Do you ever try focusing on just one thing at a time? What's one way you avoid distractions? Today, Jay's diving into a struggle we all know too well: distraction. If you've ever found yourself scrolling on your phone without even thinking about it, you're definitely not alone. Jay breaks down why it's so hard to stay focused in a world full of constant notifications and packed schedules. But this episode isn't about making us feel guilty—instead, it's about giving us simple, doable strategies to actually make focus easier. Jay's packed this episode with practical tips, like creating “no-phone zones” at home and setting tech-free times during the day to really be present. One of the standout strategies he shares is the Pomodoro Technique—working in short, focused bursts with breaks in between to keep your brain sharp and productive. Jay's main message? Real productivity isn't about doing more, faster—it's about doing things better. He even shares some unique Ayurvedic advice, like chewing each bite 32 times (yes, really!) to emphasize how slowing down can improve our lives. In this episode, you'll learn: How to Slow Down for Better Productivity How to Stay Present in Conversations How to Find Calm by Unplugging How to Build Stronger Focus Habits How to Reclaim Your Attention By setting intentional boundaries, slowing down, and practicing mindfulness, we can take back our attention in a way that enhances productivity, deepens our relationships, and brings peace to our daily lives.  With Love and Gratitude, Jay Shetty What We Discuss: 00:00 Intro 01:46 Have You Been Feeling More Distracted? 04:03 What Research Says About the Decline in Focus 06:12 Majority of Us Can't Multitask 09:00 Doing Things Slower Makes Better Progress 11:43 #1: The Pomodoro Technique 13:38 #2: No Tech Zones, No Tech Times 15:56 #3: Go For a Walk, Stay Off Your Phone 20:34 #4: Finish What You StartSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

At a superficial level, Soil is a gardening memoir, full of gorgeous descriptions of plants and getting your hands in the soil. But the garden in question is a political gesture, an act of resistance and an assertion of belonging. Camille T. Dungy uproots the staid monoculture of the suburban garden, and takes a fierce, critical look at its assumptions. In this conversation, we talk about the way that gardens can become a means of social control and conformity, but also an expression of freedom and solidarity that crosses generations. We also touch on the idea of outsidership, and the difference between choosing to stay at the edges, and being forced out of the centre. The wolf carries an almost unbearable amount of symbolism in western culture, encapsulating the predatory, the carnal, the supernatural and the ravenous. But in her book Wolfish, Erica Berry suggests that it's time to understand wolves differently: as tender, as hunted, as guardians of the landscape. What's more, those evil qualities may be better attributed to ourselves than to wolves. Berry weaves memoir with natural history, cultural critique, folklore and conservation to show that wolves have too often been a cypher for all our fears, and that this has left them under threat of extinction. In this fascinating and wide-ranging conversation, recorded as part of Katherine's True Stories Book Club, Erica discusses her experiences with wolves real and imagined. Within the past two years, South Korea has seen major labor actions, including a general strike in October of 2021, and major crackdowns on organized labor, including the national intelligence agency raiding the offices of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions in January of this year. In that same time, military and geopolitical tensions in the region have been rapidly intensifying. What is going on? What is the state of organized labor in South Korea, and how have imperialist and capitalist pressures, especially from the US, shaped the terrain upon which working people across the Korean Peninsula are struggling to live and work with dignity? I stumbled across Dacher Keltner's work when I was first researching Enchantment, and now - for the final episode in this season - I'm honoured to speak to him about Awe: The New Science of Everyday Wonder and How It Can Transform Your Life. Dacher's research attempts to understand this very fleeting, ineffable emotion. He and his colleagues have shown that awe induces a feeling of being small within a vast universe - a radical shift into context. What's more, by absorbing ourselves in awe, we become better people, more motivated to go out and do good. In this episode, we explore how it feels to experience awe, how we can seek it out in the everyday, and we share the personal experiences of awe that have inspired both of our books. Dacher Keltner is a professor of psychology at UC Berkeley and the director of the Greater Good Science Center. He has over 200 scientific publications and six books, including Born to Be Good, The Compassionate Instinct, and The Power Paradox. He has written for many popular outlets, from The New York Times to Slate. He was also the scientific advisor behind Pixar's Inside Out. Marjolijn van Heemstra believes that we can change the world by gazing into the night sky. Her book, In Light Years There's No Hurry, explores the ‘overview effect', a personal transformation reported by astronauts who have seen the earth from space. People who've experienced this