The Anatomy of Exile by Zeeva Bukai (Delphinium Books 2025) opens in the aftermath of the 1967 Six Day War, when Tamar Abadi's sister-in-law is killed by what looks like a terrorist attack but turns out to be the tragic end of Hadas's love affair with a Palestinian poet. Hadas and her brother Salim, were born in and exiled from Syria, and now Salim moves his wife and children to the U.S. When a Palestinian family moves into their Brooklyn building and their teenage daughter falls in love with the teenage son, Tamar fears that history will repeat while Salim finds commonality in the family's language and culture. Tamar struggles to separate the two teenagers and grapples with her children, her marriage, and her identity outside of Israel in this novel about love, marriage, history, culture, and politics. Zeeva Bukai was born in Israel and raised in New York City. Her honors include a Fellowship at the New York Center for Fiction and residencies at Hedgebrook, and Byrdcliffe Artist in Residence program. On part 2 of this week's episode, we interview Cartoonist Dahlia Ramirez (also known as Dolly). Dahlia didn't start out to be a cartoonist, but the siren call of cartooning got to her. (Hmmm, I just remembered how that story goes. Probably not a good metaphor for being lured into cartooning). She has a great story about how a cartoon she did for McSweeny's led to her writing “Sex and the Single Panda”. A great book about The Revolting Pursuit Of Love In The Animal Kingdom. It's very funny and loaded with more than you ever wanted to know about the mating habits of animals.Dahlia's cartoons can be found in the New Yorker, McSweeny's, Air Mail and the Public Transportation Magazine (see link below!) You can order her book at her website:https://www.dollyonpaper.comAnd you can check out the Public Transportation Magazine here (or find it on random subway cars in New York):https://www.publictransportmagazine.comOn Part 1 of the episode, we discuss the current contests:Winning captions for New Yorker contest #891 (Low and inside trading). Finalists for contest #893 (Treehouse of captions). Current New Yorker contest #895 (UFO Landing Strip Mall). Send us questions or comments to:  Cartooncaptioncontestpodcast@gmail.com

Addressing the meaning crisis, the discussion acknowledges various forms of intelligence and emphasizes the transformative nature of human experiences. This episode highlights the importance of rethinking how we see ourselves, the ongoing process of self-reconstruction, and the value of interdisciplinary dialogue in deepening our understanding of human existence and consciousness. No, I'm not talking about me. I'm talking about Daveo Mathias, a talented writer and creative human who got hammered by APU's evangelical culture to the point where he stopped believing in God because of his time there. As a new freshman, Daveo got a story published in the prestigious and new at the time web site McSweeny's. And while that might have offered a young writer some serious writing cred at a normal university, for Daveo, it was just one in a list of sins he committed simply by being a thinking, living human. Like many others, he found his people, but he still feels the pain of being rejected by an intractable, unforgivable culture that demanded conformity of its White students. As a producer, sometimes you have to deal with requests from the talented folks that you work with, week in and out. That said, this episode is nearly 80 shows into making TVK and Amber is absolutely the first ever person to ask specifically to have Kate review the song that saved her life. I honestly wish Katie had been a little against type and found some of the magic that Amber obviously did when she was younger.Amber is a talented freelance writer with a list of clips as long as your arm. You can read some of them on her website (where you can also find examples of her storytelling and other writing credits -- including a piece she did for McSweeny's). You can also follow her on Instagram and Twitter. As always, remember to follow the show on instagram, twitter and facebook and to get over to the website to sign up for the TVK mailing list (which is the best place to get updates on when season 5 of the show will be available).See you next week! Be kind to someone (even yourself) today.

I know what's best for you - Stories on reproductive freedom." Zusätzlich zu diesem amerikanischen Kontext gibt es auch ein internationales Supplement, "I know what's best for you all over the world" mit Texten unter anderem aus China, Afghanistan, Argentinien. Hier mein Text aus I know what's best for you.

