Interested to learn more about Whole 30, Paleo, or the even more extreme Carnivore Diet? Or hate them all and wonder why anyone would follow these approaches? In this episode, I give a (mostly) unbiased overview of Whole30, Paleo, Primal, Carnivore, and the Lion Diet -  reviewing a brief history of each, the principles of how to follow them, potential health benefits, who should or shouldn't try such approaches, and more. I'm also joined by holistic nutritionist, Alicia Dowell of Revival Wellness, who shares her experience with Whole30. This is the seventh episode in our 8 part series all about helping you "Find your Food Fit" - a plan for how to structure your every day eating in a way that fits with your lifestyle, preferences, health goals, budget, and more. Says You! Paleo, Primal, and “Caveman” Diets Are Better than Flexible Dieting

Did early humans have a better, more nutritious diet than we do? That's the idea behind popular “ancestral eating” diets like paleo and primal. The pitch appeals to people who believe “caveman” hunter-gatherers were stronger, faster, more robust, and just plain healthier than our modern-day selves. Is that true, though? Should we be eating like our ancient ancestors, avoiding more modern foods like grains, dairy, and other processed foods? Will it help us live longer or shed fat effortlessly? In this podcast, I'll answer these questions and address the topic of “evolutionarily-consistent” eating and dieting. I've written and recorded a lot of evidence-based content over the years on just about everything you can imagine related to building muscle, losing fat, and getting healthy. I've also worked with thousands of men and women of all ages and circumstances and helped them get into the best shape of their lives. That doesn't mean you should blindly swallow everything I say, though, because let's face it—nobody is always right about everything. And especially in fields like diet and exercise, which are constantly evolving thanks to the efforts of honest and hardworking researchers and thought leaders. This is why I'm always happy to hear from people who disagree with me, especially when they have good arguments and evidence to back up their assertions. Sometimes I can't get on board with their positions, but sometimes I end up learning something, and either way, I always appreciate the discussion. That gave me the idea for this series of podcast episodes: publicly addressing things people disagree with me on and sharing my perspective. Think of it like a spicier version of a Q&A. So, here's what I'm doing: Every couple of weeks, I'm asking my Instagram followers what they disagree with me on, and then picking the more common or interesting contentions to address here on the podcast. And in this episode, I'll be tackling the following . . . What are your thoughts on evolutionarily consistent dieting, including those who claim you can get every nutrient necessary for optimal human health from animals, organ meats, fruit, and honey? --- Timestamps: 0:00 - My free quiz to answer all your diet questions: www.muscleforlife.show/dietquiz 4:11 What is evolutionary consistent dieting? 6:15 - Were cavemen healthier? 16:41 - What are the benefits of evolutionary dieting? --- Mentioned on the Show: Take this free quiz to get science-based answers to all of your diet questions: www.muscleforlife.show/dietquiz

The course will cover topics such as finite natural resources, the importance of biodiversity and the effects of climate change, alongside the necessity to minimise personal carbon footprints.   1. Acne for Pre-Teen Boy [14:28] Heather says: Hi Robb & Nicki, Thanks so much for your podcast. I've been a follower for years. My son has eaten a mostly primal diet (he drinks organic milk and eats organic cheese & butter) since he was in preschool, but I do allow him to cheat once a week on school pizza or at birthday parties. (He's the only one in our family that does not show a sensitivity to gluten). However, he is twelve, going on thirteen and he is beginning to show acne, which of course is natural at this age. My husband suffered from bad acne during his teenage years and believes that anti-bacterial soap is the best solution. But that goes against every cell in my body. I see this as a hormone issue and wonder if you know of a better solution (doesn't antibacterial soap kill our good bacteria, too?). I did mention to my son that he might think about giving up the dairy (even though its organic), but he did not like that idea. Do you have any other solutions that could make my son happy (and possibly keep my marriage together? ;-) ) Thanks for any insights! Heather 2. Imodium - Brain Related Issues [21:51] John says: Hi Robb! I've heard you mention that using immodium has helped you with your BMs. I've always been a person on the "loose" side of things. I've experimented with 2mg of immodium in the morning and 2mg in the evening. This has been a game changer for me. There's less "urge" to go, and more consistent and satisfying poops. I also feel like I'm absorbing my nutrients and have put on muscle mass as a results. I also take Microbiome Labs' MegaSpore and MegaMucosa... They're incredible supplements for gut health. But even then, nothing has worked like immodium for slowing transit time in the gut. I've heard that immodium acts similarly to an opiate, but in the intestines. Is there a danger with long term use? From what I know, opiates can have negative effects on the brain, mood, depression, etc. I'm wondering if you have any insight into this topic? P.S. It was awesome to meet you at Paleo FX. You're one of my heroes and The Paleo Solution changed my life. 3. Water Consumption Goal? [27:59] Stephanie says: Hi Robb! I listened to your podcast with Dr. Ruscio and you mentioned that we are told to drink too much water and that there is no data that actually supports drinking half your weight on ounces of water. What is sufficient for hydration? I do drink coffee in the mornings so I'm not sure if that changes anything. 