Steve Carver: Here's the thing about stress, I think it's really important that you have other tools at your disposal to help you de-stress yourself. Whenever a stress happens in your life…there's about a 90 second chemical reaction that happens in your brain. So it's okay to be angry, it's okay to be sad, it's okay to be upset, scared, whatever caused the stress in the first place. That chemical reaction lasts about 90 seconds. Anything longer than that is you staying on the hamster wheel and continuing to perpetuate those feelings. So how do I stop that? So some people say, well, I can't get off the hamster wheel. So I need to distract my mind. For me, I'll do 10 deep breaths. And the first five, I'm like, doesn't seem to be doing anything, right? And then I get deeper and I exhale more and by number 10, I'm thinking only about breathing. And then I realized that I'm not as at DEFCON 5 anymore. I'm still trying to deal with whatever it was that caused me to be stressed, but now I have a clearer mind to come up with a solution that's going to be beneficial to solve the problem or if it's something that I just can't control and there's nothing I can do about it at this moment, me being worked up about it is not helping the problem. So find a way that works for you to distract your mind from the thing that caused you to be stressed in the moment. I know that there are some monumental things that happen in life and in the moment it's very upsetting. But I always take a moment and think, okay, what can I do about it right here, right now in this moment? And too many of us regress to some other trauma in our life where we were a child and we didn't really have good coping skills; so we have a very childlike reaction to that stress. Whereas if we can understand that that's what we're doing and we're no longer there, then we can replace those reactions or those coping mechanisms with something that's more beneficial to you — and again, this takes a little bit of work and it doesn't happen overnight. One of the coping mechanisms I have is a JumpSport trampoline. When I'm at work and something frustrates me or maybe I didn't get good sleep, I go down the trampoline and I run as fast as I can or I put on my headphones and I listen to really loud music and I bounce for about three to five minutes and sure enough, all of a sudden I'm not that stressed anymore and I'm not that upset anymore. Now, the problem didn't go away, I just stopped making it worse than it was, like pouring gasoline on a fire. And I think that is helpful for people — if they can find something for them, and certainly the trampoline is a vehicle and is a fun thing, that distracts you, it lets you get all that energy out. Stephanie: I've heard that there are mental health benefits to rebounding. Is that something that you can talk about? Steve Carver: Sure, let's talk about the health benefits. So I primarily got into this because of the physical aspect of it. So you go from zero gravity when you're at the top of the stroke, where you barely even just barely leave the surface — you don't even have to jump high on it — and then you push down into the trampoline surface and can create exponential gravity. The beauty of that is, on a health level, is that your lymphatic system does not have a pump, so to move lymph through your body, you need two things do that, gravity and movement…doing the fitness trampoline from JumpSport will give you up to five G's of force, so as you compress yourself down to five G's and release to zero gravity, it creates a natural pumping action…10 minutes of exercise will actually move the lymph through your system and detoxify your body while you're working out. So what does that do? What does that mean, really? Well, if I remove all the toxins out of my body very efficiently and I help my body do that, that helps everything else be more efficient. So now my immune system is stronger because it's not bogged down by toxins. My heart, my lungs, anything that has fluid is going to be assisted by that pumping action as well. So you're going to get benefits to your endocrine system and all of all of the other ones that I mentioned. Not to mention that you're going to actually help your heart in this process so it doesn't have to work nearly as hard. So there's just a small list of just the physical health benefits. We have our product in the UCLA Medical Center…they've realized that it produces a lot of your happy hormones. So oxytocin, serotonin, endorphins all get released into your brain while you're bouncing on the trampoline. So as a result of that, you smile and you're happy. So I always tell people, three minutes on the JumpSport is like a cup of coffee. So if you're feeling a little down, your energy is a little low, you get on the trampoline, you bounce on it for three minutes. All of a sudden you're like, I'm wide awake and I have lots of energy and I'm happy again. Jesse Starcher, Mark Radulich and Ronnie Adams discuss the life and career of Carrie Fisher. They discuss the troubles of being a child born into celebrity, Carrie's work with mental illness