The Craft Brewers Conference was held in Indianapolis last month and at the ingredients supplier booths, amid the talk of new hop varieties, there were several beers brewed with non-traditional grains. That's worthy of a closer look and on this episode you'll hear from two brewers - Garrett Oliver of the Brooklyn Brewery and Sandy Boss Febbo of Bang Brewing - who are all in on Fonio and Kernza. The BYO Nano Podcast Episode 65  is sponsored by:RahrBSG / Gambrinus IPA MaltGambrinus IPA Malt possesses an elusive color falling between very pale pilsner and golden pale ale malt. These are confusing times, and hard times to work in a small business. As Bart Watson of the Brewers Association recently said, beer makers really dislike uncertainty. So, how can anyone plan when the global supply chain is changing minute by minute? On this epidode we talk about how to budget for the unknown. The last few months have seen a fire hose of news coming out of Washington D.C., a lot centered around tariffs and global trade. Admittedly, it's difficult to do a show on the topic because of the chaotic nature of the rollout from the White House and how seemingly concrete plans crumble minutes after they are announced. This obviously creates uncertainty in the markets and on main street. This episode features two conversations that center around what might be coming and how to best prepare. Bart Watson the president and CEO of the Brewers Association talks about the bigger picture and then Audra Gaiziunas of Brewed for Her Ledger tells us how you can best budget for uncertainty. The BYO Nano Podcast Episode 64  is sponsored by:RahrBSG / Gambrinus IPA MaltGambrinus IPA Malt possesses an elusive color falling between very pale pilsner and golden pale ale malt. How can your brewery make the most out of the holidays? More than just slinging stout on St. Patrick's Day, or a festbier during Oktoberfest, there are ways to create a welcoming vibe that will get people coming back year after year and can establish your brewery as a hospitable spot. One person who has been working to crack the code is Sam McNulty. He has developed and operates seven restaurants and breweries on West 25th Street in the Ohio City neighborhood of Cleveland's Near West Side. Three of these concepts are brewpubs of vastly different scale: One a nano brewery where experimental beers are concocted, while another is a brewpub restaurant with close to five hundred seats, and in 2016 he rebuilt a 43,000 square foot warehouse that dates back to the 1800s and launched a full-scale production brewery sending Market Garden Brewery beers out across Northeast and Central Ohio.He has lived largely car-free in Ohio City for the past 20+ years. And one of his guiding investment principles is to nest his businesses within a 15-minute bicycle ride from the Market Garden Brewery. As one of his former professors once said: “Sam is a beer entrepreneur fermenting the rise of a post-industrial frontier with opportunity galore. Sam is building on the Pride of Cleveland.”The BYO Nano Podcast Episode 63  is sponsored by:FermentisHow can you make your beer stand out? While it is rewarding and exciting to own a small brewery, there is also a lot of worry that comes with it. Over time things can snowball, accumulate, and become a burden. Regular check-ins on mental health are important, and no matter who you are in the brewing space, or your role, taking care of yourself is paramount. That's the focus on this episode. Everyone is feeling the stress these days. From outside influences to internal worry, everyone is carrying a lot of weight on their shoulders. If you're running a small business, the worry of your staff is on you as well. While there are many things in our control, there are also a lot of things that are simply not easily dealt with. Finding balance from within and managing what you can is important to mental health. Being pulled in a dozen different directions all at once rarely brings calm, but by focusing on what you can control and finding the moments - or longer - to take a break adds up to a better human experience. Of course there are other considerations to mental health in the beer space, and other challenges to navigate. To get a better understanding on what is available out there and how to best access it, we're pleased to be joined by J Jackson-Beckham, the Director of Member Resources for the Brewers Association, better known in the industry as Dr. J.A former professor of Communication Studies, Dr. J dedicated her academic career to the study of American beer. She is an author, speaker, vocal advocate for the craft beverage community, homebrewer, and Certified Cicerone. In 2018, Dr. J was named the Brewers Association's first-ever Diversity Ambassador. In 2020, she was named Imbibe Magazine's Beer Person of the Year. Today, she helps craft beverage organizations develop practices that drive