Research shows that multi-channel donors can be worth more than donors who give only online or only offline. But do nonprofits treat multi-channel donors like they're worth two or three times more to their organization? A recent experiment looked at how nonprofits respond after a gift and the results could surprise you. Gabe Cooper, CEO of Phoenix-based Virtuous Software joins the program to talk about the study they embarked on with NextAfter Institute, titled, The State of Multichannel Donor Communications: How 119 Organizations Are Using Online and Offline Channels to Engage New Donors. The report examines how charities responded to donations that were made both online and offline. Donations of $20 were made to 119 organizations in the spring of 2020. Communications were then tracked across email, direct mail, telephone and text messaging for four months, culminating with the final 57-page report. "We seem to know intuitively that communicating with people on multiple channels works," Cooper said. "The data over and over again in these studies suggests that communicating on multiple channels gets far higher engagement from donors and so the fact that we are not really mailing all our online donors or vice versa...that is a little bit shocking because it seems to be a pretty big disconnect from how we know donors behave," he said. "Only 3% of the organizations we gave to were actually doing multi-channel well, meaning, somebody came in on one channel, and then they started engaging with them on both in a meaningful way or even more channels," Cooper said. "So, that was the big shocker for me was even though multichannel gives are worth 300% more LTV [lifetime value] than a typical single-channel donor, there's just very few nonprofits that are doing this after a first gift." There were some other surprising findings -- both good and bad -- and several organizations were cited for being stellar with their communications, with Cooper in particular noting Buckner International and Doctors Without Borders. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/nonprofittimes/message
It's easy to get the impression that tech founders are like Olympians. They work insane hours, they consume biologically impossible amounts of supplements, and if you haven't made it by the time you're 25, it's probably not going to happen for you. If you've ever had that thought. Or if you've ever thought that the “big change” you wanted to make in your life needed to happen before you had kids, a mortgage, or a Netflix account…then this week's episode is for you! We're joined on the podcast this week by Gabe Cooper, CEO and Founder of Virtuous, a social-good software company committed to using technology to help charities accomplish incredible things. Gabe founded Virtuous in 2014, when he was well into his mid-thirties with five kids and a successful software consulting practice. Not exactly the life stage or the “risk profile” you envision for a typical startup founder. Gabe shares how he was able to de-risk the early stages of Virtuous and ease his way into his new life as a tech founder. He talks about how his role has changed as Virtuous has grown from five employees to fifty and we contemplate whether or not tech founders are sociopaths. Gabe and Virtuous are on a mission to do big things, and – whether there's a startup inside you dying to get out or just a new passion waiting to be pursued – this week's conversation is a great reminder that it's never too late. Give it a listen. And then get #BackToWork! Gabe on LinkedInVirtuous on the web

Gabe Cooper is the CEO of Virtuous, a responsive nonprofit fundraising platform and CRM. Virtuous gives nonprofits the ability to activate new supporters, deepen existing partnerships, assist with marketing, and serves as a CRM all-in-one. Their company currently has a little over 30 employees and is continuing to grow. Gabe began his career in software development during the dot-com boom and later transitioned into working at a nonprofit leading their technical team. Since then, he has started three businesses: an agency, a golfing application, and now, Virtuous. His motivation for starting Virtuous and continuing work in the nonprofit sector:“Giving your time, talent, money away is one of the most personal things you’ll ever do. Super close to your heart. If you have a family member that gets cancer, you’ll give to cancer research. If you adopt a pet, that pet becomes part of your family. The entire rest of the world - Amazon, Netflix, Strava, they are all hyper-personalized to me. They are giving me super personal experiences. My experiences when I give to a nonprofit are hyper-impersonal. That should not be the case in 2020.” What successful nonprofits are made of: They break down silos. Marketing teams talk to sales teams. They talk about what is going on between each area of the organization.Listen more than they talk. Great nonprofits will listen to their donors and prioritize building relationships. They ruthlessly innovate. They are taking notes from startups and incorporating some of those innovative processes. Why they spent so much time developing their software before releasing it: “If we’re going to sell an enterprise solution as a system of record to nonprofits who depend on our software day in and day out, it can’t be half-baked.”“I like the fail fast mentality: ‘Fail fast and iterate.’ What I like even better is not failing quite as much.”His advice to anyone starting a business: “If you don't know the vertical or the domain, don’t start something there. Start something around what you know and care about deeply. It’s going to give you so much traction. I know you may think it’s boring or less sexy...Start with what you know, because it’s going to be so much more successful.”Their greatest challenge:“Our biggest challenge is attracting and retaining great talent and making sure our culture pushes through the whole organization in a meaningful way.”Additional Links:Learn more about Virtuous: https://www.virtuous.org/Follow along with Gabe: https://twitter.com/virtuousgabeGabe mentions the book and methodology called The Lean Startup, you can check it out here: http://theleanstartup.com/Another book mentioned is called What You Do Is Who You Are by Ben Horowitz about creating company culture. Gabe Cooper is the Founder and CEO of the all-in-one nonprofit growth platform, Virtuous. Virtuous is a responsive fundraising platform designed to help nonprofit organizations build lasting relationships with all their donors. After serving in a leadership role at a large nonprofit in the early 2000s, Gabe went on to help build a series of successful products in the nonprofit and profit-focused sectors, including multiple Apple award-winning mobile apps. Gabe's drive stems from a passion for creating market-defining software, helping charities reimagine generosity, and increase their impact. In this episode… Have you heard? There's a donor retention crisis in nonprofit organizations. As many as 76% of donors who give a single gift to your organization will never give you a gift again. That's a massive problem—and as nonprofit professionals, how should we respond? How do we treat every donor like a major donor? How do we build personal relationships with donors at scale? Gabe Cooper says it starts by putting systems in place to help listen to donors better and respond to them quicker—all in a personalized way. Whether it's done through marketing automation or suggesting the right gift at the right time, Gabe says nonprofits that implement these strategies see an average 12% increase in donor retention and a 10% increase in average gift size. Learn more about using automation tools to increase donor retention, boost generosity, and build deeper relationships with donors on this episode of the Philanthropy212 Podcast with Penny Cowden and Virtuous Founder and CEO, Gabe Cooper. Together, they discuss how nonprofits can maximize their efforts through automation, responsive fundraising, and why it's important to build your systems now. Keep listening for more!
Gabe Cooper, Virtuous' CEO and founder joins The Responsive Fundraising Podcast to discuss what we can glean from the events of 2020 and how fundraisers should pivot to maximize the potential of 2021. 2020 has been a year of massive change for nonprofits. Everything has changed from entire teams going remote overnight to a chaotic election season, to a civil rights movement driving systemic change, to the devastating impact of COVID-19. During the discussion Gabe shares six fundraising strategies nonprofit teams can carry forward into 2021. 6 Fundraising Strategies To Help You Grow 1) You must know your donors. And in order to know them, you must listen. 2) Generosity begets generosity. 3) Let 2021 be the year you get educated on donor advised funds and planned giving.4) Don’t let the crisis go wasted.5) Double down on your efforts to generate sustainable revenue.6) Plan out your strategy, but do it with a pencil, not a pen. https://www.virtuous.org/blog/2021-fundraising-strategies/https://www.linkedin.com/in/gabecooper/

From entire teams going remote overnight, to a chaotic election season, to a civil rights movement driving systemic change, to the devastating impact of COVID-19, everything has changed. During the discussion Gabe shares six fundraising strategies nonprofit teams can carry forward into 2021. 6 Fundraising Strategies To Help You Grow 1) You must know your donors. And in order to know them, you must listen. One of the silver linings of 2020 is that nonprofits are increasingly committed to better listen to donors. When COVID-19 hit our shores and lockdowns began, a lot of fundraisers wondered if they should even be asking for money. What are my donors thinking? Do they still care about my cause? These questions inevitably raised a larger existential question: why don’t we already know what our donors are thinking? Why don’t we have an open line of communication with our donors already? Many leading nonprofits have quickly pivoted in 2020 to better listening to donors and trying to build more authentic relationships. Giving to a great cause is deeply personal and requires a two-way relationship. If you don’t have that personal relationship, then generosity is never going to happen at scale. Most nonprofits have a direct connection to major donors but “everyday” small and mid-tier donors are often just a name in the database. To create predictable generosity and impact, nonprofits can’t afford to abandon the everyday donor. They must strive to adopt systems and strategies that listen to the needs of donors at scale and treat every donor personally. The more you listen, the more you begin to understand areas of interest, giving opportunities, and how each person wants to connect with the cause. Responsive fundraising is fueled by these signals and equips you to deepen relationships as you move each donor through a journey with your cause. The increase in generosity we’ve seen this year can be the new normal, but it does require a commitment to being massively personal and earning trust at scale. 2) Generosity begets generosity. When you are given an incredible gift, isn’t it instinctual to ask “how can I give back?” This truth has to be top of mind for nonprofit. You have to think about how you deliver value to your donors before ever making an ask. Think deeply and carefully about what your donors want. What makes their heart beat faster? What do they get excited about? What are they passionate about? Deliver value around those things. How do you love on your donors and deliver value with no strings attached? If you can do that well you can unlock a new level of generosity. It’s also deeply important to begin breaking down silos at your organization in order to bring your donors closer to the impact of their gift. We work with several organizations that have their program team call donors every month. They don’t ask for money; they just say “thank you.” They ask if there are any questions they can answer. And then they tell stories about the great work the organization is doing. This makes generosity cultural across the whole organization. COVID has afforded us an opportunity to dismantle silos across organization lines. As a result, many organizations are beginning to shorten the distance between their donors and the good that they’re doing in the world. Removing those silos brings the donor in very close

