Is it possible to have two strongly opposing points of view and still get along and work together? And if so, how can two sides, who are both committed to their own views, come to a conclusion? Are you more committed to politics, for example, or are you more committed to your relationships? Today Lisa talks once again with executive coach Jim Selman and psychiatrist Dr. Srini Pillay. Together they invite us to create a new mind, so we can create a new world. Jim Selman is an executive coach and talks about how leadership is a willingness to commit to a possibility before evidence is shown. Jim has worked within the corporate sector in management. He has learned to navigate opposing views and worked with both managers and those in unions. Neither party can be completely satisfied but they can work together. He talks about possibility thinking and its role in leadership. Psychiatrist Dr. Srini Pillay talks about leadership and a willingness to acknowledge possibilities, even before there's evidence. He talks about how the amygdala in the brain processes all emotions. Fear is at the forefront as we need to protect ourselves. Srini further discusses suffering and how it works in the brain. It can feel like we are being attacked, and we want people to understand it. The root of polarization is the difference between living in a state of suffering or living in a state of possibility. How is it possible to get along with others who have completely opposite views? Unless you are willing to acknowledge and respect the legitimacy of the other, then no reconciliation is possible. We automatically assume that the other person is wrong, yet no conclusion can be proven true or false. We must allow others to have judgements without reaction. It is not the truth, nor is it a falsehood. So how do we learn to live together in a way where each person can have their own opinions, yet we allow for respect of one another's views? We don't have to agree, and we can learn to create together. Most polarization gets stuck when people will not allow room for another person's view. Together they talk about consciousness, balance, and non-judgmental thinking. This leads to creative solutions. There is a way to have a conversation and not get to an agreement but still allow for the possibility of co-creation. If you can do this in a polarized environment, you actually have more power and can create a common future. This interview was part of a series originally taped in August of 2020, and we air this show in honor of Jim Selman who passed away recently. Jim was an executive coach and pioneer in the field of personal and organizational transformation. He is the author of numerous books including “Leadership” and “Living in a Real-Time World: 6 Capabilities to Prepare Us for an Unimaginable Future.” Info: jimselman.com and drsrinipillay.com.
What does it meant to create a new world? Would you like to escape limited ways of thinking and find your power? Our guests today are executive coach Jim Selman and psychiatrist Dr. Srini Pillay. Together they invite us to create a new mind, so we can create a new world. Jim Selman talks about futuristic thinking and who we have to be as we navigate a changing world. He is the founder of Executive Coaching and author of many books. Dr. Srini Pillay is a Harvard-trained psychiatrist who works within the corporate, technology, and government sectors. He is also author of several books. Jim and Srini believe this is the greatest possible time to live. Many of the ways we've been taught to live may not stand up to old beliefs. Why are the problems of the world continuing? How can we shift how we relate? We live in a world of uncertainty and there's been a long tradition of “how” to do things, especially in the self-help world. When you ask “How?” it doesn't give you ways to work in the future. We have had pandemics, wars, and a history of conflict. Jim and Srini decided to study the ways in which successful people don't follow a particular formula. We are being asked to shift our mindsets to come up with different results. Jim moved from management and consulting to executive coaching. He continuously asked why it was so possible to come up with answers, but so challenging to implement them. There is a belief that it's hard to change. This led Jim into the idea of transformation in the 1970s, when he worked with Esalen Institute. He determined that managers tried to control the result, yet in the worlds of art and sports, coaches do not try to control the performance. They don't control the behavior of others. This opened the world of coaching to him, so he learned to work with others to offer results without control. This was an alternative to management, especially in the corporate world. Srini teaches that you don't need to follow the herd. We can look inside for the answers. He talks about the definition of leadership