Cards Against Humanity Welcome to The Guys Review, where we review media, products and experiences. **READ APPLE REVIEWS/Fan Mail**Mention Twitter DM group - like pinned tweet @The_GuysReviewRead emails theguysreviewpod@gmail.comTwitter Poll Cards Against Humanity: Cards Against Humanity is an adult party game in which players complete fill-in-the-blank statements using words or phrases typically deemed offensive, risqué or politically incorrect printed on playing cards. It has been compared to the 1999 card game apples to apples and originated from a Kickstarter campaign in 2011. Its title refers to the phrase "crimes against humanity", reflecting its politacally incorrect content. Cards Against Humanity was created by a group of eight Highland park high school alumni. Heavily influenced by the popular Apples to Apples card game, it was initially named Cardenfreude (a pun on schadenfraude) and involved a group of players writing out the most abstract and, often, humorous response to the topic question. The name was later changed to Cards Against Humanity, with the answers pre-written on the white cards known today. Co-creator Ben Hantoot cited experiences with various games such as Magic:The gathering, Balderdash, and Charades as inspiration, also noting that Mad Libs was "the most direct influence" for the game. The game was financed with a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign and influenced by a previous crowd-funded campaign for a book on the design of then-President of the United States of America Barack Obama's Campaign. The campaign started on December 1, 2010; it met its goal of $4,000 in two weeks. The campaign ended on January 30, 2011, and raised over $15,000; just under 400% of its original goal. With this additional money raised towards the game, the creators added fifty more cards to the game itself. An exerpt from BloombergsCards against humanity LLC, the maker of the eponymous and tasteless-by-design party game, is exploring a potential sale, according to people familiar with the matter. The Chicago-based company is working with an adviser, Moelis & Co., after it received takeover interest, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the information was private. The company is seeking to be valued at around $500 million in a transaction, the people added. The company generates earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization, of between $40 million to $50 million a year.Cards Against Humanity hasn't made a final decision on pursuing a sale and could decide to remain independent, the people said.Representatives for the company and Moelis declined to comment. One of its co-founders, Max Temkin, stepped down in June 2020 after reports of a toxic work environment, according to a statement on its website. Temkin no longer participates in the business but is still one of the owners of the company, which is run and controlled by its co-founders, a person familiar with the matter said. The company said at the time it would hire a specialist to improve human resources, hiring and management practices at the company. 1. Cards Against Humanity started as a game made of construction paper. In 2009, Max Temkin, Josh Dillon, Daniel Dranove, Eli Halpern, Ben Hantoot, David Munk, David Pinsof, and Eliot Weinstein—a group of friends, most of whom had attended high school together—got together over their winter break and decided to design a game that could entertain guests during their annual New Year's Eve parties. While they thought of a variety of games, only one of them—which they called Cardenfreude, after schadenfreude, the German word for delighting in another's misfortuneThe team successfully sold bull dung to consumers. For a 2014 Black Friday promotional stunt, the Cards Against Humanity company promised to send consumers a box of “bullsh*t.” The company sold and shipped boxes containing a solid piece of real bull dung that was procured from a cattle ranch in Texas. All 30,000 pieces, which were priced at $6 each, sold out within a half-hour the day they went on sale.According to Temkin, the fecal matter was intended to be a commentary on the sensationalist nature of the hype surrounding Black Friday sales. They've made a tradition of attention-grabbing projects each holiday season. In 2015, they held a “promotion” in which people could send them $5 and get nothing in return. (They collected $71,145 and split it among their employees.) In 2016, the company dug a purposely pointless “holiday hole” in an undisclosed area using funds donated by customers. In 2018, the company held a 99-percent-off sale which featured bizarre items at a steep discount like a cheese wheel and an actual car for $97.50. The items were purportedly all real and delivered to purchasers. The company opened a pop-up store. In 2017, the team behind Cards Against Humanityopened a pop-up store in Chicago in collaboration with the Chicago Design Museum. Located in Block 37's Chicago Design Market, the storefront sold a variety of games and other Cards Against Humanity-related merchandise, as well as work from local artists. The store was temporary, but the company still sells products via retail outlets like Target and Walmart. The staff contemplated destroying an original Picasso. In