4. Protein Preferred Metabolism [35:06] Jeff says: Robb, Assuming a metabolically healthy individual, is it possible for someone to have a metabolism that runs best on a very high protein and very low fat and very low carbohydrate diet? I'm talking 2 to 3 times body weight in grams of protein and near PSMF levels of carbs and fats. My 30 second life story if it helps. I weighed 300 pounds as a teenager, lost 60 of those pounds through unhealthy pursuits in Slimfast and vegan land, and continued to lose another 75 pounds over the past ten years through various forms of Paleo/Primal/ancestral approved protocols. I've done every variation of macronutrient setup one can concoct, but always feel my best when consuming obscene amounts of lean protein only. Is this nutritional preference viable and metabolically sustainable? Did I break myself so badly as a teenager that this is the only remaining option? Am I morally obliged to offset my sins as a roughage humping vegan from decades past? I'm aware of the possible pitfalls this type of diet presents, but can't seem to sustain other protocols that support my Look/Feel/Perform objectives. Speaking of which, mine are: -Look: lean and muscular -Feel: steady physical and mental energy -Perform: build muscle and be awesome Thank you so much for your wisdom. You have and continue to be such an impactful influence in my life. Keep up the good fight! -Jeff PS - Sacred Cow is a triumph! 5. Salt and Diarrhea [41:48] Shaun says: I have been Keto for 3 years and strict carnivore now for 18 months. As of today I am 40KG lighter than I was at the start of this journey. After lots of experimenting I have found that my tolerance for salt is much less than it use to be. In short, if I don't get enough salt (~6-9g a day, although I have gone as high as 12g) I feel lethargic, light headed etc - the general malaise you get with low sodium. However, more recently I have found even 6gs of salt will cause a flushing effect and give me fairly instant diarrhoea. Titrating my salt intake down stops the diarrhoea but I seem to be constantly walking this tight rope between Orthostatic hypotension and disaster pants when I get a bit too friendly with the salt shaker. Do you think this lower tolerance could be my body trying regulate the balance of sodium and potassium or something else? do you have any tips on managing salt intake and mitigating the flushing effect? I.e. would it be better to space the sodium intake out rather than larger boluses? is it better to take salt with water or without water? etc. for background I have found as I have got leaner and leaner I require much more fat for satiety and currently hit 1.6g/kg of protein and fill up the rest of my calories with lots of animal fat. I also eat a tonne of liver, kidney and heart. Since March I have been doing a summer cut so I am currently in a fairly deep calorie deficit which could be a confounder. currently 65kg ~10% BF (Ketogains calculator puts me at 8%). Thanks for your time and all your efforts. Btw I loved the sacred cow book! Kind Regards Shaun Sponsor: This episode of The Healthy Rebellion Radio is sponsored by White Oak Pastures. The ketogenic diet has gained a lot of popularity in the past couple of years. If you’re not quite sure what it is, why it could be beneficial, or you’re well-acquainted with it and just want to learn more, this episode is for you. The ketogenic diet, or keto as it’s called, is a high-fat low carbohydrate diet. While some people take this to mean loads of conventionally raised meat and dairy, the true (and beneficial version) means lots of beneficial fats from things like avocados, nuts and seeds, and coconut; high-quality protein from clean sources like grass-fed meat and pasture-raised eggs; and plenty of non-starchy vegetables. To hash out more of the details about keto and how it can support good health, I was excited to talk with my friend and one of the leading voices in the Paleo/Primal and keto movements, Mark Sisson. Naysayers often dismiss the Paleo lifestyle with the claim that it is simply a fad. But if you start at the beginning and explore what early humans were eating two million years ago, it becomes clear that the animal fat diet not only sustained our early ancestors but actually led to the development of our species. So if the Paleo movement is a fad, it’s a pretty persistent one! Today’s guest is no stranger to the pushback against the lifestyle, and he’s here to explain how the latest science and technology support his understanding of Paleo as the perfect human diet. CJ Hunt dropped dead at the age of 24. He was a dirt bike racer training to come back from an injury when he suffered full cardiac arrest while jogging. Paramedics resuscitated CJ, and he spent ten days in the ICU at UCLA Medical Center. Doctors eventually determined that he suffers from a birth defect in which the center of his heart is twice as thick as normal, and his left chamber is smaller. He was told that if he continued to exercise, he would be lucky to live for another two years. This experience inspired CJ’s curiosity in health and well-being, and ultimately led him to back to school at the age of 53 to earn a degree in Electronic Communications Arts from San Francisco State University so that he could produce the world’s first Paleo documentary, The Perfect Human Diet. The film reached #1 in the categories of Documentary Film and Independent Film on both iTunes USA and iTunes Canada when it was released in 2013. Together with its companion book, the movie introduces a system of optimal nutrition based on the latest science. Today CJ explains how nutrition has become so much like religion and politics, why public policy lags behind the best science, and the roots of the pushback against the Paleo/Primal movement. Listen in to understand the fundamentals of Paleo nutrition and why this two million-year-old ‘fad’ is making a comeback! Topics Covered [2:47] How CJ developed an interest in studying nutrition ‘Dropped dead’ at 24, given just a few years to live Began to study health and well-being [3:57] The evolution of CJ’s eating habits Sustained raw vegan diet for five years Mother killed by drunk driver, diet wasn’t helping recover from life trauma Gained muscle and recovered physically on animal protein [8:18] CJ’s approach to the film Best way to deconstruct massive problem is go back to beginning Explore what humans ate, how healthy they were Conduct guided investigation in search of perfect human diet [10:51] The ‘football field’ analogy of human evolution 70% of current diet only available since industrial revolution (a mere 91 years ago) As early ancestors continued to eat more animal foods, our brains developed (two million years ago) This is how we became human (160,000-200,000 years ago) [13:18] Nutrition as a belief system (rather than based in facts) People who’ve invested in a particular way of life resist new info [15:19] Nutrition and public policy Government not educating people with most current science First nutritional guidelines written by politicians’ staffers Food pyramid has become food plate, but not much change in basic information Grains and plants as foundation (though doesn’t hold up to rigorous science) Roadblocks in government due to vested interests Idea spread from ‘bottom up’ [19:47] The ‘feed lot pyramid’ Ratio of elements of food pyramid same as pig chow used to fatten up swine [21:04] How First Nations people respond to Paleo diet vs. westerners Instinctively found connections based on understanding of ancestors’ habits Namgis ancestors harvested fish, consumed very few fruits/vegetables Many becoming obese on standard American diet, recovered on Paleo Westerners disconnected from where food comes from (no spiritual connection) [24:56] Why CJ developed a companion book to complement the film People were writing to ask, “Can I eat this?” True understanding of concepts leads to long-term change Film limited on time, book goes deeper into the why Book clearly delineates human vs. non-human foods Audience finds film through book and vice versa [30:20] Why CJ is developing a sequel Much misinformation regarding health and sustainability Talk to world-class scientists to clarify understanding (i.e.: regenerative agriculture) [34:01] The pushback against the Paleo/Primal movement Discounted as fad Some vegetarians attack ‘If they’re upset, you’re doing something right’  Learn More About CJ Hunt  CJ Hunt Reports The Perfect Human Diet Documentary The Perfect Human Diet Companion Book  Resources Mentioned Protein Power: The High-Protein/Low Carbohydrate Way to Lose Fat, Feel Fit, and Boost Your Health – in Just Weeks! by Michael R. You may not even know it, but your gut is probably troubled if you have any complaints about your health…and this includes your weight. The Paleo & Primal Diets focus on mimicking how our ancestors ate as closely as possible, using foods available now. Followers say it will help minimize your risk of chronic disease and lead to weight loss. What you Eat: Meat from animals raised the way nature intended (grass-fed beef, pasture-raised chicken) wild-caught fish, fresh vegetables & fruits, eggs, nuts, seeds, healthy oils like olive and avocado, and small amounts of raw honey and maple syrup. What You Don't Eat: Processed foods. Grains, Legumes, vegetable seed oils and refined sugar. The true Paleo diet also outlaws dairy, although many followers disagree and do eat foods like grass-fed butter and Greek yogurt. Primal was created by Mark Sission in the Primal Blueprint, and it allows some more exceptions like dairy or legumes if they are tolerated.Low-FODMAPIBS affects 1 in 5 Americans. Often the cause lies in short-chain carbohydrates, also called high FODMAP foods. FODMAP stands for Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides, and Polyols. The tricky thing about identifying high FODMAP foods is that they are found in a lot of different food groups...even fruits and vegetables. We highly suggest you work with a health coach or dietitian to follow this diet appropriately.Need more info? Message us on the Facebook page for Foundation of Wellness PodcastLinks mentioned: Coaching: https://www.jessicadogert.com/collaborations/Free Download: https://www.marisamoon.com/whyIntro/Exit Music - "Ukulele Whistle" by Scott Holmes

We all go on our own journeys with food. I’ve gone through quite a few phases in my journey – from hardcore vegetarian to hardcore raw protein to, now, something more balanced and less inflammatory. Now I don’t care what you eat – you can eat a sofa if you want – but a lot of people mindlessly eat more than their fair share, a lot of the time. That doesn’t help you, and it doesn’t help the world. The key to finding the optimal diet for your body is appreciating your food, and being more conscious about when it serves you and when it doesn’t. Of course, we live in a fast-paced world. Finding and preparing the best food doesn't always feel easy – and that’s where today’s guest, Jasmine Hemsley, comes in. Jasmine is a wellbeing expert and creator of the East by West, a modern take on Ayurvedic principles & recipes for today’s busy world. Beginning with a pop up cafe in London, East by West is now a cookbook containing 140 delicious (and simple) recipes that focus on using the ancient Ayurvedic philosophy of eating to nourish, sustain, and repair. The Vedic lifestyle isn’t about strict rules or regulations, and it’s really a lot less stressful than most diets – it’s simply a philosophy for living well that emphasizes bringing balance into your lifestyle.   