The Menopause Movement Podcast

Cancer is difficult to diagnose. We talk about self-breast exam, and how it's a part of our monthly health care, but one thing that we don't notice necessarily is what's happening in our bellies. It can be because you may not have pain, and you may just think that there's a slight bulge on the top of your belly. As women, sometimes we get to a point where we just numb out the pain that we experience in our bodies (example: menstrual pain). But what if we start to pay attention to our body and what we eat? Because what if the way we've been eating actually promotes disease like cancer? I talk more about that in today's episode with registered dietician and low carb advocate, Martha Tettenborn. Tune in to this podcast to find strength, wisdom and more love for your body and life than ever before! Discussion Points:  [0:00] Introduction  [6:41] What Martha learned in her nutritional training   [8:01] Brief history of Governmental Food Policy   [10:41] How Martha became a renegade low carb dietician  [15:22] Ancestral eating and our current food supply  [17:32] The Inca Trail and how Martha's life has changed after doing it  [23:27] Being diagnosed with cancer   [29:53] Start to pay attention to your body  [32:48] Defining cachexia  [34:32] How to start eating now to support our metabolism  [39:15] Things Martha did to manage the setbacks she experienced in her life  [41:47] Choosing how to deal with the obstacles presented to us  [43:53] Cancer has a disordered metabolism and it can be affected by what you eat  [44:45] How Martha started her blog and wrote a book  [47:43] Martha shares these powerful insights to listeners About the Guest: Martha Tettenborn is a Registered Dietitian for 32 years, and she just recently added to that knowledge base by completing the Primal Health Coach Certification, an in-depth course that explores all the facets of a lifestyle based on Ancestral Health principles. After decades of amazingly good health and smooth sailing, Martha's life was suddenly sidelined in the summer of 2018 by the presence of a large, fast-growing cyst in my abdomen. Despite no-one expecting it, it turned out to be cancerous – a Stage 1C2 high grade serous ovarian tumour.  This led her to do a deep dive into the research around cancer and nutrition where she discovered the metabolic nature of cancer and how the damaged metabolism of cancer cells can be used to weaken them. She then shares how our nutritional choices have an awesome power to influence the course of cancer treatment.   Resources: Check my latest podcast or listen to the previous ones https://www.menopausemovement.com/blog   Connect with me on Instagram @drmichellegordon Follow me on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/drmichellegordon Join The Menopause Movement private group on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/groups/menopausemovement) Sign up for our Virtual Live Retreat: https://www.menopausemovement.com/retreat     Sign up for the 28-Day MENO-Belly Challenge here https://www.menopausemovement.com/challenge Visit Martha Tettenborn's website https://www.marthatettenborn.com/  Books mentioned in this episode: The Obstacle Is the Way: The Timeless Art of Turning Trials into Triumph https://amzn.to/2VJgN0R   Hacking Chemo: Using Ketogenic Diet, Therapeutic Fasting and a Kickass Attitude to Power through Cancer Treatment https://amzn.to/3CI0z9b  For more podcast episodes, you may also visit my website. In this episode, we’re delighted to be interviewing the phenomenal Martha Beck. For those of you who do not know Dr. Martha Beck, she is a New York Times bestselling author, a speaker, and a life coach, with an infectious humor. She holds three Harvard degrees in social science, and Oprah Winfrey once called her the smartest woman she knows.Martha is passionate and engaging, and she is well known for her unique combination of science, humor, and spirituality.Having a son with Downs syndrome caused Martha to really consider what human life was about and set her off on “a lifetime adventure of breaking the rules”.To quote Martha Beck “Emmerson said Beauty is its own excuse for being, and I decided that joy is the felt equivalent and the only real reason to be here”.In her new book, “The Way of Integrity: Finding the Path to Your True Self,” Martha explains why integrity, or being in harmony with ourselves is the key to a meaningful and joyful life, which is what we discuss in today’s episode.Martha perfectly helped us understand integrity beyond a virtue to strive for: “the word Integrity comes from the Latin integer, which means whole or intact, undivided”. We need integrity to function as a whole being. In the same way that an airplane needs to be in structural integrity to fly, we need to be true to ourselves in all situations and with all people to be wholly intact, to be in integrity.Possibly our favorite part is when Martha life coaches Jeni on navigating climate change activism, so make sure to listen out for that!We also talk about how social pressure can be a benevolent problem for entrepreneurs – “it’s forcing us to find ourselves”. We delve into what we can learn about mentorship from the hero’s saga, and how committing to your integrity can be a force for social change. Finally, the vital importance of self-care, which Martha sees as radical action. This is a remarkable interview with a world-renowned sociologist about what you need to do to find your integrity and, with it, a sense of purpose, emotional healing, and a life free of mental suffering, so make sure not to miss this episode! Here’s a peek at what else we discuss: An introduction to Martha Beck, from her formal education to her pursuit of joy. Learn about integrity, which