Is FHE still a thing? Years ago, Monday nights were set apart as a sacred or special night to spend in families, learning and spending quality time together. Is this still happening? Mark and Janie discuss the importance of taking that time to be together and to teach our children, making Home Evening a part of our family cultures.

This conversation is based in part on the book Understanding Your Mormon Neighbor, by Ross Anderson. Mormonism makes a big deal about families. You can't understand life as a member of the LDS Church without factoring in the strong emphasis on family. This family focus is laudable. It's a great way to establish common ground with your LDS neighbors. But how Mormons approach family starts with a big difference from traditional Christians…The Family Is the Way to Salvation Many LDS values re: family are similar to traditional Xian valuesBut at heart of LDS view of families is a different world viewFamilies are the center of their Plan of SalvationUniverse is organized along family linesHeaven an extension of home life on this earthThus “Families are Forever”Family is the basic unit of exaltationEssence of exaltation = reproduce family life eternallyThis explains the emphasis on genealogyConnect families backward / forward in timeFamily StructureFather is the leader of home → as the one holding the authorized priesthoodBaptize children / ordain sons to priesthood officesGive a blessing when sick or at crossroads of lifeOne structured activity = Family Home Evening: weekly family timeReligious lessons / fun activitiesMany LDS families also have a weekly “business meeting” - prayer & planningIf you live in Utah → explains why historically sports teams don't practice on Monday pm, etc.Other common practices reflecting value of family…Reunions are bigEmphasis on family history: records / journalsFamilies do genealogy together / share resultsLDS Families Are BusyServiceWorthy members give huge amt of time & energy in serviceEach involved in a calling in the local wardRegional church service projects → like welfare farmDoing genealogyTemple work for ancestorsBaking casseroles for neighborsHelping needy in their community, and moreChildren are involved wherever possibleHowever, Mormon parents are kept so busy with service callings / meetingsOften LDS feel like emphasis on family is contradicted by lack of time to spend with familySabbath keepingActive LDS honor Sabbath by not working unless necessarySundays reserved for church attendance & family timeEating out, shopping, movies, similar → discouragedBc they require others to work on SundayStandards are loosening in younger generationsStill → in Utah, when 4th of July falls on a SundayMany towns reschedule patriotic celebs for Sat pmExplains why your LDS neighbors might not accept an invitation to dinner on Sunday, etc.Don't mow your lawn on SundayValues = Mormon worldview defined by principle of progression toward exaltationProduces a drive for achievement & advancementCoupled with “can-do” attitude and strong work ethicAgain, the family is the key environment for cultivating these personal valuesPersonal righteousnessMormons speak of this as “worthiness”The most compelling motive driving daily life in cultureWorthiness is generated by obedienceChildren are to obey parentsAt baptism, new members make covenants to obey God's commandmentsWard members expected to obey leaders → “magnify their callings”All of this is modeled in...