and how it involves “becoming yourself.” A lot of people think there's a way they are “supposed” to be. This involves competence, autonomy, and social relatedness, yet in order to have a sense of purpose, we must be and become ourselves. Jim and Srini explain about their idea of “Existential Confidence” as a way for people to transform. Joining philosophy with neuroscience and psychology can help you to access yourself. Successful people are not mimicking others. They are expressing from the self. Who do we need to be to create change? They talk about confidence, commitment, and possibilities. Ordinary confidence is based on our experience. We've either done it or seen examples of it. We accept that the world is changing at an extraordinary rate. Our grounding and realities are breaking down. Common sense is not so common or reliable. We need to reinvent our relationship to what's going on. We don't have maps to get there. This is Existential Confidence. It's a confidence that rises within us, that is absolute self-trust. People may tell us it's impossible, but we know we can undertake what needs to be done. It's the kind of confidence that allows you to enjoy the journey and not constantly question. It's what you need if you are going to create or co-create the future. If it's truly going to be a future that works for most all of us, it's going to require that level of Existential Confidence. It encompasses the wholeness of who we are as human beings. It's our relationship to the future. Jim and Srini deeply discuss that is possible to pivot and create possibilities. You can change your identify from being a follower to being a creative leader. You no longer copy others. You develop your own way. We can create the reality we want to see. We can create the future. This interview was originally taped in August of 2020, and we air this show in honor of Jim Selman who passed away recently. Episode 226: Life is Hard, But I'll Be Okay - Interview Johnny Sirpilla Welcome to the LYS Podcast. Today's story is of Johnny Sirpilla, his wife Susan, their struggle with infertility, the death of their triplets, and the power of hope, coming through pain, and learning to live with gratitude. Johnny Sirpilla, founder of Encourage, LLC, and author of Life is Hard, But I'll Be OK, he is a professional speaker to businesses, communities and universities, about managing thoughts, leading yourself to productive choices and framing each challenge in your life as an opportunity for self-reflection and growth. Right up our alley. I want to start with a couple reviews of Johnny Sirpilla's book - Life is Hard but I'll Be Ok. Dr. Nido Qubein, President of High Point University, says… “He has written a book to help anyone deal head-on with any struggle they face so they can become more resilient, eventually heal, and find beauty in the hardship, the silver lining in a dark cloud.” Srini Pillay, M.D., Harvard-trained psychiatrist, said, “Johnny Sirpilla takes us on a journey through adversity and reminds us that anyone who is falling apart can put themselves together again at a higher level. With a heartwarming style of writing, he reminds us to find the blessings in our struggles and to explore our shadow selves so that we can live in a more whole and self-forgiving way. Touched by magic himself, Sirpilla will remind you that your own magic is more within your reach than you think. A profoundly touching page turner, this book is a must read.” Tune in to hear my conversation with Johnny as he shares his story and what he's learned. To contact Johnny: johnny@encourage33.com encourage33.com LinkedIn - Johnny-Sirpilla In a talk by Elder Larry S. Kacher, a Seventy in the LDS Church, called Ladder of Faith, Elder Kacher illustrates what we've seen in the Sirpilla's story. (The Sirpilla family are members of the Catholic church.) He asks the question, “How will life's challenges affect our faith in Jesus Christ? And what effect will our faith have on the joy and peace we experience in this life?” Johnny's story, and their faith, is a prime example of this - choosing faith has allowed them to find peace. Elder Kacher goes on, “Accepting God's will in place of our own is key to finding joy no matter the circumstances….our faith in him, can and will, guide us through the complexities of life. Indeed we find that there is simplicity on the other side of life's complexities as we remain steadfast in Christ, having a perfect brightness of hope.” This story Johnny has shared today, is one of resilience and the power of managing thoughts to seek gratitude when life is hard - I hope you have found a light in his experience that will shine on your own path. Remember that though life can be hard, you can be okay. Please share this episode with someone you think would benefit from hearing it. We'll see you in two weeks for the next episode of the Love Your Story podcast.