December 2015, the staff of Cards Against HumanityacquiredTête de Faune, an original work by Pablo Picasso. Though it was never conclusively determined how they had come to acquire it, it was likely from a Chicago-area art dealer. The team ran an online poll to decide whether it should be donated to the Art Institute of Chicago or sliced into 150,000 pieces and distributed to consumers. Of the 50,000 people who voted, 71.3 percent opted to keep it intact. One of the Cards Against Humanity expansion packs in 2015 was science themed and the profits were intended to create a scholarship for women going into science fields. So far over $500,000 have been raised. https://youtu.be/tiY3tLnVud0 In this episode, let's talk about the power of a well-timed stunt to gain attention, rise above the noise, and drive revenue. This is how we get our creative juices flowing. Do something that is maybe a little provocative, maybe a little risque. It should be designed to get a lot of attention, and maybe even drive some PR. Black Friday Sale, Not! Christopher shares about different brands and their provocative stunts. Max Temkin, founder of the Cards Against Humanity appeared on Follow Your Different Episode 60. Max and his team probably are the masters in terms of marketing stunts when they jacked up their prices, on Black Friday Sale. “As a way of sort of doing the opposite of what every B2C company and brand does — and as a way of sort of calling bs on consumerism — they increased the price of Cards Against Humanity on Black Friday, and got a ton of PR for it. People thought it was hysterical. They paid the price. They stood out.” - Christopher Lochhead Sponsoring The Golden Gate Bridge CarsDirect.Com also pulled off one legendary stunt when they sent out press releases about their proposal to sponsor the Golden Gate Bridge. This press release stirred up a lot of controversies and reaction from the media, but they still ended up getting a lot of publicity for it. “Now notice, they put forward a proposal, it wasn't actually happening. By putting that press release out, they caused a tremendous amount of controversy.” - Christopher Lochhead Aliens Will Eat Fat People First Another marketing stunt that got into a lot of controversies is the Ad of 24 Hour Fitness featuring an alien and caption that says, “when they come, they'll eat the fat ones first.” “Their CEO is interviewed on the news. And he was talking about how they're just trying to have fun and shine a light on obesity and that people need to get fit and healthy and the like. And a lot of people were upset and there was all this kerfuffle again, but what were they talking about? 24 Hour Fitness.” - Christopher Lochhead Christopher encourages companies to be provocative, be thoughtful be potentially willing to piss some people off (depending on your brand). Max Temkin is not your average human. He formerly advised on the Obama for America campaign, worked with the Electronic Frontier Foundation, and is also the creator of the much-loved game Cards Against Humanity. Max and his team’s approach to creativity is rather simple. They think of weird ideas until something makes them laugh. Beyond that, it’s exploring which of those new ideas, might not work. They talk it out until something sticks. A rather novel approach to business on the whole, one could argue. The secret to the success of Cards Against Humanity might just be Max and his trusty Dixon Ticonderoga No. 2 pencil. As every new idea he has, he writes it down with this preferred writing implement. I’ve already ordered a box. We talked to Max about Chicago, his love for magic, the newly founded Mural Registry, and many other random (but important) topics. In today’s episode, Christopher Lochhead dives down deep into the power of colors and how it affects your brand marketing. In a world where almost all brands are Blue (and some are red), how do you make your brand different and stand out? What’s With Color Blue? Christopher recently represented a tech company with a stand-out logo, it's color pink and orange. According to this company, 70% of B2B company logos are blue. Christopher researched this claim and indeed found out, 33% of the world’s top brands companies are blue. Some 29% are red, 28% are black or grey and 13% are yellow or gold. “A big part of doing legendary marketing is standing out, being different, being unique. Then for the most part, if you’re gonna be blue, you’re not going to stand out and frankly if you’re gonna be red, you’re probably not gonna stand out, too.” - Christopher Lochhead Colors and Lack Thereof One of the guests of Follow Your Different David Rendall, Ph.D., author of Freak Factor, is one unique example. He embraced the color pink. In fact, he wears pink shirts, pink suits and even his eyeglass frames are pink. As a public speaker, he wears pink not only to stand out but to send a message to the world that its okay to express oneself and let go of what others might think of you. Another example is Max Temkin, the creator of Cards Against Humanity. He shared that he has no eye for color so he just went with black and white, with a distinct font. “If you think about brands how many brands do you know that actually are strategic in their use of color?” - Christopher Lochhead An