awareness, and the impact her character from Star Wars, Princess Leia, had on female roles.Carrie Frances Fisher (October 21, 1956 – December 27, 2016) was an American actress and writer. She was best known for playing Princess Leia in the original Star Wars films (1977–1983). She reprised the role in Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015), The Last Jedi (2017) — a posthumous release that was dedicated to her — and appeared in The Rise of Skywalker (2019), through the use of unreleased footage from The Force Awakens. After finishing the European leg of her book tour (her last TV appearance was on an episode of 8 Out of 10 Cats in the UK, broadcast December 21, 2016), Fisher was on a commercial flight on December 23, 2016, from London to Los Angeles when she had a medical emergency around fifteen minutes before the aircraft landed.[130][a] A passenger seated near Fisher reported that she had stopped breathing; another passenger performed CPR on Fisher until paramedics arrived at the scene. Emergency services in Los Angeles were contacted when the flight crew reported a passenger unresponsive prior to landing. Fisher was taken by ambulance to the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, where she was placed on a ventilator. On the morning of December 27, 2016, after being in intensive care for four days, Fisher died at the age of 60 at the UCLA Medical Center. Fisher's daughter, Billie Lourd, confirmed her mother's death in a statement to the press. Many of her co-stars and directors from Star Wars and other works also shared their thoughts on her death.Original Airdate 12/30/2016Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsosnapchat: markkind76FB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulich

Dr. Patak has worked in the healthcare industry for over 30 years and is currently a Pediatric Anesthesiologist at University of Washington Medical Center and Seattle Children's Hospital. He spent his early years working as a nursing assistant at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and UCLA Medical Center, which is where he researched communication problems with mechanically ventilated patients and helped bring to market the Vidatak EZ Board, an evidence-based communication tool for intubated and non-verbal patients. He then went on to become a nurse where he spent another 8 years working at UCLA Medical Center while completing his medical degree at The David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. Concurrent to his medical degree, he also earned a Master's in Business Administration at the Marshall School of Business at USC. When the EZ Boards began being used as a point-of-care translation tool for patients who could speak, but had limited English proficiency, he combined his understanding of this need and developed VidaTalk. This effort was funded by the NIH with a 5-year longitudinal research study conducted at the Ohio State University School of Nursing ensuring VidaTalk would be an effective solution for critically ill patients. The EZ Board and VidaTalk are now used globally, driving equitable care for patients with speech and language barriers across the world.Link to claim CME credit: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/3DXCFW3CME credit is available for up to 3 years after the stated release dateContact CEOD@bmhcc.org if you have any questions about claiming credit.

Welcome to this episode of Physician's Weekly Podcast. My name is Dr. Rachel Giles, from Medicom Medical Publishers, in collaboration with Physician's Weekly. This episode has 2 inDEPTH interviews with top-line specialists who just published studies we think are interesting to our physician colleagues. Both interviews were conducted by Physician's Weekly's own Senior Editor Martta Kelly. Later in this episode, she interviews Dr. Lihi Eder, from the Women's College Research Institute and University of Toronto, in Canada about biomarkers of cardiovascular disease in patients with psoriatic disease, which her research group just published in Arthritis & Rheumatology. The researchers wondered if 2 biomarkers may reflect atherosclerosis burden independent of traditional cardiovascular risk factors in over 1000 patients with psoriatic disease with a mean follow-up of over 7 years. The first clinical CV event was the study's primary endpoint. Keep listening to find out the results. But first, Physician's Weekly speaks with Dr. Heather Schickedanz. Dr. Schickedanz is a geriatrician affiliated with multiple hospitals, including UCLA Medical Center, in Los Angeles. When researchers first discovered a link in the late 1990s between childhood adversity and chronic health problems later in life, the real revelation was how common those experiences were across all socioeconomic groups.Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are universal, yet highlights some disparities among socioeconomic groups. People with low-income and educational attainment, people of color, and people who identified as gay, lesbian or bisexual had a significantly higher chance of having experienced adversity in childhood. It is estimated that three out of five adults across the U.S. had at least one adverse experience in their childhood, such as divorce, a parent's death, physical or emotional abuse, or a family member's incarceration or substance abuse problem. A quarter of adults have at least three such experiences in childhood, which – according to other research — increases their risk for most common chronic diseases, from heart disease and cancer to depression and substance abuse. Here we talk to Dr. Schickendanz about her recently published research on the association between Adverse Childhood Experiences and Dementia in American Older Adults.Enjoy listening! Pregnancy can be an exciting time for most people, but what does it look like if you are a kidney patient? What does pregnancy look like if they have kidney disease, are on dialysis, or have received a transplant? In this episode, we'll hear useful facts and tips from transplant nephrologist Dr. Mariana Markell, as well as personal stories from Cari Maxwell and Katie Reed, two mothers living with kidney disease. In this episode, you'll hear from: Dr. Mariana Markell Dr. Markell is a graduate of Yale University and New York Medical College and received her Residency and Fellowship training at Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital and UCLA Medical Center. At SUNY Downstate she has served as the Director of Inpatient Dialysis and created the first Transplant Nephrology Fellowship Program in New York City. She currently continues to care for general and transplant nephrology patients while serving at the Medical Director of Kidney Transplantation. Her research interests include the impact of social determinants of health and issues in women's health in the person with kidney disease. Katie Reed Katie Reed has autosomal dominant tubulointerstitial MUC1 kidney disease (ADTKD-MUC1) and is a recent recipient of a successful kidney transplant. Katie is a board member for the Rare Kidney Disease Foundation, which focuses on raising awareness of ADTKD, building up the ADTKD community, and advocating for patients and families. Katie and her husband reside in North Carolina and are parents to two young children. In their free time, you can find the Reeds out and about at local parks, watching a thrilling game of preschool-aged soccer, cheering for the Steelers, or taking over Disney World in matching family shirts. Professionally, Katie is a Managing Director with Afton Partners, a consultancy focused on funding policy, governance, and sustainability strategies for education and human services organizations. Cari Maxwell Cari was diagnosed with Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) in 1989. Through healthy living and choices, she managed her disease on her own for many years following the example of her father, who experienced ESRD in the early 1980s. A registered organ donor provided a near-perfect matching kidney to him and that gift of life granted Cari and her family 31 additional years with him before he passed away in October of 2018. Advancements in treatment for PKD patients are very close to Cari's heart, not only for herself but also for her other two siblings and oldest child that are diagnosed with ADPKD and for the likelihood that her two younger children may also be one day. She was fortunate to be able to participate in the clinical trial for the first-ever FDA-approved treatment for PKD – a treatment she still benefits from today. Cari is a member of the National Kidney Foundation's Kidney Advocacy Committee, and she champions patient education, early detection, and scientific advancement through patient-oriented clinical research. She hopes that through her commitment to the awareness of chronic kidney diseases, others will take an active role in their health journey through early detection, healthy choices, and becoming a strong voice of advocacy for themselves and others. Cari is a wife and mother to three daughters and works full-time as the Director of Culture & Operations for a growing technology integration firm near Hershey, PA. https://www.linkedin.com/in/leetomlinson/ (Lee Tomlinson) had a life many would have considered charmed. A successful world-trotting tennis pro, international businessman, marketing genius behind the American Film Institute's 10-year long 100 Greatest Movies CBS TV specials and multi-million-dollar fundraising campaign, major Hollywood film studio owner, loving husband, and near scratch golfer. Until the world crashed down, and he was subsequently diagnosed with Stage III+ throat cancer, and subjected to months of life-threatening, debilitating chemo and radiation, and extreme pain--so extreme he could not eat or even swallow. Towards the end of his grueling treatment, while hospitalized for a severe infection, a never-ending stream of insensitive, unkind acts totally lacking in compassion by the hospital staff, sent Lee into an abyss of emotional despair that made him choose suicide over life. Fortunately, another doctor, a dear friend, stopped him by deeply apologizing on behalf of a healthcare system that had failed