As we wrap up 2023 I wanted to revisit a few conversations over the next two weeks that impacted me most this past year. This week I'm delighted to revisit a really powerful talk with author and podcaster Gretchen Rubin. The Holiday and New Years season can bring with it a good deal of stress and anxiety and this conversation reminds us of the importance of stepping outside our everyday anxieties by truly connecting with nature, our bodies, and the world around us. In this chat we unpack many of the principles contained within her book, Life in Five Senses: How Exploring the Senses Got Me Out of My Head and Into the World.  In LIFE IN FIVE SENSES Gretchen's revelatory journey of self-experimentation, she explores the mysteries and joys of the five senses as a path to a happier, more mindful life. Drawing on cutting-edge science, philosophy, literature, and her own efforts to practice what she learns, she investigates the profound power of tuning into the physical world. From the simple pleasures of appreciating the magic of ketchup and adding favorite songs to a playlist, to more adventurous efforts like creating a daily ritual of visiting the Met and trying ayahuasca, Rubin shows us how to experience each day with depth, delight, and connection. In the rush of daily life, she finds, our five senses offer us an immediate, sustainable way to cheer up, calm down, and engage the world around us—as well as a way to glimpse the soul and touch the transcendent.  Gretchen Rubin is one of today's most influential observers of happiness and human nature. The Book Leads - Episode 73: Kimberlee Pita & Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear by Elizabeth Gilbert The magic of who we are. That's what this book and conversation cover. In Episode 73, Kim, a Mental Wellness Coach and Founder of the Love Your Mental Health LLC, reflects on both her career and mental health journeys. A tool pivotal in Kim's wellness work is mindfulness -- taking stock of both what's around us and within us. She found Big Magic by chance, but it made -- and left -- a deep impression on her. For her, the book put to words how different we all are, how different our circumstances are, and how much we tend to not realize what we're capable of in our lives. There is so much we can unlock from deep within ourselves. We spend most of our lives and career looking for it (the "magic") on the outside and in our environments. Those experiences help, yes. But they merely unlock what's always been there. There really is magic inside all of us. It's that uniqueness we can bring to the world, something that is only ours, a culmination and result of ALL the experiences we've collected along our journey. If you don't want to call it magic because it sounds hokey, call it whatever you want. A gift, that something special, your driver, your passion, your reason for being -- whatever resonates for you. But society stops us from letting it (whatever you decided to call it just now) get through. We conform to the script of life, mute ourselves because of the attitude of others, fear that paralyzes us, and hold back on and give up on ourselves. We're through before we even get started. Check out this book even if you're not a traditional creative -- the singer, the musician, the painter, the sculptor, the photographer, the writer. Everyone is capable of creating in one form or another. Find what's yours. CONVERSATION HIGHLIGHTS We were all given something. We all have a beautiful gift inside of us. Once we can find our authentic, true self, then we can truly deliver our magic. You honor yourself through self-care. Life in Five Senses: How Exploring the Senses Got Me Out of My Head and Into the World by Gretchen Rubin https://amzn.to/434nbNE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Happiness Project discovers a surprising path to a life of more energy, creativity, luck, and love: by tuning in to the five senses. “Life in Five Senses invites us into the seismic shift toward a life grounded in sensation, vitality, and innate intelligence.”—GLENNON DOYLE, author of Untamed “An inspiring and practical guide to living in the moment.”—SUSAN CAIN, author of Bittersweet and Quiet For more than a decade, Gretchen Rubin had been studying happiness and human nature. Then, one day, a visit to her eye doctor made her realize that she'd been overlooking a key element of happiness: her five senses. She'd spent so much time stuck in her head that she'd allowed the vital sensations of life to slip away, unnoticed. This epiphany lifted her from a state of foggy preoccupation into a world rediscovered by seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, and touching. In this journey of self-experimentation, Rubin explores the mysteries and joys of the five senses as a path to a happier, more mindful life. Drawing on cutting-edge science, philosophy, literature, and her own efforts to practice what she learns, she investigates the profound power of tuning in to the physical world. From the simple pleasures of appreciating the magic of ketchup and adding favorite songs to a playlist, to more adventurous efforts like creating a daily ritual of visiting the Metropolitan Museum of Art and attending Flavor University, Rubin show us how to experience each day with depth, delight, and connection. In the rush of daily life, she finds, our five senses offer us an immediate, sustainable way to cheer up, calm down, and engage the world around us—as well as a way to glimpse the soul and touch the transcendent. Life in Five Senses is an absorbing, layered story of discovery filled with profound insights and practical suggestions about how to heighten our senses and use our powers of perception to live fuller, richer lives—and, ultimately, how to move through the world with more vitality and love.