Underexploited Opportunity Legendary companies and legendary brands stand out because they are different. Color is an underexploited opportunity to stand out. Christopher encourages marketers and designers to think strategically about color. “If you are involved with the re-brand or brand launch, I would encourage you to take a look at all of the brands in your near-space categories and hold it against the wall and look at what they look like [against your brand]” - Christopher Lochhead. Christopher further asks, “how can you use color as part of your brand, as part of your logo to stand out? Ultimately, he asks what color or colors can you own? This is a great opportunity to gain a strategic advantage over the competition. Living legendary designer Max Temkin, co-creator of Cards Against Humanity (“a party game for horrible people”) talks about his ideas on design, company building, his work ethic—or lack thereof—and so much more. Max's Non-Existent Work Ethic Max proclaims himself as a horrible procrastinator with no work ethic. He can never decide to do something and sit down to actually do it. Because of this, he has developed coping mechanisms to get him through last-minute clutch work. This ties up with the philosophy of necessary and sufficient conditions that he personally believes in. Working hard is necessary to keep a business running but it is never sufficient. Hard work needs to be coupled with critical thinking, team play and good energy to make legendary things possible. “No one is successful just because they killed themselves with work.“ - Max Temkin The Wild Medium: Design Max says that it is incredibly difficult to break down what it means to be a designer. After all, so many skills go into design. There is design thinking, organization and empathy for the user, and then there are the technical skills like typography and color theory. Because of the many skills that a designer can sink their teeth into, no designer is excellent at everything. It would take more than one lifetime to master them. For example, Max has never understood color theory, so he stuck to black and white, which eventually became his brand. “I've definitely come to suspect that for many people, what you might call their style is like the coping mechanisms they've developed to cover those holes in their skill set.” - Max Temkin Building Small Things Max says that people usually build things from the desire to make them just because it would be neat to do so. Some people would put up their creations for the people to decide their fate. Some would build a company with the mindset of growing its worth into a billion dollars. Max believes that these ideas, however, are rarely delightful and rarely work. In contrast, allowing yourself to think small and unconstrained would help your ideas grow into huge phenomena. “Very rarely does someone go, ‘I'm gonna change the world with this huge idea' and then it works exactly as intended.” - Max Temkin To hear more about design, gaming and the Do By Friday podcast from Max, download and listen to the episode. Ask Cards Against Humanity co-founder Max Temkin about his brand, and he’ll answer in a manner perfectly befitting a former philosophy major: “Well…what’s a brand?” It’s a valid question, and if you were to take the CAH approach and pick a random white card from the deck of the bestselling card game to answer it,… The post The Power of Defying Convention: 5 Tips for Building a Better Brand appeared first on Echelon Design Inc.

"The smartest thing we did was reject old fashion, old media, old world advice of how to trick people into giving you their money" - Max Temkin If you are becoming frustrated, depressed, and disillusioned learning about how to raise money to fund your project, then this podcast will inspire you. Max Temkin has directly raised, or advised in a number of projects that have raised over $10 million total on Kickstarter. You MAY have heard of them… In December, 2015, Max raised $1,479,046 for "Secret Hitler", a social deduction table game based in pre World War 2 Germany. Players have to help or hinder the beautifully illustrated Junta-Komodo-Dragon-Adolf-Hitler from taking over the government. His goal was $54,450 and he raised over $100,000 in the first 24 hours. But that is not where he started. His first project was Cards Against Humanity, one of the first games in the early days of Kickstarter, raised "only" $15,540 but since exploded and has been #1 Best Seller on Amazon for Toys and Games for as long as we can remember. (...and is a staple at every games night I host with friends!) In fact, Cards Against Humanity, as of publishing, occupies 3 - WOW! - of the top 20 spots on the Amazon.com Best Seller List including the TOP 2, besting classics like Jenga and Connect 4. Max also helped advise his friends who made the Most Backed Game in Kickstarter history, Exploding Kittens, which raised $8,782,571. Max understands Kickstarter, the Kickstarter Community, and his audience, probably better than anyone on the planet. But Max is not a "marketer". He hates "gimmicks" and "tricks" and "gurus who don't know what they are talking about". If you are feeling jaded by the Kickstarter Marketing World, and think that in order to fund your project you need to