In this eye-opening episode, Ross Rosenberg introduces his groundbreaking Human Magnet Syndrome Workbook and unveils his powerful "Alpha Narcissist Theory."Drawing from decades of clinical experience and deep psychological insight, Rosenberg explores the rarely discussed dynamic that occurs when two narcissists enter a relationship—a battle of control, manipulation, and dominance. He explains how, in these high-conflict partnerships, one narcissist inevitably emerges as the more dominant figure—the Alpha Narcissist—while the other assumes a more submissive, enabling role, even if both exhibit narcissistic traits. This compelling theory sheds new light on how narcissistic relationships don't just implode—but can actually stabilize when a clear hierarchy is established.Consider subscribing to Ross Rosenberg's/Self-Love Recovery Institute's new Patreon Subscription, where you can access exclusive content, insights, and services. https://www.patreon.com/RossRosenbergSLRIatreon Recharge with David KoChats with Kevin Bacon, Chelsea Handler, Jordan Chiles, Common and Sheryl Lee RalphListen on: Apple Podcasts SpotifySupport the showABOUT ROSS ROSENBERG Ross Rosenberg, M.Ed., LCPC, CADC, is a psychotherapist, educator, expert witness, and celebrated author. Ross Rosenberg and Jerry Weiss discuss codependency and its effects on identity and family dynamics. Jerry, a recovering codependent, shares how codependency impacted his self-esteem and happiness. They introduce Murray Bowen's family systems theory, highlighting how interconnected family behaviors influence individual identities and can perpetuate issues like codependency and narcissism across generations, illustrated by the concept of "family system Wi-Fi."The hosts also explore self-differentiation, the process of separating one's identity from family influences, which is often resisted in dysfunctional families. They use analogies like a thermostat and escape velocity to describe the challenges of breaking free from unhealthy dynamics. The episode touches on the cycle of hope experienced by codependents in relationships with narcissists, who often neglect their own needs for validation. As the conversation unfolds, they stress the importance of self-focus and the potential loss of relationships during the journey of self-love and recovery. Jerry provides resources for support, including coaching and free training on his website. The episode concludes by encouraging listeners to reflect on their experiences and the systemic nature of their relational patterns, promoting healing and self-discovery.ABOUT ROSS ROSENBERG Ross Rosenberg, M.Ed., LCPC, CADC, is a psychotherapist, educator, expert witness, and celebrated author. In this video, Ross Rosenberg elaborates on his "Humanization Trick" concept, shifting the focus from the manipulative tactics of narcissists to the role of individuals with Self-Love Deficit Disorder (SLD) or codependency in this dynamic. He explains that codependents unconsciously engage in the "Humanization Trick" by convincing themselves that their narcissistic partners deserve sympathy, compassion, and empathy, even in the face of abusive behavior. This self-deception arises from deep fears of abandonment, pathological loneliness, and core shame. Their dread of being alone and feelings of unworthiness lead them to rationalize their partner's mistreatment rather than confront the harsh realities of the relationship. This internalized trick ultimately keeps them trapped in toxic cycles, reinforcing their emotional dependency on the narcissist.Consider subscribing to Ross Rosenberg's/Self-Love Recovery Institute's new Patreon Subscription, where you can access exclusive content, insights, and services.ABOUT ROSS ROSENBERG Ross Rosenberg, M.Ed., LCPC, CADC, is a psychotherapist, educator, expert witness, and celebrated author. In this episode, Brook welcomes back Ross Rosenberg, author of The Human Magnet Syndrome and The Codependency Revolution, to dive deeper into the concept of Self-Love Deficit Disorder (SLDD)—a groundbreaking reframing of codependency. Together, they unpack how early attachment trauma shapes relationship dynamics, leading many into repeated cycles of caretaking, emotional depletion, and entanglement with narcissistic partners. Brook and Ross explore the toxic push-pull that arises in high-conflict co-parenting and divorce, where unresolved SLDD patterns often collide with personality disorders. Through the lens of disengagement and strategic self-awareness, they offer insight on how to stop "wrestling with pigs" and begin creating clarity, calm, and lasting change. Ross Rosenberg addresses a question from his Self-Love Mailbag: 1. What prevents individuals with narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) and borderline personality disorder (BPD) from understanding the emotional pain they cause to others?2. What are the origins of the deep-seated shame experienced by people with NPD and BPD?3. What are the reasons that individuals with these disorders often struggle to feel empathy for others?4. What causes the intense fear of abandonment commonly seen in individuals with borderline personality disorder?Be sure to leave another question to be answered in the next installment of the Self-Love Mailbag. Ross Rosenberg introduces the term "Valentine's Day Narcissist," describing it as an individual with one of three pathological narcissistic disorders—Borderline, Antisocial, or Narcissistic Personality Disorder—and their manipulative behaviors specifically exhibited on Valentine's Day. He explains that their primary tactic involves "love bombing," a form of gaslighting, to win over those with self-love deficit disorder, also known as codependency. Through this strategy, they craft an image of themselves as devoted and affectionate partners, while in reality, their actions are anything but loving. The Self-Love Recovery Institute's Self-Love Mailbag is mentioned in the podcast. In this touching episode, Ross Rosenberg delves into the essential principles of codependency recovery, which he calls "self-love recovery." With clarity, compassion, and empathy, he presents a compelling explanation for how individuals with self-love deficit disorder (codependency) can break free from their long-standing pattern of getting involved with destructive narcissists and instead embrace a life filled with abundant self-love.He emphasizes that while codependents, or Self-Love Deficient individuals (SLDs), are never to blame for the abuse they endure in relationships with narcissists, taking personal responsibility is essential to healing. Drawing on his Human Magnet Syndrome framework, he explains how SLDs are unconsciously drawn to narcissists due to deeply ingrained relationship templates formed during childhood. These factors create a powerful, unconscious attraction to narcissistic partners, who initially seem familiar and safe but ultimately lead to dysfunctional relationships. Ross highlights that SLDs often stay in these relationships due to pathological loneliness, core shame, and relationship addiction, despite the harmful impact on themselves and their loved ones. In this episode, Ross Rosenberg dives into the metaphor of a "parasite" to explain the toxic dynamic between codependents (Self-Love Deficients or SLDs) and pathological narcissists.Building on concepts from his books, The Human Magnet Syndrome and The Codependency Revolution, Ross explains how narcissists, much like parasites, rely on the life force of codependents to survive.Ross emphasizes that healing from this destructive relationship pattern requires addressing the deeper wounds of Self-Love Deficit Disorder/SLDD (codependency), which originates from childhood attachment trauma. He introduces his Self-Love Recovery Treatment program and the HITCH trauma resolution technique as methods for breaking free from the parasitic narcissist's hold.Learn how to stop giving your life force to a “parasite” and begin your journey to self-love recovery.ABOUT ROSS ROSENBERG Ross Rosenberg, M.Ed., LCPC, CADC, is a psychotherapist, educator, expert witness, and celebrated author. For most 12-step groups, a chemical or substance is the culprit, but for others like CoDA, it is a pattern of behavior that creates chaos and unmanageability in their life. In this video, Ross Rosenberg explains why CoDA has been flawed since its inception and continues to be so. Through a historical analysis of the organization, he shows how CoDA's “co-dependency” term originated from 1950s alcohol and drug treatment programs attempt to understand the partners of alcoholics or “co-alcoholics.” When the field shifted to “chemical dependency” as the catch-all term for all addictions, including alcohol, the term briefly shifted to co-chemical dependency. Having too many letters/words, it was almost immediately shorted to “co-dependency.” CoDA's step one identifies its co-dependent's primary out-of-control compulsion as trying to change or controlling people who are unwilling or unable to change. Ross Rosenberg's emotionally evocative podcast captures the terror, fear, and anxiety of being an abuse victim by a loved one who has borderline personality disorder. He not only explains the experience but also offers life-saving advice on how to survive it. Similar to his previous videos on BPD (which have amassed 1.8 million views), he provides insights from his distinctive perspective as a mental health service provider with a one-of-a-kind intellect.A decade later, Rosenberg once again presents a heart-wrenching account of the horrifying realities endured by those who have suffered abuse at the hands of someone with borderline personality disorder.DISCLAIMER: This podcast does not aim to criticize the extremely challenging psychological condition known as BPD. Instead, it serves as a helpful resource for individuals who have been hurt, abused, and/or traumatized by those with this diagnosis. The intention is not to highlight the negative aspects of people diagnosed with BPD but rather to offer a valuable mental health resource for those who have experienced abuse from their loved ones who suffer from this disorder. Sadly, the unfortunate reality is that individuals with BPD often end up hurting the people they care about or hold dear. While I possess a considerable understanding of the disorder, I must clarify that I am not a specialist or an expert in its treatment. My expertise lies in working with individuals whom I classify as "Self-Love Deficients" (codependents) suffering from Self-Love Deficit Disorder (codependency). It is important to note that I do not represent individuals with BPD, nor do I make any attempts to do so.Instead, I am a psychotherapist specializing in offering mental health services to individuals who identify as SLDs (codependents) and those who have experienced trauma. My focus revolves around empowering individuals, facilitating their healing, and assisting them in breaking free from abusive relationships. You can witness this dedication in my book, "The Human Magnet Syndrome," as well as in my various videos and training resources.I want to clarify that my intention is not to cast blame on individuals with BPD but rather to provide support and guidance to my clients in breaking free from toxic and abusive relationships. My work focuses on empowering those who seek to heal their psychological wounds and are willing to take personal responsibility for their actions.Support the show