success, build communities, and empower individuals as the Brewers Association Director of Member Resources. The BYO Nano Podcast Episode 62  is sponsored by:RahrBSG / Gambrinus IPA MaltGambrinus IPA Malt possesses an elusive color falling between very pale pilsner and golden pale ale malt. Growing season is in full swing across North America and on this episode we check in with two farmers who are brewing and will discuss what goes into making beers with ingredients grown from their own land. There is a bit of romanticism that goes into being a farmer. That and a lot of hard work. Add on a brewing career and there's suddenly a lot more to attend to. But there are also rewards. On this show listen in as two farmers who are also brewers talk about the ups and downs, how to read the land, and how to make flavorful beers with the current bounty. GuestsJacob Pressy of Humboldt Regeneration Brewery & Farm earned his BS in Environmental Science with a focus on Soil Science and Alternative Agriculture and a Minor in Botany with a focus on Mycology from Humboldt State University in 2010. His experiences living in Humboldt County combined with his educational path led him to be extremely passionate about Permaculture and regenerative agriculture. Working in the wine industry when he was younger gave him a strong interest in fermentation as well as the machinery involved which eventually lead him to working as the Assistant Brewer for Eel River Brewing Co from 2001-2009.After putting his two passions together, Humboldt Regeneration was born with a strong mission to promote regenerative land management practices using beer as a tool to reach the general public. The brewery opened in 2012 with a home-built 1bbl brew system and only a few tanks. He now operates on an artistic and efficient custom 2bbl, 4 vessel system nano-production system built by Jacob and a well known custom stainless steel fabricator who has been welding for over 60 years. The goal for Humboldt Regeneration Brewery & Farm is to work toward becoming a carbon-positive operation while spreading the word about permaculture and regenerative agriculture.Craig Deitz of Big Barn Brewery and Bodacious Berries Fruits and Brews. After a 32 years as a public school teacher, teaching biology, chemistry and physical sciences, As well as coaching track and cross-country. Deitz decided to put his homebrewing passion - a hobby he had enjoyed since the 1990s to professional use. He grew up on a farm, where the family grew fruits like cherries, peaches and applesThe brewery earned its license in 2012 and his initial goal was to grow and use everything in his beer that came from the farm.  Originally they grew five acres of malting barley in the first year but quickly realized the challenges that would entail actually malting their own grain. But they do have a couple acres of hops that they harvest and pelletize for their  beer. And they grow a variety of fruits that also make an appearance in the beers. The BYO Nano Podcast Episode 55  is sponsored by:Siebel InstituteIf you are ready to build your career in the brewing industry, the courses and programs from Siebel Institute of Technology and World Brewing Academy will give you the online or on-campus training you need. Events are a great way to bring regulars and new comers into your taproom. On this episode we talkk with three brewers who are working to bring new and exciting experiences to their breweries. From celebrations around new events, to yoga, live music, crafts, and working with charities, events are commonplace again four years since the start of the COVID 19 Pandemic. This episode explores what works, what doesn't and how can nano breweries reach new customers while keeping the existing ones. Brian Kulbacki is a 2012 Graduate of the American Brewers Guild Brewing School, where he took their Intensive Brewing Science & Engineering course for Breweries in Planning. Prior to that he graduated from Boston College with a double major in Marketing & Finance.  He has worked in marketing for the New England Patriots/Revolution and the Lakewood BlueClaws, as well as finance for Major League Baseball and Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines. He has also managed operations for a family business. Brian founded Departed Soles Brewing Company in 2014, which in 2015 opened its doors to become the first brewery in Jersey City, New Jersey since prohibition, and the first brewery on the east coast to craft gluten free beer in dedicated equipment, along with traditional glutenous beers. The brewery has won medals at GABF, the World Beer Cup, and Best of Craft Beer Awards, among others. The brewery is now run by Brian's dog, Bogan.Greg Fagen is Co-Founder of Heroes Brewing Company in Rochester, NY. As an avid home brewer, Greg honed his skills and passion for craft beer. He's won 10 medals as an amateur while teaming with fellow beer creators