Simple Ways of Finding the Right Diet http://learntruehealth.com/finding-the-right-diet/ People nowadays are getting more health-conscious. Food just used to be a source of survival, but it is now a primary way to help our body reach optimal health. But with so many diets around, what is the best technique in finding the right diet? My guest today, KJ Landis is not a stranger to dieting. Like me, Landis struggled so many years finding the right diet. But despite Landis' active lifestyle, the weight just couldn't stay off. It was frustrating! To those who have not heard of her, KJ Landis is a fantastic author and health expert. On this episode, Landis shares valuable tips on finding the right diet and how to maintain your ideal weight. Her weight loss journey is truly inspiring. Recovering From Pain Landis revealed that used to be obese as a child. The sadness she felt seemed endless and overwhelming because apparently, she was molested by relatives from age 7 to 12. When she turned 12 years old and celebrated her bar mitzvah, Landis finally took hold of her life. With her newfound courage, she finally faced her perpetrators. When Landis refused the abuse, only then was she able to shed her pain. Battle Of The Bulge Life seemed to pass by in a blur. Years later, Landis landed a job working at the Hilton in San Francisco where she stayed for 15 years. As years went by, Landis gradually packed on the pounds. By the time she was 46 years old, she has gained a total of 50 lbs. Hence, Landis decided to undergo liposuction. Landis was all set after paying a down payment for her liposuction. However, her husband insisted the procedure is pointless. He believed Landis would gain all the weight back if she didn't focus on finding the right diet instead. "I looked into other options, and HCG intrigued me," Landis shared. "After seven weeks of daily research, I decided to go on an HCG diet." HCG Diet Landis began the HCG diet in January 2012. She followed HCG Body For Life protocol with Colin F. Watson. Then in 60 days, Landis lost 50 pounds. Now that's amazing! First of all, HCG is a hormone that is naturally found in every human. And Landis says that for one to use HCG, you have to use an injection aside from getting a prescription. The next important thing to remember when you're on an HCG diet is to drink water. In fact, Landis drank a gallon of water everyday. Consequently, when you increase water in your diet slowly, Landis says you can identify if you're hungry or merely emotionally and socially hungry. "The HCG is not meant to be a yo-yo diet. It's intended to be a permanent lifestyle change. All diets are eating lifestyles," explains Landis. So if I want my eating lifestyle to be a permanent change, it's to re-educate how we are supposed to eat." Eating The Right Kind Of Food However, Landis didn't stop there. Losing so much weight motivated her to research how to keep the weight off. Making an effort to stay gluten-free and dairy-free is not easy. Even eating whole foods can be a challenge. But all successful endeavors take some amount of effort before it can be achieved. Apparently, the secret lies in being able to identify every ingredient in the food that you eat. Consequently, the hard work paid off. When Landis succeeded in proving the benefits of choosing the right kind of food to eat, people started asking advice. That's when Landis decided to create her protocol. Basic Rules of Eating Healthy "Re-educate yourself on how humans are supposed to eat in the ancient ways," said Landis. The following are some of Landis' suggestions on how to gradually change what you eat: • Slowly increase calories and fat. • Eat healthy protein. • Add fruits, vegetables, and carbohydrates to your diet. • Rarely eat anything made from grains or processed, refined sugar. • Eat lots of fish and seafood, organ meats and raw, unpasteurized dairy. • Avoid processed food. • Eat high fats and healthy fats. Eat Well, Be Well Protocol This is the 9-week solution that Landis developed. Many clients have attested that it is efficient and the results are amazing! An overview of the program is as follows: • Week #1 Increase water • Week #2 Eliminate gluten • Week #3 Reduce all grains • Week #4 Reduce fruits from your diet to one or two times a day • Week #5 Reduce fruits from your diet to one or two times a week • Week #6 Swap out the fats • Week #7 No more sugar in any form • Week #8 Consume raw dairy, pasteurized eggs and chicken, wild crop meat, and fish • Week #9 Give up beans and legumes Solid Support Group Landis credits her weight loss success to a support group, most especially her husband. She says that because her husband believed in her ability to write a book, Landis now has four publications sharing her knowledge on finding the right diet. Initially, Landis started her information campaign via health and wellness workshops at the San Francisco Public Library. The free workshops covered a broad range of topics like good and bad fats, fermented foods, as well as health benefits of chocolate, wine, and yogurts. 'I Am' Statements But what good is changing what you eat when you are not entirely convinced it would work? This is why Landis says you must learn to align your emotional and mental mindset. She recommends keeping a journal to write down your big 'why' and repeat it every day. "Write down three things daily, and write these statements starting with 'I am.' When you have an 'I am' statement, it is a positive psychology statement," explains Landis. Furthermore, Landis explains that when you consistently repeat the 'I am' statements, you create neuro pathways in the brain. Hence, your life will have a new belief system. The new belief system in effect will create an action that will model the lifestyle that you desire. I think Landis' technique is useful. Because when you verbally declare you want something, it creates conflict inside. There is resentment, and you tend to blame others. On the other hand, when you say 'I am' and 'I have,' you are in effect, taking responsibility. It allows you to see an image of yourself in the future. To further illustrate, Landis recalls a period wherein she had a back problem. Because it was inflamed, it took her a month to recover. Throughout that whole time, Landis felt like a failure. Landis initially doubted her credibility to be a