In this month's series, “Resorting to Murder,” I share cases proving that murder never takes a holiday. This week's case tells the story of a rocky mother-daughter relationship, a fight over an inheritance, and a cold-blooded murder that occurred at a luxury resort. Was the murder of socialite Sheila von Wiese-Mack the desperate act of an abused child or spurred on by an entitled young woman's greed? As summer draws to a close in the Northern Hemisphere, we are going to discuss two Vacation Nightmare cases in this episode of the True Crime Society Podcast. Australian woman Elly Warren travelled to Africa in 2016 for the trip of a lifetime. She had been scuba diving with marine biologists and had been swimming with Manta Rays. One night, towards the end of her vacation, she went to a bar in Tofo Beach, Mozambique for a few drinks and to catch up with friends. She indicated to the group that she was going to get a drink and she would be back to join them. When Elly didn't come back, her friends assumed she had gone back to their hostel. Elly's body was found the next morning, outside a public bathroom. Mozambique officials have given varying stories about how Elly died. Her family believes she was murdered and an investigation is ongoing to this day. Heather Mack and her mother Sheila had a contentious relationship. Police were called to their family home on average once a month. There were allegations of abuse and violence between the pair. In 2014, Sheila paid for herself and Heather to fly first class to Bali for a vacation. They checked into luxury hotels, but their relaxation didn't last long. Heather stole her mother's credit card and bought airplane tickets for her boyfriend Tommy to join them in Bali. When Tommy arrived in Bali, he fought with Sheila and their altercation turned deadly. Sheila was beaten to death and her body was stuffed in a suitcase. Heather and Tommy were arrested in connection with her murder and they were incarcerated in Indonesian prisons. Heather was pregnant at the time of the murder – she gave birth and her baby lived in the squalid jail cell with her for years. In this episode of the True Crime Society Podcast, we discuss the cases of murdered Australian woman Elly Warren and the case of suitcase murderer Heather Mack. **TIMESTAMP** If you'd like to skip straight to the crime content, please go to (11:18) Read our blogs for these cases - https://truecrimesocietyblog.com/2023/09/05/australian-woman-elly-warren-murdered-in-mozambique/ https://truecrimesocietyblog.com/2023/09/05/heather-mack-the-bali-suitcase-murder/ We are now on Patreon! Audio version of Greylock investor Seth Rosenberg's essay "Bringing DeFi Lending Mainstream," read by Greylock's head of editorial Heather Mack. Crypto hype and speculation got us into the current chaotic winter. But the core infrastructure remains, and is still ripe for the innovation that will take us into the next crypto summer. There are many real use cases across financial services that can not only usher us into a more secure, inclusive, and efficient financial system, but also return trust and ownership to those for whom crypto was created in the first place – the users. Rosenberg unpacks the use case of defi lending to illustrate how this can be done. You can read the essay here: https://greylock.com/greymatter/bringing-defi-lending-mainstream/

In this episode, you will hear the surprising press conference where Winnipeg Mayoral candidate Jenny Motkaluk broadsided rival Glen Murray over his undisclosed unfinished business with Elections Canada. Murray did not meet the deadline for filing expense and donor documentation after his failed 2020 try at the federal Green Party helm; Motkaluk discovered the province-hopping career politician is in breach of the Canada Elections Act requirements for transparency by campaigns. She's asked the Elections Commissioner to investigate. Our coverage and analysis is the most complete reporting of this stunning revelation you will find in Winnipeg media. 1.55 Motkaluk tells the media her campaign learned required filings were not on the Elections Canada website and that EC confirmed that Glan Murray had not filed mandatory declarations originally due April 6, 2021 JM: "Full compliance with all election laws is expected of every candidate for office in this country" 4.45 Marty sorts out details about Murray's failure to follow the election rules and sets up the media scrum 6.30 The first 3 media questions played include Marty first asking why voters should care about this issue; two other questions got more details of possible explanations for why the filing is 16 months overdue JM: "It calls into question his integrity and whether or not he thinks the rules apply to him" 8.30 Marty recaps Motkaluk's answers and adds that it's now known a 2 month extension had been granted, then explains what Bartley Kives of CBC asks in the next audio clip from the scrum 1130 Two more questions from Kives and Motkaluk's reply about her campaign and plan to set out policy initiatives 13.00 Marty learned that yet another Green leadership candidate is in breach alongside Murray. He reviews the explanation Heather Mack gave CBC of why she couldn't file the returns for Murray: "She inferred some mysterious volunteer vapourized the records and there was no back-up? - who knew??" He analyzes how Murray blew past the extension by 13 months before entering the Mayoral race, and by not going to court to seek a further extension Murray kept his offence hidden. Also, why did EC not prosecute these Green leadership also-rans? 21.50 A listener heard the previous interview with Bev Pike of the South Osborne Residents Group and lamented the treatment of citizens standing up against City Hall. "It sure doesn't seem like anyone has the balls to try and make a change", he wrote. Listen to how Jenny Motkaluk responded to that comment, and explain why she supports Winnipeg residents who are scared to risk personal attacks if they stand up for their principles - citing the reaction of haters earlier this summer to her defence of celebrating Canada Day: JM: "Being a north end girl, I don't take to bullies and I'm not afraid of people calling me names." 23.38 Marty wraps up by noting Motkaluk will meet with Bev Pike on Wednesday to follow-up on the complaints we aired on the podcast; this is proof we make a difference and can get candidates to engage with our audience to earn their votes. A family vacation to Bali turns deadly. Sheila von Wiese-Mack is found bludgeoned to death inside a suitcase. The socialite's 25-year-old daughter Heather Mack and her 21-year-old then-boyfriend, Tommy Schaefer are charged and convicted by an Indonesian court. Police say Schaefer bludgeoned von Wiese-Mack with a bowl and then he and Mack stuffed her body into a suitcase and attempted to flee the scene. Heather Mack was pregnant at the time and gave birth to a daughter in prison. When she turned two, she was placed with a foster family in Bali. Now, Mack is back in prison this time in Illinois. Mack said she was nervous about returning to the States, and what could happen to her daughter, once she is exposed to the media attention surrounding her mother. A judge has ruled the girl will remain with the Indonesian woman who raised her in Bali. #120 - In August 2014, a Bali taxi driver parked outside the St. Regis Hotel in Nasu Dua, Bali, noticed a red substance that looked like blood coming out from the trunk of his taxi. When he drove to the police station, police officers opened the trunk and found a bloody suitcase. Inside the suitcase was the body of a dead adult female. She had been badly beaten to death and then stuffed inside a suitcase.Bali police quickly zeroed on a potential suspect. Someone very close to the victim. But they claimed they were innocent. The audio version of Greylock general partner Asheem Chandna's column for Forbes, "The Long Game in Cybersecurity." As the underlying technology of cybersecurity advances, so, too, does the cyber threat. Chandna spoke with four cybersecurity experts about how things might play out in the coming years. On the latest episode of Jukebox Zeroes, Lilz and Patrick get into their critical submarine and embark, James Cameron-like on an aural deep dive. Not a deep dive like one would dive into the discography of a favored artist or band, but a deep dive into the dregs of musical badness. Instead of scouring the bottom of the Marianas Trench like Jacques Cousteau would, they'll be scouring the depths of the internet music database and review site AllMusic.com (A constant critical source for many episodes) for critical disappointment. For this roundup, Lilz and Patrick have gathered up 12 random records from the murky reaches of AllMusic's 1-star review section, and along with return guests and fellow bad music connoisseurs Heather Mack and Mike Dunn of Make It Stop, will be attempt to make some sense of the hideous treasures they unearth. Maybe there are some gems hidden among these musical failures. Not likely. But join us anyway!

