We're always excited for a new Eric Lang game, which makes him an obvious candidate for the absolutely-not-called BGB DOG - our series where we deep dive into a designer's .... designography. He's made a lot of our favourite area control games, and had his hand in some games we might not have even realized. Erica and Scott welcome game design legend Mike Elliot, creator of innumerable Magic: the Gathering and Pokémon cards, designer of Thunderstone, and co-designer of Quarriors and the Dice Masters series. And of course, of DuelMaster and Charm Angel, which were both huge hits in Japan. Mike also runs the Academy of Adventure Gaming Arts & Design Hall of Fame, commemorating the work of legendary tabletop game designers. SHOW NOTES 1m22s: NeoPets, Hecatomb, The Harry Potter Trading Card Game. 1m41s: Game designer and friend of the show Eric Lang. Gil and Geoff chatted with Eric in Ludology 175 - Auld Lang Design. , Also, Wiz Kids is a publisher that should not be confused with Hasbro-owned D&D and Magic: the Gathering publisher Wizards of the Coast (aka WOTC, often referred to as "WHAT-see"). Wiz Kids and WOTC are two unrelated companies, although Wiz Kids publishes some D&D-related products under license from WOTC. 3m24s: Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson are the credited designers behind the first version of D&D. Richard Garfield designed Magic: The Gathering, King of Tokyo, and Robo Rally. Jordan Weisman founded legendary RPG publisher FASA before starting WizKids. Reiner Knizia has designed hundreds of games, including Tigris & Euphrates, Medici, Ra, and Lost Cities. Vlaada Chvatl designed Through the Ages and Galaxy Trucker. 3m58s: Uwe Rosenberg designed Agricola, Le Havre, A Feast for Odin, and Bohnanza. Bruno Cathala designed 5 Tribes, Kingdomino, and 7 Wonders Duel. Maureen Hiron has been in the industry for decades, with games like 7 Ate 9, Cosmic Cows, and Qwitch. 4m31s: The Strong Museum of Play, in Rochester, New York, is a museum dedicated to play, toys, and games. If you're ever in Rochester, make an appointment with their archivist to look at Sid Sackson's meticulously-kept diaries; they are amazing. GAMA is the Game Manufacturer's Association, a trade organization of tabletop game publishers and retailers. GAMA runs the industry convention GAMA Expo (formerly the GAMA Trade Show), and the public convention Origins. 5m26s: Little Wars, by novelist H.G. Wells (author of War of the Worlds, The Time Machine, and The Island of Doctor Moreau), was a rulebook for playing with toy soldiers. That sort of formalized ruleset for a wargame was rather novel in 1913. Note the cringeworthy full title: Little Wars: a game for boys from twelve years of age to one hundred and fifty and for that more intelligent sort of girl who likes boys' games and books. 7m39s: Here's the website Mike mentions. Note that Mike is in the middle of the photograph on the front page, in the black short-sleeved shirt. 8m31s: Here's the Biography of a Board Game for Pass-out. 9m43s: And here's the Biography of a Board Game for Quarriors. 10m22s: Del Mar, California. 15m44s: Hearthstone 21m34s: If you want to know more about the intersection of gaming and improv, check out our episode of Improv for Gamers author Karen Twelves, Ludology 237 - Improv-ing Games. 28m22s: Halo ActionClix, Star Wars PocketModel TCG, DC HeroClix: Batman (Alpha) 34m00s: The Dice Masters family of games. 35m04s: Duel Masters Trading Card Game, from WOTC and Takara Tomy (both of which are part of Hasbro), part of the Duel Masters franchise. 38m44s: Battle Spirits: Trading Card Game 45m27s: More information about Target halting sales of trading cards, including Pokémon. 46m01s: Thunderstone, published by Alderac Entertainment Group. Alderac is usually abbreviated as AEG, but is unrelated to the massive sports/music promoter Anschutz Entertainment Group, which is also abbreviated as AEG. Alderac is run by John Zinzer. 47m25s: Kingdom of Loathing 50m45s: Card Jitsu was originally part of Disney's MMO Club Penguin, which has since been replaced by Club Penguin Island. 54m08s: Quarriors 58m25s: Yahtzee: Doctor Who edition, and its TARDIS dice cup. 1h00m26s: The Quacks of Quedlinburg, The Mind 1h05m17s: AR games, or Augmented Reality games, utilize technology like phones or tablets to augment real-world locations with computer-generated enhancements. The most successful AR game at the moment is Pokémon Go. 1h07m53s: Mark Rosewater is the head designer for Magic: The Gathering. 1h15m15s: The film American Pie.