Go Ye Forth - Sharing Latter-day Saint Mission Experiences from Around the Globe
Follow our Facebook page: www.facebook.com/groups/goyeforthpodcast/ Hello everyone! On today's show, I speak with Paul Larsen who served in The Texas, Houston East mission (T.H.E. Mission) from 2003 to 2005 and I think that you'll love hearing about his experiences. And in my missionary minute, I talk about taking opportunities to teach. So let's get to it! ... A big thanks to my good friend Paul Larsen. Paul is such an amazing guy and if you are wondering if he is related to Chelsea Larsen from Episode 6, well, yes, he is her husband. As I mentioned in her episode, they are just a fantastic family and we are sad to see them move out of the ward, and as I said we know they have big things ahead of them in Idaho Falls. In today's missionary minute, I really liked what Paul's mission president said about taking the opportunity to teach wherever they were, even at doorsteps. I am an odd guy about some things and I kind of think that in my head things need to be done in order and by the book. So as my kids were growing up I would have ideas of things I wanted to discuss with them and think, “Well, I've got to talk to them about this in the next Family Home Evening.” And then someone taught me this principle about teaching wherever you are and that might not line up ideally with your FHE lesson. So maybe teach your kids while you're doing work in the yard, or teach them as you're driving them to school, etc. This changed how I viewed teaching moments and taught me that just like a missionary who is called to preach the gospel 24/7, as a parent, I am called to teach my kids 24/7, not just during preach my gospel or family home evening. Well, that's about it for today's show. If you or someone you know has served a mission and you think that they would be a fun guest for the show, please contact me @ goyeforthpodcast@gmail.com If you liked the show, please subscribe so that you are notified when new episodes come out. We would also appreciate it if you could rate and review the podcast in Apple podcasts, or share it with a friend. Until next time, wax strong in the gospel my friends! This is not an official production of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The opinions expressed are by the host and guest.
This week we talk about The Fall, Cain and Able, and how it all ties into obedience. It's a great reminder for us to be grateful, make good choices, and be obedient.
Chandler Roberson was raised as a devout Mormon, and always wanted to be the best Mormon she could be. In her teenage years Chandler had a few abusive relationships with Mormon boys, where she felt forced to “repent” for “sins” she never committed. Her senior year Chandler felt pressured to break up with a non-LDS boy whom she genuinely loved, and to attend BYU-Idaho to follow the ideal Mormon path. While at BYU-Idaho Chandler was sexually assaulted by her Family Home Evening “brother,” which led to her leaving BYU-Idaho early, ultimately attempting to serve an LDS mission with untreated PTSD (returning home early). Chandler eventually became a nationally-known fashion blogger at “Days of Chandler.” Later, Chandler attempted two young LDS temple marriages, both of which ended in divorce. In her view, she was too young to attempt marriage, but felt intense pressure from LDS Church members to marry young. This is Chandler's story. Major themes include: - Pressure to be a “good Mormon girl” (all on women's shoulders) - BYU-Idaho (dating/sexism, sexual assault problem at BYU schools) - Fashion Blogging (similar pressure to be a certain way – inauthentic/beautiful) - Personal impacts of being raised in the church ( codependency, sexual shame, etc) - Pressure to get married (twice). We are super grateful to have Samantha Shelley (Zelph on the Shelf) as co-host for this interview. ————— We are 100% donor funded! Please click HERE to donate and keep this content coming! It's not enough just to teach our children the gospel, we also need to teach them how to teach others the gospel. As a novice mother I made the mistake of thinking that just because my children had grown up going to church every week, having family scripture study every day and Family Home Evening every week, they would automatically know how to give a coherent ,well thought out lesson. Oh how wrong I was. Knowing how to be an effective teacher takes practice. Allowing our kids to practice at home where the stakes are low is so important for preparing them to teach outside of the home. Whether its a talk in sacrament meeting or a young men's/young women's lesson, you can help your youth give the perfect lesson by teaching them to follow these four simple steps when preparing their lesson. This conversation looks at both Theresa's experience in ready-made queer spaces in Atlanta in the late 80s and early 90s and Jaime's experience in the early 90s with queer world-building in the suburban town of Provo, Utah, while attending graduate school at Bringham Young University.Find out about the DIY ethos that Theresa found alluring in those spaces and how those punk and queer and alternative ideas impacted the programming, like Sarahfest, that the Isom Center offers. And learn how Jaime and fellow graduate students created their own queer world-building with an event called Feminist Home Evening, a play on the Mormon tradition of Family Home Evening, where Mormon families, led by the father, gather every Monday evening to learn more about the Mormon faith in a Sunday-school style gathering, as a response to BYU's refusal to allow the English department to offer a feminist theory course.

Heidi Simpson readily admits that she did not grow up dreaming of being a mother. She didn't dream of days when she would have a house full of rambunctious children running around creating a bunch of "happy" chaos. However, that's exactly what she got. The Lord had different plans for her. As most mothers do, she has sacrificed some temporal pursuits of her own to be the rock of her family. A rock that is needed when raising 4 children, 2 of which are on the autism spectrum. With her hard working husband, Thomas, gone much of the time during the day providing for the family, she provides the direction and care at home their children need. Heidi shares some experiences of discovering and raising autistic children, She shares an experience of when the spirit really shook her to help her know that their second child was being sent to them at time when they needed her.Heidi also talks about her evolution of fitness and what she has been able to allow herself to become rather than following the pressures of the world. Heidi's family has lived in several areas of the country experiencing gospel living in many places. She had a strong family foundation that raised her strong in the church but also admits that she is a little jealous of her husband who was not raised in the church. She does not mean that in a negative way, but in a personal growth way. Heidi speaks to how she and Thomas have been able to travel this road together while figuring things out along the way, especially when it came to raising their family with all of the dynamics involved. She offers some tips on what not say and how not to interact with a family that has autistic children. Finally, she talks about how they find joy in living the gospel of Jesus Christ. One's thing is for sure, Heidi is proud of her family and the legacy they are leaving as they blaze their trail in this world!!