rare view often report an ethical shift taking place, a new sense of mission in their lives. They come to see themselves as guardians of their planet, rather than its passive citizens. Clearly not all of us can - or want to - leave the atmosphere to gaze over the earth from space. But in this thought-provoking conversation, Marjolijn makes a case for us learning to draw on the overview effect from where we stand, suggesting that this could lead us to become better stewards of our environment, and form closer bonds with the communities around us. Marjolijn is a Dutch theatre-maker, journalist and poet who has recently been named Amsterdam's Poet Laureate. Her most recent work has focused on reacquainting ourselves with darkness, and this includes her creative project The Night Watch, and the Amsterdam Dark Festival, of which she is the founder. Kerri ní Dochartaigh's writing rings with a sense of connection between this world and the otherworld, and nowhere is it expressed more clearly than in her latest book, Cacophony of Bone. Here are pages full of subtle signs that are legible only to those who are in the practice of seeking them. It's a work of plain mysticism, a very personal representation of direct contact with the sacred. At its roots, it's about perception: how we allow it, honour it, foster it. How we can allow ourselves to encounter beauty and transcendence in the everyday. But there's also a hidden political dimension to Kerri's work. She's showing us a way of life that's largely been lost, a mode of perception that has been deliberately crushed and denied. It's a spiritual mode that's democratic, resistant, dangerous. These times are ripe for it.In this interview, we talk about the practice of everyday mysticism, its connection to Kerri's Irish heritage, and the ways that reading has been warped by contemporary life. A visual artist, writer, musician, speaker and podcaster, I always see her as a communicator first and foremost. She draws on all these different modes of expression to facilitate the sheer urgency of what she has to say. In this episode, I talk with Morgan about the ways that her work ushers us towards a kind of reenchantment with life itself - but, in all honesty, I quickly lost control of the whole interview. Like me, Morgan is autistic, and I got lost in the joy of spending an hour in her thoughtful, inquisitive company. This is a conversation about how we see our work and the world around us, and how creativity helps us to connect. Morgan Harper Nichols is an autistic mixed media artist from the Atlanta, Georgia area who has worked with brands such as Google, Starbucks, Hallmark, COACH, KIND bar, and her work has been featured in places such as Target, Anthropologie, Kohls, Barnes & Noble, among others. She is the author of books that combine words and vibrant images, including You Are Only Just Beginning, How Far You Have Come, All Along You Were Blooming, and Peace is a Practice. She is also the creator of the Storyteller app, and her podcast, The Morgan Harper Nichols Show. Pico Iyer's latest book, The Half Known Life, looks at the ways in which we seek paradise on earth, sometimes in places that are fraught with risk. In this episode, he and Katherine talk about the similarities in their work, particularly the ways in which they explore secular understandings of big spiritual questions, and they touch on the differences, too. Where Katherine is drawn to the local and the known, Pico quests after the insights that come to travellers and strangers. They are two different ways of looking at the same question: that of how to live a good and peaceful life, via the practice of enchantment.Pico can truly be called a veteran travel writer, having published his first book in 1984, and gone on to publish fourteen more, on subjects ranging from the Dalai Lama to globalism, from the Cuban Revolution to Islamic mysticism. They include such long-running sellers as Video Night in Kathmandu, The Lady and the Monk, The Global Soul, The Open Road and The Art of Stillness. His writing regularly features in Time, The New York Times, The New York Review of Books, and the Financial Times among many others, and his four talks for TED have received more than 10 million views so far.Katherine's new book, Enchantment, is available now: US/CAN and UKLinks from the episode:Pico and Katherine in conversation about The Half Known LifeKatherine and Pico in conversation about EnchantmentPico's book, The Half Known LifePico's websiteJoin Katherine's Substack to receive episodes ad-free and immersive, bonus mini-episdesFind show notes and transcripts for every episode by visiting Katherine's website.Follow Katherine on Instagram Hosted on Acast. Public health agencies have come to understand the immense value of monitoring waste water, as demonstrated by a recent report calling for its expansion. But Withings allows you to measure your own waste products in the home through a new product called U-Scan. At CES 2023, Julius Dewavrin, Product Manager for U-Scan, explained how U-Scan works and the kinds of health benefits it can provide. More than 3000 components are packed into a disk you can hold in your hand. Just install the device inside the toilet bowl and choose the tests you want it to perform. These include logging your menstrual cycle by detecting hormones in urine, determining whether you're burning fat, hydration, and levels of acidity and vitamin C. For many people, there