How to get into Product Management

Shaun has the respect of many a product manager who's worked with him. I worked at the same company as he did for a few months, but didn't get the opportunity to work on any projects with him. Despite that lost opportunity, every time I get to chat with him he demonstrates his unique, thoughtful and creative perspective on the world.  Stay tuned till the end for a dramatic reading of "McSweeny's Internet Tendency, Short Imagined Monologues, I'm Comic Sans, A$$hole", ready by Mr. Shaun Moon. Regenerative Skills
Bringing farmland back into the hands of our communities, with Ian McSweeny of The Agrarian Trust

Regenerative Skills

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 14, 2020 59:33

One of the biggest challenges that I've heard repeatedly both in the interviews in this series on regenerative agriculture as well as with peers and clients that I've collaborated with, is the difficulty for aspiring farmers to get access to land. This is true back in the States as well as in Europe and other parts of the world where I've traveled, and it's part of a much larger problem in the trends of land ownership that reduce land to a commodity. As prices for land soar and the rapidly aging population of farmers struggle to keep their businesses afloat, we're entering into a tipping point. Massive amounts of land are now set to change ownership in the coming decades, and the hands they'll end up in are yet to be determined. Though from what I can tell, there's no shortage of young and motivated people looking to get into farming, this land ownership issue is keeping many of them from getting started.  I've been looking for a while at creative approaches to farmland access and tenure, and in my search I found Ian McSweeny the organizational director of Agrarian Trust through his role in organizing and advocating for a return to community owned land and commonland management. Far from being a new or novel approach to land stewardship, these forms of management are much older than private ownership and might just hold the key to large scale landscape regeneration by returning this precious resource to the whole community.  Ian's career and his life's work has been focused on the human connection to soil and food. He first worked as a social worker focused on developing outdoor experience based education programs. Later he sought more direct work with the connections to soil and food in real estate, by founding a brokerage and consulting company to focus on prioritizing conservation, agriculture, and community within typical land development. Most recently, he served as Executive Director of the Russell Foundation, a private foundation focused on assisting landowners and farmers through customized approaches to farmland ownership, conservation, management, and stewardship.  Ian has also participated in many farmland and food systems initiatives and has served as a consultant to a number of organizations, and was recognized as a “40 under 40” leader in New Hampshire and was also selected for the Leadership Institute at Food Solutions New England.  In this interview Ian speaks about farmland transfer, conservation, secure tenure, and fundraising models across the US. He also gives inspiring examples of the first handful of members across the country that are blazing a new trail for communities invested in their agricultural future and the diversity of people who steward their farms. This is just one potential way to bring land equity back to the commons and I'm still very interested in exploring other models and ways for a whole new generation of people looking to care for the natural capital that we share to gain affordable access to land, so if you know of any other ideas or organizations that are working on these issues, please reach out to me through email at info(at)abundantedge.com or come and join the conversation on our dedicated facebook page. I'm really looking forward to bringing more voices on these topics to the podcast. First Draft Episode #210: Josh Gondelman Josh Gondelman, comedian, TV writer for shows like Last Week Tonight with John Oliver and Desus and Mero, and debut author of memoir Nice Try: Stories of Best Intentions and Mixed Results, talks about coming up in comedy, fumbling his breakout moment with the viral Modern Seinfeld Twitter account, and learning that being a “nice” person isn’t the same as being a good person. Links and Topics Mentioned In This Episode In addition to Nice Try, you should also check out Josh’s standup specials: Dancing on a Weeknight (2019); Physical Whisper (from 2016); and Everything’s the Best! (2011). Nancy Kerrigan was the subject of one of the most bizarre crimes in all of sports (really worth watching The Price of Gold, an excellent 30 for 30 documentary about the Kerrigan-Harding incident), which was documented in the film I, Tonya, which Josh’s parents did not see out of loyalty to Kerrigan Early on Josh performed in the chorus of The Music Man We decide that literary humor is to comedy as Garrison Keillor is to Chris Rock Josh wrote a spec script for It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia Josh was contributing to places like McSweeny’s and New York magazine when he first moved to the city Josh co-founded the @SeinfeldToday Twitter account with his friend Jack P. Moore (playwright and sitcom