in their garages. Heroes Brewing Company opened in December 2020 after a long 6 year pilgrimage to make the  dream of owning a commercial brewery come true. Our is unique in that we partner with local charities and non-profit organizations for every beer we make and we make a donation to them from the sale of canned products. To date we have partnered with over 80 organizations who have benefited from the sale of more than 50,000 cans. Our philosophy is simple: Heroes don't look like they used to. They look like you do. Steven Fuller has been owner of Wackadoo Brewing in Colorado for the last four years. He joined the Army at 17-year-old and spent 14 years as an active duty infantryman and 5 years as a sniper. He completed 3 tours in Iraq, was a Drill sergeant for 3 years, and now says his brewery is the only one in America to be a part of a VFW, that would be VFW 6461 in fountain Colorado. The brewery also donates 100% of its profits every month to 11 different Veteran nonprofits or Veteran service organizations.A word on content. There are multiple ways to build a community around your brewery, and one way is through membership clubs and offering your beer through community supported agriculture-type programs. Two brewers embracing that model are here to discuss their initiatives. January and February can be tough months for brewery taprooms. The collective societal hangover both on the waistline and wallet looms large. It can make running a small brewery even more difficult. Water is our topic this month. From how a proper education can help you better understand beer's most important ingredient, to how to properly treat it for your recipes. Then we'll discuss its other uses around the brewhouse and best practices for effluent. Despite being necessary for life and all around us, water can often be overlooked in breweries. It is hard to explain to drinkers, and is often taken for granted when we simply turn on a tap or valve. However, having a deeper understanding of this compound helps make better beer, and by being conversant can help customers forge a deeper appreciation to the craft. This episode features two guests: John Palmer, the noted author How to Brew: Everything You Need to Know to Brew Great Beer Every Time (2017), and co-author of both Brewing Classic Styles (2007), and Water: A Comprehensive Guide for Brewers (2013) from Brewers Publications. And Steve Parkes the  owner and lead instructor of the Director of the American Brewers Guild in Middlebury, Vermont. He's also the owner and brewer of Drop In Brewery and a sought-after educator and expert on beer styles and history. The BYO Nano Podcast Episode 41 is sponsored by:Fermentis Yeast is an incredible living micro-organism! On this episode of the BYO Nano Podcast we're talking about best practices and advice for someone who wants to take over a small, existing brewery. The idea came from a listener who wrote: “I'm someone who is overwhelmed by the non-beer aspects of starting a taproom from scratch - legal, regulatory, architectural design and layout, branding, marketing, and a blank sheet of paper. I've explored a couple of taprooms and small brewpubs for sale. What's a smart way to go about this?” That's a jumping off point and our panel will start with the from scratch aspect then transition into what it takes to acquire an existing brewery. The lessons shared are also applicable to someone just starting out as well.   The panel includes: Jon Carpenter who his career as a summer brewing intern at Drakes Brewing Co in 2002 while attending UC Davis, studying Brewing Science. After graduating with a BS in Food Science & Technology (Brewing Emphasis) and a BA in Political Science in 2005, he went on to work for Anheuser-Busch in their Research Pilot Brewery. From there he went onto Dogfish Head, and then to Golden Road followed by Alchemy and Science, the Boston Beer collection of breweries. Today he works at Opensō Consulting, Independent Brewery and Craft Beverage Consulting firm. Michael Brewer, the president of Alcoholic Beverage Consulting Service, a leading alcoholic beverage licensing firm.  Alcoholic Beverage Consulting Service represents numerous alcoholic beverage licensees in all segments of the alcohol industry. Brewer was a regulatory auditor for the United States Custom Service and holds a Master's degree in accounting from San Diego State University.  And Matthew McLaughlin,  founder of McLaughlin, PC, a boutique commercial law firm specializing in the beverage industry. He has represented breweries and distilleries throughout the United States for nearly 20 years advising clients on business entity formation, ownership structure, startup financing and expansion financing, federal and state regulatory matters, and intellectual property.  