We have a massive amount of aging wealth in this country, and many fundraisers don’t yet have a robust strategy for planned giving. This has to be a part of your fundraising approach. Be courageous enough as a nonprofit to have that conversation about donor advised funds, planned giving options, and tactics to protect wealth that enable more generous giving. We live in a tech-driven world where social feeds, news feeds, and web/email experiences are hyper-personalized to our individual interests or community. We’ve seen platforms like GoFundMe leverage this personalized, community-driven technology to create a new kind of giving experience – because it’s so much easier to give to a family down the street that’s hurting than it is to give to some big nameless, faceless organization. Leading nonprofits are now acknowledging this change in the way donors are choosing to give. And then stepping in to create more personal experiences for their constituents. The organizations that flourish in 2021 and beyond are the ones that are able to create those more personal relationships at scale, not just with major donors, but with all donors. 4) Don’t let the crisis go wasted. Crisis is a great driver of innovation. This is a great time to reset, to make some hard decisions, and put ourselves on a trajectory for flourishing in the next decade. It’s been really exciting to see organizations that were previously stuck, but are now focused on making innovative changes to move their cause forward. Before this year, their donor retention was slightly worse than their new donor acquisition. They were losing five percent a year and scared to death of change. COVID has been a wake up call. They’ve been forced to innovate. They’re listening to their donors. And they’ve righted the ship. If your organization hasn’t taken this important step, take this moment to step back and ask hard questions about the changes needed to increase your impact. 5) Double down on your efforts to generate sustainable revenue. If you want to make a predictable, sustainable difference in the world, you have to have predictable, sustainable revenue. And you don’t get predictable, sustainable revenue from one-off big checks. You get predictable, sustainable revenue from an army of several thousand donors giving $100 a month. I want to challenge you to create monthly giving products that deliver value to the donor and help them engage. Donors who are excited to give $100 a month for the next ten years create a predictable mechanism for sustained impact. Not only do monthly giving products create predictable, sustainable revenue, they also build an army of advocates for your cause. There’s nothing like an army of several thousand donors who just won’t shut up about the difference they are making through your organization. 6) Plan out your strategy, but do it with a pencil, not a pen. 2020 has served as one giant reminder that we don’t know what awaits us. It’s important to have a strategy, but we need to hold our plans loosely while we start executing. Waiting for the pandemic to be over is not the right solution. You have to be courageous enough to act now to make strategy changes. It’s time to act. Create a best case plan and a worst case plan. Then think carefully about your expenses and your staff, knowing that you can go with the worst case plan, if necessary. Align your team around big goals to accomplish on a quarterly basis. In our changing world, a quarterly cadence of setting big, hairy, audacious goals, and then having the permission to reset those goals quarterly is a really healthy way to approach 2021. 2020 has tested us all, not least of which nonprofits and fundraisers. But if you can sift through the challenges, find the lessons, and apply them to 2021, then the sky is really the limit for your organization. Let’s go change the world. https://www.virtuous.org/blog/2021-fundraising-strategies/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/gabecooper/ ssive change for nonprofits. Removing those silos brings the donor in very close. 3) Let 2021 be the year you get educated on donor advised funds and planned giving. Gabe Cooper is CEO at Virtuous Software, Founder of The Modern Nonprofit Fundraiser Podcast, and Author of Responsive Fundraising. We got together recently to talk about the concept of Responsive Fundraising, and what it means for the future of the nonprofit sector. What's exciting is that the concept of Responsive Fundraising doesn't require you to throw out everything you're doing and start over completely. You don't have to lose ground in order to improve donor relationships and increase revenue. Responsive Fundraising is really about applying the hyper-personalization that Americans are accustomed to in their daily life to their charitable giving experience. It's about using data you have at hand (or that you can get your hands on) to develop highly personalized donor experiences that communicate to your donors that you value them, you know them, and you are committed to providing them with a meaningful experience every time they interact with your organization. Here are Gabe's key points about Responsive Fundraising: It's less about tactics and technology and more about shifting your mindset. The