Broken Record with Rick Rubin, Malcolm Gladwell, Bruce Headlam and Justin Richmond

DJ Drama is one of the most iconic mixtape DJs of all time. His legendary Gangsta Grillz tapes helped propel artists like T.I. and Young Jeezy to stardom. His classic Dedication series reinvigorated Lil' Wayne's career in the early and mid-2000s. By 2007, the underground mixtape market was booming. But in January of that year DJ Drama and his longtime business partner Don Cannon were arrested by federal agents and charged with bootlegging and racketeering. The much publicized raid only boosted DJ Drama's profile. In the years since, DJ Drama has built a successful record label and he's continued to make mixtapes. Tyler The Creator even crafted his latest album, Call Me If You Get Lost, with DJ Drama's classic adlibs all over it. It won the Grammy for best rap album in 2022. That same year though, while DJ Drama was professionally at the height of his success, personally he was battling an addiction to opioids—an ongoing struggle he's only recently started to talk about publicly. On today's episode Leah Rose talks to DJ Drama about how he got sober after being what he calls “a functioning junkie” who spent six figures a year on opioids. He also tells the story of how Lil Jon recorded his iconic “gangsta grillz” drops in Drama's laundry room. And Drama explains why he decided to sign Lil Uzi Vert and Jack Harlow to his Atlantic Records imprint, Generation Now. My mother once told me that you never get old as long as you keep growing. I live by that. I see people all the time who seem stagnant in their lives and jobs, primarily because they don't see a place for growth in themselves. You have to applaud people who find a way to extend their life by finding something new. I look at my guest today as someone who also practices that theory. When I first met Wille Joe, he was on stage rapping songs from his latest mixtape. At the time, the Vallejo native was one of the many young artists in Atlanta who were primed to blow up and become the next big thing in hip-hop. Signing with Jazze Pha was supposed to be the first step. As it is in music, not everything turns into gold. After signing with the producer, Willie parted ways with his label after a lack of movement in his career at the time. He would take a break and take it back to the bay. That's where he got back to his roots and revitalized his music career. He even made a song that became a bay area classic during that time.  As fate should have it, rather than Willie becoming that next hip-hop star, he became the person who would help develop the next hip-hop star. Today, Joe is head of A&R at Generation Now. Founded by Dj Drama and Don Cannon, the label is the home for the likes of Lil Uzi Vert and Jack Harlow. Joe has found a new calling and is thriving and growing in it. For this episode, Willie and I reminisce about his past music career, barely missing out on the hyphy movement, going back to the bay and creating a classic, pivoting into an executive role, and the rise of Jack Harlow and his favorite strains. Stream our full interview now.  Support the show

When I asked my son to describe his generation, he came up with “Generation NOW” which I found fascinating. He went on to say “mum, we can't wait for anything because we are so used to getting everything NOW!”. I actually think it's such an appropriate description. Generation Smartphone is also a great name because it says it all and the speed at which smartphones have totally changed how we live is scary. Welcome to Part 1 in my new podcast book club series on the book The Tech Diet for your Child and Teen by Brad Marshall. Over the next couple of months, I will be going through each chapter of this book highlighting all you need to know in order to come up with a media plan that is actually implementable, practical and works. In today's episode, we discuss smartphones, the research and the science. Do you understand how dopamine works? It certainly helps, so tune in… The links to buy the book can be found below. Jack Harlow's sophomore effort Come Home The Kids Miss You has made its debut on the Billboard 200 chart. According to Billboard, the Generation Now artist's sophomore album debuted at No. 3 on the chart with an estimated 113,000 total album-equivalent units. The No. 3 finish was a two-spot improvement over Harlow's debut effort That's What They All Say, which peaked at No. 5 in 2020. Harlow's album, jam-packed with guest appearances from the likes of Drake, Pharrell Williams, Lil Wayne and Justin Timberlake, was originally projected to debut at the No. 2 spot behind Latin superstar Bad Bunny's new album, Un Verano Sin Ti. However, the strength of Future's former No. 1 album I NEVER LIKED YOU pushed Harlow from the second slot. source: https://hiphopdx.com/news/id.70281/title.jack-harlow-come-home-the-kids-miss-you-makes-billboard-200-debut# What's going on Internet, Analytic here aka Dreamz and I would like to welcome you to mine, which I call the Notorious Mass Effect Podcast!
