Few innovators have had a better front row seat on the internet revolution than Idealab chairman Bill Gross. Having founded Idealab in 1996, Gross has been a participant in every wave of digital innovation - from Web 1 and 2.0 to Web 3 and today's AI revolution. He's also been a frequent speaker at events like DLD, the Munich based annual conference which is celebrating its 20th anniversary in January. And so, having visited Gross at his ultra cool Idealab offices in Pasadena, I asked the serial entrepreneur and investor to reminisce about the last twenty years of tech history. What were his greatest successes and failures? And how fundamentally different is today's AI boom from the other cycles of innovation that he's experienced?Bill Gross founded Idealab in March 1996. Bill is a lifelong entrepreneur, starting his first solar business in high school. After graduating from the California Institute of Technology, Bill started GNP Development, Inc., which made a natural language product for Lotus 1-2-3 called HAL. Kreativní studio Mangoshake se zabývá tvorbou architektonických vizualizací, produktovými animacemi, ale i filmovou tvorbou. Jejími kreativními řediteli jsou Jakub Klimeš a Filip Gladiš. Filip Gladiš a Jakub Klimeš vedou kreativní studio Mangoshake a učí tuzemské značky novým prezentačním pravidlům. Celou animaci či vizualizaci můžete během chvíle přeměnit do jiných barev nebo změnit její pozadí a tím nepodléhá kampaň ani sezónnosti. In this special episode, RAPM Focus takes a break from its usual format of discussing specific research projects to discuss instead how research in health care is increasingly vital yet often hindered by escalating costs and time constraints. Editor-in-Chief Brian Sites, MD, discusses these challenges with Alexander (Xan) Abess, MD, and Jonathan Weed, MD. Traditional, large scale, randomized controlled trials are resource intensive, making them challenging for clinicians to conduct. As a result, innovative approaches to engage in knowledge acquisition are becoming paramount. Creating a scholastic environment within the anesthesia department not only fosters a culture of continuous learning, but also becomes essential for attracting and retaining talent. Dr. Abess is an anesthesiologist at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center and assistant professor of anesthesiology and perioperative medicine at Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth. He has previously served as the vice chair of quality and safety, department of anesthesiology and perioperative medicine, and is actively involved with the Multi-Center Perioperative Outcomes Group (MPOG). He is the founder and Director of IDEA Lab (Innovation, Development, and Entrepreneurship in Anesthesiology). Xan has a wide range of clinical experience (private practice, academic medicine, military medicine) and medical device development experience, having previously started his own medical device company. He understands well the challenges of medical innovation and truly enjoys helping others achieve their development goals while also attempting to improve the quality of health care delivery and simultaneously addressing our broader economic and workforce challenges. Dr. Weed is a clinical assistant professor of anesthesiology at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center. He is a graduate of Tulane Medical School and completed his anesthesiology residency at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, followed by a fellowship at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in regional anesthesia. He spent several years as a residency program director at Tulane Medical Center before returning to Tulane Medical Center in 2021. His most recent interests relate to the use of the electronic health record to improve clinical workflow in research within the department. *The purpose of this podcast is to educate and to inform. Odstartovala expozicí v Centru současného umění DOX v Praze, kde prezentovala kolekci pánských a dámských ručně pletených svetrů a doplňků reagujících na silné tendence současného českého skla a porcelánu. Episode #327 of The VentureFizz Podcast features Reed Sturtevant, General Partner at Engine Ventures. This is exciting! Why? Because this episode is longer than my normal interviews, as Reed and I cover his career that spans multiple decades across major technological platform shifts. This means that based on his career, he has so many great stories to share. It is like a historical walkthrough of the Boston tech scene. We even had to do two sessions, so if you are watching this video from our YouTube channel then you'll notice the different sweaters that Reed is wearing. Today, Reed is a General Partner at Engine Ventures, a “tough tech” venture capital firm launched by MIT and trust me on this one, as you'll want to stay tuned throughout the whole episode! Here is an outline of what we cover: * Reed's background story, including graduating from high school at 15 years old, his experience as a factory worker and his studies at MIT. * Developing a program called Freelance Graphics at a startup that was acquired by Lotus and his experience there, which was twice the size of Microsoft at the time. * Co-Founding Radnet, which raised the largest venture round of its time in Boston. * Running company development in Boston for IdeaLab, Bill Gross' internet incubator which spun out companies like Compete, Picasa and others. * Meeting Katie Rae at EONS, a startup founded by Jeff Taylor, and then running Microsoft Startup Labs. * Launching Project 11 Ventures with Katie and then running Techstar Boston together which included many successful companies like GrabCAD, PillPack, and others. * Founder conflict and how it can destroy a startup. * The details of Engine Ventures and what Reed is targeting for investments, plus portfolio company examples. * What it was like leading a course at MIT with Sir Tim Berners-Lee. * And so much more.