to provide him-and so many others, with even a hint of compassion. And with one simple suggestion--inspired Lee to use his gifts as a speaker, customer service expert and leader to restore compassion to healthcare--not only for patients, but also for all the overworked, under-supported, burned-out healthcare professionals who've literally lost the ability to provide the compassion that got them into medicine in the first place. Lee's powerful crusade is documented in his new book https://www.amazon.com/Compassion-Heals-Healthcare-Lee-Tomlinson-ebook/dp/B091Y4W471 (Compassion Heals: From Self-Care to Healthcare). But there is a message here for more than healthcare professionals (HCPs). There's a message for all of us about the power of compassion to heal others' mental, emotional and physical pain - but to also love and heal ourselves - and in doing so, help heal the world at a critical time in our history. Lee's book presents the evidence that compassion heals by sighting numerous scientific studies, books and resources. But the most telling statistic he cites is that more than 50% of Americans believe that healthcare and healthcare professionals totally lack compassion. Data shows that people die because of compassionless care, not just from medical errors. Compassionless healthcare has become more the norm over the past 25 years. Left unchecked, the future of healthcare is unthinkable. And that's why Lee is driven to make a difference. He has taken to the stage as "Patient Lee" dressed in nothing but a hospital gown, and presented his mixture of humor, compassion, urgency, encouragement and call-to-action at more than 200 venues, including keynote presentations to Johns Hopkins Medicine, Memorial Sloan Kettering, UCLA Medical Center, Eli Lilly & Co., Providence Health & Services, David Geffen School of Medicine, Bristol Myers Squibb, Siemens Medical Imaging, City of Hope Cancer Center, Adventist Health, and national conferences for the Oncology Nurse Society (ONS), Academy of Oncology Nurses and Patient Navigators (AONN), Association of Integrated Health and Medicine (AIHM) and Hematology/Oncology Pharmacy Association (HOPA). The problem, as Lee discovered when speaking with members of his audiences, is that HCPs are totally spent themselves, bereft of energy and emotional sustenance. More than 60 percent of them are suffering from burnout and, as such have zero compassion to give anyone because they're not given themselves enough to stay healthy and able to do so. So much of Compassion Heals is a recipe for self-care. Ways that healthcare workers can step off the treadmill and restore themselves, so they can freely give from a well of wellbeing and compassion within. Far from being punitive, Compassion Heals is in itself a healing balm. Filled with understanding and kindness for those who are falling short, along with those who are in their hands, this book

Ronnie Fass MD is a Professor of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University. He is the Director of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, and Heads the Esophageal and Swallowing Center at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland. Dr. Fass earned his medical degree from Ben-Gurion University Faculty of Medicine in Israel. He then moved to the United States and pursued a residency in Internal medicine at the University of Arizona Medical Center before completing his fellowship in Gastroenterology from UCLA Medical Center. Dr. Fass serves as the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology and The Journal of Neurogastroenterology and Motility. Dr. Fass has published more than 550 articles, editorials, commentaries, and abstracts in reputed journals. He is the recipient of various awards and honors including the American Gastroenterological Association/Janssen Award for Digestive Sciences in Clinical or Basic Research. When did you decide to study medicine? What about a specialty? These are big decisions which are likely to affect the rest of your life. How do you make the right decision? Today, Dr. Ronnie Fass shares the secret to his approach on making these decisions. He tells us that he made sure to lay the groundwork, he did his research, but most importantly he talked to people who had already taken the journey he was considering, and his mentors. So how did it turn out? Dr. Fass asserts, “Even now, 30, 40 years down the line, I still feel this was the proper path for me.” Pearls of Wisdom: 1. When you need to make an important decision, lay the groundwork: talk to people who know you and understand the subject that you're making a decision about, and consult with expert mentors. 2. When you reach out to mentors, show enthusiasm and seriousness. It's not just that a mentor feeds you and you eat. You have to have the ingredients and listen to them about how to prepare an amazing meal. 3. Listen to patients and give them time. Read their charts beforehand so that you have a background. Never skip the physical examination, which is critical to your role as a healer. Follow up in a timely manner and keep communication open.
