Welcome to the first episode of our new series “I'm the problem, it's me,” where I deep dive on the struggles and fuck-ups I've been facing lately, because let's be honest, sometimes we're the problem. And those experiences are usually our greatest teachers. Think of this as adulting confessions. And today, I'm calling bullshit on all of the complaining I do about how impossible it is to meet people, and how lonely I feel. Because the reality is, I've been optimizing myself out of human connection and removing all my chances for meeting new people in the name of efficiency. Social connection should never be a “reward” we have to earn by being productive and efficient, so I'm on a mission to rewrite how I meet new people and interact with my current network.Tune in as I unpack my problems, and the solutions I'm trying:How apps and automated deliveries have replaced human interaction The link between our social lives and healthspan What we can learn from the blue zones The plan to meet more like-minded friendsThe concept of the “premium effect” in datingBeing strategic about where and how I meet peopleHabit stacking tasks and creating community Our show is produced by:Gillian Berner, Host, Producer & EditorOlivia Nashmi, Audio EngineerKyla Killackey, Digital EditorCarolyn Schissler, Designer & Web ProducerFor advertising and sponsorship inquiries, please contact Frequency Podcast Network. Community Function Session, Mystical Community Living Retreat with Jiska and FriendsThe session discusses the importance of function in community living and its role in bringing people together, undoing the ego, and finding connection. Many people are surprised to learn that a monastery is not a place for prayer, meditation, or contemplation but rather for letting go of personal responsibility, focusing on prayer, listening to guidance, and communication. The community is highly guided, and everyone desires to be truly helpful. The community is highly individualized, so it requires trust and understanding. Community members share their experiences of coming to the monastery and the urge to be undone. They share their own experience of being given a function, which can lead to pride and ego issues, and an appreciation is expressed of how Spirit can use a move from the comfort of a leadership position to a follower position to undo pride and ego.The Living Miracles community practices the teachings of A Course in Miracles daily in very practical ways. Episode 58: The value of poker, mahjong, and other games for making friends and getting closer with the friends you already have.I'm a longtime fan today's guest, author and podcaster, Mark Oppenheimer, who spoke with me about the value of participating in a regular game with friends. In Mark's case, he has a longstanding poker game. I talked about mahjong. Bridge was a big part of my parents' social lives. There is something about a game with a regular group of players that is different from other ways we get together with friends. I'm excited that Mark, who recently wrote about his poker group, is here to talk about this topic with me. And Mark's next major book project is one I cannot wait to read. Judy Blume chose him to write her official biography. The story of how that came to be is in our episode. It's a sweet friendship story—don't miss it!Show notes are HERE.Meet Mark OppenheimerMark Oppenheimer is head of open learning at American Jewish University. He received his Ph.D. in religious studies from Yale, covered religion for The New York Times for six years, has taught at Yale, NYU, Wellesley, and Stanford, and is the author of five books, most recently Squirrel Hill: The Tree of Life Synagogue Shooting and the Soul of a Neighborhood. He created the most downloaded American Jewish podcast ever, Unorthodox, with 7 million listens from 2015-2023, and also wrote and hosted Gatecrashers, a podcast about the history of Jews in the Ivy League. Did you know that having friends can make you less depressed? One survey found that the average American had not made a new friend in the last five years but 45% of people said they would go out of their way to make a new friend if they only knew how. Our guest today, Dr. Marisa G. Franco, has written a bestselling book about how understanding your own psychological makeup and attachment style can help you make and keep friends. Franco is a psychologist and a professor at the University of Maryland. Her book is called Platonic: How the Science of Attachment Can Help You Make–and Keep–Friends. This is episode three of a four part series in which we are doing some counter programming against the typical Valentine's Day fair. In this episode we talk about:Why friendship is undervalued in our society (while romantic love is overvalued) and why this is damaging on both a societal and individual levelThe impact of technology on our relationships as explained by something called “displacement theory”The biological necessity of social connection and the devastating physiological and psychological impacts of loneliness Attachment style and its relationship to our friendshipsWhat you can do to make friends, including