Definition: Performative caring, also known as pseudo-care, is when someone shows care for a secondary personal gain. It can be a form of pathological altruism, and can involve: Questions: 1. What does genuine nurture look/feel/sound like? How can you recognize the difference between genuine nurturing versus nurturing with a motive? 2. How can the preconceived notion that “women are nurtures” create unrealistic expectations for women in relationships? How do these expectations create false narratives and entitlement surrounding care, nurturing and feminine roles within relationships? 3. What role does attachment style play in a person's ability to nurture? Are there connections that can be drawn between attachment style, vulnerability and a person's ability to give and/or receive nurturing? 4. Is performance a byproduct of a lack of nurturing? What distinguishes the mindset of a nurtured person going into relationships vs the non nurtured individual? 5. Is the desire to be validated the driving force behind performative care? If so, could the same be said for the person receiving the so-called care? Are both individuals demonstrating a lack of self worth by seeking validation in different ways? 6. How can the concept of performative caring be seen in the context of social media influencers and celebrities who often promote charitable causes or social justice issues for personal gain or to enhance their public image? 7. Can performative care be a learned behavior from childhood experiences or societal influences? How does childhood trauma or neglect contribute to the development of pseudo-care tendencies in individuals? 8. In what ways can performative caring be harmful to both the individual exhibiting this behavior and the recipient of their supposed care? How does it impact genuine relationships and emotional connection? 9. How can individuals who engage in performative caring work towards developing authentic empathy and compassion without ulterior motives? Is it possible to unlearn pseudo-care behaviors and cultivate genuine care and nurturing instincts? 10. Is there a connection between performative caring and narcissistic tendencies or manipulation tactics? How can one differentiate between genuine care and manipulation disguised as care? 11. How does the concept of performative caring tie into the power dynamics within relationships, especially in romantic partnerships or professional settings? Can pseudo-care be a tool for control or manipulation in such dynamics? 12. What are the psychological motivations behind engaging in performative caring behaviors? How do factors such as insecurity, low self-esteem, or fear of rejection play a role in seeking validation through pseudo-care actions? 13. How can individuals identify and confront their own tendencies towards performative caring? What steps can one take to cultivate authentic care and empathy towards others without seeking personal gain or validation? 14. Is there a spiritual or philosophical perspective on the concept of performative caring, as explored by thinkers like Krishnamurti or Wayne Dyer? How do spiritual teachings emphasize the importance of genuine compassion and selfless service? 15. Can the practice of mindfulness and self-awareness help individuals recognize and overcome their tendencies towards pseudo-care? How can practices such as meditation or introspection lead to a deeper understanding of one's true intentions and motivations in relationships? 1. **What does genuine nurture look/feel/sound like? Today, we have the author of The Human Magnet Syndrome, Ross Rosenberg. I talk with him about his new book, The Codependency Revolution: Fixing What Was Always Broken. What is this monster called codependency that no one seems to understand? It is so hard to understand narcissism, and it is equally hard to understand codependency. In Ross's words, “I see codependency as a relationship problem, not an individual problem. A codependent is defined by their choice of relationship partners. To understand codependency, you have to understand pathological narcissism.” On this dive down the rabbit hole of narcissism, let's also dig into the concept of codependency. https://www.selfloverecovery.com/

Ross uses the "bait and switch" term to explain the furtive and manipulative manner in which pathological narcissists present unrealistic and untrue versions of themselves to "close the deal" on a new relationship. Like scrupulous car salesman, they offer all the "bells and whistles" to distract the "buyer" into believing they are getting a tremendous deal and should be happy about it. Deceptive narcissists use this manipulative technique to prey upon the vulnerabilities of people with self-love deficit disorder (codependency), who believe only in what they see and what is promised, and not what is hidden and withheld. Ross Rosenberg discusses codependency/self-love deficit disorder addiction and how it fools people into believing their happiness is real. He explains how pathological narcissists exploit vulnerable codependents/SLD's by making them believe the initial false love can be brought back/rekindled."Drug Happiness" represents the codependent's belief that the Human Magnet Syndrome compelled "soulmate" experience is real and lasting. In truth, it is a temporary condition that disappears