With all that's changed (including Emma having designed a deckbuilder), what has changed, and what have we learned? 0m41s: The episode that Ryan and Geoff did was Ludology 119 - Deck the Halls. 0m46s: Dominion (which did come out in 2008) 2m39s: StarCraft: The Board Game, which is generally believed to be the first game with an in-game deckbuilding component (if we assume that Magic: The Gathering's deckbuilding component is technically not "in-game," but is part of the metagame). 5m12s: Trains, and A Few Acres of Snow 6m26s: Smash Up 14m45s: Concordia, Aquatica 17m13s: Ascension, Thunderstone, Nightfall 22m26s: Eschaton, Copycat 30m08s: Aeon's End, Thunderstone Quest, Big Book of Madness, Harry Potter: Hogwarts Battle 31m39s: Puzzle Strike 32m36s: The Quacks of Quedlinburg 33m19s: I think we have the name to Scott's next game... :) 34m03s: Black Friday 34m47s: Quarriors (and its themed re-implementation, Dice Masters) 36m58s: Rattlebones 37m40s: Dice Forge (which Gil mistakenly called Dice Vault) 38m25s: According to designer Stephen Glenn, Rattlebones had been in the works since 2009. 40m05s: Blank White Dice (which Emma called Blank Dice) 41m07s: Abandon All Artichokes, Xenon Profiteer, Fine Sand 44m18s: Mystic Vale, Edge of Darkness 46m21s: The game Scott was thinking of is Dead Reckoning 46m36s: Slay the Spire 48m09s: Gil is using the definition of "atom" from the book Characteristics of Games: "The smallest complete unit of play, in the sense that the players feel they've 'really played' some of the game." 49m51s: The bits in question 50m05s: VENOM Assault 51m27s: Monster Train 54m17s: Self-promotion time! Gil High Rise The Rival Networks (Gil was totally wrong, but the rulebook is with the graphic designer now, so it's close to done!) Starting with the history and spilling over onto modern design, we discuss the ways that little plastic geometric shapes are used in the design and play of games, and some stand out examples of clever dice usage. After the break we stick with the dice theme and discuss King of Tokyo and King of New York - two games that take the dice-rolling set-collection aspect of Yahtzee and turn it into a slug fest between monsters battling for control of their city. Finally Adam learns how to play cards with a Shopkins game, Ryan rolls some fancy custom dice in Quarriors, and Chad attempts to figure out what his coworkers are getting at in a game of Decrypto. Episode 118: A Quarriors Qretrospective Length: 1:02:54 Show Links: RSS | iTunes | Stitcher | Download Episode Welcome back to Vox Republica, the Cardboard Republic Podcast! We post new episodes every other Thursday, with each episode being about 45 minutes long. Vox Republica is proudly supported by our Patreon. Consider contributing today! DESCRIPTION: Fresh off attending a new local game convention, Erin and Ryan talk about the excitement that surrounds the foundation of a new con. Then, after talking about a few of the many games played lately, they move from the present to the past by doing a retrospective review on the innovative dice drafting game Quarriors. Is it still good now? Was it good then? Let's find out! GUEST: None RECENTLY PLAYED GAMES - (01:15): Scoville Labs by Tasty Minstrel Games Dr. Eureka by Blue Orange Games Powerpuff Girls: Saving The World Before Bedtime by Hasbro Lords of Waterdeep by Wizards of the Coast Anachrony by Mindclash Games QUICK TOPICS - (20:27): We attended the inaugural launch of the first Granite Game Summit, a new New England-based gaming convention! REVIEW - (27:13): Quarriors is a 2011 release from WizKids for 2-4 players that focuses on the idea of 'dice drafting'. Set in a fantasy world, you play as warriors who must ready spells and summon creatures to fight for you on the field of battle. You do this Each turn by drawing six dice from your bag and rolling them. From there you spend your rolled resources assigning on assigning monsters and buying new recruits. It’s essentially a deck-building game in dice form, so you spend a lot of the game attempting to get more dice to improve your rolls. Innovative when it first came out, we take a look back and see if it holds up today - and whether it ever did in the first place. (Note: if you don't see pictures below, you can view them via the RSS feed or clicking this link.) All the Quarriors snugged in tightly A Quarrior Qreature Qard A typical Quarriors setup This player can spend 3 of their 4 Quiddity to ready both of their monster dice The player only has enough resources to either summon their Wizard or buy a new Ghost Having survived the round, this Goblin scores 2 Glory (VP) The Quarriors Qlan family photo PLUGS - (1:02:07): We previewed Anachrony, the time-traveling worker placement game, currently on Kickstarter We reviewed Apotheca, the light set-matching tile game. As always, Cardboard Republic YouTube videos and the BGG Guild are still ongoing. Subscribe to either - or both if you really love us. You do really love us, right? We’d love to hear from you! Episode 32 finds The Last Cast discussing Marvel. A lot. Marvel Comics, Marvel Movies, Marvel TV Shows. The Marvel Dice Masters game. The tile of the podcast is Marvel related. Even our game this week is Marvel themed. Marvel. The Last Cast tells of our Fan Expo experiences. We didn't get a chance to put together a booth to visit with all you Last Cast fans out there, but we saw a bunch of Casters around the convention. Hope you had fun guys. We touch on some video games (of course): The Last of Us Remastered for PlayStation 4. Zelda - A Link to the Past for 3DS. Then, Richie has his pants scared off with Silent Hill PT. We touch on some board games (of course): Quarriors, and Marvel Dice Masters. Plus, are we really talking about Magic: The Gathering? It's over 20 years old now