8-27-24 Tonight at 9PM ET we will be talking with Matthew Chrispen, with the Texas Mead Association and Texas Mead Cup, and we're doing a live demo of the BJCP Mead Exam tasting, and will be talking about getting certified and things to be aware of. Matt started brewing in November 2009 after a gift of Mr. Beer from a buddy and got hooked. He started blogging at Accidentalis.com a year later, focusing more as a journal focusing on personal progress, homebrewing perspectives, the Brew-Magic, Grainfather, and how Brew-Easy gear setups, and brewing water chemistry how-to's. IHestarted making mead in 2014, under the guidance of members of the Austin Zealots and immediately found success with a medal at his first NHC. 2015 was the year Matt started helping with NHC First Round here in Austin, and he passed the original Mead Examination (written and tasting together) with the help of classes with Eric Lowe and Mike Simmons. As he honed his mead-making, he had a little success at various competitions, including The Mazer Cup and the old Masters of Homebrewing Competition. A few years ago, he made BJCP National and has been grading since. After a short stint at Meridian Hive as GM during Covid and the great Texas Ice Storm, Matt has refocused on mead making and working with the Texas Mead Association and Texas Mead Cup to increase mead awareness and qualify mead judges in Texas. He is passionate about writing high-quality scoresheets and providing helpful feedback. This is as good a month as any to be thinking about your brewery's finances - both long term and short term - and the best practices for a check in or to get your money situation in order. Most brewers don't open a brewery to get into finance, but managing cash flow is a necessary part of the job. Our guest on this episode is Kary Shumway, CPA, former CFO for a beer distributor and current CFO for Wormtown Brewery in Worcester, MA. He's here with insight and a checklist to help get your brewery finances in order. Shumway has spent the last 20 years using finance to help improve financial results in business. Now, he's helping other breweries, wholesalers and cideries to do the same. His financial training programs have been developed on a new learning platform in order to deliver the best experience for you. The programs are designed specifically for non-financial people who have the responsibility of either managing or contributing to the success of business. There are a lot of challenges when operating a small brewery. One of them is trying to stand out among larger counterparts. Be it breweries with state-wide distribution, larger taprooms, or even stadium contracts. But the nano brewery segment is fierce and continues to find ways to make waves and be seen among the country's thousands of breweries. Our guests today will talk about that, from festival strategies to seasonal releases. - Anne Linehan and her husband Ben are the owners of Brocklebank Craft Brewing in Tunbridge, Vermont. She organizes the annual Vermont Nanobrewery Festival also known. In her day job, Anne is the Director of Graduate Academic Programs at Vermont Law and Graduate School. - Dylan VanDetta was was born in Vermont, raised in upstate New York. He started a coffee distributorship before going into Information technology. He started homebrewing in 2012 and in late 2019, he formed Labyrinth Forge Brewing Company intending to contract most of his beer and sell kegs to bars and restaurants around town. Due to Covid-19 he started making home deliveries and selling in cans to grocery stores and out of his home. Today, he's actively looking for a retail space to have a taproom and small brewery. - Joel Sheley is the owner and head brewer at Gateway Brewing, a 5bbl “nano” brewery in the Gateway district of Portland, Oregon. With over 20 years of industry experience, Joel not only excels at developing well-made beers but is also savvy in brewery operations infrastructure and the mechanical side of owning and operating a brewery. The BYO Nano Podcast Episode 34 is sponsored by:Fermentis Discover SafBrew™ BR-8 by Fermentis, the first dry Brett for secondary fermentation. February is always an odd month. The newness of a new year has faded, but around most of the country, it's cold and winter feels endless. It can be hard to get the motivation to get done what needs to be done. In those moments it's good to take on new projects or to tackle the ones that have sat on a to-do list for so long. To help with that motivation we're talking with Ryan Wheaton at Craft Brew Creative about collaboration inside and outside of beer, focusing on your marketing plan, and ways to shake things up. After that our brewer profile heads to Underground Beer Lab in East Syracuse, New York. mivel eddig csak 4 órát, azaz két teljes podcast epizódot* szenteltünk a Grainfather sörfőzőgépének** úgy gondoltuk a kikeresztelkedett Brew Monk hívők még egy külön adásban is megosztják első kézből szerzett tapasztalataikat az eszközről. beszélnek: Mezei Krisztián és Posta Viktor témák célirányosan: eleje - nincs füle! közepe - nincs füle!!! vége - nincs füle és drága!
