Voices in the Muck: When the Spirit Won't Stay Silent When Don arrived to take up a leadership position at his new church, the Holy Spirit gave him a dream. He saw a group of men dressed in white hazmat suits. They were cleaning out piles of horrible muck from a culvert and moving it to the roadside nearby. Don woke up thinking how horrid it was that the muck was being exposed to all those driving by. Two days later, the nature and depth of the "muck" became clear as one by one, six different women came to Don to confess an affair with the former senior pastor. This episode of the God Conversations podcast is a heavy but important one. Our guest is a pastor from New Zealand who has decades of experience in ministry but has also been privy to some God conversations he'd rather not have. Along with his wife Karen, he led Gateway Church in Hamilton, New Zealand for 20 years. During this season, they watched God restore a church that had been torn apart by the sexual failure of its senior leadership to become a thriving congregation of over 1200 people. Don Barry is a gifted teacher whose ministry has been appreciated throughout New Zealand and many other nations. You'll learn so much from his wisdom born of experience walking with the Spirit. On the show you'll hear about: Don's spiritual journey and pathway into ministry leadership, beginning with a startling God conversation that led Don and Karen from their church in Cambridge to a church in Hamilton. Don reflects on how the Spirit used a feeling of being unsettled and then spoke through three different people to speak the same message. God may speak clearly but doesn't always give the details! Don's dream that God gave him twice when he arrived to take up a leadership position at his new church and the events that occurred almost immediately after, with six different people confessing affairs all independently of one another. A second vivid dream that showed how God was bringing sin to light so that it could be cleaned up. Instead Don faced pressure to cover it up. “I knew it was the Lord and we needed to know it was the Lord because a couple of voices from our executive said to me that this is the devil's attempt to destroy a good man's ministry. You should keep this covered…” Don reflects on the reasons why sin cannot be hidden. The only way God can transform our hearts and set us free is to convict and expose our sin. Transformation requires truth - you cannot receive grace without first confronting truth, ugly as that may be. Covering up is the worst thing we can do. There are rotten apples in any barrel. The test is what leadership do with them. The answer is not to put the lid on and hope they go away. People felt safe confessing it to you. Perhaps there was safety and integrity in your heart. Uncovering sin is painful. There's no such thing as "Dr Painless the dentist." We must confront the ugliness of of our lives. It's not to condemn but to deliver, but it does require the drill! The need for safe and trusted spaces so that sin can be exposed and people can be restored. Don reflects: “If could be our turn next week.” The role of conscience in relation to God's voice. For Don, the longer we walk with Jesus, the more our conscience and God's voice close ranks! God's purpose in exposure is always redemption. There is no shame or condemnation. God has incredible love for his church. If we don't discipline our children, we hate them. Truth-telling is an act of love - not a thing to be feared, but to be welcomed. Subscribe to God Conversations with Tania Harris and never miss an episode! Bio Don Barry has been involved in church leadership for five decades. For the last 30 years he has been a senior leader of Gateway Church in Hamilton, New Zealand. During this season he has watched as God has restored a church, broken and bruised by the sexual failure of leadership, into a thriving congregation.

I don't often do a solo podcast but God has been working on my heart when it comes to parenting teens and expectations and I felt prompted to sit down and share what I am learning with you all. So often as parents, we live in a worst-case scenario mindset, when it feels like the dreams and expectations for a child's future are not aligning with the present. We obsess over baby monitors, teen friendships, and grades/sports but this comes from a place of worry, or even fear-based control. God wants freedom and hope in our parenting! I realized I have a choice: to believe in an imagined bad scenario or to flip a switch and choose hope and expect in God for unimaginable good things to come. Both choices involve belief, imagination and control. I'm choosing to double down turn my belief toward hope, knowing that even when things don't go as planned, God's story is far greater. In this episode, I will share the steps God gave me to practically practice choosing hope over worry. How to walk with the Spirit and produce fruit instead of formula-based parenting rooted in power and control. Reminding my own heart that God is good and has a good story for our kids- let's lean into the HUGE expectation that God is the God of HOPE and let our prayers align with that truth. Today we're joined by directing duo Adam Schindler and Brian Netto, the creative minds behind the new horror thriller Don't Move. The guys share how they transformed the universal fear of immobility into a gripping narrative that they ultimately sold to Netflix and discuss what it was like shooting in the Bulgarian wilderness, working with legendary producer Sam Raimi, and how they developed a hauntingly charismatic serial killer played by Finn Wittrock, alongside a powerful and emotionally charged performance by lead actress Kelsey Asbille. Don't Move is now streaming on Netflix. Here are some key takeaways from this conversation with Brian and Adam:Take Breaks.Early drafts of their script didn't work—there was a disconnect between the concept of paralysis and the main character's emotional journey. Rather than forcing a solution, they decided to put the project aside for a while and focus on other things. When they returned to the script with fresh perspectives, they were able to see the story's missing elements more clearly and reapproach it with renewed energy. The takeaway here is don't be afraid to pause: when creativity stalls, putting your