Matthew has also served as the executive director of the Mississippi Brewers Guild and was instrumental in the passage of House Bill 1322, a bill that expanded retail sales opportunities for breweries in Mississippi and fundamentally changed Mississippi's brewpub laws.  In April 2017 at the Brewers Association's annual Craft Brewers Conference, Matthew received the F.X. In proof that some of the most interesting things in American craft beer are happening on the small scale, we'll start off this month with a brewery profile on Kulturhaus, a 5-barrel brewhouse in Pismo Beach where they are not only making beers, but fermenting pickles, sauerkraut, and vegetables to extoll the virtues of microbes. The founders Jennifer Harris and Eric Kirchner will join me for a conversation. Then we'll spotlight hops. As the growing season is well underway and harvest in in sights Gayle Goschie of Goschie Farms in Oregon will join me to talk about the weather, the outlook, what continues to grow well and what she has her eye on. The BYO Nano Podcast Episode 30 is sponsored by:Yakima Chief Hops  Yakima Chief Hops has been building a robust portfolio of their Cryo Hops® brand products for the past five years. To help with that motivation we're talking with Ryan Wheaton at Craft Brew Creative about collaboration inside and outside of beer, focusing on your marketing plan, and ways to shake things up. After that our brewer profile heads to Underground Beer Lab in East Syracuse, New York. We hope you had a chance to watch, listen, or participate in BYO's NanoCon held earlier this month. For host John Holl it was great fun to moderate two panels with industry experts, though leaders, and brewers. In addition to their own thoughts and insight we had a lot of great questions and feedback from conference participants, especially during our small brewer panel. For this episode, our last of 2021, Holl wanted to bring three brewers together to talk about shared experiences, how they faced adversity and got through it, and to see what their outlook for 2022 might hold. We cover everything from social media plans, to yeast and hops, customer service, retail, packaging, and more.  For you small brewers putting in the hard work day in and day out it can be hard to get outside of your four walls. So hearing from other brewers or owners in podcast form might help a bit to show there are other people in similar situations. Their perspective might help you with insight into your own nano brewery. Our end of the year panelists are : Sara Ridgel of Policy Kings Brewery, she and her husband Dre are working to waking up the pallets of their Community through creative and innovative sessionable style beers. The opened in 2018 and  she says the brewery's main goal is to always deliver a crushable beer. Eric Christensen is a 26 year veteran of the Coast Guard and started Gypsy Brewing Company with his wife, Heather, in May 2017.  The two-barrel production only brewery serves local clientele in Southern Maryland through draft accounts, markets, and liquor stores. andRiker Wikoff is a co-founder of Red Clover Ale Co. Today I speak with Dave Warnock of Dying Out Loud, a speaking tour that he is on which I manage! Dave is a former pastor and now atheist. He became zealous in his teen years during the Jesus Freak movement of the late 60’s. He left religion about 8 years ago and became an atheist. His marriage ended due to this departure from the faith and 2 of his 3 children cut off communication with him. He connected with The Clergy Project, an organization that provides resources to former and current clergy who no longer believe in the faith. Through that organization, he met Cass Midgley who also lived in Nashville. The two became quick friends. And through Cass’s podcast, Everyone’s Agnostic, my paths eventually crossed those of Dave Warnock as well. I met him at the Everyone’s Agnostic retreat in 2018 but it was in March of 2019 when I visited Nashville to see Cass that I started paying more attention to this guy. He had been diagnosed just a week before with ALS, an ugly, terminal disease. I have a lot of issues around death, most I blame on Christianity’s denial of death. Dave wasn’t afraid of death. He was just incredibly disappointed that his time alive would be shorter than he anticipated. He spoke with me, with Cass, with everyone in their Nashville community that week about his reaction to his diagnosis. He didn’t shy away from sharing how he felt. He didn’t shame others for asking questions, for being speechless, for crying more than he was. He was setting the type of secular precedent around dying that I had never witnessed before and I was hooked. Knowing how many secular contacts I had in the podcasting world, I asked Dave if he’d like to talk about his diagnosis and his reaction to it on public platforms. He said, sure darlin’. And so it began. We initially called it, “Dave’s Last Ride”, but it quickly morphed into “Dying Out Loud”. We were surprised by the response of those who heard