Visual Artist and educator, Lydia Panas and I have a wonderful conversation about her work including her books, Falling from Grace (self published), The Mark of Abel (Kehrer Verlag), and Sleeping Beauty (MW Editions). We talk about her use of allegorical themes as a way of pushing back against them and we talk extensively about how she works with and connects with her models and how all her work has a deep personal connection to her own epxeriences. http://www.lydiapanas.com ||| https://www.instagram.com/lydiapanas_/ ||| https://www.facebook.com/lydia.panas ||| https://www.kehrerverlag.com/en/lydia-panas-the-mark-of-abel-978-3-86828-229-0 ||| https://mweditions.com/books/lydia-panas-sleeping-beauty/ This podcast is sponsored by the Charcoal Book Club Begin Building your dream photobook library today at https://charcoalbookclub.com Lydia Panas is a visual artist working with photography and video. File Under: Slime by Christopher Michlig — a cultural history of Slime — was recently published by Hat & Beard Editions. What is slime? We are well acquainted with its qualities in conjunction with certain things from which we tend to recoil but to which we are also at times attracted. Despite being everywhere, slime is a surprisingly unexamined cultural phenomenon. File Under: Slime collates a cultural history of “slime” and “sliminess,” with particular emphasis on precedents in pop-culture, contemporary art, ecology, science fiction, literature, critical theory, and cinema. Artist and professor Christopher Michlig's research characterizes slime as a pervasive, oozing, cultural phenomenon, documenting instances of its evolving representations. The appearance of slime in such films as The Blob, Ghostbusters, and Poltergeist are diligently and humorously analyzed, commercial and graphic design precedents are incorporated, and the work of such artists as Lynda Benglis, Cindy Sherman, Robert Smithson, Sterling Ruby, and Jason Rhoades are discussed. Alongside a multitude of visual references, File Under: Slime is supplemented with literary and theoretical references from such writers as Jean Paul Sartre, Julia Kristeva, Mike Kelley, Rosalind Krauss, Laura Mulvey, and others. +++ SLIME: A NATURAL HISTORY by SUSANNE WEDLICH — a different but like-minded cultural history of slime — was also recently published by Melville House in New York. This groundbreaking, witty, and eloquent exploration of slime will leave you appreciating the nebulous and neglected sticky stuff that covers our world, inside and out. Slime exists at the interfaces of all things: between the organs and layers in our bodies, and between the earth, water, and air in the world, and is often produced in the fatal encounter between predator and prey. In this fascinating, ground-breaking book, Wedlich leads us on a scientific journey through the 3-billion-year history of slime—from the part it played in the evolution of life on this planet to the way it might feature in the post-human future. She also explores the cultural and emotional significance of slime, from its starring role in the horror genre to its subtle influence on Art Nouveau. +++ Susanne Wedlich studied biology and political science in Munich and has worked as a writer in Boston and Singapore. She is currently a freelance science journalist for Der Spiegel and National Geographic. She lives in Munich. Christopher Michlig, meanwhile, makes work in a wide range of media, including collage, printmaking, sculpture, and film. His work has been reviewed and featured in The Los Angeles Times, Mousse Magazine, Saatchi Online, Flavorpill, and New City and exhibited nationally and internationally.  Michlig received an MFA from Art Center College of Design, Pasadena, California and he is currently Associate Professor and area Coordinator of Core Studio at the University of Oregon, Eugene. The authors caught up this spring to discuss their books and mutual fascination with slime.

The Downward Facing Spiritual Spiral

What happens to the raw intimacy of the creative process thanks to technology and social media? Can they co-exist or is the intoxicating and addictive allure of tech a dark cloud that ultimately dampens the creative process? Today on the Spiritual Spiral, I'm thrilled to welcome growth marketer, writer and teacher, Nicole Cifani to the show. Nicole is the Senior Director of Growth Marketing at Thistle, she is a fiction writer and she is also a teacher at The Writers Studio. For years, Nicole has written about the arts and the impact of technology on our culture. Her writing has been featured in Thrive and Flavorpill and she is also a fervent fan of music. Nicole and I talk about the intimacy of the creative process, the ups and down that come in the midst of writing a book and she shares personal anecdotes about how she stays disciplined as a writer. We chat about her love for music and to this day why music has been such a valuable part of her life. We talk about finding "value" in creativity, where inspiration comes from and we talk about finding ways to allow tech and creativity to peacefully intermingle with one another. Nicole talks about what to expect from her class at the Writer's Studio, she shares stories about her own creative process and what inspired her to begin writing fiction. It's a wonderful and inspiring talk and be sure to find Nicole online at nicolecifani.com or consider taking her writing class by visiting writerstudio.com Remember, if you enjoy today's episode and you want to support the show, please subscribe to the podcast on iTUNES. Something I love about young children is that they don't yet have the self-consciousness yet, because they haven't faced much rejection yet, to hold back from simply asking someone to be their friend on the playground. That's how I felt when Tasha Blank and I connected, and the playground was Instagram. The conversation basically went, "Hey I like how you be via your photos and your words, let's be friends." And once I heard her story, I had to have her on the podcast. Today's conversation is the result of a new, innocent, and friendly desire to connect with a kindred soul. We get into altering brain chemistry without using substances, dance as a path to connection, how life is full of maps and it's up to us to discover new territories. This is a really fun one. I know you will discover dormant parts of yourself as you listen and I can't wait to hear what comes up when you do! About Tasha Blank: Founder of New York City's legendary afterwork party The Get Down + force behind the global Deep House Yoga movement, Tasha has been a pioneer of positive club culture for nearly a decade. She creates interactive sonic experiences that catalyze everything from underground warehouse parties and music festivals to morning raves and bass-heavy yoga events, and believes that dance is the quickest path to love in the here + now. Whether bringing in musicians for spontaneous jams at festivals, or collaborating with her performance group The Get Down Crew to create infectiously high energy atmospheres, she works frequently with a wide range of live musicians including cellists, electric violinists, percussionists, full horn sections, beat boxers and MCs. Her work with traditional African musicians has brought polyrhythms to 4 on the floor, and her live layered vocals add a soaring beauty and depth to both her deep minimal and big room tribal sonic journeys. Her DJ sets meet you in the moment + invite you on a physio-sonic trip into a newer, bigger you. Clients, collaborations and features have included Cielo, Output, YouAreSoLucky, FunkBox, Envision Festival, Lightning in a Bottle, Burning Man, House of Yes, Google, Adidas, Samsung, W Hotel, Daybreaker, Luna bar, Yoga Journal, Wanderlust Festival, Lululemon, Elena Brower, Shiva Rea, Stephanie Snyder, DailyMail, Summit Series, Thump, New York Magazine, Thrillist, Refinery29, Flavorpill, Elephant Journal, Mantra Magazine, and MindBodyGreen. Her weekly emails deliver inspirational words and extraordinary beats to thousands of music-hungry dancing maniacs. And more than anything: she wants to see you let wild your most liberated badassery. In this episode, Tasha shares: 1. Finding yourself using dance as a path to connection 2. Discerning and interest from a calling 3. Languageless knowing - what it is and how you may experience it
