Women Rewriting the Rules
How to find Happiness at Work when things are Hard

Women Rewriting the Rules

Are you struggling to find happiness at work — or in your professional life? Ashley and Sumi are here with a lot of real talk as they unpack an issue that a lot of us women face. It starts with reevaluating where you want to end up on the corporate ladder in terms of what will provide you with the most happiness. That can lead to questioning whether you are even on the right ladder — which may seem like a luxury of privilege you can't afford when you're providing for your family. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't start enjoying life now, because that is what we are fighting for, now — as our hosts so eloquently put it. It's about equal equality, and equal opportunity, and as women rewrite the rules, they need to do with some enjoyment in their lives! What this looks like is having a squad in the boardroom who can call out when you aren't getting validation for your idea. It's about transition sentences like “Building off of what So and So said” that gets you taken seriously as a woman of color in meetings where a ‘mediocre white male' is hogging the limelight. Developing an authoritative voice, not second-guessing yourself, and taking yourself seriously are some of the tools that we can use to rewrite the rules of how we conduct ourselves, leading to more personal happiness and a resultant shift in the power dynamics. There's much more inside this authoritative episode of Women Rewriting the Rules. It's time to be unapologetically yourself!“It might actually be more enjoyable for me to sort of ‘reset' how I'm thinking about building my career, that would allow me to feel more happiness in that.” ~ Ashley“Loving what you do takes effort.” ~ SumiIn This Episode:How The Great Resignation is affecting women of colorWhere do you want to end up on the corporate ladder? Is this even the right ladder? Throwing the ladder into the trash A McKinsey study that reveals less ‘psychological safety' for women of colorHaving your own squad who will stand up for you in meetings and Building confidence in the future — establishing rapport with your co-workersWhy it's not about learning to speak like the Old Boys Club does — owning your own energyThe Power of Silence — as a responseWhat Sumi learned from Hilary Clinton and BenghaziRetaining a sense of curiosity before life gets too dryFinding joy in the everyday little things — why it's not all about accomplishmentsUnderstanding the choices you always have — is it time to leave? It might be hard to find a more annoying cliché than self-love; it can seem empty and inactionable. And even if you could make it work, I think many of us suspect it would lead to complacent resignation or unbridled narcissism. But there is an enormous amount of evidence that self-love, or as the scientists call it, self-compassion, can make you more effective in reaching your goals as well as lead to better relationships with everybody around you. On today's show, the great meditation teacher Sharon Salzberg will walk us through the idea that love— both self-love and other love— is a skill that can be cultivated with massively positive impacts. Salzberg is a meditation pioneer, world-renowned teacher, and New York Times bestselling author. She is one of the first to bring mindfulness and lovingkindness meditation to mainstream American culture over 45 years ago, inspiring generations of meditation teachers and wellness influencers. Sharon is co-founder of The Insight Meditation Society in Barre, MA, and the author of twelve books, including the New York Times bestseller, Real Happiness, now in its second edition, and her seminal work, Lovingkindness. Her forthcoming release, Real Life: The Journey from Isolation to Openness and Freedom, is set for release in April of 2023 from Flatiron Books. Her podcast, The Metta Hour, has amassed five million downloads and features interviews with thought leaders from the mindfulness movement and beyond. This episode comes out in conjunction with Dan Harris' recent TED Talk on self-love. It was an honor to chat with Oliver Burkeman, columnist for the Guardian, journalist by training, and author of the books: “4000 weeks: time management for mortals and happiness: the antidote for people who can't stand positive thinking.” I have been following Oliver's work for years and had so many questions to ask him, but of course, there were time constraints. So I did my best to ask him about his writing process and the story behind his books, how he practices acceptance, gratitude, and other psychological processes, and his take on some sassy comments he has made over the years. If you haven't read Oliver's books, I highly recommend them! He's one of those writers that do a fantastic job sharing science in a story format, and he does it so elegantly that after you read either a chapter he wrote or his column in the Guardian, you want to read more. This conversation has 3 segments:Oliver's writing process and how he handles interruptions, self-criticism, time anxiety, and comparison thoughts related to writing. How Oliver experiences gratitude, acceptance, and approaches day-to-day challenges.Oliver's take on different topics: the problem with self-help books, what emotions are, the difference between meaning and happinessAnd if you listen to the end, you will hear who Oliver would like to have a scotch and cigar with!As I finish writing this conversation, I remind myself of the last paragraph in Oliver's book, The Four Thousand Weeks:“The average human lifespan is absurd, terrifying, insultingly short. But that isn't a reason for unremitting despair or for living in an anxiety-fueled panic about making the most of your limited time. It's a cause for relief. You get to give up on something that was always impossible - the quest to become the optimized, infinitely capable, emotionally, invincible, fully independent person you're officially supposed to be. Then you get to roll up your sleeves and start work on something that's gloriously possible instead.” See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