being open or vulnerable (without oversharing)How to reframe social rejectionThe importance of generosityHow to handle conflict with your friendsThe difference between flaccid safety and dynamic safety in your friendshipsWhen to walk away from a relationship How to make friends across racial, gender, and socioeconomic linesHow to deal with social anxietyAnd how our evolutionarily wired negativity bias can impact the process of making friendsFull Shownotes: https://www.tenpercent.com/podcast-episode/marisa-g-franco-561See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Summary + Guest Bio:Episode 17 of the She is Kindred podcast marks the beginning of a brand new month and a brand new theme: “Love, Sex, and Marriage.” And while the weeks that follow will dive deep into a myriad of topics less commonly talked about within most circles, we wanted to take some time to acknowledge the women in our community who are not married first. We want to say that we see you too, sister. In your waiting. In your independence. In all the unexpected ways that life has brought you to this specific season of singleness. Your story matters just as much as the rest of us. With her guest, Kelly Witherbee, Britt wades into the murky waters of extended singleness and the implications of that both within the Church and public society. They discuss the struggles of singlehood, society's standard of family, and the strength that one develops when living alone. Their conversation hinges on the truth that those who are single, by choice or by chance, are more than worthy of having a seat at every table, even in - especially in - the Church. Kelly Witherbee is a school psychologist in the Midwest and a proud daughter, sister, and aunt to many. She loves Broadway musicals, British royalty, and you'll rarely find her without a book in her hand. She moonlights as a wedding photographer on the weekends and, as an Enneagram 2, spends the rest of her days investing in the lives of others. You can connect with her on Instagram at @kellywitherb.In this episode, Britt talks with Kelly Witherbee about: The struggles and unexpected blessings of extended singleness Ways that the Church should better honor single people within their communitiesGod can handle our big emotionsMental health and asking for helpHow singleness can shape one's view of self How married friends can support their single friendsThe importance of finding friends in similar life spacesEncouragement to anyone who is in a season of singlenessResources mentioned in this episode: 35:25 - “Identity, Imposter Syndrome and Imago Dei” with Sarah Southern Annie F. The alphabet Escapades of letter H is a story about Alphabet H being very lonely and then making lots of friends.Free activity sheets and other downloadable resources available at www.rituvaish.com/alphabet-escapades-letter-h.Send your artwork to rituvaish@gmail.com.TranscriptLetter H was very lonely and bored. He did not feel happy. So, he lazily went for a stroll to a nearby lake and sat on a rock next to it. He was throwing stones in the water and watching them splash the water."Ouch!" came a cry. Children, who could it be?Let's listen ahead. Two eyes, a stubby nose peeped out, “You are hurting me." It was a hippo peeping out. "Sorry, I am really sorry! " shouted the scared letter H.“Why are you throwing stones in the water?” yelled out the hippo.“I am bored," said the letter H.“Ummmm. We all get bored sometime or the other. But I have a solution in case you want to make new friends. That is only if you want.” Hippo waited for the Letter H's response.Letter H's eyes sparkled “Yes! Please. I want to make friends. I have none!”“It's hen's birthday and the horse, the hare, the honeybees and I are preparing for a big birthday surprise. We could use a little help and you could make new friends in return,” suggested hippo."Yes! Yes!” H hopped around."How can I help? How can I help, please tell me," he exclaimed. “We have a meeting here soon to discuss how to celebrate Hen's birthday, so why don't you stay back?" advised hippo.Soon, they heard the hoofs. Children, who was approaching? Yes, indeed it was the horse. The horse was seen galloping down the hill and he soon reached the lake. The honeybees buzzed and reached at the same time. Next, the hare came hopping.Letter H was super excited. Then he saw aa Hummingbird fluttering as she flew near the pond from its home in the nearby tree. Children, who all reached the pond?Yes, it was the Hippo, horse, honeybees, hare, and hummingbird. And not to forget letter H. Once they all assembled, Hippo introduced letter H, “This is letter H and he's very lonely. So, I invited him to help out for Hen's surprise party.”All the others burst out singing, “The more we get together, together, togetherThe more we get togetherThe happier are weFor my friends are your friends and your friends are my friendsThe more we get together, together, togetherThe more we get togetherThe happier are we!”“Thanks a lot. Please let me know how can I be of some help?” said a happy letter H.The hare was the first to suggest that they could all do a hopping dance for the hen.