In the wise, lyrical book, Braiding Sweet Grass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teachings of Plants, by Robin Wall Kimmerer, the author describes how the children of the Onondaga Nation begin and end their school week. They recite the Thanksgiving Address, or as is known more accurately in the Onondaga language, Words That Come Before All Else. The following text is an excerpt from this beautiful book. The moon and I have a relationship, but there is still so much she has yet to share with me. And my garden? Each year, there are lessons to be harvested from the great losses, unexpected surprises, and joyful moments of gratitude that come with tending to one’s own plants. Joining me today on the Belonging Podcast is Erin Duffy Osswald. Erin is a certified Earth Medicine Practitioner and hedgewitch (which she defines in this episode) living in the northern lands of Great Falls, Montana. She has lived most of her life guided by Grandmother Moon, making it a devotional practice she incorporates into everything from the mundane to the deeply magical. Winter solstice is upon us. Our seasonal wheel turns once again into a new season marked by the path of the sun and the moon. It is said that Grandfather Sun starts his return to Grandmother Moon. Meet Craig Standing Bear, Storyteller, flute player, moccasin maker tell a story for our Winter time. Winter in indigenous tribal life here in America was a time to fix and mend, a time for stories. The Storyteller was valued and held a place of esteem. After all, he had the news, the gossip, and the tales to pass along from one tribe to the next.

Independence, Kansas author Marilyn Johnson, writing under the pen name Sue Snow has published her first children's book "Little Magpie and the Wild Pony Hunt. She is currently working on "Little Magpie and Honey," book 2 of Little Magpie and Honey Adventures. This is the story of Little Magpie and her pony Honey. She discovers that her pony is highly intelligent, is a comedian and a jokester. She trains Honey first with verbal and then with hand commands much like we train dogs. Honey plays lots of tricks on the Magpie, Broken Tooth, the medicine man and the entire village during their sessions, all the while snickering in laughter at her clever tricks! Little Magpie then discovers that Honey is attuned to her Dream Walking so she trains her to hear nonverbal commands without hand signals.  The book centers on the two of them working together in two separate events. The first one wins the freedom of a young mother whose toddler was drowning. The warrior Black Snake of the Yellow Bear Eaters rescue the young boy and, as a prize for the rescue, claim the mother for his wife. Little Magpie and Honey trick him by getting him to agree to a wager that the warrior thinks he is sure to win. The second event is a rescue by Little Magpie and Honey of a little girl, Yellow Flower, of the People of the Deer who is kidnapped by the Badger People. After the rescue, the two are pursued through the Painted Mountains by the Badgers, as they try to steal back the child, and by Black Snake who wants revenge on Little Magpie and Honey. As they continue on their dangerous journey, Little Magpie tells Yellow Flower many stories of their People and how Grandmother Moon and Grandfather Sun shaped the mountains and the tall hoodoos they are traveling through. On this episode of Generations, we sit down to hear the wise and deliberate words of Johnnie Bobb, Chief of the Western Shoshone National Council. Johnnie discussed the Shoshone's continued fight to visit their traditional spiritual lands and protect their burial grounds. He discusses the councils roll to uphold Treaty of Ruby Valley (1863), the role of the Elder community and how to continue their native values while fighting to stop the spread of drug abuse and alcoholism within his community.  Johnnie is a spiritual person that we feel will encourage folks to live with respect for Mother Earth, Father Sun, and Grandmother Moon.