shortly after the beginning of the relationship. Pathological narcissists who are afraid of losing their SLD partner may try to re-enact the beginning of the relationship to make their partner believe in the drug happiness delusion. Today's episode is a shift from the last two. In this episode, Lauren focuses on the “continuum of self-values” created by Ross Rosenberg in his book “Human Magnet Syndrome.” This continuum orders human behavior based on 11 numerical values to represent the full range of self in relationship to others. These numerical values range from -5 to +5. A zero is the perfect balance of one's self and another's orientation, very few, if any people fall in the zero category. The negative side of the spectrum puts the needs of others before your own with the higher number being more mentally ill. The positive side of the spectrum puts their own needs before the needs of others with the higher numbers becoming more selfish and narcissistic. The goal of a relationship is to find someone and make your number come closer to zero. So a -2 partnering with a +2. This is called a zero sum relationship. Lauren answers this week's listener question during the episode: How can we best identify signs of stress in students?Try-at-home tip: Notice the sounds around you. Ross continues to break new ground with his discoveries about gaslighting, primarily how pathological narcissists use it against their self-love deficient (codependent) victims. While reflecting on his childhood, Ross discovered that gaslighting narratives can be implanted by what someone neglects to say, withholds, or purposely deprives a person of. In this video, Ross Rosenberg, M.Ed., LCPC, CADC, introduces his "Iceberg Hypothesis," which uses an iceberg as a metaphor for a pathological narcissist. Like narcissists, an iceberg only shows a small portion of itself on the surface, while hiding most of itself beneath the water.Narcissists, especially covert narcissists or someone with antisocial personality disorder (sociopath), often portray themselves as kind, respectful, giving, and loving on the "surface," but in reality, they are hiding the dark, controlling, selfish and angry side of themselves "beneath the water."► Visit Self-Love Recovery Institute:https://www.selfloverecovery.com► Listen to the podcast on all major platforms:https://selfloverecovery.buzzsprout.com► Ross Rosenberg's Links:YouTube Channel: https://youtube.com/RossRosenbergFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheCodependencyCureInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/rossrosenberg_slriTwitter: https://www.twitter.com/RossRosenberg1TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@rossrosenberg► Ross Rosenberg's BiographyRoss Rosenberg M.Ed., LCPC, CADC is a psychotherapist, educator, expert witness, and celebrated author. In this episode, Ross Rosenberg, M.Ed., LCPC, CADC, uses bread as a metaphor for love, respect, care, and trust (LRCT), to explain why codependents or Self-Love Deficients (SLDs) are raised in such a way to accept “breadcrumbs” of LRCT and not feel deserving or worthy of a full “piece of bread.”After a childhood in which the SLD develops attachment trauma, they develop romantic relationships, often with pathological narcissists, who continue to deprive them of LRCT and further strengthen their gaslit beliefs that they are not deserving of having the LRCT reciprocated. As a result, the SLD reassures themselves they are “full” despite only receiving “breadcrumbs,” but the reality is, they are “starving.”► Visit Self-Love Recovery Institute:https://www.selfloverecovery.com► Listen to the podcast on all major platforms:https://selfloverecovery.buzzsprout.com► Ross Rosenberg's Links:YouTube Channel: https://youtube.com/RossRosenbergFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheCodependencyCureInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/rossrosenberg_slriTwitter: https://www.twitter.com/RossRosenberg1TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@rossrosenberg► Ross Rosenberg's BiographyRoss Rosenberg M.Ed., LCPC, CADC is a psychotherapist, educator, expert witness, and celebrated author. In this episode, Ross Rosenberg, M.Ed., LCPC, CADC explains the importance for a person recovering from Self-Love Deficit Disorder/SLDD (codependency) to be honest to themselves about the harm they caused others, especially their children. The person with SLDD—the SLD, is often unaware of their brick wall of denial that keeps them "safe" from the real and honest truth: if they were not so afraid of being alone or lonely, had better self-esteem, and loved themselves more, they would have stuck up for themselves, set better boundaries, and protected their children better from their narcissistic partner's harm. The very best way to break through the SLD's denial systems, is to facilitate their awareness of being sacrificed by their own SLD parent, for very same reasons they have sacrificed their own children. ► Visit Self-Love Recovery Institute:https://www.selfloverecovery.com► Listen to the podcast on all major platforms:https://selfloverecovery.buzzsprout.com► Ross Rosenberg's Links:YouTube Channel: https://youtube.com/RossRosenbergFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheCodependencyCureInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/rossrosenberg_slriTwitter: https://www.twitter.com/RossRosenberg1TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@rossrosenberg► Ross Rosenberg's BiographyRoss Rosenberg M.Ed., LCPC, CADC is a psychotherapist, educator, expert witness, and celebrated author.
