It was supposed to be party time; 24 hours in a cultural and culinary paradise, taking the edge off an awful season. Instead we're left wondering what happens next... for the team, the players, even the manager.Ange Postecoglu's Spurs are the Europa League champions, they will play Champions League football next season and represent the Premier League in the European Super Cup... Manchester United will have to come to terms with the sporting, commercial, and financial, realities of a 40-game diet of domestic football.Although there is one more game, one we're now dreading against a very good Villa side, the loss in Bilbao feels like a line drawn under a dreadful season. It may yet lead to lines drawn under some tenures at the club. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

This is The Athletic's podcast dedicated to Manchester United, hosted by Ian Irving, with club writers Laurie Whitwell and Andy Mitten.Familiarity was the theme on this miserable Monday morning. Once again, a team wearing Claret and Blue came to Old Trafford, and once again they pulled off a smash-and-grab. This time it was Aston Villa heading back to Brum with three Premier League points. The next visitors will be Villareal, no strangers themselves. They specialise in draws, with five of their six La Liga fixtures (and the European Super Cup) ending all square. A draw is no good for United, though, so they'll have to outdo Chelsea and both Madrid clubs by sinking the Yellow Submarine. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

In the latest of our guest specials, John B is joined by former Dundee, Aberdeen and Dundee United full back, and 40 capped Scotland International, Stewart McKimmie. Nowadays, in conjunction with business partner Andy Trail, Stewart co-runs a Recruitment firm called Traill McKimmie, who specialise in the Oil and Gas industry. We begin by talking about how he got involved with this venture and how successful it has been for him. We then go all the way back to his fondest memories watching football growing up and his admiration for Leeds United, then where it all started for him at Dundee after he mistakenly signed for two Junior teams at the same time! After three years at Dens Park, Stewart was then signed by Aberdeen. In his second game, he picked up a European Super Cup winners medal after victory over Hamburg then he scored the winning goal against Hearts at Tynecastle that clinched the title, with the Scottish Cup completing the double following shortly afterwards. Six more major trophies would follow in a 14 year spell at the Dons, including one as captain in 1995/96, though he also expresses why surviving relegation in 94/95 was just as memorable having endured some unwarranted stick from sections of the home support that season. He wound down his career at Dundee United, something he has regrets over having not played many matches. We also cover Stewart's international career, which began in 1989 against England at Hampden, and ended against the same opposition at Wembley in Euro '96. In his third cap, Stewart scored the winner against defending World Champions Argentina, a game that cemented his place at Italia '90. He has fond memories of his 40 caps that included three international tournaments and being an unlikely number nine at Euro '92. We round off with the usual slowfire questions, including an interesting best XI. Murray Kinsella and Bernard Jackman join Gavan Casey to discuss a Lions tour so disrupted by Covid-19 that it's beginning to give the lads second thoughts as to whether or not the Tests will go ahead and, more pertinently, whether or not they even should. Murray and Bernard also assess Ireland U20s turnaround against Italy, Italian rugby's hopefully brighter future, Andy Farrell's youthful matchday 23 to face the USA, and the European Super Cup for clubs from Tier 2 European nations.
Join the crew as we discuss the creation of the new European Super League. Listen as fans Jason, Jv, and Jose weigh in on this hugely controversial topic! So much to dissect in this information and question packed episode.
Having looked at the Villa players individually, Lee, Gary and Mike return to discuss what they achieved collectively. The hors d’oeuvre is Villa’s first league title in 71 years, achieved after a Homeric tussle through the 1980-81 season with Bobby Robson’s Ipswich and using just 14(!) players.Follow that, as they say, and oh boy, did they. Villa then won the European Cup at the first time of asking in 1981-82, despite Tony Barton taking over from Ron Saunders halfway through the campaign, and then topped it off by beating Barcelona to win a comically violent European Super Cup final. We reflect on the legacy of these achievements and ask why this team seems to be so underappreciated in English football. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Top of the league, European Super Cup champions... but not everything is perfect at Liverpool right now. Kristian Walsh and Josh Williams delve deep into the debate over the Reds' new defensive structure and figure out three things: what is it, why has Jurgen Klopp implemented it, and if this is the right thing to do. The good and not so good of Chelsea and Southampton are touched upon, mainly related to that new-fangled high line, while there is also recognition of Roberto Firmino offering the 'glue' to everything his side does well in attack; Sadio Mane and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are also recipients of high praise. There is also a focus on Arsenal, their new front three and whether imitation will be the sincerest form of flattery - or if it is the set-up which could make Liverpool vulnerable on Saturday. Matt Beadle, Stamford Chidge, Jonathan Kydd and very special guest, Chelsea legend Kerry Dixon! We look back at the European Super Cup final against Liverpool where Chelsea went toe to toe with the European Champions only to lose on penalties. Tammy Abraham wins the equalising penalty but misses the crucial 5th in the shoot out but can he and will he bounce back? While there was no trophy, it was another good performance showing that Chelsea can compete and can only get better under Frank Lampard. Kerry gives us his view.Lampard made the right changes after the defeat to Utd and the players improved with impressive performances from Kepa, Pulasic and Mount but the star of the show was the indomitable N'Golo Kante, but does Kerry think he can strike up an effective partnership with Jorginho and what does he think of the man scapegoated under Sarri? In this weeks 'Legend of the week' sponsored by Classic Football Shirts, we choose Pat Nevin, one of the most skilful and well loved Chelsea players of all time. Who better to talk about 'Wee Pat' than Kerry Dixon, a man who profited massively from Nevin's assists. Kerry also discusses some of his favourite moments from his illustrious career; his best Chelsea players; best Chelsea managers; most difficult opponents and his hopes for Chelsea this season.Support the Chelsea FanCast and become a Patron:Become a Patron!Looking back at last weekend's opening fixture against Man Utd, should Lampard have selected older heads above eager youngsters? Should Chelsea have been more cautious? How do we address the implosions and is a lack of physicality an issue? Are Leicester genuine contenders for a top 6 finish this season under Brendan Rogers? Dion Fanning and Paddy McKenna talked about Jurgen Klopp's incredibly enthusiastic reaction to winning the European Super Cup. Dion wondered if Klopp is a Twitter lurker after he was spotted with the icon on his iPhone over the summer and that he had been keeping tabs there on the chatter around Adrian/Rocky Balboa. They also looked at Joe Cole's dubious theory on the VAR decision for the penalty that wasn't overturned and Graeme Souness's concern for Stephanie Frappart that she might make 'a major mistake' as she became the first woman to take control of a men's final in a major competition.
Dave and Neil look back at the opening day 4-1 victory against Norwich. They also discuss the Goalkeeper situation, the European Super Cup, and heap praise on Divock Origi.
Stamford Chidge is joined by Jonathan Kydd and Tony Glover as the Chelsea FanCast returns to look back at Chelsea's first Premier League match of the season, a 4-0 defeat away to Man Utd.On the show tonight we look at the negatives and the positives from the 4-0 defeat away to Utd and ask were we unlucky or naïve?In part two, we get down to brass tacks and ask was the defeat a timely reminder of where we are this season? How much do we need the likes of Kante, Willian and Rudiger back? Is Chelsea’s proclivity to implode a concern and why we think there is no need to panic. In part three, we look ahead to Wednesday night’s European Super Cup final against Liverpool in Istanbul. We ask How important is the Super Cup? Will Frank take it seriously? Who will he start with? Can we beat Liverpool and how damaging would another heavy defeat be? And is Istanbul a trip too far?In part four we have your emails to read out for the first time this season. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

The latest Blood Red podcast is another belter. Our Liverpool FC correspondent James Pearce sat down with former Reds defender John Arne Riise on Wednesday before the Burnley game.Riise was back in Liverpool to promote his brutally honest new autobiography, Running Man, and as well as talking about the book, he opens up on his seven-year spell at Anfield. But as the must-listen podcast reveals, the buccaneering left-back would never have signed for the Reds had it not been for a mobile phone that should have been on silent.Riise made a flying start to his Liverpool career and he talks his strikes in the European Super Cup and Merseyside derby and, of course, THAT free kick v Manchester United and THAT song.A big part of the podcast is dedicated to the club's incredible 2005 Champions League triumph, including the must-win group game v Olympiakos, the 'unreal' atmosphere at Anfield for the semi-final second leg v Chelsea, and of course the unforgettable final v AC Milan in Istanbul.Riise went on to win the FA Cup the following season in equally dramatic circumstances. It was his second domestic trophy with the club, after winning the League Cup three years earlier, but he explains why the Reds were unable to win the Premier League. But can Jurgen Klopp's current crop do that this season? Riise gives his opinion on that - and on the player who has become his true heir down the Liverpool left flank.Enjoy. For information regarding your data privacy, visit acast.com/privacy
