Happy middle, middle of December. You're listening to the Repco Lite Home Improvement Show sponsored by Benjamin Morin. Yeah, middle of December. Seriously, how in the world do we slow this down? We need to get together and figure that out. I'd like to pump the brakes here a little bit.Are you feeling that too? Or is it just me, you know, for me, there aren't enough hours in the day. I've got parties to plan errands to run gifts to buy so many gifts to buy and really honestly, I'm absolutely stinking at gifts this year. Stinking and it's stressing me out. Normally, normally by now I've completed all of my shopping and I've completed it brilliantly in most situations. You know, we're being honest here, no false humility, pretty brilliant when it comes to gifts. This year, this year I'm stinking. Unless I come up with some kind of inspiration, unless that strikes really, really soon, we're heading for one of those Christmases, right? I certainly wouldn't want to be my kids this year, at least not yet.Anyway, I hope you're all doing a ton better than I am. Hope you're more on top of things. Hope you're feeling really festive, really ready for what's coming and just feeling really accomplished. But just in case you're feeling a little bit of anxiety, like I am, I've got some help for you today. Uh, later, I'm going to be talking with Jeff Rietveld from Out of the Box Games in Holland and Zealand, and we're going to talk about some great games for Christmas gifts or gifts.Or family parties. So if the gift giving stress is getting to you, stick around for that. All right. That, that will help. We're also going to be diving into space heater safety, and I know that doesn't sound the most exciting, right? It doesn't sound terribly exciting, but trust me, those little heaters, They can be lifesavers in the winter, but only if you use them right.Otherwise, well, if you don't, they can, they can really cause some trouble. So we'll talk about that. And I've also got some strategies for painting in tight spaces. I am super pumped about this, this topic. I love it. It's a lot of fun. It's pretty funny. Uh, and that's coming up next. Uh, but right now let's get to the paint point for the week. And to do that, I want to circle back to the whole holiday stress thing. thing. Like I said, I've been feeling it. Maybe you've been feeling it, but here's the difference. You know, here's, here's me realizing, uh, this is me growing up a little bit. It's me realizing that I'm not the only one in the universe here.Um, the only...

Insanely talented artist and creator, Tyler Miles Lockett joins the show to talk about some upcoming projects. Tyler is creating the art for Renier Knizia's Ichor, Lockett Studio (a really exciting project that we chat about for a bit!), and his HUGE upcoming book, Lockett Studio: Greek Gods and Heroes. Through a long time of traveling and creating, Tyler is looking to bring forth stories from throughout history and the world.Check out Tyler's work through this Linktree.Additionally, be on the lookout for Bitewing game's upcoming Kickstarter that has Ichor as one of two Knizia games specifically designed for two and put in a Greek Mythology setting. In the interview, Tyler asks for some “casual game” recommendations. At the end, I said I'd send them over and put them in the show notes. So you'll be privy to all of the words that I shared (some behind the scenes stuff here so as to not be left out. Due to that, I'll just title the sections and timestamp them instead of going into depth for each.Convergence of Art and Mythology (0:00)Digital Nomad (26:34)Lockett Studio (41:56)Wrap-up Questions [Text on Mind & Things to Look out for from Tyler] (1:02:14)GAME RECOMMENDATIONSSantorini (2) - You mentioned Chess, and this one is an “abstract” like that, but much simpler. It's really dynamic and has fun physicality. It's typically quite quick; it's my most played game of all time (has the slightest “Greek Mythology” setting to it with the special powers, but I hardly use those anyway).Prey Another Day (4-5) - This one feels as social of a card game as it gets. It's kind of like “double think” the game. Your group will make up metas and counter-metas and just be vocal through the whole experience.Ra (2-5 [two seems polarizing though]) - On the higher end of the casual spectrum, but I don't think it's too challenging to learn and teach. Designed by Reiner Knizia himself, so the game does a lot with its minimal ruleset.DroPolter (2-5) - New to my collection, but I think this one will always be with me in a game bag. It's a dexterity game where you try to drop certain pieces from your hand. If you win a round, you gain a bell as a victory point. That bell gets added to your hand, and you do not want to drop it. This game is great.Sprawlopolis (1-2) - I've only played this one solo, but it's a puzzly game using just eighteen cards. For me, it's one of several Buttonshy Games that I'll bust out if I need a quick break to play a game but do not have much time.Just One (4-7+ [the plus would need some extra white boards or paper could work too) and So Clover! (2-6) - I've had Just One longer but have technically played So Clover! more. You can't really go wrong with either, but I do think that Just One needs more people in order to make it a better experience. They're both just really social word-party games.-----vodthepod@gmail.comTwitterInstagramBuy Me a Coffee