are medical conditions that require constant active monitoring. Others have needs that can progress in unexpected ways, and whose trajectory can be monitored easily. However, the technology to track these conditions has generally been limited to doctors' offices or companies like Lab Corp. However, in the past few years, the ability to monitor and track a person's health has been miniaturized to the point where we can now do it at home. One company that has been at the forefront of this medical democratization has been Withings.Who are Withings?Withings is a company that makes a variety of at-home health and medical tracking devices. The brand has been around for a number of years and produced devices ranging from connected scales to blood pressure monitors. Most of the company's devices are fully connected and sync together into the Withings app on your mobile device. This integration of devices can give you a better overall view of your health, from tracking weight loss progress to steps taken and even a regular log of blood pressure. The system can also be integrated with data from other providers, including Apple and Google. Together you can track your activity, weight, and more.Withings urine analysisThis year at CES 2023, the company showed off an entirely new entry into the product lineup - urine analysis. The new product is called U-Scan and is intended to help you keep track of a variety of important body metrics at home without any need to go to a lab. In fact, the U-Scan is like a urine analysis lab in your bathroom. Now, the initial question might be, "Why do you want urine analysis at home?" That is a perfectly reasonable response, as it is a fairly new idea. The reason is that there are a number of health metrics that can be determined and monitored using this analysis. Using the U-Scan, you can monitor these metrics at home without doing anything special or outside of your existing habits. The U-Scan device makes its presence almost unseen while still providing its value. The device is only about 90mm in diameter and fits into the toilet. So long as it is in the right location, you literally need to change nothing about your bathroom time in order to gain the benefits.Benefits of U-ScanThe device is able to test for and monitor a variety of biomarkers. The cartridges that are inserted into the device contain a dozen different test pods, which is where the tests are carried out. Once the tests are completed, the device syncs the data to your Withings app to be compared against previous results as well as other Withings data.If something is out of sync, the app is able to alert you to changes in your body's state. For example, the U-Scan is capable of tracking nutrition and hydration. If you work out, which can be logged into the app, and then your electrolytes or water level are low, the app is able to let you know that your post-workout behaviors might need a change.SummaryThe Withings U-Scan is in active development and will be made available to the public in the near future. Jay Griffiths' writing has long explored the link between land, culture and our potential for connection, but her father's death during lockdown made this more vital than ever. Denied the comfort or closure of a funeral, Jay had to find other ways to connect, mourn and memorialise, and in this gentle, wide-ranging conversation she and Katherine talk about imaginary journeys, ritual and delving into a sense of place. Behind all of Jay's work is an ecological urgency, and a sense of grief for the life that we seem to be losing. Here, it's expressed through the idea of homelessness, both literal and metaphorical. This week, my guest is renowned horticulturist Andrew Bunting. Andrew is the Vice President of Horticulture at the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, where he leads the utilization of planting and design to promote environmentally sound gardening practices across the organization. Andrew's extensive experience informs the work of PHS' Public Gardens and Landscapes team which maintains a network of public gardens and landscapes across the Pennsylvania region, contributes to creating vital greenspace and encourages all to see the impact of horticulture in their own lives and I must say, it sounds a really wonderful organisation.  Andrew's expertise extends to many subjects but given his experience of gardening large landscapes in an area where deer are prevalent, and given that at this time of the year in the UK, our gardens are becoming tasty prospects when the wider landscape is offering slim pickings, I thought it would be very useful to get Andrew's take on managing deer. What We Talk About The species of deer Andrew deals with in the US Can you exclude deer from a garden? How can you do this? Justin Higgins was able to start working remotely two years ago when he moved to Los Angeles, California, by negotiating with his employer at the time to cover his coworking space fees. He's often running personal growth experiments, and in the past year decided that he wanted to improve his sales and marketing skills and has built 24-Hour Homepage, a website where visitors see one clickable image for the current second of the day. It's like a big, 24-hour GIF or art project that will live online forever that he is selling one second at a time. April and Justin actually met in a Focusmate session as he was preparing for a presentation later in the week, a pitch about