How can innovative technologies like VR and neuromodulation improve how we understand and treat PTSD? How can curiosity and leadership open doors in neuroscience and mental health? What does it take to build a meaningful career impacting millions? In this inspiring episode of Neurocareers: Doing the Impossible!, Dr. Milena Korostenskaja (Dr. K) sits down with Prof. Deborah Beidel — Trustee Chair and Pegasus Professor of Psychology and Medical Education, and Executive Director of UCF RESTORES — to explore a career built on courage, innovation, and compassion. Career Development with Purpose Prof. Beidel shares how her early desire to be a detective evolved into a lifelong career as a clinical psychologist. Guided by curiosity, she carved her path by listening deeply to patient stories, identifying underexplored research gaps, and taking bold steps into leadership roles. “Not everything works out, but everything's a learning experience,” she says — a mantra that defines her career resilience. She also offers valuable career advice for students, including: Why it's okay not to know your path early on How to create your own opportunities instead of waiting for them Why leadership is often about building — people, programs, and impact How to approach mentors, research projects, and rejection with strategy and grace This episode features questions submitted by members of the Neuroscience Alliance at UCF — a student group making waves in shaping the future of neuroscience education (listen to their episode here: https://www.neuroapproaches.org/podcast/episode/f59186d5/neuroscience-alliance-at-ucf-with-sudeepta-matha-andrei-nesterenko-mae-torra-charisse-melendez-and-prof-kiminobu-sugaya). The Neuroscience of PTSD Prof. Beidel dives deep into the evolving understanding of post-traumatic stress disorder. Listeners will learn: Why PTSD is not just a psychological issue, but a sensory and neurological one The overlooked power of smell in trauma memory and treatment How PTSD affects more than just veterans — including first responders, mass shooting survivors, and even ICU patients She also introduces her groundbreaking work with UCF RESTORES, where she leads a three-week, evidence-based treatment program using virtual reality, group therapy, and individualized exposure therapy. “It's like putting out a wildfire with every hose you've got,” she says. New Frontiers in Neurotechnology Prof. Beidel talks about using evoked potentials to differentiate between trauma responses in combat veterans, and the potential of neuromodulation and AI to personalize PTSD treatment. She emphasizes the need for secure, clinician-friendly tech that integrates seamlessly into existing workflows. “The future of PTSD diagnosis and treatment may rely on tools we're just beginning to understand — and the students listening today may be the ones to build them.” Whether you're considering graduate school, already in research, or exploring clinical applications of neuroscience, this episode is a must-listen. Tune in and take notes from one of the leading voices in trauma recovery and career mentorship in psychology and neuroscience. Learn more about Prof. Beidel's work at ucfrestores.com

In this episode, I share my insights about PTSD and CPTSD symptoms that many of us might miss in our daily lives. I talk about how we often chalk up our struggles to just "having a tough life" rather than recognizing underlying trauma. From sleep troubles and anxiety to physical pain and relationship difficulties, I walk through the many ways trauma can show up—sometimes in surprising forms! I also explore the early life experiences that might predispose us to these challenges, like childhood separations, bullying, or family stress. Most importantly, I want you to know that you don't have to just "live with" these symptoms. Through my work with hypnosis, I've seen how addressing the root causes can help people break free from feeling stuck and move forward with more peace and possibility in their lives.   Of course, please feel free to send me YOUR questions anytime, or connect with me for an actual conversation to get them answered.    I definitely look forward to connecting with you anytime! Ep. 171 (Part 2 of 2) | An emotionally powerful and deeply inspiring conversation with renowned embodiment and trauma educator Mark Walsh from the U.K. and Ukrainian psychologist and trauma trainer Kristina Obluchynska, where we learn about effective ways of treating trauma in the middle of an ongoing war, what trauma therapists are left holding, and how beautiful is the human spirit when it embraces right action. When Russia commenced its full-scale invasion of Ukraine three years ago, Mark went to Ukraine, located willing psychology students, educated them in body-oriented trauma therapy and training, and with Kristina and several other trainees co-founded Sane Ukraine, with the urgent mission of preventing an epidemic of trauma disorders in Ukraine. Beginning with applying trauma first aid and teaching resilience skills in places like the local railroad station where people were coming in from the front lines, and in bomb shelters, Kristina and several other psychologists have now educated thousands of people about trauma—active duty soldiers, veterans, survivors, wives of combatants, and first-line responders such as doctors, teachers, and social workers—and trained hundreds of them to become trauma trainers themselves. It is an honor to bear witness to Mark's courageous actions and the humble heroism of Kristina and her team in the face of the devastation being leveled on Ukraine and Ukrainians. “We don't grieve,” Kristina tells us, “because grief comes after safety. We don't even use the word safe anymore,” she continues, “only relatively safe.” Mark points out that modern warfare is not just running around with guns—drones hunt civilians and if you move, they kill you. “Do we all have PTSD?” the soldiers ask. With Sane Ukraine, there is someone to answer their questions and teach them what they can do to help themselves and each other. Resilience comes from relationship—from connection to self, others, nature, and spirit. Does the concept of post traumatic growth even apply considering the intensity of this war? co-host Roger wonders. At the end of this extraordinary, heartfelt conversation, when asked what we could do to help, Kristina advises, “Help the army. We are talking here about healing, but what we really need is to survive.” Recorded January 9, 2025.