writer for shows like Dear White People), which went viral and got him lots of professional opportunities Josh made an impression on Jim Gaffigan with a joke about the wisdom of the justice system in D2: The Mighty Ducks when he was getting his feet wet as a standup in New York City Josh talks about establishing authority as a standup onstage, which reminded me of Pete Holmes addressing how he looks (more like a youth pastor than a comedian) on his 2013 special, Nice Try, The Devil. You can see a great example of Josh doing something similar in his 2019 sets on Late Night with Seth Meyers and The Late Late Show with James Cordon. Josh also got advice and encouragement about this from fellow comedian Pete Lee. Josh got a big win when he was able to write for Billy on the Street, featuring Billy Eichner One of the notable segments from Last Week Tonight with John Oliver was an early one about net neutrality, with a bit at the end (which Josh credits to Geoffrey Haggerty, a comedy writer for shows like The Daily Show and Last Week Tonight with John Oliver) calling for viewers to write in to the FCC. So many viewers wrote to the FCC that its system crashed, and the government investigated whether the onslaught of feedback was from actual citizens or a coordinated DDoS attack. Tim Carvell, head writer for The Daily Show who left with John Oliver to create Last Week Tonight with John Oliver Josh is now the producer and writer for Desus and Mero on Showtime. Before he wrote for them, he was a fan of Desus and Mero’s podcast, Boedga Boys, and their TV show, Desus & Mero, on VICELAND. Josh does pep talks on Twitter from time to time, and initially was approached to write a book based on that premise. But he resisted that idea because internet darling Jonny Sun (playwright, academic, and author and illustrator of Everyone’s a Aliebn When Ur a Aliebn Too -- listen to Jonny Sun’s episode of First Draft here) had already illustrated the famous Twitter pep talks written by Lin-Manuel Miranda (actor, composer, and playwright of Hamilton and In the Heights) for the book, G’Morning, G’night!: Little Pep Talks For Me & You. I was reading Brené Brown’s Daring Greatly: How the Courage to be Vulnerable Transforms the Way We Live, Love, Parent, and Lead, at the same time as Josh’s memoir, which actually was a beneficial co-reading experience (FTR I also recommend Brown’s The Gifts of Imperfection: Let Go of Who You Think You’re Supposed to Be and Embrace Who You Are on audiobook! It’s read by Lauren Fortgang and she does a great job!) Josh was on a panel with journalist and author Liz Plank--whose most recent book, “For the Love of Men: A New Vision for Mindful Masculinity”, is on sale now!--about shifting concepts of masculinity Nikki Glaser, a comedian and radio host who Josh admires, gave him pivotal advice early in his career I want to hear from you! What impresses me the most about David Kadavy is how transparent he is about his struggle to do his own creative work. In fact, this very struggle is grist for his artistic mill. David has a new book about to launch called The Heart to Start all about connecting with the art inside you.    How can I not love to read a book like this. This week on the MashReads Podcast, we read and discuss Hannah Tinti's novel The Twelve Lives of Samuel Hawley with author Hannah Tinti herself!  The novel is a father/ daughter story about what it means to be a hero, and the price we pay to protect the people we love the most. The book follows two stories, told in parallel: The history of Samuel Hawley and his "twelve lives" (which are the twelve bullet wounds he's received while working as a criminal smuggler), told side-by-side with the coming of age story of Loo, Samuel's daughter. When Samuel and Loo settle into a small New England seaside town, they quickly learn that the past Hawley's desperately tried to escape is still defining their present. Join us as we talk about father/ daughter stories, the significance of whales in literature, and being an outsider. And if you want to see footage of the greasy pole, a real life tradition that Hannah writes about in The Twelve Lives of Samuel Hawley, you can check out her tweets from the event here and here and here. And as always, we close the show with recommendations: Hannah has been reading a lot of comics and recommends: Saga by Brian K Vaughan and Fiona Staples, East of West by Jonathan Hickman and Nick Dragotta, Sweet Tooth by Jeff Lemire, and Mind Mgmt by Matt Kindt. Aliza recommends Glow, Netflix's new series about the world of women wrestlers in the '80s. "Speaking of complex femininity, y'all need to watch the new Netflix series Glow. It is amazing!" MJ recommends Grief Is The Thing With Feathers, a postmodern novel about grief by Max Porter. "It's really beautiful and what I love about this book is that it captures how mundane grief can be ... it's a moving, really weird, and really beautiful novel." MJ also recommends "Laverne Cox boldly addresses the one issue the LGBTQ community doesn't want to talk about," an interview with Laverne Cox by Mashable's social good writer Katie Dupere about inclusion in Pride and the LGBTQ+ community. Peter recommends McSweeny's article "11 Ways That I, a White Man, Am Not Priviledged" and "It's just a quick read, and it takes a turn, as it does, and it's pretty funny. I don't want to say more."