his new project; and April was working on her podcast show notes. For those who are unfamiliar, Focusmate is an online accountability tool where two people are semi-randomly assigned for a video chat where they each take a moment to state a goal for their 50-minute session and then discuss whether or not they finished their task at the end of the session. This has been, by far, Justin's favorite productivity tool for the past two years, and using it helped him realize he could get a lot done at home, so he eventually stopped using the coworking space. In the past, Justin studied physics and astrophysics and then helped startups like Beats Music (later Apple), Polaroid, and Hustle strengthen their software engineering services. As such, he has a lot of interest in some of the up-and-coming apps and online tools on the market as well as connections in those spaces; and he shares about several others, in addition to Focusmate, that he's testing out or keeping an eye on. The Power of Intimacy with Christ | “God is Speaking to Us” Can you discern what God is saying to you, to his church and to his world? I share in this episode a prophetic proclamation of God intervening in our norm to get our attention. He is pulling us back into the authentic. The signs of the times are everywhere, and we must respond to God's voice. Have you met the early church yet, the one that God anointed to do his will, to proclaim the authentic Word and will of God or are you only familiar with the packaged church or its entertainment? In this episode, I share the need to go back to the real call of God for his people and to his church. You will take away prophetic word on what we should be doing right now as we listen and heed what God is saying to us, yes, right now in this hour God is present. God is speaking to us and is calling for a response to his voice and to force it he has intervened in our world. He has taken away our toys, our feel-good places and our favorite things to provoke us to hear his voice. Can you discern what God is saying to you, to your church and to his world?

How NOT To Treat Your Clients - RD246

Resourceful Designer

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 1, 2021 17:48

This is a cautionary tale on how not to treat your clients. Several months ago, I quoted on a branding and web design project for a client. This was an existing client who was starting something new and wanted my help. I gave her a price, she agreed. I sent her a contract, which she promptly signed and returned along with her deposit. Because of the nature of the project, which I’m not going to get into, we had to wait a few months before starting. But a couple of months ago, the client contacted me to cancel the project. The nature of her business involves large gatherings of people, and with the pandemic affecting things, she informed me that she was putting the project on indefinite hold. According to my contract, deposits are non-refundable. However, I did tell her that should she revive the project within six months. I would honour the original quote and the deposit she had given me. And that was that. Or so I had thought. Earlier this week, the clients contacted me. As it turns out, the project wasn’t put on indefinite hold. What happened was another designer who happens to specialize in this client’s niche contacted her and offered to do the project for almost half of what I had quoted. I’ve talked about niching before on the podcast. How niching gives you an advantage because you are perceived as an expert in that niche. Which is true. It works. And it worked in this instance. The client couldn’t pass up this opportunity to work with a designer specializing in her industry and at a lower price than I quoted. So she cancelled with me and hired this other person. I don’t blame her. It sounded like a great deal. Now back to the phone call I received this week. The client contacted me and told me why she cancelled our agreement. Then she proceeded to tell me how much of a nightmare this other designer was to work with. The project was completed, but not to her liking, and she wanted to know if I would be willing to take over the project from now on. Here’s what happened. The client told me the designer seemed like a perfect fit for her project. So was impressed when they talked and she liked his price. She paid him half up front, with the second half coming due upon completion of the project. She gave the designer her credit card number, which you should never do, but she did. And the designer started the project. A few weeks later, the client received her credit card statement and noticed that the designer's payment was converted from US funds. Both the client and the designer live in Canada, so naturally, the client thought the quote was in Canadian dollars. Nowhere on the invoice says US funds, and she doesn’t remember the designer ever saying anything about charging in US Dollars. When she questioned the designer, he told her that all web designers charge in US Dollars (which is not true), and that’s just the way it is. She should have done her homework before hiring him. The US/CAN exchange rate means the client pays roughly 30-35% more than she expected for the project. But at this point, the designer had already designed a logo, which the client liked and had started on the website. So taking the loss, things with the project proceeded, and everything continued to go well with the project. It