sacrifice your vision, then listen now. It will be the best 38 minutes of your day, guaranteed! You will discover The number #1 Trend in Kickstarter Today Why Max still has the "fear to launch" and it never goes away, even after millions of dollars raised Why it is important to ignore the temptation to look for "tricks" and "gimmicks" to hit your goal and "focus on the art" Why no one knows really knows what the future of your project, or any project, holds What it means to "front load" your project, and why it is absolutely critical to the success of your project (...and also when it isn't!) Why “failing a project is a gift”...and how to embrace failure so "you are not on the hook to build something nobody wants" Why you should never take the money if you don't reach your funding goal on Indiegogo Why you should "Show don't tell" to sell your project The importance of "user testing" and "iteration" to produce the best product possible before you launch your campaign (Max took a year and over a hundred iterations to get Secret Hitler just right The importance of knowing your market better than they know themselves The difference between "a good project and a good life" Why your story is so important and why you need to be crystal clear communicating what it is about Your page should clearly explain why a backer should not fund your project How crushing his funding goal on Cards Against Humanity set the project delivery back Famous last words: "Finally, I am not the funniest guy in the room" -Del Close Resources Mentioned: Connect with Max on Twitter Secret Hitler Secret Hitler Website Secret Hitler Kickstarter Campaign Secret Hitler on Forbes Cards Against Humanity Cards Against Humanity Website Cards Against Humanity Kickstarter Page Cards Against Humanity Review Kickstarter CASE STUDY: Cards Against Humanity Buy Cards Against Humanity on Amazon Max’s Other Projects Humans vs Zombies - Help develop the software that powers games of Humans vs. Zombies at over 350 locations and universities all over the world. You're going to love this week's phenomenal conversation about Starship Troopers (1997) with special guests Mary Robinette Kowal and Max Temkin! Tune in for a thought-provoking discussion (and very amicable disagreement) about how successfully the film executes its satire of fascist military fantasies. Just what are the possibilities and limits of satire? What can director Paul Verhoeven's career tell us about this "pointed critique of American imperialism"? In 2011, Max Temkin and several friends crowdfunded one of the most successful games on Kickstarter — Cards Against Humanity. On Well Made, Max is talking about Blackbox, the shipping company he co-created after realizing how difficult shipping a wildly popular physical product could be. On this episode, Max talks about creating his own rules about doing business (4:54). He shares how they build Cards’s sometimes-inappropriate-but-always-hilarious brand of writing into the company (13:39). He shares more about Blackbox (23:30) and what they learned from shipping one of the most funded Kickstarter games (26:28). Even after rapid growth, Max talks about the growing pains of their startup (28:58). Max discusses the games he’s created and what he's playing nowadays (52:25). Finally, Max shares how a good game (and business) is all about creating a rich narrative. Links and images from this post are on the Lumi blog.

For episode 100, Khierstyn wanted to do something big. Bigger, better, and cooler than ever! What’s better than bringing back the podcast’s most downloaded guest? Nothing, that’s what. Especially when the guest is Max Temkin of Cards Against Humanity! Max and his team, they aren’t like everyone else, nor do they want to be. They wear their honesty and integrity on their sleeve. It's about good products selling, no matter how you market them. Sit back and enjoy as Max shares his unique views and opinions - ones that rocketed him to the top. Marketing Strategies? We made a damn good product. Max doesn't believe in hack or tricks or guarantees. In his mind, when someone markets a magic hack for something, it's like selling lies. People are hungry for shortcuts. What they want is the easiest way to get the biggest payout. Life isn't like that. There IS no magic secret way to achieve your dreams. Cards Against Humanity didn't use tactics like "artificial scarcity". It's about having a great product that people want, selling at a steady rate, and spending less than you make. Max says it's that simple. Staying top of mind and marketing on a limited budget. Traditionally, a marketing budget is the monetary sum you intend to you to advertise. Traditional marketing is something Max states they avoided. They don't spend money on Facebook advertising, or radio adverts. They do spend money on doing cool and unique things. Things that people would enjoy and would want to watch and share. In this way, they do spend money to market, but it's not where others might first turn. Cards Against Humanity, and Max, have developed a cult following. People identify with and embrace the alternative means of marketing they use. Max quotes, "If you want people to talk about you, it's on you to do something worth talking about." If Obama was our CEO... Speaking of doing