It's Friday! It's 5pm! It's time for a BIG announcement about the channel as we team up with the Grainfather for a year-long partnership making amazing homebrewing videos. We talk through our first video, which goes live next week, and then turn to the important matter of erm... whether Mountain IPA is like Korean Pop music.Watch this week's video here: https://youtu.be/fXlPKU9capULearn more about the Grainfather here: https://grainfather.com/Brought to you by the team behind the Craft Beer Channel, The Bubble takes an irreverent look at beer from the outside, inviting new people to give us their perspective on the world we're all obsessed with. Brad is the braj behind the PORTLY GENTLEMAN YouTube channel out there in Camarillo, Ca. Brad talks about how his first system was a $1k Grainfather, the serious realities of him being a manager and dealing with employees in California these days, why receiving money (or merch) from beer brands in exchange for reviews / product placement aren't worth it, how it's extremely peaceful to just have a brew day without filming it for YouTube / social media, and much more. Cheers!

“Give a man a beer, waste an hour. Teach a man to brew and waste a lifetime!” – Bill Owen Welcome and glad to have you back! This is HomeBrew RockStars Episode 70 part 2 - “Bring it on home-brewer” (Cue up the Led Zeppelin). In this episode we continue our conversation with Jon Lambert. Jon is the head brewer at Hairy Cow located in the town in Byron IL overlooking the scenic Rock River in Ogle Co. Hairy Cow just celebrated their 2nd anniversary! We discuss Jon’s home brewing roots and his journey to going pro and how much he misses home brewing. The guys share what they have been listening to lately during brew sessions. The guys brought some of the home brews to sip on they talked about in Episode 69. Brent’s dark hoppy ale he calls “Phunky Cold Medusa” is a tasty IPA featuring Medusa hops and a bold 7.2% ABV (all-grain). Kent brought his IPA (brewed on his Brewzilla system) which features some tasty Mandarina Bavaria hops, this has a respectable 6.5% ABV. Mike weighs in with his Christmas ale based on the Boston Beer Co’s Old Fezziwig featuring ginger, sweet orange peel, cinnamon & honey with an ABV of 5.7% (Grainfather). Good beers gents! And by the way if you want to have the guys sample your beer on the show give us a shout either via e-mail, our web site or Facebook. We would love the opportunity and get ya to call in and share with us, we promise we will be nice. We would be remiss if we did not mention our sponsors who we are glad to see are still hanging tough in these trying times. Keep up the good work! If you are looking for a great craft beer and some of the best vegan food in the state line? Try Pig Minds Brewing and check out the new addition that opened just recently, looks awesome guys! Seeking a hard to find commercial craft beer, wine or spirits to take home or as a gift? Stop in to Artale & Co, Anthony and Aaron have plenty of great ideas. When you are ready to brew up one of your favorite homebrew recipes or start a new indoor gardening project stop in to 815 Gardens and Brewing, Bob will be happy to help. And don't forget to swing by Urban Forest for some of the most creative craft beers anywhere! Tell them that HomeBrew Rockstars sent ya. Q. How far can you walk into a forest? A. Half way, then you start walking out. Welcome back to HomeBrew RockStars Episode 67 “Not outa the woods yet”. This is part two of a two part episode where we revisit (has been almost 2 years?!) with the creators of Urban Forest, in this episode we delve further into brewing during a pandemic, brewing with weird hops, mixing beers (a.k.a. blending) and beer cocktail’s (and why they are on the menu at Urban Forest Craft Brewing) Sears shared his popular home brewed Robust Porter. This was a practice run for this recipe on his Grainfather which turned out very well with chocolate and coffee notes, a creamy mouthfeel and a not bashful 7% ABV, opening the door for the almost famous bacon porter which has been served at past Screw City Beer Fests & Great Lakes Brew Fest at Home Brew Island. Kent also served a tasting of his Belgian session (Brewed on the Brewzilla sustem), a lighter sipper keen for a hot summer day and some brats off the grill! If you have a homebrew that you would like us to try and review on the podcast contact us and we will make arrangements to get it into our thirsty hands. Alex and Heath brewers/owners of Urban Forest brought a crowler of their Time & Materials for us to sample. This is a delicious and low gluten Oatmeal Stout based on Heath’s winning home brew version; Silky smooth from the oats, with layers of roast and chocolate with a sneaky 6.7% ABV. A very drinkable and enjoyable beer, well done! Look soon for a rum barrel aged with vanilla version in the works. We also talked about what music we’ve been listening to lately featuring a plethora of artists from James Brown to Courtney Marie Andrews. Alex shared a fin story about recording on a song with Iggy Pop for the Freddy Got Fingered soundtrack! Looking for a great craft beer and some of the best vegan food in the state line? In this episode, we revisit our discussion on what might be our favorite piece of brewing equipment, The Grainfather! And to do it, we have several of our Grainfather brewers on the podcast to share their experiences. There’s been a whole lot of brewing going on with both the old version and the new Connect, so hopefully you learn something useful! Plus, we have local artist J/O/E in studio to delve into the craft beer music scene.

