The reciprocal relationship between mindfulness and creativity is fascinating. Sometimes when we're our most tapped in and mindful, we invite in powerful waves of creativity. Other times, when we're out of sync, creative endeavors can be a vehicle for exploration and expression that helps us ease back into more mindful rhythms.   In today's episode I talk with Katy Oberle, a licensed psychotherapist turned Creative Mindfulness Coach and singer/songwriter. Katy is passionate about expanding the definition of mindfulness to include creative, nature-based and embodied practices. She coaches clients to develop their own "brand" of mindfulness that honors their innate creativity, life circumstances, values and goals. Katy believes that when our wise creative spirits come out to play, healing and transformation can happen at all levels.   Katy shares with us what it means to practice mindfulness and some of the benefits that come with it. Additionally, Katy talks about being mindfully creative vs. creative mindfulness, provides advice on how to tap into compassion for ourselves and different ways to be creative.   Katy and I would love to hear your take on creative mindfulness and how you implement it. The 2026 World Cup has finished and the final two teams, Spain and Argentina, have stirred up old notions of what we call soft power. Sports play a large role in how countries display their soft power, but it can often be confused for cooperation. Indeed all power is contested and soft power is no exception, and the contest is clear when two national teams meet in a sports contest. Examples of soft power interactions in sports include the US beating the USSR in hockey in the 1980 Winter Games or the Soviets defeating the US in basketball at the 1972 Olympics during the height of the Cold War. No sport, however, garners more international interest than soccer (or what the rest of the world calls football). Our guests have written a new book that defines the Cold War rivalry through the lens of ten historic soccer matches. The book is called Cold War Football: A history in Ten matches. In this episode of The Birth Lounge Podcast, HeHe continues her series on one of the most requested and emotionally charged topics in parenting: vaccines. She's joined by pediatrician and The Vaccine Book author, Dr. Bob Sears, for a thoughtful conversation about vaccine schedules, informed consent, and why so many parents feel caught between asking questions and feeling heard. Together, they explore how vaccine recommendations have evolved over time, what influences the current childhood vaccine schedule, and why trust between families and the medical system has become increasingly strained. Throughout the conversation, Dr. Sears shares his perspective on topics including timing of vaccination, measles and the MMR vaccine, herd immunity, newborn protection strategies, breastfeeding antibodies, and questions many parents have about vaccine ingredients, package inserts, MTHFR, and vaccine safety research. He also discusses why some families seek individualized approaches to vaccination and what he believes parents should consider when making decisions with their healthcare provider. As with every episode in this series, this conversation is not intended to tell you what decisions to make for your family. Instead, HeHe's goal is to create space for respectful discussion, equip parents with information, and encourage thoughtful conversations with trusted healthcare providers so you can make informed decisions that align with your family's values. Whether you're firmly decided, still gathering information, or simply curious about the questions many parents are asking, this episode invites you into a conversation centered on nuance, critical thinking, and respectful dialogue. 00:00 Vaccine Indoctrination Claim 01:08 Advocacy Scripts for Birth 04:22 Vaccine Series and Guest Intro 11:42 Why Trust Broke Down 39:24 Vaccines and Immune System Theory 49:35 Why MMR Hits Hard 52:18 Measles Risk and Nutrition 56:42 Vaccine Side Effects Data Gap 01:01:13 Herd Immunity Myth 01:04:31 Newborn Cocooning and Shedding 01:11:35 Pregnancy Vaccine Repeat Doses 01:14:43 MTHFR and Vaccine Decisions 01:20:18 Will Diseases Return 01:23:43 Finding Like Minded Care 01:26:35 Resources and Farewell Guest Bio: Dr. Bob Sears is a pediatrician, vaccine educator, and author of The Vaccine Book. EPISODE 736 - Shymara Medina - Proud Puerto Rican children's book author, is passionate about storytelling that uplifts and inspires young mindsIn this episode, Shymara Medina shares the story behind her journey as a proud Puerto Rican children's book author and the inspiration that shapes her storytelling. She talks about how her life in Georgia, her family, and her everyday experiences became the foundation for books that encourage, educate, and uplift young readers. Show notes often work best when they offer a short, engaging summary that gives listeners a clear sense of the episode's focus and value.A major thread in the conversation is her family's beekeeping life and how that world sparked the idea for Zeke becomes a beekeeper. Shymara explains what she has learned through beekeeper associations, monthly meetings, and hands-on care for their hives, while also showing how bees became more than a topic and turned into a meaningful teaching tool for children. She connects bee safety, responsibility, nature, honey, and the role bees play in a family business to lessons young readers can understand and remember. She also reflects on writing Zeke's quest for courage, a story built around her son's struggles with spelling and the encouragement her family wanted to give him. The book blends story, spelling practice, and comprehension in a way that makes learning feel fun and personal. Shymara shares how seeing children respond to the book, especially during school visits, confirmed for her that stories can help kids feel capable and supported. The episode also explores the realities of self-publishing, finding the right illustrator, protecting creative ownership, and using real life as inspiration for children's books. Shymara offers insight into writing with intention, choosing collaborators carefully, and staying open to growth as an author. She closes with plans for a bilingual book and a young adult project, showing that her creativity is still expanding.Key takeaway: Shymara's work is rooted in the belief that children need stories that reflect real life, build confidence, and remind them that their voices matter.https://www.instagram.com/shymara_medina/Support the show___https://livingthenextchapter.com/podcast produced by: https://truemediasolutions.ca/Coffee Refills are always appreciated, refill Dave's cup here, and thanks!https://buymeacoffee.com/truemediaca