his story. I reached out to more and more platforms and now, 9 months later, Dave has been on The Atheist Experience, The Thinking Atheist, and The Scathing Atheist. He has plans to travel the nation and the world next year, speaking at NanoCon and the Conference on Religious Trauma. Dave and I have been working closely these last 9 months, just following the demand for his story that is being provoked from the community. Dave has told his story again and again and again in all this time, constantly reaching a new audience. So when we had an evening to ourselves in Madison, Wisconsin, I asked if I could interview him for my show, but I demanded that we not talk about the same old, same old that you could hear from any other interview. I want you to know Dave like I do. It’s such a pain in my ass and gives me such a hard time. He tells the worst jokes. He makes me laugh. He makes me feel loved. He’s a goof and I love him. With this interview, I hope you can get to know Dave a little better as the weird and wonderful guy that he is. Love you, Dave. So happy to be on this journey with you.****Now that we’ve begun to process our history with toxic religion, we seek to regain autonomy over our minds and bodies from residual narratives, whether cultural or religious; while working towards respecting and empowering the autonomy of others. Bart Campolo is the host of Humanize Me, a podcast more than 400 episodes in the making. He's also the author of Why I Left/Why I Stayed, a discussion on Christianity with his father Tony. I also saw him tear up the stage at Nanocon last weekend. Let's talk about how much of a conference you miss when you are performing, traveling the atheist/secular circuit, being a humanist chaplain and how to create that local secular group of your dreams. Cass Midgley talks with Marissa Alexa McCool. Bob was out of town for this taping. This episode is a bit of detour from our regular format. Marissa doesn't have a personal deconversion from faith story, but she does have a gender conversion story that religions generally oppose. I call this episode, much like episode 60 with Callie Wright, back in the summer of 2015, a beginner class in Trans 101. I support this kind of education because in order to be a part of the solution and not the problem we need to seek to understand, stretch out our imaginations, and expose our blind spots regarding these our fellow human beings, and of course, say yes to what is. Also, we ex-Christians can relate to this: one can only lie about who one is for so long before going crazy. Author Ellen Wittlinger is quoted as saying, “People change lots of other personal things all the time. They dye their hair and diet themselves to near death. They take steroids to build muscles and get breast implants and nose jobs so they resemble their favorite movie stars. They change names and majors and jobs and husbands and wives. They change religions and political parties. They move across the country or the world — even change nationalities. Why is gender the one sacred thing we aren't supposed to change? Who made that rule?” Our guest today, Marissa Alexa McCool, is 32, a podcaster, author, performer, speaker, and an LGBT rights/atheist activist. She's a trans woman, married, partnered, and a parent. Born in Akron, Ohio and currently residing in Saint Paul, Minnesota with her family, she graduated the University of Pennsylvania in 2017 with 3 degrees: English, Cinema and Media Studies, and Anthropology, while also studying theatre, Shakespeare, and communication theory. Within the atheist community, she's spoken at Lehigh Valley Humanists, Minnesota Atheists, Skepticon 10, NaNoCon 3, and several others.Marissa won a 2014 Keystone Award for Excellence in Journalism, a 2015 audience choice award at the Hershey Student Film Festival for a short film, and co-founded The Trans Podcaster Visibility Initiative with Callie Wright in 2017. She blends her theatrical background and fiery passion for atheism, humanist and secular values, and intersectionality. Marissa mentions a video by Steve Shives on this trans subject and I feature a 5 minute excerpt within the conversation. We taped this conversation on March 24th, 2018.   