In this episode, Cindy Esliger addresses one of the most frustrating aspects of the lingering gender bias in workplaces. The pervasive assumption that women lack the competence to excel in their roles, based solely on their gender. It's disheartening and unfair, but Cindy explores how women can rise to this challenge.Common challenges faced by women include being treated as outsiders, constantly needing to prove their value, pay scale inequity, and harassment, among others like being treated as assistants or constantly interrupted. Cindy details four lessons she learned the hard way: 1. Work hard to be good at the job, 2. Speak up, 3. Develop a work persona, and 4. Find purpose outside of work.  Cindy talks about all the ways in which gender expectations exist and should be pointedly worked around, such as not being pigeonholed as the coffee or lunch getter, setting boundaries and saying no, and displaying a commanding presence. She advises on how to prepare for criticism and find role models in other women who can offer encouragement and support. And she reminds us that success in breaking the gender barrier doesn't just benefit individual women but the workforce overall. Resources discussed in this episode:Guide to Overcoming BarriersAstronomic AudioConfidence Collective—Contact Cindy Esliger Career Confidence Coaching: website | instagram | facebook | linkedin | email

In this podcast, Garrett Neiman discusses his book titled "Rich White Men: What It Takes to Uproot the Old Boys Club and Transform America." Neiman clarifies that the book is not about villainizing rich white men, but rather examining the concentration of power and resources in society. He believes that if more rich white men made efforts to build relationships across differences and understand the lived experiences of others, their behaviors and attitudes would start to change. Neiman also highlights the struggle of wealthy individuals, especially wealthy white men, in knowing how to effectively use their resources to make a positive impact. Are you struggling to find happiness at work — or in your professional life? Ashley and Sumi are here with a lot of real talk as they unpack an issue that a lot of us women face. It starts with reevaluating where you want to end up on the corporate ladder in terms of what will provide you with the most happiness. That can lead to questioning whether you are even on the right ladder — which may seem like a luxury of privilege you can't afford when you're providing for your family. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't start enjoying life now, because that is what we are fighting for, now — as our hosts so eloquently put it. It's about equal equality, and equal opportunity, and as women rewrite the rules, they need to do with some enjoyment in their lives! What this looks like is having a squad in the boardroom who can call out when you aren't getting validation for your idea. It's about transition sentences like “Building off of what So and So said” that gets you taken seriously as a woman of color in meetings where a ‘mediocre white male' is hogging the limelight. Developing an authoritative voice, not second-guessing yourself, and taking yourself seriously are some of the tools that we can use to rewrite the rules of how we conduct ourselves, leading to more personal happiness and a resultant shift in the power dynamics. There's much more inside this authoritative episode of Women Rewriting the Rules. It's time to be unapologetically yourself!“It might actually be more enjoyable for me to sort of ‘reset' how I'm thinking about building my career, that would allow me to feel more happiness in that.” ~ Ashley“Loving what you do takes effort.” ~ SumiIn This Episode:How The Great Resignation is affecting women of colorWhere do you want to end up on the corporate ladder? Is this even the right ladder? This week we speak to the two legendary women behind the fantastic new podcast – Old Boys Club – all about breaking down Australian politics and making it accessible and interesting for people who are usually overlooked by the conversation. We talked about the challenges of reporting on politics as women in a male dominated field, gender disparity at play in both politics and journalism and took a deep dive into a story that has stuck with us as one of the biggest political issues at the moment. Jussy's recommendation for the week was the Friends Reunion Special on Binge. Chole recommended a podcast called Pseudocide – all about people who faked their own deaths! ABC-TV, HULU ~ He's promoted athletes & celebrities: Stevie Wonder, Dionne Warwick, Tony Bennett, BB King, Loretta Lynn, James Brown, Run DMC, Queen Latifah, Snoop Dogg & more. Born and raised in New York City’s Harlem, educated at Delaware's Wilmington University (where he remains an adjunct business professor) Dave Wooley rose to prominence as the only Black man in the country to be awarded exclusive paid-per-view and closed-circuit television broadcasting rights to the Mike Tyson vs Michael Spinks "Once And For All" mega, fight - the largest fight in history at the time grossing over $70 million dollars.  For people in the fields of sports, entertainment and event management, they know that only titans operate at that level. This will be one of many facets covered in the upcoming ABC-TV documentary, “Mike Tyson: The Knockout” (airing as a two-part series on Tuesday, May 25th, 2021 and Tuesday, June 1st, 2021 -both nights at 8 pm EST). The documentary will be available on Hulu the day after each broadcast. "People had not seen anyone like Mike Tyson.  He was charismatic, with his talents.  He embodied power and that is what is emblematic of what every man thought it meant to be a man. He was captivating," Wooley said. As to why Tyson, along with Michael Jordan and Michael Jackson, became so iconic in the late 80's, Wooley – “Everybody wanted to be like Mike.  You just had to decide which Mike you wanted to be! Mike was from the projects in the Brooklyn NY’s Brownsville area (we called it Blacksville) and he had to fight. He did in the ring what he had to do in the streets--dominate!  He had to prove that his high-pitched voice didn't mean he could be tested.  He was fearless." When Wooley wanted to get into the world of boxing event promotion, it wasn't easy.  