Dr. Srini Pillay is without a doubt one of the most dynamic, brilliant, multi-talented human beings I've had the good fortune to bring on the show. When I think about the life that I'm trying to build for myself, Srini is one of these icons or models that draws me forward. He's an author, a psychiatrist, a brain researcher, a virtual reality entrepreneur, a leadership expert, an accomplished composer and piano player, and an award-winning poet.Srini is also something of a provocateur. A gleeful trickster who breaks all the stereotypes you might expect around psychotherapy, leadership development, and scientific research. He's relentlessly curious and deeply attuned to the beauty of life, without losing an ounce of compassion for the tragedies of the world and how we can work together to alleviate our suffering. Our conversation ranges far and wide, touching on the nature of reality and human consciousness, the existential importance of facing our own mortality, the power of saying 'yes' to challenge and 'playing up', and the poetry of everyday life.Consider this conversation a deep invitation into the mystery, beauty, and wonder of life. If you've become at all familiar by now with the Brilliance Cycle, you'll know that true originality and contribution requires the coexistence of four very different phases of activity. 12 to 3 is the spontaneous arising of fresh creative energy out of stillness. 3 to 6 is the realization of intentions into measurable results. 6 to 9 is where we fully integrate and learn from our mistakes to develop humility. 9 to 12 is where we recognize the limitations of our humanity, and turn to something beyond ourselves. Today's podcast is useful in the 6 to 9 quadrant. In order to shift from fight or flight, sympathetic nervous system activity, into the parasympathetic activity where learning can happen, we need to be able to slow down. Sometimes pausing, going slower, produces greater results. Dr. Srini Pillay, an associate professor at Harvard University, will share with us the importance of taking frequent pauses between phases of focused activity in order to create more brilliant results. 3:11 -- Early experiments in focus and productivity 12:50 -- 5 disadvantages of focusing 22:22 -- Benefits of unfocused time 27:35 -- Strategies for balancing focused and unfocused time 48:30 -- A role-playing game

Are you feeling stuck in a stress mess, overwhelmed, and overstimulated by the demands of your life? Spread too thin and not prioritizing self-care because you feel like it's selfish when so many other people need your help? Well, let's stop for a moment. How much can we really help others when we're just scraping by, ourselves? At the end of the day, we're only really worth as much as we can give, based on the energy we have in the time that we have. I'm your host, Dr. Heidi Hanna, and in this stress mastery podcast, we're talking to the experts to find out what they do to use stress as fuel for success and what they do to shift stress in a positive way when they notice it getting out of control. Because we're all human, we all get stuck sometimes and we can learn so much from each other when we take an honest look at the patterns that are hurting us and create new patterns that will help us. So, let's get ready to master stress together in today's conversation! Key Takeaways: [1:08] Dr. Hanna welcomes listeners and introduces this week's guest, Dr. Srini Pillay, CEO of NeuroBusiness Group. He is a Harvard psychiatrist, world-renowned executive coach, brain researcher, technology entrepreneur, and musician. [2:27] Heidi explains how she met her dear friend Srini many years ago and mentions a few of her favorite books by him. [4:52] Dr. Srini talked about the nature and benefits of mixed feelings — a combination of opposite or contradictory feelings. [5:40] The conversation moves organically in an unplanned direction! [6:20] Dr. Srini touches on the importance of authenticity versus “what we're supposed to be” and what to do when there is a dissonance between our authentic self and what we think we should be or do. [7:40] We discover that a few of our preconceived notions of perseverance and practice on success levels are actually not stand-alone indicators! And these erroneous notions cause people a lot of stress. [11:20] Dr. Hanna asks what we can do to better our practices, if in fact perseverance and practice may not always help! [15:55] Unless we actually put our hearts into them, a lot of stress can be generated by our deliberate practices because we may just be rewiring negative habits. [16:50] Dr. Pillay tells the story of when he entered his residency at Harvard. [18:00] What is alignment in terms of focused and unfocused periods? [19:04] Dr. Hanna asks what are Dr. Pillay's go-to strategy or strategies when he finds himself out of balance in some way. [22:30] On the interconnectedness of consciousness and the stress generated when we feel disconnected from reality. [26:16] Dr. Hanna asks Dr. Pillay what his mantra is and wraps up the show until next week. Don't miss out on Srini's great freebies! Click here for a free, customized, Total Brain Makeover! If you enjoyed this conversation, please be sure to subscribe to the stress mastery podcast now for exclusive listener gifts and check out the show notes for links, tips, tools, and techniques. Until