My guest in this episode is hermeticist Rufus Opus, whose work is widely known in occult communities, especially his Red Work Course and his book ‘Seven Spheres', a manual on planetary magic that teaches how to open up gates and provides the working magician with initiatory experiences. Rufus Opus grew up in a mid-western fundamentalist Christian environment where bible studies were naturally part of his childhood. At around age 7-8 he started to realise that Christianity with its passive attitude did not grant him experiences with the divine and that there had to be something different out there. It was when Rufus moved out of his parents' house at age 18 that he dived deep into occultism with ‘The Big Blue Brick', ‘Prometheus Rising' and ‘Twelve Lessons in High Magick' and turned it into a part of his day-to-day life building up strength and discipline. In this latest episode of our show we will discuss if and why the bible belt seems to give birth to magicians in a rather interesting way, and how Rufus who calls himself an ‘amateur explorer' became the well-known and highly-respected expert he is. Indeed, the influences Rufus Opus received on his path were pretty diverse and we talk quite a lot about how they seemed to point him to the system of German Benedictine abbot and polymath Johannes Trithemius based on a 16th century grimoire. Of course, we explore the Trithemius system's particularities and Rufus explains how they led him to his career as a blogger and ultimately to his Red Work Course being created. In our conversation we will explore the reasons why Rufus chose an alchemical way of teaching in the very first place, how ‘Seven Spheres' was born out of it and why ultimately the Red Work Course was put into the hands of his most trusted and qualified former students. Neville Goddard discusses this method of manifestation often in his works and makes the claim that “imagination creates reality”. Want to manifest the world of your dreams and visions? Spend time imaging it and putting yourself physically in that environment as closely as you can. 2. The decision phase. When learning how to manifest, it is imperative that we come to an agreement with the highest part of ourselves and ensure that our manifestation is in alignment with the divine will for our lives. All the while, we must remember that we are the divine expressing itself in a human form. We create and emanate our world and our destiny is one written by our own hand. We must connect with that centerfold part of ourselves deep within and create the world that we came here to build. Want to master the art of manifestation? Learn to connect with your higher self and seek council with all decisions, such that the Great Work can unfold on the Earth and your manifestations can come quickly and with ease. 3. The action phase. Want to manifest something into the physical plane? Learn how to take action towards it every day. Do not let a day go by without moving your energy towards your desires in some way. Want to create a new business? Take action towards that creation each day. While you take these actions, continue with the first two steps and continue to immerse yourself in imagining the experience fulfilled. At the same time, remain in constant council with yourself and ensure your manifestations are in alignment with your divine will. Manifestation does not need to be complicated or difficult. Any time we experience difficulty in a magical operation, it is only because we are not in alignment with ourselves and our true purpose. If you experience a manifestation failing to work out, then ask yourself this: is what you are working to manifest in alignment with your true will? Do you actually WANT what you are working to manifest OR are you just chasing something that does not actually serve your highest good? When we are in alignment with ourselves, manifestation is easy. If we experience struggle, then it is time to surrender to the flow of life and trust the process of the unfolding. Our manifestations are already in the works and created by us and for us since the day we were born.

