can be applied to detecting and preventing social engineering attacks. Doug Mohney is the News and Online Editor for VON Magazine, writing about VoIP and IP Communications, including security issues relating to VoIP, wireless and corporate IT management. He also contributes to The Inquirer website and Mobile Radio Technology magazine on a regular basis. In his pre-media life, he was involved with two Internet start-ups (DIGEX, SkyCache/Cidera), watching one grow big and one go bust."