wasn’t until the client started asking for changes that the designer's true demeanour came out. The client asked the designer to move a few things around on the website, but the designer refused to make any of the changes she requested. He told her that she’s not a designer and therefore doesn’t know what she’s talking about. She should leave designing to the expert. When the client expressed a dislike for the colour palette, the designer chose for the website. He told her he wasn't going to change it. He had a vision for the brand, and he was going to stick with it. He told the client the colours would grow on her and not worry about it. They never did. When the client saw a proof of the website, including copy the designer had written himself, she decided to log into WordPress and edit some of the wording. The designer had a fit, accusing the client of trying to sabotage his vision. The designer sent her a message saying, “Will you please stop making changes to the website. If you start messing around, you’re liable to muck things up, which is just more grief for me. You’re not a web designer, so why don’t you stick to things you know and let me handle the website.” He then revoked the client’s access to the site until he was finished with it, saying any changes she wanted had to be done by him. But as stated earlier, the designer refused to make any changes that went against his vision. And to make it worse, when the client complained that he wasn't listening to her, he replied, “I received your input, but I’m the designer. I’ve been doing this for a long time and know a lot more about designing websites than you do. Please keep your opinions to yourself unless I ask for them.” This brings us to now. The client is not happy with the completed website and doesn’t want anything to do with the designer anymore. That’s why she’s reaching out to me, someone she’s worked with before and someone who has always treated her well. The saving grace is the designer didn’t use a contract. So she’s not on the hook to stay with him once she pays her final fee. Things still need to be finalized, but it looks like I’ll be taking over this project very soon. I wanted to share this experience with you to illustrate how not to treat a client. Yes, as designers, we are experts. Especially if you focus on a niche. However, being an expert doesn’t mean you’re better or above your client or that a client’s opinion isn’t valid. A designer/client relationship is a partnership. One where you work together to complete the project. A designer may know more about designing than the client, but they will never know more about the client's business than they do. Abusing this is a great way to lose clients. Maybe this designer doesn’t care. Maybe he’s laughing and thinking how smart he is. He got paid for the project, and now he never has to hear from the client again. But you know what? This client is an influencer in her space. The same space this designer specializes in. What do you think will happen when she starts telling other people in her industry about her experiences? Was it really worth it for that designer to get his way? In the long run, I don’t think so. I wish him luck because if that’s how he treats his clients, he’s going to need it. No matter how good you are, your business will not succeed if you drive your clients away. I've said it before. Clients prefer to work with a good designer they like than an amazing designer they don’t like. That’s how NOT to treat your clients. I know you know better than acting like this. But it’s always good to hear these kinds of stories to make you appreciate the relationships you have with your clients. Treat them well, and they’ll treat you well. What more can you ask for? Resource of the week ScreenFlow This week’s resource is something I've shared before, ScreenFlow screen recording software. It has helped me streamline my graphic design business so much that I have to share it again. Using ScreenFlow has saved me so much time and headaches. Instead of teaching clients how to use their new websites and then helping them again a month or so later when they’ve forgotten, now I just record a short instructions video showing them what to do. If they need a refresher or need to train someone new, they have access to the video and they don’t have to interrupt me for help. For that reason alone I highly recommend ScreenFlow.

Shai Oster, the Asia Bureau Chief from The Information reviews the year of 2019 on how the technology giants in China and SoftBank have fared and offers his annual predictions to what will be happening in 2020. Shai reviewed his 2018 predictions and ranked how each of them have gone for 2019. In addition, he offered his perspectives on how Huawei and ByteDance will face constant challenges in their overseas expansion and whether SoftBank will raise their 2nd fund and the downstream impact from their debacle with Wework trickling down to Oyo, Didi and Grab in 2020. Last but not least, Shai throws forward what he thinks will happen in 2020. Here are the interesting show notes and links to the discussion (with time-stamps included): Shai Oster (@beijingscribe, LinkedIn, TheInformation Profile), Asia Bureau Chief in The Information  So since your last appearance on the show, what have you been up to? 2018 predictions  Didi to IPO in end 2019. ByteDance will continue to grow and fight Facebook in Southeast Asia, but will not IPO.   