Today is the milestone 50th episode and we have a guest to match it. Édourard Mendy is a Champions League and AFCON winner. He won FIFA's ‘The Best' and UEFA Goalkeeper of the year award in 2021. He holds the record for the joint most clean sheets in a single Champions League season. He went from nearly giving up the football dream in a French job centre with a baby on the way to winning the CL with Chelsea in 7 years. And now he's playing alongside Mahrez, Firmino and Toney at Al-Ahli. Away from the pitch, he is building a reputation as a passionate investor looking to translate the success he has achieved on the pitch to help founders build great businesses. As Édou states, the move to Saudi has also been about facilitating the work he can do away from the pitch as well as being part of an exciting new football landscape; ‘it's not just about football and not just about money'. This is one of sport's great stories; a meteoric rise to the top that had to endure countless challenges to achieve Édou's reality today. From his early days in France to developing football in West Africa, with a big helping of his time at Chelsea, we get a rare insight into the inner workings of a top tier footballer. On today's show we discuss: Origins of a Champions League Winner: How did Mendy get his break in France? What is it like to work your way from the bottom? What happened when Édou decided to look at a career outside of football because he wasn't making it in football? You have to be careful who you put your trust in; when agents promise opportunities that don't materialise. The role family and humble beginnings have played in keeping him grounded as success has quickly come to him. Signing for Reims and then Rennes which paved the way for his move to Chelsea. The Chelsea Story: From getting a call from goalkeeping coach Christophe Lollichon to eventually signing his contract; the Chelsea transfer story. How long does it take for clubs to agree to a transfer? What did Marina Granovskaia say was unique about his move? What role did Frank Lampard play in helping Édou establish himself as Chelsea's number one keeper? What happens when a manager changes at a club? From Lampard to Tuchel… The inside story of Chelsea's iconic Champions League win in Porto. Why Tuchel wanted to play on Chelsea's underdog status. From Champions of Europe and the World to the fringes of the squad; where did it go wrong? Moving to Saudi Arabia and what comes next: Why this move is not just about football and not just about money; what are the considerations that influence transfers? ‘It is important to feel wanted and I felt that from Al Ahli'. How a conversation with the CEO convinced Édou that this was the club for him. What is most exciting about the emerging league and how is the country preparing for it's World Cup hosting duties? Playing in a dream team with Mahrez, Toney and Firmino and the star power of the Saudi League. When an athlete becomes an investor; how Édou is building a profile for himself as an investor and what is the value of athletes bringing their expertise to emerging companies? How establishing football in West Africa and Senegal in particular is and will always be a key part of his focus. 1: Considering how well we've been performing defensively, it's really frustrating to give up a goal in that manner. The penalty is soft but the opportunity comes from our own error. 2: Both teams created as many opportunities for the other as they did for themselves. NYC got a little fortunate with their goal. We provided everything but the finish for the majority of the match. 3: We were missing GG's frame to help get it on frame. On top of being a great goal scorer, his strength and hold up play has also been key. He's also our best aerial threat we've maybe ever had and we missed that. 4: He's big, he's bald he can f-ing do it all. It's been a little while since we've had Brad be so key both defensively and offensively. He's done all that's been asked of him and then some. 5: Were Rios' and Firmino's legs broken? Didn't agree with Etienne at the 9. He did have his opportunity to win not only the game but possibly more minutes, but for some reason he heads it away from goal instead of directly into net. He continues to be what he's been. Join the Atlanta United Fan TV Discord Join here! Thank you very much to our sponsor Mason Mill Chiropractic Book your appointment on the web at www.masonmillchiro.com or call (404) 321-0082. Head there this Wednesday for the annual Chili Cookoff! 