We interview people you don’t know, about a subject no one wants to talk about. We hope to encourage people in the process of deconstructing their faith and help curb the loneliness that accompanies it. We think the world is a better place when more people live by sight, not by faith. Please subscribe to our podcast, and leave a review wherever you listen to podcasts. Also, we offer these podcasts freely. And your support truly makes a difference. You can support us monetarily in two easy ways: you can pledge a monthly donation through Patreon. that’s www.patreon.com/eapodcast,  or leave a lump-sum donation through PayPal at our website, www.everyonesagnostic.com. Credits:"Towering Mountain of Ignorance" intro by Hank Green https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w3v3S82TuxU Intro bumper "Never Know" by Jack Johnson Thank you for listening. We talk about their relaunch and NaNoCon. But mostly there was a just a bunch of pointless rambling. Although it was mostly just us shooting the shit, it is a bit of a break from the weightier subjects that we here everyday on the news. Welcome back to The Podunk Polymath Podcast! This week on the pre-ramble I talk about two upcoming conferences I am attending : NaNoCon and Secular Social Justice. NaNoCon is March 17th in Nashville at Glencliff High School. Tickets are $15 until March 1st and $20 thereafter. I will be on the podcasters panel again this year, so that's even more of an incentive to attend. Secular Social Justice is in Washington, DC at the All Souls Unitarian Church. The cost of that one is $25. I hope to see y'all at one or both conferences! On the palaver I speak with Ingrid from Chicago, a trans woman who has been unhoused in the past and may soon be again. We talk about how she became unhoused, her experiences, her struggles, and her hopes. She is looking at the possibility of being unhoused again in the near future, but I hope things will change and that this will not happen. It is a difficult but important discussion, mostly because it seems that being unhoused is an issue that too many people try ignore, I think mainly because we are told that being unhoused is shameful but also people are afraid that they may be in that situation one day. I hope y'all gain some insight from this. I know I did. Music by Dot Dot Dash, cdbaby.com/cd/dotdotdash

On the pre-ramble, I talk about my trip to Cincinnati and my pilgrimage to find some information and the grave of show patronus Charles Chilton Moore. I got to see some cool people, such as Patrick and Jenica Crail; Big Bang Betty McGee; and Stephen Chinn. I didn't get to see Adam Collins unfortunately, but I saw him at ReasonCon, so it's all good. I had a great time, and I got to see some cool stuff on my pilgrimage. And it was a beautiful day on top of everything else. On the palaver, I talk to Brian from Scenic City Skeptic. We talk about NanoCon, and how we met there; his show; his deconversion; and his girlfriend's path to atheism. It is a great conversation with plenty of sexy Tennessee accents, and lots of laughs but also serious moments.  In the post-ramble, I read a review that I forgot to read in the pre-ramble, and tell y'all again how awesome it was to see everyone and the thrill of completing my pilgrimage. Welcome to The Triple Po! I don't have much to say on the pre-ramble this week, but I do mention that I was on Not Another Atheist Podcast with Jen and Keith talking about NaNoCon as well some other things. I also mention that I will be on a couple of future episodes of The Atheist in the Trailer Park Podcast with Tucker Drake. I am not sure when they will be released, but I will make sure to post on the social medias when they do. Lastly, I briefly mention that former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn has asked for immunity to testify before Congress about the Trump's administration ties to Russia. Hopefully, this will lead to impeachment, though it's probably unlikely. Oh, and the Federal Judge in Hawaii continued the stay regarding the enforcement of Trump's new and improved Muslim ban, which of course is awesome news.  For the palaver I have co-host of The Scathing Atheist, God Awful Movies, and Skepticrat Noah Lugeons on to talk about the Christian movie industry and how his show mercilessly satirizes the products of that industry. We also talk about the history and current state of the industry and perhaps the disturbing future. It was a great conversation and I am really glad Noah came on to speak with me.  Music by Dot Dot Dash, cdbaby.com/cd/dotdotdash

Thanks for stopping by and checking out this installment of TPPP! This week in the pre-ramble, I give a little review of the awesomeness that was NaNoCon 2o17. I had a great time, reconnected with people, met a lot of new people, and consumed copious amounts of beer. It was a beautiful day for it, and there was a bonfire the night before and an after party downtown that topped everything off nicely. A big thanks to the organizers for putting this together, and hopefully it will be even bigger and better next year! For the palaver I talk to Robert and Amy over at Secular Yakking. We talk about their show, the Mr. Potter award, and their natural ability to yak at each other. We also talk about Robert's side project, The Original Motto Project, which is trying to get In God We Trust removed from government property and replaced with the original motto, 'E Pluribus Unum' (Out of many, one). As if that weren't enough, these two are involved with Camp Quest, and their children were campers and are now about to be counselors. There's also yakking about Trump, Northern apathy and Southern enthusiasm for secular issues, ignorance and our shared status as SJWs. There's a lot of yakking on this week's episode, but hopefully y'all will find it entertaining! Music by Dot Dot Dash, cdbaby.com/cd/dotdotdash

