The original CRAFT is outcome-driven and behavioral-based, aimed at getting people into treatment. Allies has made it more connection- and relationship-oriented, focused on listening and communication. The same skill set Allies focuses on -- validating, not arguing, not giving advice or challenging someone's reality or perception -- often works with someone dealing with mental health challenges. Creating that space helps that person feel calm and heard.

In this week's episode of Off the Cuff with Danny LoPriore, I'm talking with Alishia McCullough –  writer, co-founder of the Amplify Melanated Voices Movement, and millennial Licensed Clinical Mental Health Therapist. Together, we explore her work as a therapist, how the field still lacks diversity and inclusion, and generational trauma and PTSD in communities of color.    “I will say in a lot of the programs that are PWI programs, which for folks who might not know, Predominantly White Institutions, I think those programs are still catching up to thinking about diversity or thinking about social identity and how treatment models look different..  I really would like for more programs to incorporate and integrate other lenses into this treatment because that's what helps us work with different people.” (7:30)   We touch on New Age white guilt, how the last few years have impacted her work as a black woman in the field, and why people of color need to set solid boundaries around their work, energy, and time.    “When you're like, No, I'm not doing it,' that's when you get all of that defense around, ‘Well, why not? Didn't you want us to learn about racism?'” (22:12)    As a clinician that specifically helps individuals through eating disorders, we also explore diet culture and how to ground your body through the feelings that come with food. Lastly, we break down how a history of slavery can be presented in modern-day institutions, why standardized systems abandon the unique qualities of each person, and why she decided to build her company, Black and Embodied Counseling and Consulting. Keep an eye out for her next book, which will come out within the next year!    “I'm currently working on – well, finishing up – a book called Claiming the Black Body. It's gonna be huge. It's really based on eating disorders and black communities and the trauma and the embodiment – all the things we've been talking about – alongside unpacking the healing work as well.” (56:11)   In This Episode:  (1:39) What it's like being Millennial in this profession (3:50) The life events that pushed her into this field  (6:41) How curriculum is lagging in terms of inclusion  (8:48) Why representation matters in mental health work (11:31) How Alishia's personal experiences inform her understanding of what people of color might need in a clinical setting (14:38) PTSD in black communities  (18:41) The individual effects of colonization and slavery on people of color (20:30) Alishia's experience with white guilt as a therapist (26:22) How to begin changing your relationship with food  (35:08) The outdated ideals the healthcare system uses to determine health/wellness  (39:35) The correlation between professional sports and slavery (45:34) Why physical health is unique to each person  (47:46) How Alishia began Black and Embodied  (52:45) Her thoughts on Black Lives Matter (55:42) The hopes that Alishia has for her future and her impact on the world  (59:10) “I actually am. Oregon is consistently ranked one of the worst states in the country when it comes to access to mental health care. And fewer than one in five mental health care providers in the state is a person of color. Rep. Janelle Bynum has proposed a bill to make several policy changes in order to increase recruiting and retention of mental health care clinicians of color. One of those changes would be to reduce the number of direct supervision hours with clients that clinicians are required to complete to get their license. Currently, counselors in Oregon are required to complete 2,400 direct supervision hours with clients. In comparison, the state of Washington only requires half that. Bynum's bill proposes that Oregon reduces its required hours to 1,200 to be in line with Washington. Proponents of the bill say that change would reduce the barriers to becoming licensed in Oregon and could result in more diversity among clinicians.Keleigh Blount is a licensed mental health counselor and an assistant professor of counseling at George Fox University. “In Western countries there was a certain reduction in the importance of the father. I think there is a confusion here between the importance of the father or at least the father function with the authoritarian father, the patriarchal father, that figure that arouses so much suspicion and reactions against.”   Description: Dr. Harvey Schwartz welcomes Dr. Claudio Laks Eizirik who is a Training and Supervising Analyst at the Porto Alegre Psychoanalytic Society in Brazil. He is Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, former president of the IPA and the recipient of The Sigourney Award in 2011. Currently, he is chair of the IPA’s International New Groups Committee. His main areas of interest are psychoanalytic training and practice, the process of aging, and the relation of psychoanalysis and culture.   In today’s episode, Dr. Eizirik dives deep into the meaning of the fathering function, which exists in our minds and later emerges in our analysis, and also exists in the political sphere, both in our national politics and in the capacity of our leaders. Dr. Eizirik evidences a life built upon the richness of this fathering function.   Key takeaways: [6:14] Dr. Eizirik talks about the health and the political health currently in Brazil. [9:05] The reaction of the psychoanalytic community in Brazil to the pandemic and the current political situation. [10:56] Psychoanalysis is seen as a living force in the Brazilian current scene. [12:29] The fathering function in the office and how it applies politically. [15:24] The role of the father has been neglected by psychoanalysis due to the emphasis in the relationship between mother and baby. [16:15] The confusion between the father principle with the authoritarian father. [18:25] Winnicott’s meaning for the word “democracy”. [19:40] We are seeing in many countries the presence of leaders who don´t understand the role of a father, someone who inspires, leads, shows empathy and compassion, and instead take an authoritarian stance. [21:44] How does the father function live in the minds of daughters and sons? [24:26] Dr. Eizirik shares disguised clinical material. [29:55] How is Dr.Eizirik sustains himself during this crisis.   Mentioned in this episode: IPA Off the Couch www.ipaoffthecouch.org   Recommended Readings: Eizirik, CL ( 2020) Uma vez mais, ‘ O OVO da Serpente” ? There are parts of our mental health system that are broken and need change. One of these is simply a mindset. The inability to take on patients realities does not mean perpetuating or condoning their reality in the mental health field. But it does mean validating their emotions as real and stepping into their first person perspective. I also means questioning our own reality. We need to close the distance between psychologist and patient, if people aren’t connected and able to accommodate each other's reality, real growth cannot occur. In this episode, Teal swan goes into detail about specifically what needs to change.