success of Responsive Fundraising requires that you Listen (i.e., collecting more and better data, and understanding how it influences donor behavior), Connect (i.e., how can you use simple marketing automation to deliver relevant messages to your constituents at the exact time they are most likely to want it and engage with it?), and Adjust (i.e., creating a feedback loop so that you are modifying your organizational engagement approach based on what you see and hear from your donors as you deliver them this new experience). Responsive Fundraising doesn't require to stop mass fundraising activities like direct mail, email, and telemarketing. Instead, it gives you a framework for making those interactions more meaningful (and more valuable) to the donor. You don't have to burn your entire program down and start from scratch. You can start small, with just two or three key elements. Once you prove out the value in small ways, use that success to increase the scale of Responsive Fundraising in your charity. Embracing and deploying a Responsive Fundraising philosophy and strategy in your organization doesn't require you to upend everything you're doing and change staff. It does, however, require that everyone be aligned around the goal, and willing to learn and change the way they've worked in the past. Change of any kind -- but especially change like this -- requires a willingness to take risk and embrace failure in the service of creating something better for those you serve. As Gab

Unless you're not paying attention, we all recognize that the world has changed. And business as usual isn't going to work for a while, maybe never again. It's time to rethink our fundraising practices. It's time to get responsive. Today, I am delighted to have Gabe Cooper with me on The Fundraising Talent Podcast. Gabe and his team at Virtuous have just released a great new book, Responsive Fundraising, which I suspect will become the new playbook for those charitable organizations who want to ready themselves in the new normal. Gabe and I are going to pull back the curtain on what we mean when we say "the future of fundraising is responsive." Gabe is the Founder and CEO of Virtuous, a software platform helping nonprofits grow giving. Gabe has a true passion for creating market-defining software and helping charities re-imagine generosity. In Gabe's new book, readers will learn what the data tells us about the modern donor and their generosity habits. They will receive step-by-step responsive fundraising plays they can implement right away to improve their current fundraising tactics. Plus, they’ll get a look into how responsive nonprofits are shifting their internal teams to create a more collaborative, successful organization. If you'd like to be a guest on The Fundraising Talent Podcast, recently ranked as the #1 nonprofit podcast in the US and UK by Chartable, let us know. All you've got to have is a big idea or bold opinion about fundraising. No experts, no scripts - just real, meaningful conversation about our shared profession. As always, we are extremely grateful to OneCause for being our sponsor.
We’re changing things. We’re creating a space where ideas and people focused on fundraising for our world’s most important causes can collide. Why? The world your nonprofit is fundraising in has changed. This has shifted what today’s donor expects and they’re voting with their giving (engagement and dollars). Yet, nonprofits are handcuffed to models that were designed for donors that no longer exist. You need a new approach. And, Gabe Cooper, the founder and CEO of Virtuous, talks about how that new approach should be responsive fundraising. Responsive fundraising puts the donor at the center of fundraising activities, personalizes engagement, and treats ALL donors like major donors. We know a world where nonprofits are more responsive is one that is better for the entire generosity ecosystem and will grow giving and social impact. So, we’re curating conversations with nonprofit leaders and top fundraising thinkers to illuminate responsive fundraising strategies and highlight how modern nonprofits are becoming responsive

Personalization and customized content is everywhere. From recommended products on your Amazon homepage to the local pizza place knowing your order before you call, businesses have figured out how to deliver custom content to their customers. Nonprofits have to catch up. Those who can will see tremendous lift in their giving. The good news is, marketing automation can help you figure out what your donors are interested in, and enable you to deliver personalized content on a massive scale with just a few hours of work. In this episode of the Go Beyond Podcast, we sat down with Gabe Cooper of Virtuous CRM to discuss why it's critical for nonprofits to focus on scaling their ability to deliver personal content to donors across the giving spectrum. More engaged donors = higher lifetime value across the board. Giving is one of the most personal things you’ll ever do. The causes we care about have affected our lives very directly, but the nonprofit world has lagged behind businesses in tailoring their communication at the individual level. Many dream of combining the principles of unschooling with the resources of public school — and Gabe Cooper is one of those few who has actually done it. In this episode Gabe discusses “Unschool” (sanjuan.edu/unschool), the program he founded in the San Juan Unified School District of Sacramento, California. We talk about his disillusionment as a public school teacher and administrator, what inspired him to start Unschool, his victories and challenges so far, his commitment to equity via public education, and his plan for keeping Unschool alive in the future. Gabe also offers practical advice for other public school teachers who want to convince their own school districts to approve such an initiative.