project down for a short period can provide the mental clarity and distance needed to spot problems and find solutions. Even if you're not directly working on a project, your brain will subconsciously work on a solution in the background. Patience leads to stronger work: Rushing to force solutions can lead to uninspired results. Instead, embrace the process and trust that time away can lead to breakthroughs.Write a Scalable Script.Brian and Adam intentionally crafted a story that could be produced at varying budget levels, making it adaptable for different production scenarios. This strategy proved invaluable when pitching the project. Whether it became a $1M indie film shot in a handful of locations or a larger studio-backed production with expanded scope, the story's essence and emotional core remained intact and gave them the flexibility to pitch to a wide array of producers. They compared their approach to Beck and Woods who wrote A Quiet Place. When pitching A Quiet Place, Beck and Woods famously intended to shoot their high-concept horror story for $75,000 in their hometown if it didn't sell. By ensuring their script could be executed with minimal resources, the Don't Move team gave themselves the flexibility to proceed regardless of the budgetary constraints. For Don't Move, the scalability made the film an easier sell to partners, such as producer Sam Raimi and Netflix, while also leaving room for creative adjustments based on the final budget.Safety First. One of the most critical lessons the directors learned from Sam Raimi was the importance of prioritizing safety on set. Raimi repeatedly emphasized that it was their responsibility as directors to ensure the well-being of every cast and crew member, whether during stunt work or handling environmental hazards like shooting scenes on a 200-foot cliff or filming complex car stunts. No shot or sequence is worth compromising the safety of cast or crew, and it's the directors' job to uphold this standard at all times. This commitment to safety extended beyond stunts. Through their leadership, the directors fostered an environment where every crew member felt valued and secure, which in turn contributed to a more collaborative and focused set. By prioritizing safety, they set the tone for a productive and respectful creative process.Show NotesMovies Discussed:GravityThe Vanishing (1988)BarbarianSmileFollow Brian Netto at:IMBd:

Many of the crew members hired Brian to represent them.Brian and his firm took on one of the largest shipping companies in the world, Maersk Lines Limited. At the same time, Brian and his team countered a massive Hollywood publicity campaign that portrayed Captain Phillips as a hero and the crew as lazy layabouts. Brian's investigative efforts ensured that the true story was told, and Maersk ultimately agreed to an out-of-court settlement for each client Brian represented after completely denying any negligence or responsibility for years.Brian represented Captain Wren Thomas, who was kidnapped by Nigerian mercenaries while operating off the Coast of West Africa. This episode features Mike coaching two Next Level clients on improving their sales conversations. For Robert, Mike advises him to focus on the customer's specific needs and frame the service in a way that addresses those needs instead of highlighting the company's features and benefits. For those struggling with sales, Mike suggests it may be helpful to show understanding and empathy for the customer's needs instead of using language like "we're the best." For Don, Mike coaches him on changing one's frame of mind to approach conversations with a more productive and positive mindset, which he suggests is 80% of the battle when it comes to successful communication. Carlos and I talked to Don Thacker and Adrian Di Giovanni from Motivation Growth. They became such good friends from working together on that film that they are now business partners at Imagos Films. Mr. Di Giovanni is from Philadelphia and was originally in theatre and comedy improv in Chicago and just before he was about to give up the entertainment business for a career in insurance, he took one last audition and read for Ian in the independent horror, Motivational Growth. We talk about what the inspiration was for them going into film. For Don it was tv as a little kid and the story is really intriguing! For Adrian, it was being in theatre, in school. Mr. Thacker originally made and shopped an entirely different script about physics that would have been much more expensive. Don talks about the very unique way he pitched the physics movie. That movie did not happen but the compromise was another much smaller film made of an amalgamation of ideas which turned into Motivational Growth. Don explains the effort it took to make the film and only masterful artistry of an incredible crew could have made that happen. He also explains his inspiration for The Mold and Ian. Don talks about his goal and philosophy about art and how being compelling is the most important thing, any reaction is a win. If you're still thinking about it later, even if you hate it, it's a win. It doesn't matter what it compels. “Art should compel.” Support the arts and support indie films!! Think back to your very first job - whether it was a full time 9-5, a nights and weekends cash based gig, or the daily chores you had as a child. What lessons did you learn or habits did you develop in that job that contribute to your current role? For Don, working in his family's catering business as a child taught him the value of hard work, social adaptability, and a “do what it takes to get the job done” mindset. A keynote speaker and fitness entrepreneur, Don has coached actors, athletes, & musicians for over 20 years. He opened his first NYC Gym, Drive 495, in 2005. After operating brick & mortar gyms for 15 years, Don expanded to a global online fitness business and has developed a reputation for training some of the biggest names in Hollywood for the big screen. Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Jake Gyllenhaal, John Krasinski, Emily Blunt, Annie Hathaway, Sebastian Stan, Liev Schreiber, Hugh Jackman, & David Harbour are among his roster of clients. He has been tapped as a fitness expert in several popular publications and sits on the advisory board of Men's Health Magazine. Discussing everything from his catering experience to his extremely successful career training celebrities in New York City, in today's episode, Don expands on a few key points, including: The best piece of advice he received from his grandfather (26:00) His training approach as he gets older (28:30) The most important “next step” for young coaches and entrepreneurs (41:00) How to handle and improve upon your biggest social weaknesses (59:50) How to Connect w/ Don: Website: Donsaladino.com Instagram: @Donsaladino Upcoming Event: The Art of Coaching 30 Day Challenge is BACK starting March 6th! We identify quickly that Marijn is likely to suffer a little simply because of a high-sarcasm level within the evil mind of Steve during the recording. Steve sends his apologies!!Names of Internets got a little time which represents the point about style that the team use for the project. The Style, tone of voice, graphics, and word choice helps set the style of the project, training, look and feel etc. So often the name chosen will drive the style. Some thoughts on how the project is linked to the corporate brand, but the best advice is to have a feel of the corporate branding in whatever style you decide on for the communications and adoption of the project.Navigation gets a good minute or two both on style and importance before taxonomy has a few sarcastic comments that ensures it is not forgotten and an indication that it is important and something that needs to be taken seriously.Returning to the link to the company branding needs to be considered but the intranet and project communications should be aligned to the company style. Steve and not sure about how a company ethos is defined and by who and gets very deep on this wondering who makes the decisions.... Marijn is right in that M365 project needs to work alongside the way the company operates. We do agree on the fact that different companies need a different personality to the project and intranet, we know banks are more serious than a software house etc. Steve does need to let it go... companies find their own level it is not decided by ‘John' or any team.Marijn hits on the important point that whatever style/vibe/feel you decided on it should be consistent from beginning to the end and a strategy of style that everyone signs up forDon't let the style take away the main priority that M365 projects are about changing and improving communications and collaborationYou should not forget that you need to balance the audience needs and the company style. Legal people have a different mindset to engineers and marketing and the content is very different ranging from Serious to stories to data sheets. Maybe the pages and terms used on different divisions pages need varied styles. The Boys finish with a very rare whisky from this weeks Fies Ila festival from Islay in Scotland. We are very impressed with this year's edition from Kilchoman, the Fèis Ìle 2022 Edition.
**While I was putting this episode together, the James Beard Awards semifinalists dropped, and Don, unsurprisingly, is a contender as one of the country's Best Bakers. Congrats, Don, and best of luck! You deserve it, friend!** Today, I talk to baker Don Guerra, founder of the celebrated Barrio Bread in Tucson, AZ. Don's bread is a truly post-colonial fusion of French sourdough technique using heritage grain lines that date back to their introduction in the Sonoran region by Catholic missionary, Father Kino in the 17th century. And it's freakin' delicious. He gave me a few samples after our conversation, and I sat in a parking lot and ate an entire loaf on its own, by myself, without shame. For Don, his heritage is alive in the bread he bakes. He's an Arizona native with Mexican indigenous roots on his father's side, and European lineage on his mother's. He's made it his life's work, not just to bake what Food & Wine magazine recently called the best bread in Arizona, but also to imbue his bread with the history and terroir of the region and his own life. Representation matters to him, and he's proud to stand up as a baker of color and say, this life is for anyone who wants to work hard enough to have it. Don, along with his longstanding farming partnerships, is responsible for bringing several wheat varietals back from the brink of extinction. He has an intimate relationship with his product at every stage. He's involved in the growing, harvesting, and milling of the wheat with which he makes his signature flour blends. He also spends the better part of most days driving the Barrio Bread delivery truck, supplying restaurants and markets all over Tucson with the day's spoils. Don Guerra has the hands of an artist, the drive of a hustler, and the heart of a good teacher — which he was before he started his bakery. In fact, during my time in Tucson, I met, randomly, more than one person who was once a proud student of his. One night, Don and I had dinner together, and two of his now-grown students stopped at our seats to say hi. Connection to his community is more than a talking point for Don. It's his deepest ethic, his way of life. I really enjoyed getting to know him, and I hope you will, too. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

In this new episode of our Arts & Dementia series, Lisa Loiselle and special co-host Cynthia Huling Hummel, speak with couple Lynda Everman and Don Wendorf about the importance of the expressive arts in self-care. Don describes expressive arts are esthetic or artsy that have the power to prompt emotions, to allow for an expression of emotions or an emotional reaction, to prompt memories and associations and allow some participation and sharing of that kind of experience with other people. It can be anything artistic like music, visual arts, writing and poetry. For Linda Everman, it is fabric arts like quilting and making stoles. Linda describes how the stole initiative began and how it has evolved into the writing of a book. For Don and Cynthia, music has allowed each of them to express themselves but also connect with others. Cynthia, Lynda and Don also speak about the enjoyment they get from their respective arts endeavours and how that has allowed them to continue to live well as a person with dementia and as care partners. For more information go to the Arts & Dementia section of our resource page.