What do your five senses — sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch — have to do with happiness? According to Gretchen Rubin, a great deal. The world around us, she says, has the potential to dazzle, to entertain, to trigger a state of rapture. If only we pay attention. Today on the show, she shares with Rufus the tools she's developed to delight in the physical world. “So one of the things I explored in life in Life in Five Senses was the value of boredom. Because when you're bored and when your mind is just kind of running free and trying to amuse itself, you'll often have insight. And that's why people have ideas in the shower, when they're walking the dog or something. When there's nothing occupying them, that's when our brain can come up with these new insights. So I was walking through the Met, I was in a very familiar place, so I was a little bored. And that's when I realized, the way I thought of it was that the beautiful often requires a little bit of ugly. And being systematic, I'm like, you say that, but how do you back that up? And I could think of one for each sense because it does turn out that often the beautiful does require a little bit of what might be considered ugly. And that is part of, as you say, the complete picture. When I took a perfume class as part of my sense of smell study, our professor had said that often a beautiful perfume will have some bad, you'll smell it and you would be like, Ooh, that smells bad. And yet it makes the perfume more beautiful.” Gretchen Rubin is an author, podcast host, and self-improvement expert, who has written many New York Times bestellers, including one that hit #1: The Happiness Project, where Gretchen performed what she has now perfected—using herself as a lab through which to study how principles from throughout time act on us, and inform our understanding of the world. She extends this point-of-view into her podcast, The Happiness Project with Gretchen Rubin, where she offers actionable daily strategies for cultivating joy and well-being, along with her sister. Today, we discuss her newest book, Life in Five Senses, which explores the powerful impact of embracing the world through sensing the world, rather than thinking about the world. It's a book about experiencing: seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, and touching. Through her extensive research and personal insights, Gretchen found that tuning into these senses provides relief from internal chaos while fostering our connection with the external world. This week I was delighted to welcome Gretchen Rubin back to the show for a great conversation about her new book, Life in Five Senses: How Exploring the Senses Got Me Out of My Head and Into the World. Gretchen has been on the show in the past and it's always great to catch up with her and see what she has been researching or pondering, and this new book is no exception. She's the author of many books, including the blockbuster New York Times bestsellers Outer Order, Inner Calm; The Four Tendencies; Better Than Before; and The Happiness Project. Her books have sold more than 3.5 million copies worldwide, in more than thirty languages. She hosts the top-ranking, award-winning podcast “Happier with Gretchen Rubin,” where she explores practical solutions for living a happier life. If you're like most people, you could benefit from cultivating a stronger connection with your five senses. Sight, sound, touch, smell, and taste are not only sources of information and pleasure, they are also your lifelines to the present moment. Learning how to grasp these lifelines with intention is a valuable skill that can help you feel happier, more at ease, and more connected to the world around you.    Your senses can be especially important if you struggle with anxiety. One of the worst parts of anxiety is how it steals your ability to fully inhabit your life. When you're busy worrying about things that haven't happened and may never happen, it's impossible to appreciate the tiny moments of beauty unfolding around you every day. But your senses are powerful tools for returning to the present moment and appreciating it fully, and this episode is all about how to use them.   My guest is Gretchen Rubin, the author of several New York Times bestselling books on happiness and human nature and host of the “Happier with Gretchen Rubin” podcast. We're discussing her latest book, “Life in Five Senses: How Exploring the Senses Got Me Out of My Head and Into the World.” I hope you'll join us!   xoxo, Dr. Lisa Marie Bobby growingself.com
