Nick and Hannah both love board games. There I said it. So what are they doing in a Civics 101 episode? Well, from Student Council and Model UN to CIA intelligence acquisition scenarios, there is a fine line between games and simulation. We learn more about things when we pretend to do them. Today we talk to three designers about their civic-centric games; Tory Brown of Fort Circle Games discusses Votes for Women, Cole Wehrle of Wehrlegig Games breaks down John Company, and Non Breaking Space explains Cross Bronx Expressway, an upcoming game from GMT. In this episode, SM:TT is joined by Philip Stern, a historian of the British empire, to play John Company 2nd Edition, a game about the rise and fall of the British East India Company. They discuss the colonial origins of the modern corporation, the complex historical relationship between public and private interests, and the capacity for games to dramatize how an empire happens.

On this week's episode Conor, Joe and Dan sit down with one of our favourite returning guests, Bobby Hill. We discuss the reception he received from 2021's Hadrian's Wall before diving into his upcoming 2025 release: The Anarchy. Bobby shares the story of this tumultuous time in history and how he was able to use it as inspiration for his next Euro-and-write game. In Sizzling Games, Joe reveals that he is a real fungi, Dan is matching wits with his nemesis, Bobby is composing a winning symphony, and Conor is visiting space and feline fine. There's also the Question of the Pod, Swear an Oath, and all of the usual shenanigans you've come to expect from the Board Game BBQ Podcast. On this weeks episode we veer almost accidentally into a Cole Wherle Special, as we discuss games that happen "above the table". A normal phrase. That everyone uses. Normally. How do these new narrative-driven games full of negotiation and exploitation stack up to the OG war sim Diplomacy? We then fiercely negotiate the pros and cons of Oath and John Company and the relative merits of "mild" exploitation. Exciting stuff! After this we will all need a shit down. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Happy New Year, everybody! To kick things off right, here's an episode looking at all the cool games we're hoping to play in 2024. It's full of plenty of laughter, largely because of the maniacal giggling of Curtis, our newest cohost! Among the things we're laughing at: This map from The Stifling Dark amuses Joe. There is much wailing and gnashing of teeth as we pre-empt each others' picks (although no one else wants any of Brian's picks) This terrifying array of tokens from Magic Realm, which is getting an unofficial remake this year. And then, to moderate the mood, we take a sharp and unplanned left turn into games that make you feel icky to play, including John Company, Doubt is Our Product (read this amazing designer diary), and An Infamous Traffic. Thanks as always for listening! If you have a few extra minutes, we'd love it if you could give us an iTunes review. Please leave one if you can - it helps us a lot! We'd also love to have you visit our website and let us know what kinds of games we should discuss next. In this episode Joel and Jack talk about books because they can read, believe it or not, and also get into the nitty gritty(ish) about John Company that Joel got to play twice in a row. Jack also played 1882 but didn't get to talk about it so that's a preview for next episode. We talk Bret Easton Ellis' newest novel, The Shards, as well as a graphic novel called the Fade Out, and a fantasy series that has something to do with the moon and archives, Jack cannot recall as he writes this but Joel likes it a lot and listens to them on audio book while he cooks and cleans.

Today we review Origins: First Builders by Adam Kwapinski, better known for super-thematic American games like Nemesis that he's designed for Awaken Realms. He's given us a new dice drafting game about worshipping alien motherships. Have you ever wanted to play out the plot of Stargate, with ancient aliens assisting primitive humans to become dominant civilizations? Well too bad, because Origins: First Builders is a themeless Euro published by Board & Dice, publisher of themeless euros. Two centuries ago, the military forces of the East India Company were the British empire's largest armies. Rightly regarded as ‘an extraordinary phenomenon', they comprised a huge multi-ethnic force, the largest disciplined army in Asia and arguably the key element in Britain's conquest of the Indian sub-continent. In 1857 the mutiny-rebellion utterly transformed this unique force. In this podcast two of the foremost military historians of British India look at the heyday of the Company's Armies. Professor Peter Stanley of UNSW Canberra, author of the forthcoming book John Company's Armies, discusses these unique but obscure forces with one of India's foremost military historians, Squadron-Leader Rana Chhina.

SCHON. CLEVER.Buona magione a tutti e come sempre…Ci vediamo dall’altra parte!

Mark thinks it is colossally unfair that he gets so much flak for speaking French when mediocre game designers get to throw around a word like "tableau." Then again, Mark and Walker can't quite agree on what a tableau constitutes. Mark seems to define it the way that American judge famously defined pornography--he knows it when he sees it--whereas Walker is more conspiratorial about tableaus (Tableaux? Tableausies?), seeing them everywhere and lurking behind every player board or suite of special powers. Nothing seems to inspire disagreement among geeks like a taxonomy.
It is important to stay flexible, and follow the ways of those who practise judo and jiu-jitsu. That is why we choke people as often as we can. Wait, that's not right. Rather, it is important to be supple and adaptable. We had intended to be on time and talking about different things, but sundry unrelated crises have changed both of those plans. We apologize for the delay, but we are confident our new plans are much better. We adapt. We choke. At any rate, Walker tries to rein him in from ranting too long about obvious component failures, publisher laziness, and alleged outright theft.
