CJ believes it takes hard work and strong mental toughness to achieve any goal. He grew up playing various sports and developed a strong passion for mentoring and coaching youth athletes. CJ also works with individual athletes to help them achieve their full potential through mental and self-discipline. In this episode, you will hear about: How CJ turned his hobbies into daily work Impact of coaching Coaches’ Journey Fear of Overcoming Limits Connection of Body, Mind, & Soul [02:10] CJ wasn’t sure what to do for the rest of his life or what group of individuals he would serve -- until he noticed his own interests while playing sports and exercising. CJ decided to explore Kinesiology and Sport Science and landed internship at a facility called Gymnazo. [04:01] Working with individuals in an open environment, where there were no machines, CJ found a way to connect with individuals who are struggling to figure out how their body moves. He realized that working out is like a chore, and it's just something that he must do to stay healthy. Through different communication styles, CJ learned the deeper purpose of working out. [07:30] Coaches meet different people with their own story, their own goals, ambitions, and even setbacks. CJ wanted to share authentic positive energy, which sometimes leads people to ask questions like, "why are you so happy all the time?". Coaches believe that when they show up for work, they are there to serve and are happy to help and guide others when someone is lost, or they're on their path, and we want to affirm it." [11:10] Being in a gym with coaches is like building chemistry for CJ. He believes that there is no one coach by themselves; they've got to work together. And as a team, they help to be a cutting edge of innovation and training. For CJ, it's not just about our physical training. It's a mental challenge and a spiritual challenge. [14:12] Every piece of equipment has its certification. CJ thinks that coaches end up getting stuck on how it needs to be done appropriately. CJ felt the limitation of working out, which will lead to burnout. Somehow, what changed his perception of how to program and how to see movement was that there are infinite ways to move people's bodies. [23:21] CJ's job is to help define what it means for someone to be healthy, fit, and more active, get to the more profound questions that drive someone's personality and their reality to shift in the way that they have always wanted to. CJ believes that's it is still accessible, but we have to be able to do the work and put in the effort to apply those things in practice. CJ wanted people to come back and give their best effort for him to do so as well. [25:33] CJ believes that to change someone's mindset starts with self-talk. [26:53] Accepting people's answers to what it means for them to be healthy and not questioning their beliefs. [29:02] Find your own goal or purpose for doing your training. It helps people to recognize the improvements and changes that happen over time. [36:21] Learning the proper way to breathing is beneficial to people. When it feels uncomfortable, people tend to react and stop doing it. But that's when people start to break free. As soon as they begin to have that basal foundation layer that's good for training, they begin to explore and turning it into a habit for better endurance and to be in tune. [42:56] Core values are essential for discovering what we value and what we believe in, connecting people that have the same wavelength as theirs. CONNECT WITH CJ! Naysayers often dismiss the Paleo lifestyle with the claim that it is simply a fad. But if you start at the beginning and explore what early humans were eating two million years ago, it becomes clear that the animal fat diet not only sustained our early ancestors but actually led to the development of our species. So if the Paleo movement is a fad, it’s a pretty persistent one! Today’s guest is no stranger to the pushback against the lifestyle, and he’s here to explain how the latest science and technology support his understanding of Paleo as the perfect human diet. CJ Hunt dropped dead at the age of 24. He was a dirt bike racer training to come back from an injury when he suffered full cardiac arrest while jogging. Paramedics resuscitated CJ, and he spent ten days in the ICU at UCLA Medical Center. Doctors eventually determined that he suffers from a birth defect in which the center of his heart is twice as thick as normal, and his left chamber is smaller. He was told that if he continued to exercise, he would be lucky to live for another two years. This experience inspired CJ’s curiosity in health and well-being, and ultimately led him to back to school at the age of 53 to earn a degree in Electronic Communications Arts from San Francisco State University so that he could produce the world’s first Paleo documentary, The Perfect Human Diet. The film reached #1 in the categories of Documentary Film and Independent Film on both iTunes USA and iTunes Canada when it was released in 2013. Together with its companion book, the movie introduces a system of optimal nutrition based on the latest science. Today CJ explains how nutrition has become so much like religion and politics, why public policy lags behind the best science, and the roots of the pushback against the Paleo/Primal movement. Listen in to understand the fundamentals of Paleo nutrition and why this two million-year-old ‘fad’ is making a comeback! Topics Covered [2:47] How CJ developed an interest in studying nutrition ‘Dropped dead’ at 24, given just a few years to live Began to study health and well-being [3:57] The evolution of CJ’s eating habits Sustained raw vegan diet for five years Mother killed by drunk driver, diet wasn’t helping recover from life trauma Gained muscle and recovered physically on animal protein [8:18] CJ’s approach to the film Best way to deconstruct massive problem is go back to beginning Explore what humans ate, how healthy they were Conduct guided investigation in search of perfect human diet [10:51] The ‘football field’ analogy of human evolution 70% of current diet only available since industrial revolution (a mere 91 years ago) As early ancestors continued to eat more animal foods, our brains developed (two million years ago) This is how we became human (160,000-200,000 years ago) [13:18] Nutrition as a belief system (rather than based in facts) People who’ve invested in a particular way of life resist new info [15:19] Nutrition and public policy Government not educating people with most current science First nutritional guidelines written by politicians’ staffers Food pyramid has become food plate, but not much change in basic information Grains and