Pioneering shoegazers, THE VELDT recently released an original Robin Guthrie-produced single called, "The Everlasting Gobstopper." It's the first taste of their 'Illuminated 1989' album, a release of which has been anticipated for decades. Produced by Cocteau Twin's Robin Guthrie in 1989 and more recently remastered by Guthrie, the record was intended to be the band's first album, however their label Capitol Records shelved the recording until now.  The album is set to be released on November 24, 2023 via 5BC Records and Disc Drive. One of the most notable first-wave shoe gaze bands, the Veldt was formed in North Carolina in the 1980s by  identical twins Danny Chavis (Guitarist) and Daniel Chavis (Vocalist, guitarist) .  Their unique sound was influenced by The Cocteau Twins, however the brothers musical roots goes back to the church and southern juke- joints, and listening to music that included gospel, Motown and Pink Floyd. The Veldt formed in the late 80's in Raleigh amongst the legendary North Carolina music scene of the time, initially signing- leading to a chain of major-label relationships that took the group across Europe and the U.S. playing shows with the likes of Throwing Muses, the Pixies, Cocteau Twins and the Jesus & Mary Chain, just to name a few. https://theveldtmusic.bandcamp.comThe Music of the VELDT can be heard also on QUEEN OF WANDS with DJ Nocturna Every Saturday on ModSnap Radio | KMOD: San Antonio2pm (HST), 5pm (PST), 6pm (MST), 7pm (CST), 8pm (EST)Thank you for liking, subscribing and sharing  !  THANK YOU for your continued support !Follow me on my other social media sites :Website: https://djnocturna.comRadio: https://modsnapradio.com

Thunderlove Studio is less a physical place and more a state of mind. What a treat it was to welcome Daniel Chavis, lead singer of The Veldt, into Thunderlove Studio. Anywho, you may or may not have heard of The Veldt. From where I sit, you should have. As Daniel and I chatted, there may have been several reasons they may not have achieved the type of widespread commercial success back in the early to mid-90s - the least of which is their sound. The Veldt - the band name taken from a Ray Bradbury short story - is often categorized as a “shoegaze” band. Pitchfork included their 1994 classic Afrodisiac in their “Top 50 Shoegaze Albums of All Time” list. Over the past month, The Veldt has released a couple of songs bourne from those initial Robin Guthrie sessions - “The Everlasting Gobstopper” and “Aurora Borealis” - on their Bandcamp page. Daniel told me that they're hoping to drop the whole Guthrie-produced set at the end of September. Discovering The Veldt has been a real treat and they're exactly the kind of band that makes this Abandoned Albums journey so much fun. I got to talk with Daniel about the band's origin, being a black rock band, the influence of Afrodisiac, and WTF “White Music For Black People” means. Gummies were eaten. Stories were told. Bonds were made. Everyone has seen Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, right? Well, Slugworth, in case you have the memory of Dori the Fish, is the creepy, long-faced fucker who scares kids straight. Kind of like that sinister, spider-like pervert in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang who smells children better than his own farts, but that's an entirely different personality disorder. These guys are good old-fashioned villains. Stories need them. They play an important role, which is to make you uncomfortable so that when there is a release of tension, your happy ending has the most impact, leaving you with an earned feeling of satisfaction. It's what keeps us buying movie tickets. And winning this small victory has value in society today because badly needed is a reinforced belief in humanity. You see, real life used to mean overcoming pestilence and armed invaders, but now we just live vicariously through a film that does the work for us. Even Wall-E, a picture of how lazy and worthless people have become in the future because of the advancement of technology, has a conflict and resolution with a satisfying finish that leaves us with the positivity of goodwill. This goes to prove that in cinema, even a society with no purpose other than to sit on their ass all day in a spaceship and drink Big Gulps is capable of redeeming value. Anyway, Slugworth was the X-Factor, Wonka's inside double agent, the mole. It was his job to test the moral compass of these neurotic little rascals. So, what we learned from Slugworth, even though he presented a misleading guise himself, is that honesty is the best policy. And if your values outshine your greed, the redemption is as inextinguishable as the Everlasting Gobstopper. And what we learned from Willy Wonka is that with simple imagination, flavored wallpaper, chewing gum meals, and fizzy lifting drinks are conceivable if you just believe in your dreams. And even more wonderful is that they can all be infused.