The rights to these events could garner in the tens of millions of dollars and that world was closed to anyone outside of the "Old Boys Club."  Young, Black and self-assured, Dave made moves and positioned himself to win. "The process was different by state and sometimes by major city,” Wooley explained. “I wondered if I could buy an entire state, but I was told I had no experience.  Concerts and fights were two different things.  Concerts happened one at a time but a closed-circuit fight could be at multiple sites at the same time.  So I learned how to ‘play the game’, so to speak -  I got my letter of credit and soon I had parts of the state of Virginia and later, I had the entire state of Virginia and Delaware." It was that level of access and connection that placed Wooley and Tyson in the same room, for press conferences and special events.  Wooley went on to produce major events and has worked with music legend Dionne Warwick on various projects, including being the co-author of her autobiography. Wooley is the producer and co-director of a new all-star documentary based on the life of Warwick. In the sports world, he conceived and was the sole producer and promoter of the "Clash of The Legends". The historical exclusive pay-per-view event brought NBA Legends, Julius "Dr. J'' Erving and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar together, along with other NBA superstars, together for One on One competitive basketball contests. And in 2020, he was named Talent/Content Advisor for the Biden/Harris Presidential Inaugural Committee. But Wooley’s greatest creations have been his two amazing daughters--Veda and Davina.  Veda is a practicing attorney and Davina received her M.S. in Computer Science from Georgia Tech, one of the nation's most respected schools.  He raised them while he was raising the bar in the worlds of sports, entertainment and producing events, and he did so as their single custodial parent. The Story of David Freeman Wooley is one that must be told to generations to come but that is needed for today's entrepreneur.   His 35 years of experience have placed him on camera for "Mike Tyson: The Knockout". That along with his steely and stellar determination is partly why he is so noted and noticeable in the documentary.  "It is going to be huge!” exclaims Wooley.  “On network television, this is going to reach the world. This is a part of the great American Story and everybody loves a happy ending.  Watching Mike succeed and make a comeback like he has shown that we can all get knocked down and if we fight hard enough, we can get back up.” © 2021 Building Abundant Success!! 2021 All Rights Reserved Join Me on ~ iHeart Radio @ https://tinyurl.com/iHeartBAS Spot Me on Spotify: https://tinyurl.com/yxuy23ba

Hello lovely listeners, Strap in for another big news week on Culture Club. We start off with a catch up on Jasmine’s holiday before obsessing (like the rest of the internet) over Troye Sivan’s Melbourne home featured in Architectural Digest. A number of news sites got caught out by a Chaser prank who created a fake petition to change the name of Fairy Bread. This sparks a conversation around the media industry’s constant churning machine. In another instance of cis-men getting involved where they shouldn’t, German company Pinky Gloves received a bunch of backlash over their patronising period gloves. We discuss why we think they did this (when no one asked) and if there’s even a need for this product on the market. We will point out that at times we use the term ‘women’ synonymously with people who menstruate in this segment. We recognise that not only women menstruate.  After this chat we move on to a breakdown of the TikTok Tramp Stamps drama. The band received huge criticism over their “fake” aesthetics, lyrics and old tweets.Through this drama we discuss what the term ‘industry plant’ actually is and why it has roots in sexism and nepotism.Indigenous social enterprise, Clothing the Gap, has received (another) cease and desist letter recently from American retailer The Gap and now have to change their name. Please support the amazing work they do by buying their old stock before they fully rebrand to Clothing The Gaps.  Jas is recommending new political podcast, Old Boys Club, by journalists Justine Landis-Hanley and Matilda Bosley and Maggie recommends The Weekend Briefing with Benjamin Law by The Briefing. Our jingle, editing and production is by India Raine. The ”I hung up on Warren Buffett” Podcast by Wolfpack Research

In this episode we travel across the pond to chat with internationally renowned forensic accountant and author Steven Clapham. Steven talks to us about life as a sell-side analyst, his due diligence work when vetting a company, and his book “The Smart Money Method.” When he's not providing research for private clients, Stephen is educating the next generation of analysts with his online investment research and analysis training course - Behind the Balance Sheet. Sit back, have a drink, and enjoy a conversation with Dan and The Pack as they swap stories with award-winning forensic accountant Stephen Clapham. • 3:55 – Have you ever wondered what qualifications you need to be a sell-side analyst? According to Stephen – none. • 11:20 - The importance of knowing a company's balance sheet and why Stephen thinks most investors pay little to no attention to it – at their own peril. • 12:46 - GAAP, Non-GAAP, and the real numbers in a company's books. • 17:44 – Stephen's independent view as a sell-side analyst doesn't go over too well with one of the large banking firms. • 21:44 – Stephen moves to the buy-side and finds telling the whole truth much more rewarding. • 25:32 – The repercussions of not trusting a company's CEO. • 33:55 – Why you “can't prove” Alibaba is a fraud. • 42:58 – Auditors: do they matter, and if so, how much? • 47:12 – “It's impossible for a company to commit fraud … people commit fraud.” Fraud – who's committing it and who pays for it? • 49:10 – “Would we be better off without audits?” • 52:53 – Trained and Equipped: the importance of understanding the equities. • 56:34 – “The Old Boys Club,” Jamie Dimon, and the lack of true independent directors. • 101:11 – Stephen develops Behind the Balance Sheet, providing research and consultancy, and educating the next generation of analysts.