With such long breaks in between episodes these days, we have too much to talk about when we get together but sometimes only an hour to shoot the shit and chat it up. What's most important about this episode is that you find out how you can see Jenn on Saturday, March 18th at NaNoCon. Yes, the amazing and opinionated, misplaced New Yorker is speaking at the Nashvile Nones Convention (NaNoCon get it?) We wrap up our discussion on punching Richard Spencer in the facehole, as well as shed some light on a few issues we feel are overlooked far too often.   LINKS https://nashvillenones.com/workshops-panels/ http://www.whitewolfpack.com/2017/03/largest-march-for-native-rights-in-dc.html   EDIT: I have adjusted the volumes, and cannot apologize enough for that lapse in judgement. Greetings and welcome to another scintillating episode of The Podunk Polymath Podcast! This is a bit of a special episode, because for only the second time on the podcast I have a guest for the pre-ramble and the palaver! Zach Law of Zachrilege Cast joins me firstly on the pre-ramble as we talk about the GOP's newly unveiled health care plan and our takes on its merits (spoiler : we think it sucks)! I also announce a new patron, and a very special one at that : The badass host of Inciting Incident Podcast, as well as author and generally awesome human being, Marissa McCool! I also mention once again that NaNoCon is starting in less than a week, and how y'all better get your tickets now before they sell out! The fun with Zach continues on the palaver, where we talk about his podcast, his personal views, our love of beer, as well as his penchant for belching during interviews. It's a boozy conversation between two friends, and I had a lot of fun talking to him. It's a bit of a reprieve from the more serious subjects the show generally covers, and I think we all could use it during these dark days. Enjoy! Music by Dot Dot Dash, cdbaby.com/cd/dotdotdash

Welcome to another episode of the Triple Po! On the pre-ramble this week, I talk about how some redneck Trump supporter at a rally in Nashville thought it would be an awesome idea to wear t-shirt that extolled the virtues of slavery. Someone got a picture of this guy, and Facebook did its thing and found out who it was. Needless to say, the vast majority of commenters were not amused. I also remind my listeners of the impending approach of NaNoCon 2017. It will be coming March 18th, and tickets will are $15 up until the day of the event, and $20 at the door, or until all the tickets sell out. Don't wait and miss out on the greatest secular event in Middle Tennessee! On the palaver I speak to writer and activist Jessica Xiao. We talk about intersectional feminism, as well a peripheral issues such as racism, White privilege, the difficulty of getting people to take criticism, and so much more. Jessica is a tireless advocate for social justice, and she is a well-spring of knowledge. She may think she rambles, but her mind is so full of knowledge that it's no wonder she wants to share it with everyone! I hope you learn as much as I did! It's time for another exciting episode of The Podunk Polymath Podcast! This week on the pre-ramble, I talk about two Donald Trump conferences : One in which he rambles and calls the press the 'enemy of the American People', and one in which he claims that some sort of terrorist incident occurred in Sweden, when nothing in fact happened at all. I also talk about Milo's appearance on Real Time with Bill Maher, and how Larry Wilmore is my hero. I also mention how Trav Mamone recorded a promo for NaNoCon 2017, and how awesome he is for doing so! On the palaver this week, I talk to Ari Stillman, William Ferguson, and Katie Quesnel about their experiences and journeys being nonbinary. We talk about the struggles they face; how and when they became aware they were 'different'; the extent to which they are 'out'; and what cis people can do to help the non-binary community. This was a learning experience for me, and I hope you will learn as much as I did, or, if you are non-binary yourself, that you realize that you are not alone.  Music by Dot Dot Dash, cdbaby.com/cd/dotdotdash