Ant Financial’s path to IPO is not clear. What will happen to Xiaomi with their overseas expansion? First-quarter of scary growth in China and followed by the wave of government stimulus in China. State of China and SoftBank for 2019 What are the few events which you feel that 2019 has shifted the trajectory for SoftBank and Chinese tech giants? Event 1: The US and China Relationship: There is obviously a lot of tension between the two countries, and a display of that tension can be seen in what has happened to Huawei in the last year. There was the trade ban that is forcing US companies like Google & Qualcomm to stop providing to Huawei & also the FCC ban that stops the use of government fund to purchase equipment from Huawei. It seems like Huawei is always in the news these days, from their product launches, to their lawsuits, and also the recent employee detainment allegations. How has Huawei been doing and coping with all the challenges they’re facing in the U.S.?  Do you think that the Huawei CEO has been responding well to the critics? What is the future of 5G for Huawei across the world?  Event 2: The SoftBank debacle with Wework and Vision Fund 2 We all know that WeWork is not what used to be, so has Vision Fund 1 reached the peak with Wework’s collapse? How has that changed the way how the public markets have perceived the startup unicorns given that Uber have not performed well for their IPO and Wework failed to even go public?  Will Oyo in India be the next on a similar trajectory with Wework?  Will SoftBank be able to raise the 2nd Vision Fund in 2020? Are the other unicorns backed by SoftBank in danger, for example, Bytedance and Grab?  Event 3: The public markets for Chinese Tech Startups Alibaba has just popped in the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, after Xiaomi and Meituan-Dianping, do you think that HKSE will be the Chinese tech startups’ port of call for IPO? With the chaos in Hong Kong and investors moving their assets from Hong Kong to Singapore, do you foresee that the HKSE will lose its pole position as a financial hub and what it means for chinese tech giants planning to go IPO? Other long term implications & effects to businesses & tech companies?  Event 4: Bytedance Will Bytedance end up in the same predicament similar to Huawei? Will Canada be impacted? These are just some of the questions Mica brought forth to Joyce Arthur, who is the executive director of the Abortion Rights Coalition of Canada. Joyce helped shed some light on the legality of abortion rights in the US and Canada, how important it is for pro-choicers to stay vigilant and make visible their politics, and why the language of human rights is such a powerful, dangerous tool within the anti-choice movement.

Over three dozen sexual harassment cases mushroomed in universities, media organizations, NGOs and the private sector in China. Suddenly, this campaign has become a hot topic on Chinese social media. But why now? Why has it started in the academic arena, rather than the entertainment industry, like in the US? Can the campaign last or have a long-term impact? And how should we address the concern expressed by some professors over the#MeToo campaign in China? To answer these questions, we invited our old friend Shi Xiaoqin, a former military officer, a feminist and now a professor in Zhejiang University to share with us her insights and observations.

Get Paid For Your Pad | Airbnb Hosting | Vacation Rentals | Apartment Sharing

Airbnb is often cast as the villain in discussions around affordable housing. Aspiring home owners struggle to afford the 5% down payment required for a conventional mortgage, and as increasing numbers of real estate investors use platforms like Airbnb to accommodate tourists, prices get further out of reach for would-be residents.Yifan Zhang is re-casting Airbnb as a force for good in affordable housing with the launch of her new startup. Yifan is the co-founder and CEO of Loftium, a service that provides prospective home buyers with up to $50K for a down payment with the caveat that they list an extra bedroom on Airbnb for 12-36 months, and share the profits with Loftium for the length of the contract.A 29-year-old Harvard grad with experience in the startup world, Yifan became an Airbnb host when she and her husband bought a townhouse in Seattle. The revenue stream from their spare bedroom covered the couple’s mortgage payments, and Yifan got the idea to help prospective home buyers come up with a down payment based on the potential profit of listing a spare room on Airbnb. Today she discusses rising home prices in the US, the strict mortgage regulations in place, and the media attention Loftium has received since its launch.   Shorai Lithium Batteries Phuc Lam from Shorai Inc, and also an avid motorcyclist, explains lithium batteries in this episode. Since 2010, Shorai has been the maker of lithium iron phosphate batteries. Shorai LFX batteries are up to 80 percent lighter than equal performance lead acid batteries, which can mean saving anywhere from 2 to 20 pounds, depending what kind of bike you ride. They operate at a higher voltage range and maintain a higher voltage level during cranking, which means your motorcycle starts more quickly.  The lithium batteries can be charged using a lead acid charger or by using the charger specifically designed for Shorai’s LFX lithium batteries. And the Shorai lithium batteries are compatible with modern motorcycle charging systems. Easy to install, Shorai batteries come with a three year pro-rated warranty and can be purchased at Shorai dealers or online on their website.  