health coach. But then she reminded herself of the 'I am' statements for her to change her life. For 30 days, Landis repeatedly told herself that she was pain-free. True enough, she was back in action in 30 days! Super Self With KJ Landis Landis' website is such a wealth of information. One aspect that everyone should check out is her section on recipes. Most of the recipes can be made in 30 minutes or less. And it tastes just as good as it looks for sure! KJ Landis is an author, educator, former model, health and life coach, photographer and role model. She has inspired thousands with her holistic approach to health and wellness. Her ability to communicate effectively, compassionately, and with patience has helped build the self-esteem and attainment of others' life goals. Landis grew up the youngest of five children in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She was taught that food equaled love, and she was greatly loved. At age 12, she was 5'2" and 173 pounds. Her doctors told her parents that if KJ continued to eat in a current manner, she would be a heart attack candidate within months. This scared her parents and the 12 year old into learning about portion control and nutrient dense foods that were beneficial to a young girl's wellness. The next two years saw a 40-pound weight loss, a height increase of 8 inches, and a newfound love of exercise. Then the pendulum swung in the opposite direction. 180 Nutrition Today we welcome entrepreneur, health and fitness enthusiast and top bloke Josh Sparks. Josh is the founder of the hugely successful Thr1ve cafe/restaurant chain, which can be found in most CBD food courts. In a nutshell they make real food, real fast, and it is a place I actively seek out to dine at when I'm in the neighbourhood. Stu and I had a huge amount of fun with this podcast as we tap into Josh's wealth of experience when it comes to the food industry, his own personal journey and paleo discoveries and how he stays on top of his own health with his very hectic lifestyle! Trust me, after listening to this podcast you will be inspired to take action on whatever your own goals or endeavours are :)   In This Episode: The biggest lessons he's learned since cleaning up his diet How to navigate your way around a food court to make healthy choices His daily routines and how he stays in great shape! Why he enjoys being bad at meditation What stress and your life's purpose have in common Josh's favourite & most influential books:- Antifragile by Nassim Nicholas Taleb - Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas by Hunter S. Thompson - All books by Tim Ferriss - Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind by Shunryu Suzuki - All things by Tony Robbins And much much more...   Take the Quiz & Discover Your #1 Health & Weight Loss Road Block Here: http://bit.ly/1Nkr4RE Transcript Guy Lawrence: Hey, this is Guy Lawrence at 180 Nutrition and welcome to today’s Health Sessions. I’ve been very much looking forward to today’s guest, because it’s safe to say he is a entrepreneur, but not only that, a very healthy one. You know, from myself and Stu’s experience in developing and running 180, it’s all well and good us doing podcasts, creating posts, developing new products and all the rest of it. But it can become very stressful and we have to look after our own health at the same time and it can actually be very challenging sometimes. So, I was very keen to pick today’s guest’s brains, because he does a very good job of that. His name is Josh Sparks and he is the founder of the THR1VE cafeteria chain here in Australia. Now, if you’re not aware of the THR1VE cafeteria chain, in a nutshell, they do real food, real fast. And if you’re in most CBDs in Australia you can go into a THR1VE café and actually have a really great meal. It’s one of the places that I will seek out and find when I’m in the city, no matter which one it is here in Australia. You know, Josh’s background; it’s basically 14 years in high-growth leadership roles as CEO in the fashion industry, mainly, of sass & bide, managing director from Urban Outfitters and CEO of Thom Browne in New York, as well. Whopping amounts of experience, but then he’s gone and taken that and started to develop his own cafeteria chain, which is what we talked to him about today. He says now he’s been eating, moves and recovers according to the ancestral health principles now for all the last five years and he’s probably fitter and stronger than he was 20 years ago. More importantly what he does stress as well is that his blood markers of health were improved dramatically as well. So, Josh was consistently astounded, you could say, by the lack of authentic healthy dinning in top areas within the CBDs. So, he helped and did something about it and has created a very, very successful brand about it. We get to talk about all them things. His own health journey and even what goes on in the food courts, which there were some things he said in there that is quite shocking what can go on. So, we delve into all of them things, which is fantastic. So, I’m sure you’re going to enjoy. Now, last but not least, you may be aware that we are, yes, we are live in the USA. So, for all you guys in America that are listening to this podcast, 180 Super Food, you can get your hands on it. You just need to go to 180nutrition.com. If you’re unsure what it really is; I always tell people it’s a convenient way to replace bad foods, really quickly. So, I generally have a smoothie; I can mix it with a bit of water or coconut water, if I’ve been training, some berries and I normally put a bit of avocado and I make a smoothie. Especially if I’m out and about, going into meetings in the city or whatever and I know I’m stretched from time I will make a big liter of it and sip on it and it gets me through to my next meal. So, yeah, you can do that. Go over to 180nutrition.com and check it out. Anyway, let’s go over to Josh and enjoy today’s show. Thanks. Guy Lawrence: All