ARTHUR BRADFORD reads from his collection TURTLEFACE AND BEYOND: STORIES

Skylight Books Author Reading Series

Turtleface and Beyond: Stories (Farrar Straus Giroux) Please welcome back to Skylight Books, one of our favorite short story writers, Arthur Bradford!  Paddling down a remote, meandering river, Georgie's friend Otto decides to do something both spectacular and stupid: He scales a sandy cliff that rises from the water and runs down its steep face, preparing for a triumphant running dive. As his friends look on, they watch something awful unfold: Otto lands with an odd smack and knocks himself unconscious, blood spilling from his nose and mouth. Georgie arrives on the scene first and sees a small turtle, its shell cracked, floating just below the water's surface. Otto and the turtle survive the collision, though both need help, and Georgie finds his compassions torn. This title story sets the tone for the rest of Arthur Bradford's Turtleface and Beyond, a strangely funny collection featuring prosthetically limbed lovers, a snakebitten hitchhiker turned wedding crasher, a lawyer at the end of his rope, a menage a trois at Thailand's Resort Tik Tok, and a whole host of near disasters, narrow escapes, and complicated victories, all narrated by Georgie, who struggles with his poor decisions but finds redemption in the telling of each of his tales. Big-hearted and hilariously high-fueled, Turtleface and Beyondmarks the return of a beloved and unforgettable voice in fiction. Praise for Turtleface and Beyond: “Arthur Bradford's work is uncategorizable and unprecedented, but if pressed, you could call it the improbable spawn of Raymond Carver and Roald Dahl. His stories are hilarious and strange, playful and deadpan, and often involve animals and strange injuries to these animals or their human friends. The world of Bradford's fiction is populated by dreamers, doofuses, banalities, and mysteries, and somehow it's a world you don't want to leave.”—Dave Eggers “Turtleface and Beyond is filled with glorious little fables that are both yummy and nourishing.”—Matt Stone, co-creator of South Park and The Book of Mormon “Arthur Bradford has the strange, poetic humor of a real writer, but his outlandish plots involving animals and/or underachievers read like pulpy page-turners. While reading Turtleface and Beyond, I couldn't wait to find out what happened to these injured reptiles and oversexed beach bums.”—Sarah Vowell “Arthur Bradford's stories are told plainly yet seductively. You might call them funny and lovely and laconic until you get to the twist and damage that swims beneath them like an unseen snapping turtle. They take straight roads to crooked places and I would read them all day until I was done and you should too.”—John Hodgman “Writer and filmmaker Bradford will appeal to David Sedaris fans willing to visit the wrong side of the tracks . . . With bad choices and bizarre situations aplenty, Turtleface and Beyond encourages the reader simply to laugh at the strange turns life can take.”—Booklist Arthur Bradford is an O. Henry Award–winning writer and Emmy-nominated filmmaker. He is the author of Dogwalker, and his writing has appeared in Esquire, McSweeny's, VICE, and Men's Journal. He lives in Portland, Oregon, and serves as the co-director of Camp Jabberwocky, the nation's longest-running residential summer camp for people with disabilities.