The Veldt - "The Everlasting Gobstopper," a 2023 single on 5BC Records. Flashback to 1989. North Carolina-based identical twins Daniel and Danny Chavis had formed The Veldt just a few years before, inspired by soul, Sun Ra, and shoegaze. They began recording the LP The Everlasting Gobstopper with Cocteau Twins guitarist Robin Guthrie on production, but despite this dream pairing, their label, Capitol Records, shelved the project.  Jump back to 2023, and the album will finally see the light of day, via The Veldt's own 5BC Records. Guthrie has returned to remaster the LP, and the album features backing vocals from his Cocteau Twins bandmate Liz Fraser. While the full album won't be out until the fall, the group has shared the title track as a teaser.  “As the benchmark of the new sound we had started to develop, The Everlasting Gobstopper was a throwback to our younger days of our family getting together on holidays, when Willy Wonka would be playing, and the certain atmosphere would be filled with a sense of love and security,” Daniel Chavis shared in a press release. “Upon reminiscing about this, my brother Danny came up with a riff and then called it The Everlasting Gobstopper as a lullaby to put his baby daughter to sleep. Thus was born this sound that would develop into what we have right now. This is significant – the birth of the sound that we have come to develop until present, because back then we were quite a different band. Robin pretty much shaved off all the excess and led us toward the sound we have now, so The Everlasting Gobstopper is the cornerstone that Robin helped us to lay for our own unique sound, which we still have to this day.” Read the full story at KEXP.orgSupport the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Pioneering shoegazers The Veldt present 'The Everlasting Gobstopper', the first taste of their 'Illuminated 1989' album, the release of which has been anticipated for decades. Produced by Cocteau Twins' Robin Guthrie in autumn 1989 (and remastered by him in 2023), this record was intended to be the band's first album. However, their label Capital Records shelved the recording (resulting in their debut 'Marigolds' album being produced by Lincoln Fong of Moose). Ahead of the full album (due out in autumn of this year), The Veldt is releasing the single digitally and as a 12” vinyl single via Disc Drive and 5BC Records. The accompanying video was produced by Jammi York and the late Yuko Sueta. The B-side is 'Joshuu Lullaby', a previously unreleased vinyl exclusive, produced by Robin Guthrie in 2023. One of the most notable first-wave shoegaze bands, formed in North Carolina in the 1980s, The Veldt surrounds identical twins Daniel Chavis (vocals, guitar) and Danny Chavis (guitar). Their unique sound was influenced by Cocteau Twins as readily as Marvin Gaye and free-jazz warriors Sun Ra and Pharaoh Sanders. Referencing European postpunk while embracing modern hip-hop, these trailblazers work with transient dreamscapes as fluidly as solid song structures. #ShoeGaze #Music #Interview

It's Popzara's Movie Time! Podcast!, where our own movie nerds Ethan Brehm and Nate Evans take you on an unscripted journey yakking and chatting about some of their favorite movie moments and cinematic scenes, from past and present, presented without snark and snobbery for your listening pleasure. On this scrumdiddlyumptious episode our hosts unwrap 1971's Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, the flavory-savory cinematic adaptation of Roald Dahl's 1964 novel. Directed by Mel Stuart and starring Gene Wilder in perhaps his most iconic (and deranged) role, it's since become one of the most beloved films of all-time. Our hosts discuss how the right combination of director, star, music, and pathos helped create a timeless classic that's endured for generations. Also on the lickswishy menu are comparisons to Tim Burton's inferior 2005 Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the recent "revision controversy" of Dahl's literary work, the film's surprising number of Nazi allusions, and so much more. It's one Everlasting Gobstopper that never stops giving its sugary goodness, your golden ticket to pure imagination you don't want to miss!

The term ‘gobstopper' derives from ‘gob,' which is slang in the United Kingdom and Ireland for the mouth.  The origins of the gobstopper can be traced back to ancient Egypt, where sweets were created using natural ingredients such as the likes of fruits, nuts, and seasonings. By the 1500s, the manufacturing of sweets had begun on a small scale with all products created by hand then by 1700's machinery was introduced that made the process much faster. Roald Dahl used the name in his 1964 book “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” when he created the Everlasting Gobstopper, which was first manufactured by Breaker Confections, before being purchased by Nestlé.  The world's largest jawbreaker weighs 27.8 pounds and has a circumference of 37 inches, which is bigger than a basketball.

"Who is the current owner of the Everlasting Gobstopper?" and of course "What is the one movie credit that both George H.W. Bush and Slimer from Ghostbusters share?"All that and more! In the 1971 film Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, impoverished Charlie wins a tour of the strange and wondrous chocolate factory of Willy Wonka, contending for the top prize. A shady man named Slugworth approaches and offers a hefty payment in exchange for an Everlasting Gobstopper. After disqualifying from the top prize, Charlie proves his worthiness by returning the Gobstopper, showing he would rather walk away with nothing than betray Wonka. Each of us face temptation, but we must be able to resist it, as Jesus did after the 40 days of fasting following His baptism. It is the Spirit can give us the power to resist.