right. I always get this little turn every time. Anyway … Hey, this is Guy Lawrence. I’m joined with Stuart Cooke. Hey, Stewie! Stuart Cooke: Hello, buddy. Guy Lawrence: And our awesome guest today is Josh Sparks. Josh, welcome to the show. Josh Sparks: Thanks guys. Thanks for having me. Guy Lawrence: Now, look, very excited, mate. I think today’s topics are going to be great. We’re going to certainly want to cover a few things, especially like bringing Mr. Paleo Primal himself over, Mark Sisson, earlier in the year for the THR1VE symposium; which was awesome, by the way. Josh Sparks: Oh, great. Guy Lawrence: And of course the THR1VE brand itself and how you’ve taken the food courts kind of head on with the THR1VE cafeteria chain. So, there’ll be lots to discuss, mate, so, very much looking forward to it. Josh Sparks: I’m excited to be here. Guy Lawrence: So, before all that, we get into those subjects, what did you used to do before you got in the health industry? Josh Sparks: Before I did THR1VE? Guy Lawrence: Yeah. Josh Sparks: So, my journey has been a fairly interesting one. I studied law and I worked very briefly in mergers and acquisitions law and decided, as I think many young lawyers do, that law school is not the same as being a lawyer and got out of that fairly promptly. And then for the bulk of my career, the last 15 years prior to THR1VE, I was in various fashion businesses. So, all retail, I guess THR1VE is a retail, but fashion and lifestyle focus, never food. So, I was the first CEO of sass & bide, which is an Australian women’s label that some of your listeners may be familiar with. And then I moved to the U.S. and became the CEO of Thom Browne of New York, which is a men’s line in New York. And then I moved to Philadelphia and ran the ecommerce business at Anthropologie, which is part of the Urban Outfitters group. So, all fashion; tons of fun. You know, the really interesting thing about fashion and I think how it relates to what you guys are doing, and what I’m doing, what any of us are trying to strike out on our own and create a brand is that within the fashion industry what you’re really doing is storytelling. You’re building brands around what is otherwise largely a commodity product. The $30 jeans use the same denim as the $200 jeans. So, it’s really about the creativity you can bring to the design and the creativity you can bring to the storytelling to really set it apart. So, I think that that’s what I loved about the fashion industry. On the flip side my personal passion, really my whole life, has been around health and wellness. Every since I was a high school and college athlete, I’ve always been particularly interested in the intersection of training modalities, training methodologies and nutrition and how to best support each and really ultimately the synergy between the two. But as I got older, while I was doing all this fashion stuff, I think I experienced what so many of us do and I started to … my body wasn’t responding quite the way I wanted and my thinking that you could steer the ship through exercise started to be challenged by the evidence that confronted me in the mirror every morning and on the scales and in the gym and I just wasn’t performing or looking or feeling quite as I did. So, I started to explore the nutrition side much more actively. Until then, I think like a lot of guys in their 20s and early 30s, it’s much more about training for a while, or at least it was for me and perhaps my generation. Do you need to avoid eating sugar all the time or just at the same time as eating fat (eg. apples + bananas in a high fat smoothie) or is there a timing aspect to it? Can you clarify how this effects heart health? -In my response I mention a . 5 Ways To Stay Awake Without Coffee Becca says:She needs help staying awake. She is a 22-year-old personal trainer with an active lifestyle who struggles to stay awake while sitting still and paying attention (ie. in class, in church, driving). Should he be worried about his potassium levels? Why are they on the rise? -In my response I mention my and also Stomach Problems During Long Runs Derrick says: He has done some serious ultra running and using your advice from the podcast his recovery and performance has been increasing exponentially... but has noticed that during long runs (over 8 hours) his ability to ingest sugar decreases dramatically to the point that he is unable to run (ends up in a drunken waddle). He has been trying out and chewing every 20 minutes, which has helped, but his stomach still sours. How can he increase his ability to ingest sugars and is there anything he can take to help settle his stomach during the race? -In my response I mention: and What Are The Best Blood Sugar Controllers? Eric says: We all know you prefer for blood sugar control but how do you feel about (Berberine HCL and Banaba Leaf Extract) that Jimmy Moore is always talking about? -In my response I mention How To Gain Body Fat In A Healthy Way Greg says:He is looking for a way to increase his body fat (not necessarily his weight) in a healthy way. He is over 6 feet tall but only 53kg and 5% body fat. Is there a specific amount of calories he should eat and, perhaps more importantly, what should the percentage of fat, carbs and protein be? There are a lot of opinions out there around what percentage is appropriate especially for someone trying to gain fat. -In my response I mention . What Is The Best Kind of Electrotherapy? Paul says:How does the ARPwave compare to the Compex Electrostim Unit? He has been using the ARPwave to cure a very tight calf muscle at a local sport clinic and it worked very quickly. Can he switch to a Compex? -In my response I mention the Is DNA Testing Worth It? Roberto (alldamnday28) says:He is wondering about the DNA testing he has been seeing commercials for on the TV (which he knows he shouldn't be watching). Is this effective? Is it worth looking into? How could this help him in the long run? -In my response I