What have I been doing?Besides the holidays and the general business that 2 kids cause, I've been working on Voice Over work, side-gigs, recorded an audiobook, AND have put time into the podcast, just not in a forward-facing way:-I've been updating the site to be more secure-Working on a searchable water database (send any local water reports you have to Scott@WNYBrews.com)-Recording audio of some BJCP materials for personal study guides.-Brewing a bunch.-Working on a Grainfather review. Two episodes a month until the summerAfter summer, I would love to get back to doing an episode a week, but it's hard to do with 2 kids and all the side-gigs I take on.Two videos a monthSame with the episodes, except the videos take a little more time.Get the blog movingThis is the big announcement. There are many home brewing blogs on the internet and some of them are great...some, are not. We have the collective knowledge in Buffalo to make a truly great one, but I need people to write or simply contribute-Recipe's-Reviews-Moderation-Events-Videos-ArticlesI want to keep it simple, so if you write an article, recipe, etc. for WNY Brews, you can monetize it however you'd like. If you want to run ads on it, all of that revenue goes to you. If you write an article that brings in hundreds of thousands of views, you make any advertising revenue from that page. I keep nothing. With Brendan Hartranft and Sarah Fuller at Local 44 Plus Jason Stewart from Grainfather & Ethan Tripp from Fermentery Form West Philly bound for this episode, where we sat down at the bottle shop at Local 44 Beer Bar with owner Brendan Hartranft and manager Sarah Fuller. Also joining us were Jason Stewart, representative for The Grainfather all grain homebrewing systems and Ethan Tripp, founder of the new Fermentery Form – a new farmhouse style brewery in the West Kensington neighborhood of Philadelphia. Dan reported on the Brewers Association’s new independent beer seal and a (obviously misguided) “beer for women” from the Czech Republic. We played a Belgian Beer edition of Libation or Fabrication in Happy fun Time and sampled an array of Belgian beers in honor of Belgian Beer Week and some offeringd from Fermentery Form.
In this episode, Marshall interviews some New Zealand based companies doing great things for brewing and especially homebrewers. A couple guys from Grainfather chat about recent updates to their all-in-one brewing system as well as innovative new products they plan to release soon. Gabi Michael, co-owner of New Zealand's family-owned Gladfield Malt, discusses the great things they're doing with our favorite grains. Finally, the guys responsible for organizing the New Zealand Homebrewers Conference tell us about the logistics of organizing such an event in addition to the unique competition and judging format they developed called BrewMania. In this episode, we discuss brewing your best beers with a limited amount of space and gear. Maybe you live in an apartment and can’t use a burner on your deck. Or maybe you have no space for a temp controlled space, but want to make better beers. Maybe you have a full house and garage with no place for beer or gear, but you really want to brew more often. Maybe you just want a variety of beer styles AND the ability to store them. We hear about problems like that all the time from folks coming in the shop. And there’s almost always a way to get what you want.
In this episode, we discuss our favorite new shop toy, The Grainfather, an electric all-in-one all-grain system. It allows you to mash, recirculate, mash-out, sparge, boil, and chill your wort, all in one 5 to 6 gallon system. Several of us have had a chance to try out the Grainfather at home and we’ve been using it regularly at the shop to brew test batches and kit samples. Plus, it’s also being used for experimental batches at local breweries AND we have a growing number of customers who have bought one for themselves after seeing it in action. For this episode, we invited one of those customers--Eric Tomme--into the studio to lend a hand in discussing the details and the pros and cons of the system.