Grab HeHe's free Low-Tox Baby Registry Guide for the exact products she chose for baby Saggy, plus the reasoning behind every recommendation: thebirthlounge.com/registry In this episode of The Birth Lounge Podcast, HeHe sits down with certified dog trainer, children's book author, and founder of Dog Meets Baby, Dominika Knossalla-Pado, for a conversation every dog parent needs to hear before bringing home a baby. We all love the idea of our dog instantly becoming our baby's best friend. But the reality? Safe, successful relationships between dogs and babies don't happen by accident. They happen through preparation, boundaries, and understanding what our dogs are actually communicating. Dominika shares the personal experience that inspired her work after her own beloved Labrador displayed concerning behavior around her newborn twins. That experience revealed a major gap in education for growing families and sparked her mission to help parents safely navigate life with both dogs and children. Together, HeHe and Dominika break down the biggest mistakes families make before baby arrives, the common myths that can create unnecessary risk, and the practical skills every dog should have before postpartum begins. They discuss how to prepare your dog for major household changes, why separation tolerance matters, and how simple routines can make the transition smoother for everyone involved. You'll also learn how to recognize subtle signs of stress in dogs, including behaviors that are often misunderstood or overlooked, safer ways to introduce your baby and dog, and why supervision and management are far more important than simply trusting that your dog will "figure it out." This conversation isn't about fear, blame, or assuming the worst about your dog. It's about setting your family up for success, protecting your baby, reducing stress for your dog, and creating an environment where both can thrive. Whether you're expecting your first baby, currently pregnant, or already navigating life with little ones and furry family members, this episode is packed with practical, judgment-free strategies to help your home feel safer, calmer, and more prepared for this huge life transition. 00:00 Labrador Hunting Scare 01:27 Meet Dog Meets Baby 08:30 How Predation Looked 15:10 Breeds and Temperament 20:07 Pregnancy Prep Essentials 39:34 Low Tox Registry Picks 43:34 Bed Training Basics 50:35 Safe Boundaries Rules 56:03 Stress Signs And Introductions 01:04:54 Labor Myths And Wrap Up   Guest Bio: Dominika is a Certified Dog Trainer, Children's Book Author, and the founder of Dog Meets Baby. Her brand new book, The Mindful Mom: 365 Peaceful Reflections and Daily Gratitude for Moms, released March 10th, and despite the title, this is not a parenting book. It's a mindfulness book for women who happen to be moms, written to help them reclaim their identity, their joy, and their sense of self. After battling Lyme disease, losing her father, and navigating the demands of raising three kids, Meg rebuilt her life from the inside out. She now leads retreats, works with women one-on-one, and has channeled a decade of her own journey — and her clients' breakthroughs — into 365 daily reflections. In this episode, we get into the real conversation behind the book: why women struggle to prioritize themselves, how conditioned guilt keeps us stuck, and what it actually looks like to live with more intention and less pressure. In this episode, we cover:What the healing hamster wheel is and how to get off itWhy "what do I need?" is the hardest question for most women to answerConditioned guilt vs. real guilt — and how to tell them apartBeing multi-passionate in a linear world and why it's a strengthHow Meg went from Lyme disease and grief to writing a book and launching a screenwriting career at NYUWhy this book is for the woman, not the mom — only 10 of 365 prompts mention childrenThe stories we unconsciously plant in our kids ("I'm going to miss you so much") and what they actually signalWorthiness tied to productivity — recognizing the pattern and starting to untangle itWhy slow mornings and daily movement are Meg's only two non-negotiablesWhy women need more sleep than men — and why most wellness advice is built for male bodiesStarting something new at 40, silencing the inner critic, and just showing up anywayMeg's airport story about her son that reframes what it means to be creativeHer Greece Girls Trip — September 12–19, only 5 spots remainingThis episode is a heartfelt conversation about the journey of self-discovery, the importance of mindfulness and the power of embracing one's multi-passionate nature. While she admits it sounds a bit silly, Dodd admits to feeling slightly guilty at the level of acclaim and the legacy she's built. “Well I obviously, I think, been spending all these years thoroughly enjoying myself producing these books,” she told Jack Tame. “It sounds a bit, you know, I've been indulging myself, and I have, doing these things, but no, it's been great fun.” Dodd's love of wordplay and language stems back to her childhood, as her parents were, in her words, much into words, and there was an “awful lot of fun” with language in her home. “Both my parents were fond of books, and also fond of fun, and so, you know, obviously there were serious times as well, but there was a lot of fun with words,” she explained. “My father and I used to make up games, make up sort of imaginary animals and all sorts of silly things and have nonsense conversations about them.” The language used in her home was also a contrast to the things she was given to read at school, which were “incredibly old-fashioned". “There were, you know, millions of gnomes and fairies and bits and pieces, and it was talking down kind of language,” Dodd told Tame. “And I got a bit bored by those books, and it was only much later on, when I met books like Dr Suess', I suddenly realised you could be mad with language and have a fantastic time.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In the 1960s and 70s, a group of black filmmakers at UCLA produced a diverse collection of films to challenge Hollywood’s depiction of black communities. In California, who did this segregation serve? Our guest confirms it was the interests of “citrus capitalism” in Orange County. The famous Supreme Court Case Broad v Board of Education challenged segregation in public schools. But there was another precedent, the Mendes et al case, that challenged segregation and education in California against Mexican-Americans.