Cass Midgley and Dr. Bob Pondillo interview Bill Finley. Bill was a latch-key kid that took matters into his own hands as a senior in high school to map his path through Bible college and 13 years of service in the Salvation Army. But his mind and heart were too broad for the narrow path of Christianity, or as he puts it as an arm-chair linguist: "I needed another language." Here in Nashville on Saturday, March 18th, we're hosting a one day convention called the Nashville Nones Convention, or NaNoCon. This is our second annual gathering. You can find more information at nashvillenones.com. Tickets are just $15 if you register before March 12th and only $20 at the door. Matt Dillahunty is our key note speaker and they'll be breakout workshops. The second event is ReasonCon 3, being held the weekend of April 21st and 22nd in Hickory NC. This conference puts an emphasis on atheist podcasts and the communities that build around them. Tickets range from $45 to $180. For more information go to reasonnc.com. In addition, I want to plug two medias that truly illustrate what it means to be a yes-sayer. The novel by Alain de Botton, "The Course of Love," and the movie, "Arrival," starring Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner. Alain de Botton's "The Course of Love" follows a young couple, Rabih and Kirsten, for around 30 years from courtship to mid-life. Francine Prose, of the Guardian calls the novel "a sympathetic account of the relationship that begins only after the besotted courtship has ended. Having fallen deeply in love, the couple “will marry, they will suffer, they will frequently worry about money, they will have a girl first, then a boy, one of them will have an affair, there will be passages of boredom, they’ll sometimes want to murder one another and on a few occasions to kill themselves. This will be the real love story.” Journalist Michelle Newton writes, "De Botton argues we are all crazy and broken; that is the human condition. I would argue that the culture we live in is also in need of major repair as it is riddled with anxiety. No wonder the promise of escape via the wings of love is appealing. A strong dose of reality is needed to ensure the long-lasting survival of love. De Botton argues it is a skill to be learnt over time. I am no expert on love, but that is just the point. No one is." De Botton invites us to put away our fairy tale expectations of what romance should look like and do the hard work of cohabitating with another person just as crazy as us, with just a different brand of crazy. The lie that the grass is greener continues to pull us out of our present reality into a delusional dream-state that says no to what is. I'm convinced that most couples in the world bear some measure of resentment when their partner is praised by others, thinking to themselves, "if you only knew him/her like I do, you wouldn't think so highly of them."  Obviously, this advice only applies to couples who are not in a perilous relationship where they're safety and well-being are threatened. But barring that, being a yes-sayer means deciding if you want your pursuit of companionship to divest itself over and over again with new partners, looking for mr or mrs right? Or if the person laying next to you snoring or drooling or farting suffice for the task? And lastly, the movie, "Arrival."  “Arrival” is not your typical alien movie. This film has tremendous depth and a message that blew my mind. Amy Adam’s character, Louise, is a Professor of Linguistics and is called on to help communicate with aliens from outer space who have arrived on earth. As she grows more intimate with the aliens, they bestow on her, through dream-like visions, an ability to transcend time by seeing the future. What she does with this information and how she reacts to it emerges as the ultimate message of this movie cloaked in an alien invasion context. What I’m about to say could be considered a spoiler, but I think your experience with this movie will be enhanced by understanding the twist at the end as you watch it from the beginning. Louise is able to see her future self marry the scientist she’s working next to at ground zero, see the daughter that they bear, and see her die as a pre-teen with some kind of cancer. AND SHE CHOOSES TO FOLLOW THAT PATH ANYWAY. Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote, “Life’s a journey, not a destination.” To quote movie critic, Jarrod Canfield: “Arrival is a thoughtful adaptation of that adage. Arrival introduces us to a new prism by which we can better view our own lives. There is no salvation in this vantage point, nor protection from death. Instead, Arrival asks a simple question: if you could view your life as an image, a story told in one nonlinear and infinite symbol, would you change it? Would you live it anyway? Louise embraces life for all of its myriad victories and losses, knowing that the journey is worth far more than the final destination.” This is yes-saying. Looking the cruelty and absurdity of life in the face and walking into it anyway. Nietzsche’s formula for human greatness is Amor Fati, latin for love of fate—not wanting anything to be different. No-sayers look at their lives and they say NO, they want things to be different, they puff and pout over things for which they have no control. We taped this conversation on January 21st, 2017.