Federal Tech Podcast: Listen and learn how successful companies get federal contracts
Today we sit down with Susan Kidd and Valinder Mangat and discuss FedRAMP. Some will argue that FedRAMP is an unruly thirteen-year-old. Although FedRAMP has authorized over three hundred public service cloud providers, there is much work to be done. For example Valinder Mangat opens the discussion by noting that we have approximately five hundred applications in the pipeline. We have a situation where manually reviewing compliance is going to be too difficult. As a result, FedRAMP is making changes. They are starting to automate the process, causing companies to become familiar with a new acronym, Open Security Controls Assessment Language, or OSCAL. During the interview, Susan Kidd reviews her philosophy that ties into understanding OSCAL. It has been her experience that there is a limit to working hard; the best results are accomplished when one takes advantage of automation and can work smart. To that end, Susan Kidd launched something called Idea Labs, an initiative that can assist federal agencies in modernizing their automation processes using OSCAL. Today's compliance is not just a check box item. In the interview, Valinder Mangat details aspects of software development. There was a time when code was released and approved, like a snapshot. Today, there is a continuous improvement model in effect along with continuous testing. The only way to accomplish that is to leverage technologies like OSCAL to keep up with changes in threat actors and best practices for handling mountains of data. Valinder Mangat has a nice summary of this consideration: champions of innovation instead of captives of compliance. In other words, technology can be leveraged so a company does not take six months to get approved. OSCAL puts tools into the hands of federal leaders faster. Episode 98: I'm going to be breaking down a 45-minute video by one of the greatest startup minds of all-time, who quite possibly, you've never heard of. Bill Gross is the Founder of IdeaLab, considered by many to be the world's first venture studio. Modeled after Thomas Edison's Lab, a place where many ideas and inventions can be tested under one roof, IdeaLab went on to find 5,000 ideas, launch 150 companies, and successfully IPO or exit 50 businesses. The business hit its 25-year-mark in 2021 and Bill Gross shared an article titled “My 25 lessons learned from 25 years of creating companies,” which is a goldmine for any business builder. I'm going to walk you through all 25 lessons in a way that saves you from watching all 45 minutes, but you still have a sense of why they matter and how to apply them to your company. September in Berlin. Der Rabattcode lautet “FAST23”. Beide auf der Bits & Pretzels am 25. September in München. Verena auf der Myway Mittelstandskonferenz von The Pioneer am 29. September in Berlin. Verena auf der IdeaLab! am 6. Oktober in Vallendar. Lea auf der Baby Got Business Konferenz am 20. Oktober in Hamburg. Lea beim Female Future Force Day am 21. Oktober in Berlin. Verena beim People & Culture Festival am 8. November in Berlin.

Today's guest is Robert Piconi, CEO and co-founder at Energy Vault, which develops and deploys utility-scale energy storage solutions. The company's offerings include proprietary gravity, battery, and green hydrogen energy storage hardware technologies supported by a technology-agnostic energy management system software layer. They can deliver short- and long-duration energy storage with the goal of helping carbon-free energy be as cost-effective as possible at all times of the day and night. Robert and Cody have a great conversation about why energy storage matters, the different types of energy storage today, and some unique insights from Bill Gross at Idealab that led to the earliest version of Energy Vault. They talk about the rapid iterations Energy Vault has done on its gravity storage model, and how they've raised capital.