February 1, 2022 Let me see about keeping this going. It's been a long while since I had anything approaching a regular posting schedule. No promises, but for my own sake I'd like to (re)start boardgaming and podcasting a little more often... Opener: Five Games For Doomsday podcast As I explained in the previous episode, I'm not yet living in a post-pandemic world. None of us are. Things have not gone back to normal. Not even "the new normal." At least, I hope not--I hope things can get a bit better, more stable, and more social than they are for me at the moment. My boardgaming hobby is therefore in a hybrid state. Sort of like how we talk about "hybrid meetings" at my work where some people are in the office, but most are at home on their screens--my boardgaming is a mix. Much of it is still with friends (and some random people) on sites like BoardgameArena, Yucata.de, and Brettspielwelt. Other times just two or three of us manage to meet in-person for a real game night over a table, with drinks & snacks. I want the latter to take over my hobby again, but we aren't quite there yet. Consequently, the games I discuss are a blend of ones played with friends across a table, and others played with friends on a screen. As always, I have thoughts, opinions, and questions about the games regardless of the medium. My main thoughts are about The Adventures of Robin Hood, the Spiel des Jahres nominee from last year (in the podcast I mistakenly say Kennerspiel nominee). The story of Robin Hood is ok, I suppose, but what impresses me is the physical gameplay design of this one. I'm sure there are many great examples of this concept, but I struggled to find a good description or list anywhere. I don't just mean the bits, and I definitely don't mean sculpted miniatures (thankfully, this game doesn't have those). No, I mean gameplay that relates to the physical act of manipulating the boardgame as an object. Dexterity games do this, but they're in a different category. I mean strategy games that do this. I'd love to find more examples. Images by Tobias Franke & Henk Rolleman Surprising to me, thoughts about this game leaked over into thoughts about solo boardgaming in general--why I don't like it, even though I love solo wargaming. Next I play pop psychologist on myself to connect this feeling about solo boardgames to my waning interest in fiction...if I'm consuming it alone. Nonfiction is my solo experience, while I want to enjoy fictional stories/shows/games with friends & family. Other games discussed are Isle of Cats, Bosk, So Clover!, and LaCorsa. I was originally going to riff on Ginsberg's Howl, but I confess I had completely forgotten what a monster of a piece it is--redolent in imagery and references that are very much of a time since past. I considered then moving on to Nelson's On the Road Again, and faced the opposite problem--man, that song has some simple lyrics. I guess Shelley and Shakespeare are the sweet spot. 01:24 AYURIS: Praga Caput Regni (Vladimír Suchý, Delicious Games, 2020)Games Played Last Week:03:56 -Shadowrift (Jeremy Anderson, Game Salute, 2012)06:41 -Jetpack Joyride: Deluxe Edition (Michał Gołębiowski, Lucky Duck Games, 2019)10:18 -Barcelona (Dani Garcia, Board&Dice, 2023)14:22 -Regicide (Paul Abrahams, Luke Badger, & Andy Richdale, Badgers from Mars, 2020)17:17 -Project: ELITE (Konstantinos Kokkinis, Sotirios Tsantilas, Artipia Games, 2016)20:33 -Ready Set Bet (John D. It is a truth universally acknowledged in eurogames that every famous historical man (it's almost always a man, of course) had a retinue of about 2-5 hangers-on whose sole job was to impress him. They did this mostly by doing stuff he did; maybe after he did them, maybe running states he conquered, maybe even by doing the stuff he was credited with. Their names are lost to antiquity. All we know is that they liked solid colours, and that the famous dude was most impressed with one of them. Games Played Last Week:00:54 -Lacrimosa (Gerard Ascendi and Ferran Renalias, Devir, 2022)06:30 -Tapple (Uncredited, The Op Games, 2021)07:48 -Forests of Pangaia (Thomas Franken, Pangaia Games, 2022)09:48 -Wizards of the Grimoire (Cole Banning and Joe Banning, Grimoire Games, 2022)12:46 -Sentinels of the Multiverse (Christopher Badell, Paul Bender, & Adam Rebottaro, Greater Than Games, 2011)16:51 -So Clover! So Very Wrong About Games

Is there a difference between a fruit salad and a fruit cup? I mean, the first question is whether a fruit cup contains a fruit salad, or if the contents are some other substance; then one can query whether the cup and its contents are a gestalt whole. Let us not forget the prospect of a fruit cup of Theseus, whereby each fruit piece is removed and replaced with an equivalent fruit (I would ask what an equivalent fruit is, but that's getting sidetracked)--is it the same fruit cup? Heraclitus would say you can't take a bite of the same fruit salad twice. There's the somewhat absurd possibility of a fruit cup of Damocles--presumably the fruits therein would have been prepared by Procrustes. What I'm getting at is melon is gross.Games Played Last Week:00:53 -Just One (Ludovic Roudy & Bruno Sautter, Repos Production, 2018)01:04 -So Clover!