#56 - What We Learned From Slugworth

Everyone has seen Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, right? Well Slugworth, in case you have the memory of Dori the Fish, is the creepy, long-faced fucker who scares kids straight. Kind of like that sinister, spider-like pervert in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang who smells children better than his own farts, but that's an entirely different thesis. These guys are good old-fashioned villains. Stories need them. They play a vital role, which is to initially make you feel uncomfortable so that when there is a release of tension, your happy ending is a reward, leaving you with an accomplished feeling of satisfaction. It's what keeps us buying movie tickets. And this earned sense of relief is imperative in society today, because badly needed is a reinforced belief in the determination of humans. You see, real life used to mean having to overcome pestilence and armed invaders, but now we just live vicariously through film that does the work for us. Even Wall-e, a picture about how lazy and worthless people have become in the future because of the advancement of technology has a conflict and resolution with a happy ending that leaves us with the positive feeling of goodwill. Which goes to prove that in cinema, even a society with no purpose other than to sit on their ass all day in a spaceship and drink Big Gulps is capable of having some redeeming value. Anyway, Slugworth was the X-Factor, Wonka's inside double agent, the mole. It was his job to test the moral compass of these neurotic little rascals. So, what we learned from Slugworth, even though he was a misleading liar himself, is that honesty is the best policy. And if your values outshine your greed, the redemption is as inextinguishable as the Everlasting Gobstopper. And what we learned from Willy Wonka is that with simple imagination, flavored wallpaper, chewing gum meals, and fizzy lifting drinks are achievable if you just believe in your dreams. And even more wonderful is that they can all be infused.

SUMMARYMore and more college students are getting pregnant--with burrito babies. Grant talks about new terms for "a full stomach" and other examples of campus slang. Also, is it safe to play on the macadam? Also, overegging the pudding, what it means to be gobsmacked, the difference between who and whom, apostrophe placement, how to pronounce coup de grace, and the embarrassing results when a smartphone mistakenly autocorrects text messages.FULL DETAILSRemember the classic children's story "Where the Wild Thongs Are"? (We didn't think so.) That's just one of the autocorrect horror stories that can happen when smartphones mistakenly correct a text message. Martha and Grant discuss several more.http://damnyouautocorrect.com/If someone is gobsmacked, they're totally surprised. The term may come from the same Gaelic root that gave us the Everlasting Gobstopper.http://taoism.about.com/b/2008/12/29/everlasting-gobstopper.htmShould the sign on the boys' bathroom at a school read Boy's Room or Boys' Room? The hosts clarify where to put the apostrophe."A fifth-year senior"? That term is so 2007. These days, college students just refer to that extra year of school as taking a victory lap. Grant shares this and other examples of campus slang collected by University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill professor Connie Eble. Our Quiz Guy John Chaneski has a game of demonyms. What do you call someone from a certain place? If you're from Cambridge, for example, you're a Cantabrigian. If someone has overegged the pudding, they've overstated the case. This may explain why a lawyer from Lawrence, Kansas, found the phrase in a judicial opinion.A motivational Chinese idiom translates as "ride the cow, look for the horse."Are the names Aaron and Erin pronounced the same? A bicoastal listener insists they should sound different. A longer discussion about Erin vs. Aaron is on the Straight Dope message board.http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/archive/index.php/t-133780.htmlThe word sic, meaning "thus" in Latin, is placed in the text when an author knowingly quotes a misspelled word or otherwise incorrect statement.A native of Southern Pennsylvania has always used the term macadam in place of asphalt. Martha traces the word from an old gravel road to the modern day tarmac.A Japanese idiom, referring to someone who takes credit for another's work, translates as "doing sumo in someone else's underwear."If you say, "The worm has turned," it means you've lost patience. Grant and Martha explain that this expression goes back to the old proverb "Tread on a worm and it will turn."More and more college students are getting pregnant with burrito babies. Grant explains that that this slang term simply means that someone's stomach is full from a hefty meal. What is the proper use of the French term coup de grace? Grant and Martha explain how the term has been twisted, both in pronunciation and meaning. How can you tell the difference between who and whom? A listener shares a chant learned in grade school to remember the proper usage.Grant shares a bit of military humor related to cumshaw, the art of procuring what you need in ingenious ways: "There is only one thief in the army. Everyone else is just trying to get their stuff back."You know the feeling when something hurts so good? A massage therapist looks for a term that describes this mix of pleasure and anguish. Sensanguish? Hedonalgia, maybe?Grant shares Tom Swifties sent in by listeners: "Aw, shucks, I dropped the toothpaste," Tom said crestfallenly, and "I've located the experts," Tom said profoundly.--A Way with Words is funded by its listeners: http://waywordradio.org/donateGet your language question answered on the air!