Lock up your bikes and put on your scrubs, because we're nothing this week if not alarmists as we bring in the following issues!-Craigslist-Getting Medically Jerked Around-Turnpikes-Cultural spoilersIt's been mentioned more than once; "the wierd part of YouTube", but did you know that within the vast reaches of the internet there are even seedier places? Ancient places, where false promises are traded like folk tales on the wind, which smells of unbathed men in trench coats and cat urine. One such place, where e-roughians, iScoundrels and other ne-er-do-wells congregate is Craigslist. Craigslist is where you go to investigate the possibility of hooking up with a stranger, only to end up with all of the diseases and none of the pleasure. Craigslist is where you attempt to buy or sell an item and somehow wind up in possession of a dead body. Craigslist is, simply put, a place where no one can be trusted, everything is a trap, and the only thing you're going to get reliably is jerked around. And speaking of getting jerked around . . .I've talked about medical stuff quite a bit, here of late, but I suppose it's fair to draw from the wellspring of my personal life, even if it is a bit monotone sometimes. But, the medical profession has a way of keeping your life spicy. And by "spicy", I mean infuriating and chaotic, because it's impossible to go to a doctor with a simple request. Getting what you need from any medical professional is kind of like finding the plot to an episode of The Simpsons; you start out in one spot, and by the second commercial break, you've spun out of control into a cyclone of nonsequitirs and nonsense that, to some, may seem whimsical, but when you're the one bouncing from appointment to appointment, it looses its lustre really quickly. I'd almost be willing to pay more (that is, let my insurance pay more) if it would allow me to circumvent the ping pong of referrals. Kindof like an interstate bypass around a congested city, but with a toll. Yeah, that'd make sense, but roads with tolls, on the other hand . . .If there's one thing that outsiders can't stand, but insiders love, it's a good ol' fashioned Old Boys Club. You know, the kind where you scratch my back, and I scratch yours. The kind where I'm a government official, and if you'll give me kickbacks, I'll let you run your little project with ethics as questionable as your evil little heart desires. Welcome to Tab's favorite Oklahoma turnpike. But, really, I can't say I'm surprised. We can't just have something like a road get built on time and on budget. That's not how the world works. Instead, you start a company to build a road and you milk the voters who gave it the greenlight. Then you milk their kids. Then their grandkids. Then their great grandkids. You milk everyone until the end of time, or until your scheme is put to an end. But that kind of thing takes time. It takes generations, sometimes, for the opinion of the populace to turn against you. Culture is a thing that can sometimes change swiftly and sometimes slowly. Ideas, called "memes", can permeate culture virally now, so that any idea or fact can be promulgated unavoidably. And speaking of unavoidable facts . . .It's not often that you get to experience something old through fresh eyes. Take me, for example. I've been watching Star Wars since I was a kid. My brother and cousin were fanatics, and I was bombarded with every available Star Wars fact all day, every day. And that was in the 80's. Now imagine trying to experience that First Time feeling of A New Hope forty years after it was released. Enter my gorgeous wife, Aunt Buck, who had never actually gotten around to watching the original trilogy. Suddenly, through her, I had the opportunity to share in her first time experience. But, sadly, some facts are SO memetic and ubiquitous that even she had not avoided them. "No . . . I am your father." And so, before we were out of the first act, what is arguably THE biggest spoiler in Star Wars was already tainting the experience of a movie that it didn't even touch. Many YouTubers and podcasters will give a half-hearted spoiler warning for an old movie; "Hey, if you haven't seen this movie . . it's been out for forty years, so you have no excuse". Except when you do. For instance, I have never watched the movie Soylent Green, but I already know about Moses staggering out of the Ark screaming "SOYLENT GREEN IS A GMO!"Lots of great voicemails this week, from such fan favorites as Andy and Sage, but some other familiar voices, too. Whose car is going on a journey to the center of the earth? You'll have to listen to this week's episode to find out!