Martha describes as a feeling of being whole or intact. Hear what Martha has to say about overcoming self-doubt, finding your truth, and then walking your talk. The idea of being at odds with culture for the sake of individuality rather than conformity. The different social pressures that men and women experience and how they affect us. Find out how entrepreneurs are affected by conflicting value systems and social pressure. What the hero’s saga has to teach us about change and receiving a mentor. How Martha found her way through conflict when she was pregnant with her son, Adam. Whether or not integrity coincides with happiness; turning suffering into joy. How going into your integrity relates to social activism; activating positive, not righteous anger. Martha emphasizes the idea that self-care in and of itself is radical action. Why self-help should not be about ‘fixing’ yourself but rather about letting the mess that culture has made of your mind fall away. And she has noticed that “people who just go with their fascination end up creating things that sell well.” According to Martha, “When you are doing something you love in a place you love with the people you love in a way you love, love sells better than hate. So do whatever pulls on you, do it. See what happens.”Know Your NumbersIn our business, we're big fans of financial literacy and accountability. On today's episode of #mensexpleasure, I chat with Dr. Martha Tara Lee. Surrounded by friends who were sexually inhibited and struck by dire lack of positive conversations around sex and sexuality in Singapore, Dr. Martha Tara Lee set out to make a positive difference in embarking on her doctorate in human sexuality before launching Eros Coaching in 2009. Today, she remains dedicated to working with individuals and couples who wish to lead self-actualised and pleasure-filled lives. She also holds certificates in counselling, coaching and sex therapy, and her fourth degree – a Masters in Counselling in May 2018. In practice for more than nine years, she is the only certified sexuality educator and certified sexuality educator supervisor by the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists (AASECT) in Singapore. Often cited in the media, Dr. Lee is the appointed Resident Sexologist for PinkLifestyle.com; as well appointed sex expert for Men's Health Singapore, and Men's Health Malaysia. She was recognised as one of ‘Top 50 Inspiring Women Under 40′ by Her World in July 2010, and one of ‘Top 100 Inspiring Women' by CozyCot in March 2011. She has published four books: Love, Sex and Everything In-Between, Orgasmic Yoga, From Princess to Queen and {Un}Inhibited. Martha works with individuals and couples in private coaching sessions, and conducts her own workshops. She takes prides in making sure all her workshops are also fun, educational, and sex-positive. This comes easily to her because even though she is extremely dedicated and serious about her work, she fundamentally believes that sex is meant to be fun, wonderful, amazing and sacred. As such, this serious light-heartedness has shone through again and again. Today I'm introducing you to Martha, a long-time friend of mine. Even after 10 years of lots of financial advice, she still saw reason to reach out and get more. Even after ten years of friendship and countless financial conversations, she decided to dedicate 30 days of her life in my one month intensive to start changing her relationship with money. Martha is married with two small kids and she tells us about how she and her husband, Matt manage their finances separately. Even though she's in a partnership she decided to engage with me solo in the one month intensive. Martha was blown away with the transformation she made going from stressed about money (and unsure of where she and her husband stood financially) to at ease and able to communicate about financial matters as a couple. In our conversation, we talk about the money woes she's faced and how the one-month intensive prepared her to navigate her finances during the pandemic. You'll hear the aha-moment when she learned how to allocate every single dollar using her spending plan. She also talks about teaching her children about spending, saving and giving their money. We dive into her plans for navigating a holiday budget (and preparing for that early!), what she considers when deciding whether or not to splurge on an item and the cycles she went through of saving and spending before participating in the intensive. Here are just a few things you'll learn when you listen in: How Martha went from “handling” her finances to having more than $5,000 in her savings in less than six months How Martha and her husband went from ONLY talking about finances when there was a problem to making weekly financial decisions together Martha's realization that money is not always a negative subject and how she brings it up with friends and family. How participating in the one-month intensive prepared her for the unexpected expenses that came with the pandemic. Martha's aha-moment of learning how to allocate her money by using her spending plan and how she's learned to align her spending with her values. How Martha is now teaching her children about spending, saving and giving with their own finances. Why she's been working toward investing in yoga teacher training and how she's been preparing for it financially. This episode is for my entire audience but it's especially for you if you're married and wondered how I support women who want to work with me alone. But it is also for you if you feel like you make too much money to be stressed about finances. Tune in and hear Martha share her behind the scenes experience and the growth she's seen since we've worked together.