something people want to talk about, Max shared his experiences. Specifically, he told us about an ad they ran on Craigslist in January 2017. Max said that while enjoying a brainstorming session, they came up with an idea. Wouldn't it be amazing if Barack Obama was our new CEO? Many of the ideas they throw around don't make it to public consumption, but this one did! It's a perfect example of the power of alternative advertising. They made a post on Craigslist and it got loads of attention. You know what that cost them to run? Nothing. Sure, they haven't picked up Obama yet, but there is still hope! (Note to Barack Obama, if you're reading this, give Max a shout, he'd love to hear from you! mail@cardsagainsthumanity.com ) Blackbox - Our not-so-secret new business for crowd funders! Blackbox, ever heard of it? It’s a new shipping company from the creators of Cards Against Humanity. Max tells us that they had to go through the motions when it came to shipping the game. They ended up having to build and infrastructure to do it. It's now spinning off as it's own service. Blackbox takes their existing experience and connections to make it accessible. It's geared at crowd funders too. Max tells of how he made a critical shipping mistake that ended up costing him. With certain campaigns, you need to know an exact shipping cost up front, or you're charged for it. That's why they want to make it safe, easy and fast. Enter the details online and get an accurate, guaranteed shipping price. Oh, and they take care of everything so that you don't have to; Customer service, shipping, storage, returns, exchanges you name it. The strategy behind marketing Secret Hitler Let's talk about something else that Max Temkin knocked out of the park. Have you ever played Secret Hitler? It's a brilliantly marketed board game of hidden identities. The website describes it as: " Secret Hitler is a dramatic game of political intrigue and betrayal set in 1930's Germany. Players are secretly divided into two teams - liberals and fascists. Known only to each other, the fascists coordinate to sow distrust and install their cold-blooded leader. The liberals must find and stop the Secret Hitler before it’s too late." It was also wildly successful on Kickstarter. We asked Max what drove the success of this game, and he imparted some real gems. He's done design for more than 15 years professionally. He works with and designs branding for political campaigns. He insists there is a visual database in his head of styles and ideas that he can pull out on command, a benefit of experience. Secret Hitler was a dream project, one that he had the money to fund. He had money to put into testing and it became a balance of art and science. Max made sure to emphasize that, despite money, there is never a guarantee on return. Sometimes not having money can make for a better product because you have to work harder to achieve it. Ever heard Max talk about Star Wars and the reason that they became a classic? You should tune in to the podcast to hear more. If you could do it all again, what would you do differently? Khierstyn prepared a few questions in advance for Max. The first being from Zach Smith, founder of Funded.Today. He asked - "if you had to do it all again, what would you do differently?" He tells of how he charged only for the cards and not shipping at first. While it was during a time when that was more common, he said it was a nightmare. This nightmare was part of what fed into Blackbox. He did mention one regret - that he let inexperience push him away from the design he truly wanted. Everything worked in the end, but he wishes he had the courage to make the choice that felt right. Max warns listeners, "Fail because you make it too good, not because you made it too bad." Where’s the line? Let’s talk being offensive. There is no line per say, but there are rules. The goal is to make people laugh and feel good when they play. It's not to make anyone feel bad. Sometimes the enveloped gets puts but Max tries his best to ensure it's within these rules. There was a time, Max recants when he was young and in college. There was a cheap transsexual joke he still regrets. It came about after he saw a post on Tumblr. Someone expressed feelings of being bullied. They said when the card came up, the transsexual player was bullied, and it was no longer a fun time. "It's all fun and games... until we become bullies." Max explains "We have a social responsibility." Super Happy Fun Time Uncensored Bonus Content Fun and games you say? It's about that time! Max chats with Khierstyn about crowdfunding platforms. At the same time, they chat about (and dissect) campaigns seen on Funded.Today. **Warning - This is uncut for your listening pleasures! Back to Work, Roderick on the Line.
Max Temkin is a co-founder of Cards Against Humanity, a "party game for horrible people," and Chicago comedians Joanna Feldman and Julia Weiss are its head writers. After a successful Kickstarter in 2011, Cards Against Humanity was released independently, reaching #1 in Amazon's Games section and spawning numerous expansion packs and copycats. We discuss flying while stoned, what makes a card work in the Cards Against Humanity writers' room, and why Max was dreading coming on the show.

