“I couldn't become a foster parent because I'd get too attached.” This is a sentiment we've heard many times from those considering foster care. We know that foster care is full of the good and the hard; both beauty and brokenness. Overcoming our fears and holding space for both of these things is no easy task. And in my guest's experience, the fear of getting too attached is the very thing that makes you a good candidate to become a foster parent. Caitlyn Baten has been married to her best friend, Tim, for six years. She's an adoptive and foster mom, is passionate about advocacy and ethical storytelling, and is a devoted follower of Christ. Caitlyn spent most of her professional career in the counter-trafficking space and now works for Buckner International where she comes alongside churches and engages them in the domestic and international work they do. In this episode, Caitlyn shares her honest experience of becoming a foster parent, why becoming attached to a whole family is important, practical advice for preparing for visits with biological parents, and the importance of giving yourself space for heavy emotions when a child reunifies. Since the beginning of time, God's design for humanity has always been to be a giant family spread throughout the earth. So what happened?Because of the power of sin in our world, families are broken, children become orphans, and many feel alone and isolated, as if they don't belong. Dr. Albert Reyes with Buckner International joins us today to share a hopeful message about God's design for his family.Dr. Albert Reyes is the author of Never Alone: The Power of Family to Inspire Hope and Hope Now: Peace, Healing, and Justice When the Kingdom Comes Near. He serves as the President and CEO of Buckner International, an underwriter of Faith & Finance. The Importance of FamiliesSadly, there is a growing effort to undermine the family structure. Strong families are critical to communities, cities, and any organization of humanity. Through Buckner International, they see the impact daily of providing strong families for children who need them and supporting existing families to thrive.Lessons from Biblical FamiliesExamining the families we see in the Bible reveals valuable lessons from their experiences—positive actions to emulate and mistakes to avoid. Despite their flaws, these families needed redemption, much like ours today. This underscores the importance of a redeemer in strengthening our family units.Buckner International's MissionBuckner International is grounded in the biblical directive from James 1:27, which emphasizes caring for orphans and widows. Their ministry focuses on two main areas: senior living and services for children and families. The Children and Families division provides foster care and adoption, support for single-parent families, and Family Hope Centers to aid struggling families. Additionally, they've distributed over 5 million pairs of shoes to children in more than 85 countries since 1994.Shoes for Orphan SoulsOne of Buckner's notable projects is "Shoes for Orphan Souls." This initiative collects new shoes for children, which volunteers sort, prepare, and ship. These shoes are crucial in allowing children to run, play, attend school, and stay healthy. Volunteers also include personal notes of encouragement, sharing the love of Christ with each child who receives a pair.Get InvolvedFor just $15, you can provide a pair of shoes to a child in need anywhere in the world. To contribute, visit GiveShoesToday.org.On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:I've got four credit cards and about $6,500 in debt, and I want to get rid of that debt. Should I go through the Trinity finance program, consolidate that, save some of those penalties and things, and get that paid off? Or is it better for my credit to go ahead and do the best I can to make the payments? Is that the best for my future?I have a second home, and my parents live in it. I've been thinking about selling it, but my parents are hesitant because they want to stay there until they pass. They're up there in age, but I just want to get rid of the house. I don't want to put my parents in a nursing home or anything, so what can I do? What are my options?I'm only 63, but I applied for disability. I'm about to have my fourth back surgery. So they asked me if I wanted to go ahead and receive social security while I was waiting for disability to be approved. So, I am receiving that $1,700 a month. Now, there is a cap on how much income, and I'm trying to continue to work to supplement that. But I have a cap of $1,400. That's still not enough to live on, so I live in my car now. But once I receive my disability, and that's approved, will there still be a cap on how much additional supplemental income I can earn?Resources Mentioned:Never Alone: The Power of Family to Inspire Hope by Dr. Albert ReyesBuckner Shoes for Orphan Souls (GiveShoesToday.com)Give To FaithFiRich Toward God: A Study on the Parable of the Rich FoolFind a Certified Kingdom Advisor (CKA) or Certified Christian Financial Counselor (CertCFC)FaithFi App Remember, you can call in to ask your questions most days at (800) 525-7000. What does Buckner Shoes for Orphan Souls do? They are Buckner International's largest humanitarian aid project. Their mission is to follow Jesus' example by serving vulnerable children, families, and seniors. One way they do that is through partnerships like Buckner Shoes for Orphan Souls, where they come alongside believers in churches, businesses, and families throughout the U.S. to provide new shoes for children worldwide. Why are shoes important for health, education, and opportunity, especially in underdeveloped countries?Children can't go to school without shoes in many countries where they work, so Buckner promotes education by providing that gift. Additionally, wearing shoes makes many foot-borne illnesses in some communities entirely preventable. Many of the shoes they distribute also allow Buckner ministries to meet and come alongside children and families in their community, providing redemptive ministry for them. How do shoes pave the way for sharing the Gospel?Every pair of shoes is an opportunity to directly connect with the child and let them know they're loved, cared for, and not forgotten by us or God. Additionally, every pair of shoes will have an encouraging note to them, often expressing the love of Christ for them.Every pair of shoes is often the start of a relationship between the recipient and Buckner ministries where Christ-centered redemptive ministry is being done. How can people get involved with Buckner Shoes for Orphan Souls?GiveShoesToday.orgEvery $15 will provide a pair of shoes for a child worldwide, giving them further opportunities in education, healthcare, and, most importantly, the hope of the Gospel. On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:My wife and I want to purchase our first home in about a year. We are a single-income family: I work, and she stays and homeschools our four children. Would it be a