mention ----------------------------------------------------- -- And don't forget to go to -- Prior to asking your question, do a search in upper right hand corner of this website for the keywords associated with your question. Denny Hemingson contacted me a few months ago via email and told me about the great success he's had with a Wild Diet-lifestyle. The kicker of all this? He's actually the band leader for Tim McGraw's back-up band. If anyone has some great insight on how to live Paleo/Primal on the road, this is the episode for you! In other exciting news, I am just getting back from Victoria, Canada. I was up there recording with Dave Asprey for a brand new show we'll be doing all about biohacking. AIR DATE: June 13, 2013 at 7PM ETFEATURED EXPERT: FEATURED TOPIC: "All Things Thyroid (Thyroid 201)" The thyroid gland serves one of the most under-appreciated and yet totally misunderstood functions within the human body. If someone is dealing with excessive weight on their body, you might hear them say something along the lines of it being due to having a bad thyroid. But there's got to be more to it than that, right? What is at the root cause of why your thyroid might not be functioning at optimal levels? And what steps can be taken to fix these thyroid issues without resorting to taking potentially harmful prescription medications? That's what we'll be exploring with a Walnut Creek, CA-based functional medicine physician named  (listen to my interview with him in ). Dr. Ruscio specializes in the subject of thyroid health (and has  to tell) which is why he will being joining us to talk about "All Things Thyroid (Thyroid 201)." You might recall we had the great  on to talk about this subject back in  to give a Thyroid 101 introduction to the topic. But Dr. Ruscio will help us dig even deeper into answering YOUR most pressing questions about thyroid health and how it relates to your healthy low-carb, Paleo lifestyle. If you want to get a taste for what his teaching style is like, then be sure to check out  for lots of informative videos on this subject and more. Dr. Ruscio joined us in Episode 39 of "Ask The Low-Carb Experts" to keep the conversation going on the vital importance of attaining and maintaining good thyroid health. Here are just a few of the questions we addressed in this podcast: DANIELLA ASKS: I'm a 36-year old mother who recently started eating a low-carb Paleo lifestyle. I consume 1500-1600 calories most days and take in about 50-60g of carbohydrates daily. My energy is great and I look and feel the best I have ever felt in my life. Sleep and athletic performance are incredible as well and my muscle definition at 5’3” tall and 110 pounds has never been better. My only concern is that I take 60mg Armour thyroid daily and I am concerned that my low-carb diet may interfere with thyroid function. I feel like I eat adequate calories most of the time, but should I be concerned? My last labs showed everything to be good: TSH 0.6, Free T3 at 2.2, free T4 at .8. KATHERINE ASKS: I'm 39 years old and I've been on a low-carb diet (40-70g carb per day) for 22 months in response to pre-diabetic blood sugar levels. Since changing my diet, my T3 has dropped and is now borderline low. Initial thyroid tests 22 months ago were all normal. I've done some casual reading in recent months that a low-carb diet can suppress thyroid function. In other places I've read it can help it. Can you please help clear up this confusing issue? & NANCY ASKS: I have actually been struggling with the low-carb concept out of fear of ruining my thyroid. There is so much conflicting information out there with regards to low-carb being bad or good for thyroid. I’ve heard that women should not be on a low-carb diet for too long or at all because of the risks to their thyroid function. I am already obese at 5'1" and 184 pounds and I feel lost and not sure which nutritional path to take. KEN ASKS: I've been eating Paleo over the last year and recently had an NMR test. My LDL particle count was very high at 1403 with my small LDL coming in at 492. HDL is 62 and triglycerides are 50. I was wondering if you could further explain the role the thyroid plays in the particle count levels and whether those of us eating a low-carb Paleo diet should be worried. It seems many of us eating this way, including Jimmy, have high LDL-P and I’m curious if our way of eating is making this happen. JUNE ASKS: Do you have a preference between Armour vs. Nature Thyroid? RICK ASKS: What are your thoughts on treating thyroid disease with high levels of iodine supplementation? WENDY ASKS: I have been taking 30 mg of Armour Thyroid and have been Paleo/Primal since Jan 2011. I eat fish 2x per week. I avoid raw cruciferous veggies and take a drop or two of a concentrated iodine supplement weekly as I don't want to overdo it. I recently started adding kelp sprinkles daily to my food and would like to stop having to take thyroid medications if at all possible. Is this doable? JACKIE ASKS: I had thyroid cancer in 2008 and had a total thyroidectomy. I'm currently taking 200 mcg of Synthroid daily. Since the thyroid controls metabolism, how do I increase my metabolism to lose weight? I’m 57 years old, 5'2" tall and weigh 260 pounds. DEANNA ASKS: I did the HCG diet over 2 years ago and lost nearly 40 pounds. Since then I have slowly gained almost all of it back. I am having hypothyroid symptoms (hair loss, brittle nails, cold hands and feet) the main one being a total inability to lose weight no matter how hard I try. I eat mostly Paleo. What are your thoughts about the HCG diet and its effect on thyroid function? I have read that it could affect reverse T3 but there are a lot of functional medicine doctors advocating it. PAUL ASKS: What are Dr. Ruscio’s thoughts on the Endocrine Society's updated clinical practice guidelines for the management of thyroid health in pregnancy? They seem to be quite controversial. LINDA ASKS: I read that eating one Brazil nut a day is enough