So it's come to this. We broke our one rule. We prepared for an episode. We've had 32 episodes of unprepared audio piped right into your ears and now we've let you down. We've threatened it before, but this time we followed through. We're sorry. This week Jesse and Kevin talk about the animated sitcom spectrum, tightly packed humor, cartoon violence, things Jesse doesn't know about The Simpsons, Seth McFarland, hired goons, evil pig guys, Joomps Wobbin, what high school libraries look like, Dawson Casting, everything in the 90s was ugly, clerical errors in the afterlife, and New York accents. Links Jesse and Kevin watched some television together. First was The Simpsons S04E17 "Last Exit to Springfield", following on Alan Sepinwall's orders. Kristen Schaal is a horse. Look at her dance, look at her go, well look at her dance like a horse. We also watched Buffy the Vampire Slayer S01E01 "Welcome to the Hellmouth". But not before we talked a bit about Hannibal season 3. Jesse gets very upset about how _The OA _ended. Jesse is planning on watching The Good Place next. My Cousin Vinny is a perfect movie. Max Temkin made a Deep Space Nine episode guide. Jesse's favorite episode of 30 Rock is S06E08 "Leap Day".

Cards Against Humanity's Max Temkin (@maxtemkin) is co-creator of Amazon's #1 selling card game – actually the #1 seller in all of the whole Toys & Games category. It's a game for horrible people, and it's also America's #1 gerbil coffin. You've probably played it before. Max Temkin and his friends were self-described "nerds." They didn't play sports, they didn't have girlfriends, and they were bored. So, they played lots of board games. They played Balderdash so much, they couldn't even play it anymore because they knew all of the words in the game. They became game connoisseurs. They played so many games, they had to make their own. Cards Against Humanity started as PDFs you could download and print out. The game is still available this way, for free, on their website, but Cards Against Humanity has independently produced and sold their game, making millions in profit. Listen to this interview to learn how to make a good impression on notable people, how to be ready to act when luck comes your way, what deep two psychological phenomena made Cards Against Humanity so explosively popular, and why it's important to figure things out for yourself. Also, learn how Max and team made $70,000 by literally selling "nothing," and nearly $4 million selling bullshit. I mean actual shit from bulls. "The Q and the Grey" - Max Temkin, box maker, game designer, and Star Trek enthusiast, joins Scott to discuss VOY’s The Q and the Grey (S3E11). Topics include Max’s thoughts on why Voyager has some of the best episodes in all of Trek, how this episode is a great argument against that view point, how the 90’s were a very different time, and how much this episode upsets Civil War buffs. Host Scott McNulty with Max Temkin.
Pat and Pat sit down with Max Temkin of Cards Against Humanity to talk about "The Neutral Zone", the final episode in the long, strange journey of season one.
On the third anniversary of the release of the first episode of MBSing, MBS holed up in a studio and took 35 calls from past guests of the show. The topics ranged from specific episode updates to current concerns to catching up. Here's the third installment of nine calls from friends: Vernon Mina, who remarked on how much we made each other laugh and offered a clarification of his parents' roles in his life. Eric Braband, who made a Spotify playlist of Rustic Overtones songs and remarked on our newfound cohabitation. Katie Wadsworth, who updated myself and the listeners on her transition from moving back in with her folks to making the move to LA. Max Temkin, who laments our grounded Animorphs podcasting endeavor and pitches a few substitutes. Katie Utke, who speaks her thoughts on Harry Potter and the Sacred Child, the film adaptation of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, and Emma Watson's turn in a live-action Beauty and the Beast. Mark Logsdon, who updated on his status with new dad life becoming the new normal after almost a year of it. Alex Talavera, who scolded me for not checking out someone I know being on No Reservations and updated me on US passport holder stats. Matt Visconage, who confirmed the truth of all of his proposed conspiracies including the marking up of momentarily popular Mighty Muggs. Bill Green, who got so fed up by the political system that he's going to law school at Notre Dame in the fall to tackle the issues as much as he can. (PS sorry my side of the audio for this one is VERY low.) Thanks to Iron Galaxy, The Chicago Podcast Cooperative, and Lizzo.

"The smartest thing we did was reject old fashion, old media, old world advice of how to trick people into giving you their money" - Max Temkin If you are becoming frustrated, depressed, and disillusioned learning about how to raise money to fund your project, then then this podcast will inspire you. We got to sit down with one of the creators of Cards Against Humanity, Max Temkin, to talk about what the CAH crew are currently working on; the Science Pack of cards that is raising money for the Science Ambassador Scholarship to the board game show Tabletop Deathmatch. To Drew’s delight we hold an in-depth Star Trek conversation. Plus, we had the audacity to challenge Max to a game of “Onion/NotTheOnion”. Spoiler Warning: Max is good at games.