LGBT servicemen and women in the US armed forces had to keep their sexuality secret until the 'Don't ask, don't tell' policy was repealed in 2011. Lieutenant Colonel Heather Mack served under the policy for most of her military career. She has been speaking to Rachael Gillman about her experiences. A tragic death of a loved one is traumatic for the people they leave behind. But enough to cause a daughter to viciously abuse her mother and later kill her? This is what Heather Mack did alongside her boyfriend. What’s worse they stuffed her mother’s body in a suitcase hoping to inherit her money.
Hi guys! This week we accidentally drank Mural by New Belgium (take a listen for the full details), and we talked about the haunting of the Hotel del Coronado, and the absolutely bananas Bali suitcase murder of Sheila von Weise-Mack by her daughter, Heather Mack.
Strap on in #stoppies, because it's time for another hefty dose of White Nonsense(TM) and for this one we're bringing in the big guns. Local rapper and professional fuck abandoner Brandie Blaze joins us this week to take aim at Lil Dicky, perhaps one of the most overhyped and underhanded rapper we've ever discussed on this show. Lil Dicky's brand of aw-shucks faux-self-deprecation is the hallmark of this bloated 19-song flaccid handie of an album, whose culminating message seems to be white people can try on hip hop as a costume and make millions as a shortcut to a comedy career. Isn't that just fucking hilarious? But it's even more wild when Ms. Blaze pulls back the veneer and exposes Dicky for the fraudulent, privileged huckster he is. Plus hear all about the songs on Brandie Blaze's bangin' playlist as an added bonus for making it through this monstrosity with us. Trust me--you don't want to miss it! Check out Brandie Blaze's excellent music here: https://soundcloud.com/brandieblaze Produced by Heather Mack at Boston Free Radio studios in Somerville. Intro/outro music by Patrick Ahern.
Anyone who's ever been in a band can relate to performing in an empty venue. It's part of the experience. Maybe you've even fudged the numbers of your draw to get onto a bill. Maybe you've lied about ticket sales in the hundreds. Maybe you put together fake promotional materials and social media liked by fake people to bolster your appearance. Maybe those venues are in Europe, where people expect to see an internationally touring act, but instead get local dive bar randos. If that's not you, it can only be the maddening tale of Threatin, the one man metal band who scored a European tour through meticulously crafted lies and deception only for it all to fall apart the moment these venues realized they'd been duped. Threatin's story was one of the most bizarre music-related pieces of news of 2018, and now the goodboix of Jukebox Zeroes have teamed up with fellow bad music connoisseur (And return guest) Heather Mack of Make It Stop to attempt to make sense of this madness, while listening to their less touched upon full-length Breaking The World.Essay bed music: smell - "köpek"

In this episode, I explore the case of Sheila Von Weise-Mack, a Chicago mother who was murdered while on vacation in Bali with her 19-year-old daughter. After wheeling a suspicious-looking suitcase out into the lobby upon checkout from their resort, Sheila's daughter, Heather Mack, and Heather's boyfriend, Tommy Schaefer, flee the scene. Investigators are horrified to find Sheila's body inside the suitcase. Justice in Bali is a lot different than justice in other parts of the world. In Part 1, you'll hear details of the crime, as the court in Bali hears them. Please consider supporting Court Junkie with as little as $3 a month via Patreon.com/CourtJunkie.