good idea to have her listed on the mortgage when it's time to get our mortgage? Or would it be better to keep her off? I don't want her to be responsible for something happening to me. I would like your opinion on that.I had a couple of garage sales on our block this weekend. Both neighbors are selling their homes and my daughter and her husband love my neighbor's home. They got married in June last year when they got their condo. They want to buy this cute, humble home, jump from the condo, and maybe get this first home, but both are fortunate to be college-educated and are doing okay. One was late on several car payments so their credit score wouldn't be too good. Unfortunately, they need a cosigner so they asked me if I would be willing to do that. What do you think about this and more importantly, what does the Bible say about this?I have a 457 retirement plan, and my beneficiary is my wife. If something should happen to me, she would get the money, but I was wondering since she doesn't have any retirement income set up, if she would be able to roll it over so she could make it her retirement savings so that she wouldn't get hit so hard on the taxes?I contacted a Christian credit counselor because I have about $9,000-$10,000 in credit card debt. They were able to break it down so that I could afford the payments, but I'm curious how that will look in the eyes of a lender for future financing. I am looking to purchase a home within the next year, which may negatively impact how a lender views me. My husband passed away over 10 years ago and I was left with about $150,000 from the inheritance. I put about $40,000 into a CD five years ago, and the five years are almost up. I have about $100,000 sitting in a savings account making zero interest because it's in a savings account and I wanted to know what you can advise me on it. I'm 65 years old, so I don't want to do anything with a high risk, but it's just sitting there and not making anything.Resources Mentioned:GiveShoesToday.orgBankrate.comRich Toward God: A Study on the Parable of the Rich FoolFind a Certified Kingdom Advisor (CKA)FaithFi App Remember, you can call in to ask your questions most days at (800) 525-7000. Dr. Albert Reyes and Dr. Mark Turman discuss how the gospel and meeting physical needs are two sides of the same coin of advancing God's kingdom, how Buckner lives this out from “womb to tomb,” the importance of family, and how to get involved. Show notes: Dr. Albert Reyes and Dr. Mark Turman discuss the unfortunate conflict between two supposed teams: Christians who help people with physical needs and Christians who help with spiritual needs (3:22). Actually, Jesus did both in an integrated way, they are two sides of the same coin (7:16). They talk about the importance of healing, peace, and justice, along with the importance of words (12:13). They discuss the history of Buckner International and the life of Robert Cooke Buckner, the baptist minister who lived out this idea in his life and founded the ministry as an orphanage (19:12). Dr. Reyes then talks about their senior living ministry, and why it's so important in our culture (28:40). Their ministry spans from “womb to tomb,” helping children through fostering, adopting, and orphanages (34:49). Then, they talk about the importance of family and how their ministry supports all kinds of families (38:42). Millennial Christians have learned the importance of adoption, it's a beautiful return to the roots of Christianity (49:56). They end by talking about how our audience can get involved, and their slow, deliberate process of taking families through the decision to foster and adopt (50:52). Research shows that multi-channel donors can be worth more than donors who give only online or only offline. But do nonprofits treat multi-channel donors like they're worth two or three times more to their organization? A recent experiment looked at how nonprofits respond after a gift and the results could surprise you. Gabe Cooper, CEO of Phoenix-based Virtuous Software joins the program to talk about the study they embarked on with NextAfter Institute, titled, The State of Multichannel Donor Communications: How 119 Organizations Are Using Online and Offline Channels to Engage New Donors. The report examines how charities responded to donations that were made both online and offline. Donations of $20 were made to 119 organizations in the spring of 2020. Communications were then tracked across email, direct mail, telephone and text messaging for four months, culminating with the final 57-page report. "We seem to know intuitively that communicating with people on multiple channels works," Cooper said. "The data over and over again in these studies suggests that communicating on multiple channels gets far higher engagement from donors and so the fact that we are not really mailing all our online donors or vice versa...that is a little bit shocking because it seems to be a pretty big disconnect from how we know donors behave," he said. "Only 3% of the organizations we gave to were actually doing multi-channel well, meaning, somebody came in on one channel, and then they started engaging with them on both in a meaningful way or even more channels," Cooper said. "So, that was the big shocker for me was even though multichannel gives are worth 300% more LTV [lifetime value] than a typical single-channel donor, there's just very few nonprofits that are doing this after a first gift." There were some other surprising findings -- both good and bad -- and several organizations were cited for being stellar with their communications, with Cooper in particular noting Buckner International and Doctors Without Borders. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/nonprofittimes/message

Join Kevin as he talks with Dr. Albert Reyes, President & CEO of Buckner International about God's kingdom here on earth. The ideas of hope, peace, and justice are available for us right now. This month on the Polished Podcast, we’re celebrating Latina Heritage Month by amplifying the voices of Latinas making their mark in the workplace and a special introduction from the ladies of Brunch Con Salsa podcast. Latinas belong to the largest minority group in the U.S. and have significant buying power in the economy, yet negative stereotypes diminish their identities as image-bearers of God and contributors at work. Christ's work on the cross calls for all of us, Latinas included, to see each other through his eyes. Today’s episode features Polished Regional Director and Senior Director of International Operations and Strategic Initiatives at Buckner International, Rocio Lopez. Rocio’s candid discussion with our host, Kat Armstrong, about her experience working as a Latina in America and her faith’s crucial role in finding her purpose and voice in the workplace will both challenge and encourage you today. Buckner International is an international organization focused on offering ministry-based services to vulnerable children in six different countries, including the United States.
