DJ Drama is one of the most iconic mixtape DJs of all time. His legendary Gangsta Grillz tapes helped propel artists like T.I. and Young Jeezy to stardom. His classic Dedication series reinvigorated Lil' Wayne's career in the early and mid-2000s. By 2007, the underground mixtape market was booming. But in January of that year DJ Drama and his longtime business partner Don Cannon were arrested by federal agents and charged with bootlegging and racketeering. The much publicized raid only boosted DJ Drama's profile. In the years since, DJ Drama has built a successful record label and he's continued to make mixtapes. Tyler The Creator even crafted his latest album, Call Me If You Get Lost, with DJ Drama's classic adlibs all over it. It won the Grammy for best rap album in 2022. That same year though, while DJ Drama was professionally at the height of his success, personally he was battling an addiction to opioids—an ongoing struggle he's only recently started to talk about publicly. On today's episode Leah Rose talks to DJ Drama about how he got sober after being what he calls “a functioning junkie” who spent six figures a year on opioids. He also tells the story of how Lil Jon recorded his iconic “gangsta grillz” drops in Drama's laundry room. And Drama explains why he decided to sign Lil Uzi Vert and Jack Harlow to his Atlantic Records imprint, Generation Now. My mother once told me that you never get old as long as you keep growing. I live by that. I see people all the time who seem stagnant in their lives and jobs, primarily because they don't see a place for growth in themselves. You have to applaud people who find a way to extend their life by finding something new. I look at my guest today as someone who also practices that theory. When I first met Wille Joe, he was on stage rapping songs from his latest mixtape. At the time, the Vallejo native was one of the many young artists in Atlanta who were primed to blow up and become the next big thing in hip-hop. Signing with Jazze Pha was supposed to be the first step. As it is in music, not everything turns into gold. After signing with the producer, Willie parted ways with his label after a lack of movement in his career at the time. He would take a break and take it back to the bay. That's where he got back to his roots and revitalized his music career. He even made a song that became a bay area classic during that time. As fate should have it, rather than Willie becoming that next hip-hop star, he became the person who would help develop the next hip-hop star. Today, Joe is head of A&R at Generation Now. Founded by Dj Drama and Don Cannon, the label is the home for the likes of Lil Uzi Vert and Jack Harlow. Joe has found a new calling and is thriving and growing in it. For this episode, Willie and I reminisce about his past music career, barely missing out on the hyphy movement, going back to the bay and creating a classic, pivoting into an executive role, and the rise of Jack Harlow and his favorite strains. The the…the Cannon. On today's episode we're joined by one of the most iconic producers/music executives in the industry, Don Cannon. If you're not familiar with DJ Cannon he helped create the sound of the mixtape era. Currently, he is the CEO of the extremely successful Generation Now and co-founder of the TmrO app. First, Cannon takes us through his early years in the studio from bumping into Kanye and playing basketball with Kobe. The guys then all share a moment of how different the next generation of artists are than the previous ones, which leads to why Cannon chose not to go to the Gucci and Jeezy Versus. The discussion returns to today with the controversial rating from Pitchfork on Ice Spice's EP. The debating with Dom continues as the guys run through recent comments by 50 Cent, Ludacris, the undervaluing of Dr Dre's catalog, favorite lyrics/beat. Finally, like all good debates including Don and Mal we land on Michael vs. LeBron. The guys share their personal NBA top 5, as well as, their rapper top 5. Meek Mill is a rapper from Philadelphia. He’s put out five albums. His most recent, Championships, debuted at #1 on the charts, and was nominated for a Grammy for Best Rap Album. Back in 2007, He was arrested on a gun charge at the age of 19, and over the last eleven years, he was sent to prison four times for parole violations. But in July 2019, based on evidence of alleged police corruption, the Pennsylvania Superior Court threw out his conviction, and the parole violation that had led to his most recent time in prison, a five-month sentence. It was soon after Meek Mill was released that this song, “Trauma,” was created. He took inspiration from his experiences in prison, and his early life in Philadelphia. In this episode, Meek Mill and Don Cannon, who produced the track, break down how the whole thing came together. songexploder.net/meek-mill Right now, Radiotopia is holding its annual fundraiser. BANG! @southernvangard #radio presents the ULTRA BEAST interview session! It’s only right we have rhyme animals 4-IZE & SEÑOR KAOS for our Thursday interview session this week, given Halloween falls on a Thursday this year. These two Atlanta MC’s have come together again to form as ULTRA BEAST and are dropping their 2nd LP “UNITED” on Nov. 8th. They dropped by for an in-studio interview to talk about the genesis of the album, how guests like WORDSWORTH, PUNCHLINE, HEADKRACK, NUMBER 2, ALEXANDER BLANE, & GREATNESS IS EZ landed on the project and the stable of producers they picked to provide the soundscape - folks like DON CANNON, D.R.U.G.S. BEATS, E.JONES, ILLASTRATE, CRAZY DJ BAZARRO & SPITZWELL. We go way back with these gentlemen so we also get into some old Atlanta stories - how about 4IZE first roommate when he moved to the A was LALA ANTHONY?! KAOS provides some insight on how he broke into the promotion and marketing game - including an insane story on how he threw JANELLE MONÁE’S first sponsored Atlanta showcase and why the even the fire marshal couldn’t stop the show. There’s a lot more goodness inside but you’re gonna have to press play to hear it - so grab “UNITED” when it drops Nov. 8th, hit the Ep229 mix for an exclusive sneak peek of the album and remember it’s always that #SmithsonianGrade #TwiceAWeek #WeAreTheGard // southernvangard.com // @southernvangard on #applepodcasts #stitcherradio #soundcloud #mixcloud #youtube // #hiphop #rap #undergroundhiphop #boombap #DJ #mix #interview #podcast #ATL #WORLDWIDE #RIPCOMBATJACK Recorded live October 28, 2019 @ Dirty Blanket Studios, Marietta, GA southernvangard.com @southernvangard on #applepodcasts #soundcloud #youtube #spotifypodcast #googlepodcasts #stitcherradio #mixcloud #SmithsonianGrade #TwiceAWeek #WeAreTheGard twitter/IG: @southernvangard @jondoeatl @cappuccinomeeks
