Minisode 675: New Level, Old Devil: Why Family Of Origin Stuff Keeps Showing Up

Your Kick Ass Life Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later May 9, 2025 26:36

I've had the phrase “New level, old devil” in my notes for years. YEARS. And somehow, it never made it into an episode… until now. Apparently, it wanted to be the finale of minisodes. And honestly? It's perfect timing, because this one runs deep. (And yes, this is the last minisode I'll be airing, but don't worry, the weekly podcast isn't going anywhere! Just scaling back on the extra minisodes. You'll get two episodes a month that are interviews, and the other two will be longer solo episodes, similar to the Coming Home to Yourself Series.)  Here's the deal: every time you uplevel—whether it's in your career, relationships, boundaries, or just giving yourself more damn rest—old stuff tends to come roaring back. Not because you're doing it wrong, but because growth shakes loose the beliefs you've been carrying around since childhood. That family-of-origin stuff? It doesn't just vanish. It waits in the wings until you're strong enough to deal with it.  The truth about those unconscious narratives is that these beliefs are old stories with loyal roots. What you'll learn in this episode: Why personal growth often triggers unresolved family-of-origin stuff The truth behind “new level, old devil” and how it shows up Six key reflection questions to identify where you're stuck or playing small The difference between explicit and implicit messages you absorbed growing up How we unconsciously engineer our lives to avoid rejection, discomfort, or being “too much” The connection between your current habits and your need for belonging What it means to wear emotional “armor”—and how to start taking it off The difference between top-down and bottom-up healing work Tools and modalities to start untangling old beliefs: journaling, somatic work, EMDR, psychedelics, and more How this all ties into the habits covered in How to Stop Feeling Like Sht* When you start waking up to the ways you've been staying small, it can feel overwhelming. But here's the thing—you didn't choose these stories on purpose, and you're not broken for believing them. This is your invitation to get curious, offer yourself some grace, and begin rewriting your life in a way that honors who you are now—not who you had to be back then. If this episode resonated and you're ready to finally break free from self-sabotaging habits and start choosing yourself on purpose, join me in How to Stop Feeling Like Sh*t: The 8-Week Experience. He shares how he found more self-love and worth within himself, which amplified everything he already had, including his business and family life.We also discuss the concept of detachment and how it taught him to appreciate things for what they are, rather than constantly wanting more. She is known for her signature platform, “Your Kick-Ass Life”, which began in 2008 as a blog on all things women's empowerment, before expanding it into a suite of educational tools such as podcasts and books. Andrea is the author of 52 Ways to Live a Kick-Ass Life (2013), How to Stop Feeling Like Sh*t (2018), and, most recently, Make Some Noise: Speak Your Mind and Own Your Strength (2021). Listen in as Andrea talks about the anger that motivated her to write Make Some Noise—driven by her belief that there is still so much to do in the realm of women's empowerment in the 2020s, and that true change begins when women gain the courage to make some noise at the individual level. She also gives her thoughts on what men can do to contribute to this cultural shift and why different lived experiences between males and females can actually serve as a bridge rather than a divide towards equality.   Follow Andrea @heyandreaowen Follow Chase @chase_chewning   Episode resources: Save 15% on Sugarbreak with code CHASE at http://sugarbreak.com/chase  Join the Ever Forward Book Club http://bit.ly/efbookclub  Learn more about Andrea and get complete show notes at https://chasechewning.com/podcasts/episode/519

If there’s one thing women have in common it’s that we are really, *really* good at making ourselves feel crappy. We do this in a variety of ways from people pleasing to trying to be perfect; from catastrophizing to overachieving, or simply isolating ourselves and numbing out because feeling our feelings is simply too scary. It costs us our happiness and holds us back from the things that we want most - health, happiness, and love, not always in that order.  Andrea Owen, life coach and author of “How to Stop Feeling Like Sh*t” offers a no BS explanation on why women engage in these often invisible, but certainly damaging habits. With wit, humor and bucket loads of compassion, Andrea and I dive deep into the root causes of how and why we create our own suffering and how to navigate the way out. In this episode we talk about: How spiritually bypassing the crap in your life by resorting to “positive thinking” is just as unhelpful as binging on food to numb the pain The beginning steps you need to take in order to start feeling your feelings (it’s not as hard or as scary as you might think) What a “compassionate witness” is and why everyone needs to have at least one in their life How easy and addictive it can be to run from shame - it’s a natural way to try and protect yourself but that are better ways to deal with that painful emotion The transformative nature of grief and what Andrea had to cope with after her father passed How there’s an “unsexy” side of personal development but yet it’s such an essential part of the self-discovery process http://www.jenniferpowter.com/018/

"I stopped following, bypassing my inner critic, knowing full well the future of my total physical and mental health was not dependent on Ms. Bendy Six Pack Von Instagram." —Andrea Owen, How to Stop Feeling Like Sh*t Although it seems like the holidays should be nothing but rosy and bright, filled with gratitude and good cheer, sometimes being back in our home of origin (with family, longtime friends, and/or in-laws) can send us into a personal growth regression machine. In past years I’ve caught myself reverting to my worst habits—whether it’s using the tone of voice of a high-schooler, layering on guilt for not being my best self, or not taking care of myself in the ways I know that i need in order to recharge and stay sane amidst the extraversion and people-immersion this time of year.  So I purposefully scheduled this awesome episode with my good friend Andrea Owen for this exact week. A time when, despite your best intentions, you might find yourself falling into the familiar traps of perfectionism, people-pleasing, controlling, and about 10+ others that get in our way and make us feel like sh*t. I hope you enjoy this conversation and find as much relief in it as I did!

Andrea Owen returned to the show today and she has a new book out called How to Stop Feeling Like Sh*t: 14 Habits that Are Holding You Back from Happiness. What I love about Andrea is that she is so good at focusing on the basics that people really need to master before they move onto more “advanced teachings” – because guess what? The advanced stuff doesn’t matter if you don’t have the basics down!! So we talked about how to fast track your self-awareness because it has to come before knowledge to be effective. We got into numbing and isolation – something so many of us can relate to, specifically how to spot the ways that seem normal, go under the radar, and how we do it so much because modern living is very conducive to both. We covered doing friendship as an adult, especially a growth-oriented adult, real, deep listening, shame, triggers, and feelings. So many juicy things, enjoy, share, and let me know what you think! xo, E About Andrea Owen: Andrea Owen is an author, mentor, and certified life coach who helps high-achieving women let go of perfectionism, control, and isolation and choosing courage and confidence instead. Overachieving. Numbing Out. Isolating. People Pleasing. These are just some of the habits that we might be employing subconsciously when we’re not quite operating at our best, or as this week’s guest Andrea Owen would put it — when we’re “feeling like sh*t.” Andrea is a life coach specializing in working with women and the author of the forthcoming book, “How To Stop Feeling Like Sh*t.” Andrea has an incredible energy with her words and an enviable vibrance for life, as well as a roller coaster of a backstory that sees her navigate two divorces, love addiction, a drinking problem, and transforming it all into a thriving career as a coach.