to bring up a low thyroid to normal levels. Is that true? What other foods can help with this? JASON ASKS: Is the excessive fluoride typically added to the drinking water in local municipalities something to be worried about because of iodine absorption issues and by extension be a contributor to hypothyroidism? INGE FROM MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA ASKS: I lost weight after my sister died in 1993 and at the age of 40 I developed a taste for alcohol that killed my thyroid. For 10 years the specialist put me on Thyroxin until my blood pressure became very high due to a lack of T3 stimulation. She then put me on 7 grains of thyroid extract and I started losing weight again. I’m now seeing an integrative doctor who is not happy about this high dosage of thyroid extract. He told me to back off of it and now I’m gaining weight again putting on 8 kg, I sleep 10 hours a night, I retain fluid, I can no longer exercise because I’m so exhausted all the time and I have severe brain fog. Do you have any suggestions for me? MELANIE ASKS: I just got diagnosed with Adrenal Fatigue that according to my doctor is causing Functional Hypothyroidism. So my Free T3 and T4 were in the normal range, but at the lower end. I need to fix the adrenal fatigue issue but I also need to be supporting my thyroid so that it doesn’t get any worse. I'm pretty familiar with ways to support the thyroid, but wanted to ask the opinion on taking animal glandulars. I wonder if Dr. Ruscio is familiar with the Xymogen T-150 thyroid support product (a freeze-dried, BSE-free, bovine, multi-glandular, mineral and herbal formula to support healthy thyroid function). Do you have an opinion on it? My doctor wants me taking it. ROGER ASKS: Before I went low-carb Paleo, I knew my thyroid wasn’t functioning well. My Free T3 and T4 levels were horrible and I was feeling sluggish. Is a short-term supplementation of pregnenolone a good way to boost thyroid health and balance other hormones? CATHY ASKS: I started Synthroid for hypothyroidism in January and quickly developed a bad case of acne. Is this just a coincidence or did the medication cause this? AMBERLY ASKS: The thyroid tests done by my doctor were all normal, but then I started going to another doctor who specializes in bio-identical hormone replacement. He said that one of them was low, maybe the Free T3. He put me on Armour thyroid to treat it. When I asked him if this could have any negative effects, he said that it could shut my thyroid down, but that since my thyroid wasn't functioning as well as it needed to on its own. Thus, he convinced me it would make sense to go ahead and start the Armour since it wasn't going to get any better on its own anyway. My Free T3 is now slightly too high. Do you agree with this doctor’s aggressive approach?

What are the benefits and what's the best workout routine? What kind of rope should I use? How many calories are typically burned? I'm looking for an overview of rope work. Kate says: I am going to be entering a mountain bike race this spring in Sandpoint, Idaho. I have about 3 months to get fully prepared. Would you mind giving me your 2 cents on how I should go about training. Obviously, I have my own ideas, but I'd love to hear yours. The race is about 10 miles long, on pavement and mostly UPHILL!! Jesse asks: I recently lost 30lbs in 4 months in large part to your podcast, thank you. Now I have a new problem, excess skin where my gut used to be. Is there anything I can do to make this go away faster? ~ In my response I mention the Get Fit Guy episode: How To Tighten Loose Skin After Weight Loss Billy asked: I have been following a Paleo/Primal lifestyle for about 8 months. After having much digestion problems in the past, living life and training gluten free has been revolutionary. However, from time to time I do ingest gluten in the form of beer and soy sauce etc which is in some of my favourite Thai food dishes. Prior to ingesting gluten, I've been taking a Gluten Enzyme supplement by Now Foods (http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/now/glutendigest.html). I would take one (1) capsule before and one (1) during a meal containing gluten. Can you comment on this type of supplement and is it doing me any good on the harmful effects of gluten on the gut lining? Or am I wasting my money? Is there any other methods to detox from gluten ingestion? Ian wrote: I have a question. My middle toe on my right foot is numb all the time except when I run. After about 5 miles the pain becomes unbearable and I have to stop and massage my foot and move my toe around then it is good for about another mile. I saw a doctor and he gave me a cortisone shot in the bottom of my foot. This only helped a little the pain still becomes unbearable between 6 and 7 miles. I don't think it is my shoes I have three pair that I rotate. Brett wrote: I am curious to get your thoughts on a strained/pulled arch in my right foot. I am currently running in saucony kinvaras but have had this problem in the past with other shoes. The pain is localized in the middle of the arch and I have no heal pain. Is it time to explore orthotics or can strengthening and stretching my feet help alleviate the problem. Andrea wrote:I'm one of those people who doesn't wear deodorant or anti-perspirant on a daily basis because I don't really sweat throughout the day, and don't have BO (I've done check-ins with friends, this isn't just me fooling myself). I'm happy about this because I'm not a fan of trying to suppress a system designed to help us regulate body temperature. Everything changes when I exercise. I do sweat then and I've found that my sweat smells distinctly different if I'm lifting versus if I'm doing cardio. Cardio still smells "clean" to me, but I'm not too happy with how I smell when lifting. Is there any reason you can think of why my sweat would smell different at that time? If stinky sweat is related to toxins, why is it only lifting that releases them?