“Hippos can't hop! "shouted hippo.“Horses can't hop! "shouted horses. The bees buzzed, “You both can just move gently to the music while the hare and we bees dance to the chirping music of the hummingbird! ""We will also bring sweet honey,” suggested one of the bees.Without wasting time, the horse and hippo started practicing their moves and believe it or not, in no time they were moving to the beats of the music. “See! when you put your heart, you can learn anything,” said the hummingbird. H was dancing too, hopping to the music. He suddenly stopped and exclaimed, “I will bring party has for everybody.”The bees held each other's hand and danced around.H was indeed very happy now.The next day was hen's birthday. All the friends hid behind the rocks and hippo went underwater. Children, why do you think everybody wan hiding?Yes, because it was a surprise birthday party for the hen. When they heard the clucking, they knew the hen was walking towards the pond. They all came out from their hiding places and yelled, “Happy Birthday! Happy birthday, happy birthday dear hen. Happy Birthday, happy birthday happy birthday dear hen.”The hen was surprised, and she was ecstatic.Letter H gave the hats to his new friends. Then they all danced and ate the honey. The best was when the hen got her harp and played a nice tune on it.H was delighted to be in the company of new friends. The hen thanked all the friends for a delightful birthday party. From that day onwards letter H was never bored, as he had many friends. Hello Children! I am letter H. Fear, abandonment, betrayal, loss, sadness. These are all feelings that come up when a female friendship ends. Female friendship break-ups can teach us more about how we handle conflict than any relationship breakup with a romantic partner. And yet, when a friendship ends, we don’t talk about it. Why is that? Are you a Gen X woman who has been “ghosted” by a friend, leaving you confused and hurt? Or, have you had to end a friendship and wish you could’ve handled it differently? Now what? In this episode, Tina talks unapologetically about the pain, shame and perhaps delight that happens when a female friendship has come to an end. Topics include:Signs that a friendship is coming to an endWhy vulnerability prevents women from having difficult conversations about what is needed in a friendship What is “The Friendship Fade,” and does it work?Blocked and unfriended - the modern way to break up with friendsThe number one gift a broken friendship offers Why female friendships are important

In this episode of the Your Killer Life podcast, Tammey gives the microphone to her co-host, Griff Woodford who talks with guest Michael Baltierra in this special episode that is centered around the caregiver. Whether a cancer diagnosis, or any other long-term life altering disease, the caregiver is the patient’s key ally serving as a person of support and care. Often unassuming and occasionally ignored, we learn the firsthand the struggles, triumphs and needs of our unsung anchors. Griff and Mike share their caregiver stories, unique perspectives, and outline the pressures that are often felt by men as they address fear, emotion, stress and the often oppressive societal norms that are counter to the valid emotional needs and mental health of the caregiver. “…there's this big misconception, whether it's with the actual patient or the caregiver, that this is supposed to take a specific amount of time.” -Griff Woodford Click to tweet“That's the time where you sit there and reflect, and you're wonder what is going on. How am I going to do some self-care? How can I take care of myself and where can I get the support that I need? Because a lot of people think, especially when you're a guy, oh, you should just suck it up. You know, and just put in some intestinal fortitude and just carry on with your day. “Dude you're there to set the example.” When in reality, the whole thing is you're actually crumbling and you're falling apart…” -Michael BaltierraClick to tweetTopics in this Episode:IntroductionOur caregiver StoriesMale perspective and introspectionMission oriented mindsetCaregiving and patient partnershipTrained to limit emotionCaregiver resources for the workplace and finances and homeThe hard parts of caregivingLosing acquaintances and gaining friendsThe rewards of becoming strongerBecoming a resource for othersAdapting to the “after”The healthcare experience may not be the same for everyoneSigning offContact Information and Social Links:Website: yourkillerlife.comEmailInstagram: instagram.com/yourkillerlifeFacebook: facebook.com/yourkillerlife/YouTube: youtube.com/c/yourkillerlifeGuest Contact Information and Social Links:Website: mikebaltierra.comEmailInstagram: instagram.com/mikebaltierraphotoFacebook: facebook.com/mikebaltierraphoto/YouTube Cancer Vlog Playlist: https://bit.ly/34VzaA8Resources:Be a guest on the Your Killer Life PodcastSponsor the Your Killer Life PodcastBook Tammey or Griff as a speaker or podcast guestSnag Your Killer Life Swag!Check out the Your Killer Life blog posts, or the original blog, Killer Left Boob This podcast is professionally edited by Roth Media