Damien Echols was one of the West Memphis Three, three teenagers (at the time) who were aged between 16 and 18 and wrongfully accused of murder in what felt like a witch-hunt of a trial. This harrowing story was explored in the documentary Paradise Lost as well as West of Memphis (produced by Peter Jackson and Fran Wals), and in the feature film starring Reese Witherspoon and Colin Firth Devils Knot. Echols, along with Jessie Miskelley Jr., and Jason Baldwin were convicted as teenagers in 1994 for the 1993 murders of three boys in West Memphis, Arkansas. Echols was sentenced to death, Misskelley, Jr. to life imprisonment plus two 20-year sentences, and Jason Baldwin to life imprisonment. During the trial, the prosecution asserted that the juveniles killed the children as part of a Satanic ritual. It's a harrowing case, and the story is stranger than fiction, but with an alchemical lens, and the mindset of the magician, Echols persevered through the adversity, citing his Magickal practice as one of the key elements for surviving such a horrendous experience, and living to tell the tale through his books, work, teachings and embodied wisdom. This conversation is filled with wisdom, as we explore what magick is and isn't, the interconnected nature of all things, and how even through adversity and the dark night of the soul on the hero's journey, the light will always prevail. Damien Echols was wrongfully convicted of murder in the infamous "West Memphis Three" case and spent more than 18 years on death row before his exoneration and release. Now he teaches Western ceremonial magick—the same practice he credits with saving his life in prison. With Sounds True, Damien has published the book High Magick and a practice-oriented audio companion, A Course in High Magick. In this episode of Insights at the Edge, Tami Simon speaks with Damien about magick and how it is meant to "constantly ingest more of divinity." Damien describes two of the central practices of magick—the Middle Pillar and the Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram—and details why they are so foundational to the modality. Damien explains how he first discovered magick while in solitary confinement and details the concept of "will" in relationship to the Buddhist concept of dharma. Finally, Damien and Tami talk about what it means to manifest a "light body" and the overall goal of spiritual liberation through magick. (83 minutes) Tami's Takeaway: Damien Echols is a "current-bearer"—someone who is able to pass to others an experience of boundless light. When I met with Damien in November of 2018 at a launch event for his new book, High Magick, I could tell that something had recently happened to him that had dramatically increased the intensity of this current. In this conversation, he describes how the practices of magick, which he calls "a Western path of enlightenment," brought him to an experience of ego dissolution, which he describes as "experiencing myself as a small handful of sand that someone threw into a tornado." The takeaway: an invitation to let go of any feeling of separateness, enter the abyss, and discover the interconnected light that awaits us.

West Memphis Three member Damien Echols has lived a life none of us can imagine. In the mid 90’s, Damien and two others were wrongly convicted of murder and sentenced to death. He lived on death row for 18 years, 10 of which he was in solitary confinement. The HBO documentary Paradise Lost covered his story and brought the case to the attention of the public. Eventually, forensic evidence proved Damien’s innocence and he was released from prison. After his release, he wrote the NYT bestselling book Life After Death. But how did Damien get through 10 years in solitary confinement? By studying and practicing magick and meditation. In this episode, Kelle says that most Magickal Traditions can be grouped into High Magick and Low Magick. High Magick uses ritual, ceremonial dress, paraphernalia, and memorized wording. Benefits include immersion in the environment, the creation of morphic fields, etc. There is no room for intuitive changes in High Magick. Alternatively, Low Magick is an intuitive and spontaneous experience where the focus is the energetic. Moving into the Hermetic Tradition in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, we will explain High Magick's sophisticated idea, based on ancient Egyptian concepts, of controlling and using dark forces with the Power of Light. Then we will trace the descent of magick, following the Reformation, into the "Faustian School" of the Baroque period with its "Demonic Pacts," finally evolving into full-blown Satanism in the decadent Fin d' Sec le era in late 19th century France. The Hermetic Hour for Thursday, May 26th, 2011 will feature a discussion by host Poke Runyon on Magical equipment and Temple furnishings. Our call in guest will be "The Rustee Wizzerd," who is in the process of painting his room dark blue (as all wizard's should). We will get down to brass tacks (we use 'um), and give you would-be magi the inside info on what you really need, and how to acquire and/or construct your magical tools. I know that this aspect of magick is intimidating for some, while being too important for others. Actually you can do it all without any of our fancy toys, but then High Magick is "The Art of Kings" and kings like to do things in grand style. I think there is something wonderfully quixotic about the middle class suburbanite locked inside his two-car garage in a flowing robe, waving an exotic wand over a smoking altar upon which glows a crystal orb, suspended like a lost world in the midst of endless (dark blue) night. But, before you head out for Home Depot, and Michael's Crafts, listen in and make a list of what you're going to need.