plants as foundation (though doesn’t hold up to rigorous science) Roadblocks in government due to vested interests Idea spread from ‘bottom up’ [19:47] The ‘feed lot pyramid’ Ratio of elements of food pyramid same as pig chow used to fatten up swine [21:04] How First Nations people respond to Paleo diet vs. westerners Instinctively found connections based on understanding of ancestors’ habits Namgis ancestors harvested fish, consumed very few fruits/vegetables Many becoming obese on standard American diet, recovered on Paleo Westerners disconnected from where food comes from (no spiritual connection) [24:56] Why CJ developed a companion book to complement the film People were writing to ask, “Can I eat this?” True understanding of concepts leads to long-term change Film limited on time, book goes deeper into the why Book clearly delineates human vs. non-human foods Audience finds film through book and vice versa [30:20] Why CJ is developing a sequel Much misinformation regarding health and sustainability Talk to world-class scientists to clarify understanding (i.e.: regenerative agriculture) [34:01] The pushback against the Paleo/Primal movement Discounted as fad Some vegetarians attack ‘If they’re upset, you’re doing something right’ Learn More About CJ Hunt CJ Hunt Reports The Perfect Human Diet Documentary The Perfect Human Diet Companion Book Resources Mentioned Protein Power: The High-Protein/Low Carbohydrate Way to Lose Fat, Feel Fit, and Boost Your Health – in Just Weeks! by Michael R. Do you keep thinking that if you just reach this next goal or hit that next milestone, THEN you’ll be happy? Overachievers have a tendency to attach our self-worth to how much we accomplish, and no matter how much success we enjoy, it never seems to be enough. So, how do we learn to appreciate the journey? How do we keep our career moving forward AND connect with what brings us real joy? CJ McClanahan is a popular keynote speaker and executive coach. He launched his coaching firm in 2003, and since then, he has spent 10,000 hours in front of entrepreneurs, executives and their teams and coached them to achieve record profits and profound business growth. But no matter how much success his clients attained, CJ recognized that few seemed to enjoy the journey. This inspired him to shift his focus and support high-achievers in finding the joy in their lives—while still realizing their professional goals. To that end, CJ wrote The Overachiever’s Dilemma: How to Break the Achievement Obsession Before It Breaks You. Today, CJ joins Emerald to explain how he uncovered his calling to serve overachievers and discuss the danger in attaching our self-worth to how much we acquire. He shares his system of helping clients redefine success in terms of unique talents, meaningful relationships and a fulfilling journey. CJ also describes his purpose-focused coaching philosophy, offering insight into the value of a coach who points out what we’re missing. More About This Show At the start of his career with Arthur Anderson, his was given a laptop. It was his first, and completely useless by today's standards; nonetheless, that evening, the routine of work would change forever. Later that night, he would pull out his new gadget, wait for the strange noise and a flashy cursor-thingy. He'd fumble through a clunky user-interface, and with luck, be able to find the 'file' he was supposed to 'open' on his 'hard drive'. At the time, these were all very new terms. And as time passed, CJ's career grew, and the power and breadth of devices to help his work become less location-bound, CJ would find himself stealing time from other important areas of his life to 'get caught up' or 'get ahead' with work. While this allowed his career to seemingly progress faster, when he became a business owner and a father all at the same time, it would take him 4 or 5 years to understand how devastating his obsession with work was becoming. CJ's since learned to practice a much more balance life with firm boundaries between work and everything else. 5 Annoying Things that Keep You From Being Really Productive (And How to Begin Addressing Them) Notifications - Keep them off by default. Emails, texts, pushes, payments, reminders, deals, coupons, alerts... this goes for your Apple watch or smart watch as well SOLUTION: Turn them off, get a separate alarm clock. Make regular times of checking what is most important to you, rather than to the email list you are on. Time Vampires - one quick question can turn into 10-20 minutes or more, plus another 7-20 minutes to get back in the groove. Two or three questions and you've lost a huge part of your day. SOLUTION: Close your door, turn on and be visibly in 'Do Not Disturb' mode. Schedule regular time for employees to meet with you for anything not absolutely urgent. Leave your laptop at the office - If your office is a table at Starbucks, maybe this isn't for you, but if you have a coworkers you trust, non-sensitive information and otherwise no reason to worry about security issues, you take advantage of the opportunity to free yourself from being shackled to your computer. No computer, not as much work. SOLUTION: Even if you can't physically keep yourself away from your computer, you can turn it off, keep it stashed somewhere inconvenient. But whatever you do, keep it as far away from your bed as possible. Short charging cables - Charging cords for smartphones are just long enough to read your bedside table. And since our phone is the last thing we check before we got to bed, for most of us, it's the very first thing we do in the morning... even before throwing off the covers. SOLUTION: Plug your charger into an outlet in another room. Make a pledge to not check your phone after a specific time and stick with it. Train the aforementioned Time Vampires not to expect an immediate response or any response during times you've set aside. Digital tasks and note pads - When we think of something, but don't write it down, we create a feedback loop that throws our momentum off. We think that by analyze the thought right then and there, we can determine whether or not it could be beneficial to our present situation to pursue further. However most the time these aren't good ideas or the timing isn't right, so we can't do anything with it. We have no choice but the continue to entertain the ideation process though because some of our ideas are really good and can be capitalized upon. SOLUTION: Get a tiny notepad or journal from the 99¢ store, keep it with you at all times, and jot down the ideas you have. You'll then be able to go back and revisit the idea when you are refreshed and avoid creating a feedback loop that drives you crazy and unfocused.