Max Temkin is one of the creators of Cards Against Humanity, the “party game for horrible people.” What began as a game Max played with his friends soon became a successful Kickstarter campaign in 2011, and it has turned into one of the most popular, entertaining, and sometimes controversial card games today.
Chicago Camps interviews Fred Beecher, an Axure fanatic (and perhaps a bit of a legend), a grower of UX Designers through his UX apprenticeship program at The Nerdery in Minneapolis, and a regular contributor to the UX Design community through a variety of articles and presentations. Fred was the closing keynote for Prototype Camp 2013 and is talking to us about a whole bunch of things around prototyping and Prototype Camp.
I wanted to do something big for my 1-year anniversary, and boy was this night one of my favorites in a long time. Max Temkin and I got to carry on about our mutual love of the long-running young adult novel series Animorphs for an hour while getting laughs from a live audience and being flanked by some other incredible past guests along the way. If you've never read Animorphs, there's no need to fret: Max covers the plot basics before diving into his favorite aspects of the novels and the many, many qualms he had with the short-lived television show (I realize at some point that I overlooked them for the dreamy Shawn Ashmore and Christopher Ralph). Along with the observation that "If you had told me that all of my hours of consuming Nickelodeon things would lead to me reading a science-fiction series and then get to talk to a girl about it for an hour, I would have not believed me if I said that... that would've blown my mind as a kid," Max also dropped the lovely Ebert quote, "It's not what a movie is about, it's how it is about it," which also applies to how people like things, an MBSing theme. Along the way we get an apology to Auburn football from Chandler Goodman and Spencer Smith, a Bio-Dome complaint in the form of a ridiculous song from Tim Dunn with a rebuttal from Rob Grabowski, the settling of an off-mic poke war with Matt Young, a lovely MBSing-based game show (called Matt, Mark, Julia, Jeff) from Adam Levin, and a heartfelt thanks from Nick Johnson that made me straight up cry. Thanks for a great year everyone. Here's to many more. Notes: Penn and Teller's How to Play With Your Food Max's tweet about the Animorphs pullout in Nickelodeon Magazine that was one of the only things he could find when trying to actually Google to find the issue. A wikifur entry for Animorphs. Animorphs ebooks. All of them. Space Cases intro. Fake Animorphs covers.
Greg Wohlwend developed the popular game Threes with his colleague Asher Vollmer. Greg is a games illustrator and designer who was part of teams that made Hundreds, Gasketball, Solipskier, and Ridiculous Fishing. Threes is his breakout game — and has inspired lots of admiration, frustration, and imitation. He and I talk in this episode about the joy of success, the burden of being independent, and the problems with parasites. Greg wrote this post to the hobbyist on the ledge. Greg designed the logo for Indie Game: The Movie; the creators of that film are two-time guests on the show, first in December 2012, and then a year later for a check in. The money in Minecraft is in YouTube videos of people playing through levels. We ran a story about this in The Magazine. The Scratch programming language leads to the Pencil programming language which led to JavaScript for my older son. CoderDojo uses Scratch to mentor kids in programming. Max Temkin baited a Los Angeles Times reporter who wrote an uninformed piece about the Threes ripoff 2048. The extended account of Threes development reveals the exhaustive and useful process of iteration, testing, and killing one's darlings. The Pop Culture Happy Hour podcast had a very nice discussion at the end of an episode where one panelist recommend 2048, and another explained kindly that Threes was the original and the thing to which one graduates as it's tougher. (Listen around minute 37.) Greg recommends the Indomie brand of ramen.
This episode, we're stoked to talk with Max Temkin, one of the co-creators of Cards Against Humanity, about the indie title Spelunky - a game Max calls the best ever made! Could that be true? I talk to game designer Max Temkin about his two viral success stories with real world game Humans vs Zombies and the breakout card game hit Cards Against Humanity. Cards Against Humanity was one of the top board game Kickstarter projects in 2011. It raised $15k in January of 2011, a lot back then but now a modest success in the current environment. But Max and team chose to make Cards Against Humanity available only through Amazon, a decision that now has their product listing as one of the top sellers in Amazon's Toy and Game section. Max talks about the process of having a game move from a Kickstarter success to a Amazon.com best seller.