Gavin Timms and Don Costa, co-hosts of Coffee With Closers Live, are here with us today to talk about how Don got started in real estate investing, how he overcame a massive loss when the markets crashed in 2008, and how he rebuilt into one of the biggest investing businesses in the country. For Don, the epiphany came when he hit rock bottom. He had to really take a hard look at how he was doing things, realize that there was a better way, and start over. He also realized that it was important to surround himself with like-minded people. Not only did they have valuable experience that he could learn from, but they helped keep him accountable and on track with his goals. That's what a good mastermind program should be. It should feel like a community, a place where you can bounce ideas off of people and get different perspectives on things. My CMO clients remind me every day that COVID has pushed their leadership agility to its limits. And their best people are at risk of leaving in droves. I understand why. A recent ADP Research Institute study reports that only 14 percent of the 26,000 people surveyed are "highly engaged" at work. We can quickly recognize a highly engaged person when they approach the job with vigor, enthusiasm, and dedication. As a CMO coach and peer group leader, I am committed to helping my clients and members address this historic trend. In this episode, I share the screen with Don McGuire, the CMO of Qualcomm. For Don, mental wellness and sustaining healthy teams are personal. In fact, he joined us during Qualcomm's first Mental Health Day! CEO Cristiano Amon declared this particular Friday a holiday, and he was one of the very few people in the office. Don and I discuss how to creatively and proactively engage teams in today's hybrid settings, building customer communities in the digital world, and more. Click here for the replay. Key points covered in this episode: ✔️ Prioritizing employees' mental health and team engagement. Business results are essential, especially at a publicly-traded company like Qualcomm. But workers' productivity will rely heavily on creating positive engagement as well. This begins by addressing their mental health and concerns with feeling isolated. ✔️ Marketing leadership is about creating forward, positive motion and bringing people along with you on that journey. Many people call themselves managers, but the word manager has undermined leadership for a very long time. Managing something implies that you're mostly focused on executing against your marketing goals. Leading creates a spark and sustains a movement. It either pushes or pulls your vision in a specific direction. ✔️ If you truly understand what drives results in your company, you can be a better marketer. Working IN the business versus working ON the business is a philosophical shift people need to make to make the leap from “marketing fulfillment center” to “growth leader.” ✔️ It's about being conscious, sensitive, and getting feedback. Just making sure that we are as inclusive as possible with our teams worldwide, creating the connection, and sharing stories about how things are going will create a huge lift in overall engagement. It also boosts morale and encourages collaboration and commitment. Don and Chris reflect on the 4th of July. For Don, the holiday marks the first time he is seeing his entire family in person since the pandemic—including his mother, Katherine Clark, who joins him for this episode. Kelly Fordon's 'I Have the Answer' came out last year on Wayne State University Press: If you thought the suburbs were boring, think again. Kelly Fordon's I Have the Answer artfully mixes the fabulist with the workaday and illuminates relationships and characters with crisp, elegant prose and dark wit. The stories in Fordon's latest collection are disquieting, humorous, and thought-provoking. They might catch you off guard, but are always infused with deep humanity and tenderness. Kelly Fordon is the author of an award-winning short story collection, Garden for the Blind (Wayne State University Press, 2015); a poetry chapbook, The Witness, which won the Eric Hoffer Award for the Chapbook; and a poetry collection, Goodbye Toothless House. https://kellyfordon.com/