as a game, but Richie is just discovering it. Meanwhile, Christopher has been playing Star Wars: The Card Game - Living Card Game (by Fantasy Flight Games) and collecting Star Wars X-Wing miniatures (which is awesome!). In comic news: Christopher reads The Star Wars (yes, THE Star Wars); and Tim tells us about the latest Marvel Summer Event - Original Sin. How about TV Superheroes: Who is doing it better? Marvel or D.C.? Do we need a Daredevil show? Movie Superheroes? Does Black Widow need her own movie? Maybe Black Panther? Another Dead Pool? Speaking of movies, we've seen some really big flops this summer. We discuss some reasons why big movies are doing small box-office these days. Play along with our "How much we don't know about Marvel" game. Turns out, we don't know as much as we thought we did. In this episode of The Long View, I'm pleased to be joined by Jason Obermeyer as we discuss the 4x space game of Eclipse. Is this the game that truly replaces Twilight Imperium (Third Edition)? Does it deliver a thematic punch, or is it just eurofied? How do the expansions add to the game? Find out the answers to these questions and more in this episode of The Long View. As a bonus, Jason and I review the new hotness Marvel Dice Masters: Avengers vs. X-Men. Is it Quarriors! 2.0, or just more of the same? How does the theme hold up, and what does the future hold for this new collectible dice game. The review can be found at the 1:11:00 mark of the episode. Finally, I review Cuba: The Splendid Little War from Victory Point Games. Is it a perfect entry level wargame? Does it accurately reflect the period? Is it fun? Find out the answer to these questions and more in the review! It can be found at the 1:33:30 mark of the episode. Thanks to my sponsor, www.gamesurplus.com for their continued support, and thanks, as always, to YOU for listening!

For our seventeenth episode, we talk to Mike Elliott, designer of Lost Legends, Quarriors, Thunderstone, and more!
It is quite interesting to see how some people’s names get into the minds of the public and some others don’t. This is even more interesting when we consider that the products from the non-remembered people are really popular and of undeniable quality. This is the case with the guest being interviewed in the podcast for this episode, Mike Elliott. His portfolio of games is impressive to say the least. He’s worked on Magic: The Gathering and Pokemon TCG amongst others, and created Star Trek Fleet Captains, Thunderstone, Quarriors and more. You’d expect with those games under his belt, it would be easy for him to get publishers to agree to get his games out in no time. Things are not as simple, though! In his latest game, Sangoku, he’s teamed up with Game Salute to bring his latest creation, Sangoku, into production. Sangoku is a game of epic battle with roots in a game with thousand of years history with a seriously lovely looking oriental theme and artwork. As usual, your feedback is most appreciated, so please do feel free to email us on podcast@gmsmagazine.com and let us know what you think! Look forward to hearing from you and hope you enjoy the show!
For our fifth episode, we talk to Eric Lang, designer of Chaos in the Old World and Quarriors
Sean and Ronan again discuss some games they have played recently. This week they cover Dungeon Run, Moai, Quarriors, Power Grid, Upon a Salty Ocean and Carson City. For the second year in a row we’ve made our business to travel to Essen and interview some of the most interesting and innovative games and game designers. And also the most passionate people about boardgames and the boardgames industry. The interviews you’ll hear are from the DVD, but without images. The DVDs with all the interviews will be available very soon. As soon as all the IndieGoGo campaign backers get their copies, it’ll be available to purchase to everyone else. And worry not, we’ll let all know! Meanwhile, the interviews in this episode: Seth Hyatt from Mayday games: Board Game Accessories are what we at Mayday Games eat, sleep & dream about. Our specialty board game pieces, custom card sleeves, and (willingness to listen to your wants) are the things that really set Mayday Games apart from every other board game company in the industry. Now You Can Have The Board Game Accessories You Want! Alexander Gyulai from Innovative Games Creations: Innovative Games Creation represents the realization of innovative ideas in the areas of corporate and electronic games. Special emphasis is placed on the personal touch of its products and the artist is inspired by spirit of the game at all until awakened to life. Fun and creativity are not only enshrined in the company's philosophy, but lived by the IGC active employees. Henri Kermareec– Sit Down Games: Wiraqocha Valley is represented by an adjustable board consisting of 22 hexagonal tiles, each of them being identified by a number from 1 to 12, or a dice combo (pairs or straights). In his turn, each player rolls some six-sided dice, combining them to take possession of territories, or to protect from the opponents the ones he already owns. Every hexagon affords resources or special capacities, which are means to influence die results to fit one’s strategy. There are three ways to win: bring back a huge cargo of Somnium to the Empress; acquire enough scientific knowledge to build the Leviathan, a terrifying weapon serving the Kingdom; or find in the temple depths the four relics that will allow you to reach Wiraqocha’s treasure. Mike Elliot: Seattle based Game Designer. Mostly known for the Japanese trading card games Battle Spirits and Duel Masters. Past credits include many other TCGs, Quarriors, Thunderstone, Earthquake, and dozens of expansion credits for Magic and various other TCGs. Smiling Monster Games