Mental illness affects one in four people.  Jules was born in Budapest, Hungary. He and his family escaped in 1957, right after the Hungarian Revolution in 1956.  Jules attended Calvary Chapel Bible School, Vineyard School of Ministry, and Regent University, where he worked on his Master's in Communication.     Jules always had a relationship with God, starting early in his childhood. He has lived in California since 1964. Jules served time in the military as a grunt line medic and a paramedic in the Army. He worked in the Mental Health Field in the State of California for over 10 years. It was after this that he got into Business Development and worked for several major corporations including Novell, Merisel and Office Depot.       In his earlier years he was principle dancer for The Karpatok Hungarian Folk Ensemble. During the time the story takes place he got involved in the Acting Industry and acted in several TV shows like: The Shield, Unsolved Mysteries, True Blood (Promo), Dirty Soap (Pilot) and Bottom Feeders (Pilot). He also did several commercials including KIA, Sherwin Williams, ESPN and Sprint. Jules had roles in several theater and film productions, most recently “Selling Rosario.” “We Have Your Daughter”: Bold & Emotive Memoir Navigates Mental Illness & Courts, as Author Fights to Save Family.  Written by Jules Czudar after an eight-year battle to find his daughter, kidnapped by his wife suffering the afflictions of mental illness, “We Have Your Daughter” puts parental rights, mental illness itself and the U.S. court system under the spotlight. While shocking in places yet one-hundred percent true, Czudar's story opens a vital dialogue into one of society's most ignored epidemics.

Another mass murder of 18 children an 8 adults in a Public School. We are still schocked but getting used to what is a regular occurence. What story do we tell ourselves, and especially our children, to make sense of what can morally only be called ultimate evil. Soon enough the experts in the so-called Mental Health Field will tell us this was the work of a psychotic, very sick mind. The psychiatric created national fairy tale will once again be told and we will be even more in the dark about this monstrous event than if we didn't try to explain it at all. This show will discuss the elements of a story about a society in which these events not only make sense but are completely predictable. It is time we create a new story in which we are all involved and in which we all take responsibility for our dying culture and what might be done about it.