Website: www.shoraipower.com Garmin Zumo 395LM Jim talks with Cesar Palacios, Media Relations Associate from Garmin International Website: http://www.garmin.com/ ** Garmin® Thrills with New zūmo® Motorcycle Navigators ** Source: Garmin Press Release Feb 16, 2016 OLATHE, Kan.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Garmin International Inc., a unit of Garmin Ltd. (NASDAQ: GRMN), today announced the new zūmo 395LM and zūmo 595LM motorcycle navigators. The rugged, weatherproof (*1) models offer Garmin Adventurous Routing™ so riders can select the level of twists and hills on every journey. The zūmo 395/595LM presents innovative features specifically designed for motorcyclists with the introduction of rider alerts, helpful smart features, new streaming music options and much more. “What’s exciting about the new zūmo models is that they are designed to find those adventurous winding roads that riders typically crave,” said Dan Bartel, Garmin vice president of worldwide sales. “The ability to stream Spotify music will also enhance the thrill of every ride.” Garmin Adventurous Routing™ options elevate the ride by finding routes with curves and hills, while limiting major highways that offer unchanging and often wearisome roads. In order to enhance the adventure, both zūmo models allow riders to control music and media from a compatible smartphone or MP3 player. (*2) The 595 model lets riders stream popular music services2 such as Spotify® and Pandora® right into their headset or helmet (sold separately), offering easy control options using the glove-friendly zūmo screen display. Garmin recognizes safety as a top priority for motorcyclists – that’s why both zūmo models include new rider alerts to help increase situational awareness. Riders can be notified of upcoming sharp curves, nearby red light and speed cameras (*3), animal crossings and many other useful alerts. In addition, riders will be prompted with relevant state helmet law notifications (US/CAN) when crossing state borders. The new zūmo devices allow riders to make and receive calls (*4) while their hands remain firmly on the handlebars. Spoken directions can also be heard when paired with a compatible headset or helmet (sold separately) in order to stay conveniently connected during a ride. The zūmo 595LM model can pair seamlessly with the Smartphone link app (*5) from Garmin to give riders access to new exciting features for motorcyclists. The use of the app allows the zūmo 595LM to conveniently display smartphone information alongside the navigation screen. Riders can view texts, app notifications and other helpful data such as live weather radar and traffic (subscription may be required). Additionally, the new LiveTrack feature lets riders share their ride so friends can track their location. The new motorcycle navigators offer a rugged, glove-friendly design that can endure fuel vapors, UV rays and harsh weather.1 The bright sunlight-readable display of the zūmo 395LM has a 4.3-inch touchscreen while the zūmo 595LM boasts a high-resolution 5-inch transflective touchscreen display to further enhance visibility. Both devices include lifetime map (*6) updates for North America along with motorcycle-specific points of interest (POIs) such as repair services, dealers and more. The new devices maintain the legacy zūmo features that riders have come to expect. Some of these features include: Dynamic Fuel Stops, which suggests fuel stops based on the distance the rider’s fuel is expected to last; the Service History Log to help simplify bike maintenance records; Roundtrip Routing allows riders to plan their route based on time, distance or location; preloaded Foursquare® data offers millions of new and popular places; and Garmin Real Directions™ guides riders using recognizable landmarks and traffic lights. The new zūmo series is compatible with Garmin VIRB® action cameras (sold separately) to start and stop recording footage directly from the zūmo display screen. Riders can also monitor motorcycle tire pressure on the zūmo display with the Tire Pressure Monitor Sensor system from Garmin (sold separately). The zūmo 395LM has a suggested retail price of $599.99 and the zūmo 595LM is $899.99. Both devices are expected to be available in April of this year. For more information, visit garmin.com/zumo. Also, Black Ops 3 won't have a campaign on last-gen consoles (Xbox 360/PlayStation 3). Go throw some money at it. [via Kickstarter] Rainbow Six: Siege: The upcoming installment in the Rainbow Six series won't have a single-player campaign because...why would anything have single-player anymore, right? [via Polygon] Then the gang sits down to discuss the death of the JRPG. JRPGs were in their prime in the early 90s throught the middle of the 2000s and then...something just kind of happened and they suddenly became less of the dominating culture force that they were. In the United States, at least. With the rise of first person shooters and the increasing quality of Western RPGs (Skyrim, Dragon Age, Fallout), the JRPG sort of fell of the radar for a lot of gamers. Now there are even Japanese companies, known for their own RPG styles that have started creating Western RPGs (Dragons Dogma, Bloodborne) that have found tremendous success in the US market.