1: We looked really competent in the first 30 minutes. We played with a lot of energy and the composure match. Considering all the absences, our defensive composure was something to be pleased with. Unfortunately it all fell apart after the first goal. 2: Both teams' identities were on full display. We continued to play out the back 100% of the time and Toronto relied on their counter pressure and turning us over, which to be fair we greatly aided them in. They executed their game perfectly and we failed ours miserably. 3: As expected, our attack was lacking. Firmino, the magic man, was the invisible man tonight. Saba was really the only player finding himself in dangerous positions until Rios and Mosquera entered. Would've preferred a triple sub made with Xande. 4: On a couple positive attacking notes, Brooks' service into the box is on another level this year. It was frustrating to see us not utilize the wings more when clearly nothing was happening centrally via combination and link up play. Mosquera still looks dangerous and Rios looked like he will be valuable. 5: It's not going to show on the player ratings because of the two goals conceded but Brad still looks very good. He made some great saves tonight and the loss isn't on him. Join the ATL UTD FANTV Discord https://discord.gg/VyXeRYVy
Kenny Dalglish or Steven Gerrard? Mo Salah or John Barnes? Ian Rush or Bobby Firmino? These are some of the decisions for Liverpool legend Phil Thompson as he chooses his top 5 players in the club's history on the latest Football's Greatest with Jeff Stelling. Who would regularly lose their temper in the dressing room if Liverpool failed to win in the Premier League? Why does Thommo think it's wrong for Liverpool fans to boo Michael Owen? Who was his favourite out of the modern day front trio of Salah, Firmino and Sadio Mane? Thommo faces some tough choices as he picks from a cast that has won league titles and Champions Leagues aplenty, and been part of some the greatest matches in the club's history. Some great players are mentioned, but who makes the final five? Jason Longshore caught up with Nick Firmino after his successful start to the 2024 preseason, scoring in the first match in Birmingham. Check out their entire conversation here at SDH.
1: GG's strength is his strength. His hold up play and ability to just shield defenders off the ball is so key to the player that he is. It's how he scored his goal in this match. He's just such a big strong Greek that there's not many players that can outright win the ball off of him. 2: Firmi-yes!! Of all our “new” signings, that is exciting, Firmino should be right at the top of everyone's list. He was electric for the 2's and had a magical moment for the first team. He's very neat and tidy on the ball and that showed in his goal. 3: Aiden was impressive. Sure not super sharp, but he wasn't lacking in confidence and aggression. Love to see the kids playing some first team minutes and giving it loads. The academy group did really well to hold their own as well. 4: We've got our Irishman back, we've got our ginger back, are we back? It was really nice to see some cohesion and understanding this early on. Having a full and mostly healthy pre season sans visa issues will be a big help. 5: The goal we conceded in the first half was soft & down to communication. There's not much more to say about it this early with such mixed lineups, but we can't let soft goals be the story this season. So let's hope that's emphasized and corrected by the time we go to Ohio.
Former Liverpool and Brazil International star Roberto Firmino looks set to leave the Saudi league this winter transfer window and rumours are circulating of a potential switch to the City Ground with Nottingham Forest. Firmino enjoyed a sucessful spell at Liverpool winning the Premier League and Champions League during his time at the club, but since his switch to the Saudi league Firmino has not settled and is looking for a move back to Europe. There is some competition for the Brazil international with clubs from Turkey also showing some interest, but with extremely high wage demands is this the right type of player for Forest? In others news there is a lot of confusion over Jonjo Shelvey, originally Nottingham Forest said he had left on a season long loan to Turkish side Çaykur Rizespor, but today it turns out that this was not true. In fact Shelvey's contract with Forest had been terminated and he left on a free transfer, but why all the cloak and dagger regarding his contract and did the club straight up lie to the supporters? We also have a update on the FFP situation that has rocked the Forest fans, as well as a round up of all the other latest transfer news regarding Nottingham Forest, let us know what you guys think about all these stories, and don't forget to LIKE and SUBSCRIBE to Forest Fan TV. #nffc #nottinghamforest #premierleague Learn more about your ad choices.