In this episode, Ken Craig and Shawn Rapier tackle everyone's Monday night favorite. Yep, it's Family Home Evening. We talk about FHE etiquette (Can you call people Monday nights??), activities, treats, and what counts as FHE. We revisit past Family Home Evenings we have enjoyed and hear from our live audience.
What does Gospel Teaching look like in your home? How do you do scripture study with littles, what about with teens? Do you do Family Home Evening or Come Follow Me lessons? How long does your teaching last? There are as many different answers to these questions as there are people. So while each family is different, it can still be helpful to see how other people are making it work in their homes. In this episode, we take you behind the scenes to look at what gospel teaching looks like in our homes. Linsey shares how she does family scripture study around the breakfast table. Her young kids seem to be more attentive while they keep their mouths full of Cheerios. Linsey spends most of her time teaching scripture stories and gospel principles found in the Book of Mormon Reader. I (Leslie) share how my teens wake up before school and breakfast to get a few minutes of Come Follow Me scripture study in. While they may look like they are catching the last few minutes of sleep snuggled up in their blanket on the coach, they know they have to be awake enough to share at least one meaningful thing they learned during scripture study with the rest of the family.. Both Linsey and I use Sunday Come Follow Me lessons or Family Home Evening lessons to do a bit longer gospel lesson during the week. We also both use a monthly theme to make spontaneous gospel teaching easier and to give focus to our learning. By sharing what works for us, we hope to inspire you to figure out what works best for you. What works for you might be totally different than what you see here, and that's ok. It should be different. The key in whatever you do and however you do it is to be consistent. If you are consistent, the results will come! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/myteachingmatters/message

The Mormon tradition of Family Home Evening, how that tradition changed my life, how COVID took it away from me, and my feelings as it starts to come back into my life, how the pandemic appears to be affecting people's efforts to achieve notoriety or to maintain attention that they've already gained, the genius that is the 90's rock band The Presidents of the Unites States of America, a much-too-short list of some great drummers in alternative rock music, the story of how I met and became friend's with Arizona ska/punk drummer legend Johnny Lincoln (and how we might get to work together again on a project very soon), how social media may have landed me as a soon-to-be guest on another prominent Arizona podcast, the fun that I have geeking out on the experience that the research team of another show will have in doing a deep-dive into my work. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Sam and Dan are joined by their sister, Leslie. She shares memories and Sam spontaneously tells a "Family Home Evening" story. This episode was recorded on July 1, 2019.
How do you keep the Sabbath day holy? Saints Unscripted discuss their views on Sabbath day observance and what we should do to keep the Sabbath day holy. Shelley believes that Sunday is God’s day. All of the things that we do on the Sabbath day should relate back to God and be the kinds of things that God would want us to do on the Sabbath. She believes that going out to eat and watching sports on Sundays is wrong. Because there is a time set aside on Monday nights for Family Home Evening, we can eat out and watch sports during those times, instead of on Sundays. Kwaku thinks that on Sunday you should be reading your scriptures, dedicating time to the Lord, and providing service to others. That service can come from many different opportunities like cleaning, home and visiting teaching, or serving the homeless. He believes those are things that anyone can do while keeping the Sabbath day holy. Ian believes that you need to try your hardest to work 5 or 6 days of the week, and not be working on the Sabbath day to dedicate that time to the Lord. There are times that you may need to work on Sundays to provide for your family or for other reasons, but do everything you can to keep Sundays separate from the week as a sacred day for you. All 3 agree that whether you have a Priesthood duty, Relief Society opportunity, or church calling to serve others, you absolutely do it, especially on Sundays! Saints unscripted recognize that they, like many people, struggle at times to keep the Sabbath day holy but that it’s still important to follow this important commandment. The importance of the Sabbath day is something we all need to recognize and do our best to improve our Sabbath day worship.
We like to do shows, it’s a fun thing. We write things then we say them and we record it so you can hear it later and it’s lots of fun… ANY hooters, you’re here, so, you probably know that, so why not listen then? In this episode of STAB! the wholly lifelike John Ross … Continue reading »

We review Get out, Jordan Peele's break out satirical horror featuring British actor Daniel Kaluuya, and US actress Alison Williams. While we wouldn't recommend seeing Get Out as a church or a Family Home Evening activity, we feel like it needs to be seen by everyone because of its biting treatment of the dangers of White American middle-class liberalism.

Full disclosure: I like Martin Luther King. This shouldn’t surprise most of us. Most of us in 2017 do. He had a vision for human rights that have since transcended the times, and I celebrate it. Dr. King worked to dismantle white power structures that defined (and, to a large extent, still do define) American […] The post A Family Home Evening Lesson on Martin Luther King Day appeared first on Mormon History Guy.

So, the kids screwed up yesterday. They went to go see a movie that Mrs. Frieda specifically forbid and were spotted by. . . someone. When they had to hoof it, though, George decided the best way to escape was to call his giant firebird and fly back to the house. In any case, Frieda knew that they went to that movie, and found a suitable punishment: Helping out at the local LDS Church. During the previous night, the kids were serenaded by their local pastor and missionary Elder Dane. The kids see the opportunity to go clean the church as a way to find out more about this very strange man. Meanwhile, everyone else proceeds to clean or set up the church in their own ways (sometimes ways that they’ve invented).