next time, please remember that stressing is a blessing, once you know how to use it for good. It gives us the energy and information to fuel positive change if we're brave enough to look into it, stay open and curious to what it has to teach us and then adjust our patterns in a way that will give us even more capacity to cope. And when we do that together, we increase the energy we have to bring to the time that we have and we're better together. So please, be good to yourself, and I'll see you next week. Welcome to Minisode Monday, where we kick off the week with something quick and actionable -- to make you more magnetic and effective -- that you can implement right away. This time around, Tinker Dabble Doodle Try: Unlock the Power of the Unfocused Mind author Dr. Srini Pillay rejoins us to talk about a process known as psychological halloweenism -- the act of taking on an alternative mindset as a way of unlocking creative potential. If you like this Minisode Monday, make sure to check out our full episode with Dr. Pillay here! Let's get to it! The Cheat Sheet: You don't have to be a little kid to benefit from the rewards of playing make-believe. We all tend to think of ourselves in one way -- we're good at some things and less adept at others. What happens when we mentally pretend to see the world from the perspective of someone else? Someone who, for instance, we imagine to be more creative than us? This is called psychological halloweenism, and it can be a powerful way to solve problems and cope with situations we feel ill-prepared (as ourselves) to deal with. "If you think like somebody else," says Dr. Pillay, "you will get yourself out of your own mental traps, your own habits, and you will begin to think from somebody else's perspective." Practice psychological halloweenism at the dinner table, at innovation meetings at work, or with your friends. You'll be surprised at what you can discover about your own mind's capabilities when you try to think like somebody else. Welcome to Minisode Monday, where we kick off the week with something quick and actionable -- to make you more magnetic and effective -- that you can implement right away. When something goes wrong in our lives, sometimes we fixate on its emotional impact -- how it makes us feel in the moment -- rather than what difference it will make in the long run (which may be minimal). Tinker Dabble Doodle Try: Unlock the Power of the Unfocused Mind author Dr. Srini Pillay shows us how to control this emotional feedback with the CIRCA mnemonic. Make sure to check out his entire episode: The Power of the Unfocused Mind, and his other Minisode Monday: Dabbling: Not Just for Dilettantes! The Cheat Sheet: When something goes wrong in your life, ask yourself: is this important, or just traumatic? We can gauge this by using the CIRCA mnemonic. C: Chunking. Break down the problem into its component parts; solve it over a period of time. I: Ignore mental chatter. Observe your thoughts; don't become your thoughts. R: Reality check. Remind yourself that "this too shall pass." C: Control check. Is the problem something you actually have a hand in, or is it something like weather or politics? A: Attention shift. Move your attention from the problem (the past) to the solution (the future). Welcome to Minisode Monday, where we kick off the week with something quick and actionable -- to make you more magnetic and effective -- that you can implement right away. Tinker Dabble Doodle Try: Unlock the Power of the Unfocused Mind author Dr. Srini Pillay rejoins us to talk about how we can benefit from the seemingly meandering path of dabbling to unlock creativity and make useful connections between disparate interests. Let's get to it! The Cheat Sheet: If you're only looking forward and focusing on a task you've set out to tackle, your brain is only using a small portion of its resources. To access the rest, understand the power of dabbling. We need regular distractions from our primary course of action -- like hobbies. If you engage in a hobby for one hour a day, you can prolong life and protect your brain from dementia. Hobbies also trigger the brain's unfocused mode, which activates your creative circuits and helps you make connections you might otherwise miss. It was by this dabbling that Steve Jobs applied what he learned in calligraphy class to create fonts for Apple. This week, make sure to listen to Dr. Srini Pillay's full episode on harnessing the power of your unfocused mind and give some thought to how it can help you connect your own disparate interests. We're about to teach you how to upgrade your brain, health, and performance by having more fun.
Dr. Srini Pillay, author of Tinker Dabble Doodle Try, stops by to discuss how to get more done by giving your brain a break. Topics include: * When daydreaming is actually a good thing and how too much focus can hurt more than it helps. * Debunking the right brain/left brain myth and why everyone can be creative if they want to be. Plus, why so many people get their best ideas in the shower. * Why it's so hard to make changes in your life and how to convince your brain to make it a little bit easier. * How to use self talk: exactly what to say (and what not to say) to get the results you want. * Why we should start paying more attention to the exception instead of the rule.