“It's not reasonable for young women to be talking about mass rape and torture in dark bomb shelters . . . I welcomed back Lori Hammond in today's episode!  In this engaging podcast conversation, Lori Hammond shares her journey into becoming a group hypnosis practitioner, revealing how she discovered the transformative power of group sessions through testing her own program at the time. She discusses building her community, connecting primarily with fellow hypnotists, and how a particular book confirmed her experiences about the enhanced effectiveness of group energy in creating transformation. The discussion explores the delicate balance of giving and receiving in group sessions, with Lori emphasizing the importance of participants being open to their own transformation while supporting others. She shares about a few fun, outside the box, hypnosis experiences she's had, demonstrating hypnosis's effectiveness even in challenging environments. And of course, she chats about her successful weekly "Transypants Tuesday" sessions that she's maintained for approximately seven years, complete with an extensive library of recordings and resources for participants.   Lori Hammond became a professional hypnotist because hypnosis shifted her out of ongoing, clinical depression. Hypnosis changed her life so much that now she loves giving people simple, in-the-moment tools they can use to find freedom from the issues that have haunted them for years… or sometimes decades. Lori has facilitated hundreds of online group hypnosis sessions and has discovered the secrets to infusing transformation in a group setting.     Lori on Facebook   Lori on YouTube     Of course, please feel free to send me YOUR questions anytime, or connect with me for an actual conversation to get them answered.    I definitely look forward to connecting with you anytime! Are you looking for a way to step out of chronic mental illness by resetting your brain? In this episode, we meet Kathryn A. Walker, a former ER and ICU nurse turned CRNA and CEO of Revitalist Lifestyle and Wellness, (with clinics in Florida and Tennessee). Kathryn has witnessed firsthand the limitations of our current mental health system, where patients are often left feeling stigmatized, unsupported, not listened to by doctors, and chronically ill with a ‘one size fits all approach that does not help them. Through years of intensive training as a psychiatric nurse and anesthetist, Kathryn noticed how deeply connected all our organs are to one another and to our brain. She saw firsthand the emotional toll of physical ailment, and conversely, the physiological manifestations of psychological trauma. And she learned how to give the brain a reset in a fast, safe way. This conversation with Kathryn may give you hope. She is a passionate advocate for psychedelic-assisted therapy as a powerful tool for healing. She believes that by treating the whole person – mind, body, and spirit – we can finally start to address the root causes of mental health issues and achieve lasting remission. While research is ongoing in this field of science, its potential will revolutionize psychiatry. In this episode, you'll learn: The limitations of the current mental health system How psychedelic medicine can help heal trauma and improve mental well-being Why a one-size-fits-all approach to treatment doesn't work The importance of integrating mental and physical health care How to reframe your view on mental health and take steps towards healing How safe ketamine and magic mushrooms are and why they are not something to take simply because we don't feel well Don't miss this groundbreaking episode! Feel free to contact her at her clinic to understand if you are suitable for this kind of treatment. An initial consultation with Kathryn costs less than $50. It's December! And a time when so many people struggle. I'm sharing, once again, an interview I did with an amazing person around a group called Catch, and healing PTSD/CPTSD. If it can help one person, as they say, I'm all in! Here's part 2 for you.   I'm thrilled to have Sarah back on the podcast to talk about her amazing organization, CatchPTSD. We dive into how clinical hypnotherapy is making a huge difference for people dealing with PTSD and other traumas. You'll hear about the unique methods, how it all started, and some inspiring success stories from the personalized and group therapy sessions available on CatchPTSD.com. Plus, we highlight the power of social media in spreading the word and encourage everyone to share the CatchPTSD initiative to help those who could really use these life-changing resources. Sarah Yuen Gilliat is a registered clinical hypnotherapist, specializing in trauma and PTSD, trained and certified. She came to clinical hypnotherapy after a 30-year career as an international broadcast correspondent, and a government, corporate and military strategic communications consultant. After spending two years in Afghanistan, deployed with UK, US, Danish and Afghan troops as combat camera, plus three decades covering conflicts and natural disasters around the world, she chose to study clinical hypnotherapy, specifically to help traumatised people with PTSD-type symptoms.  During her training, she was led to study the work of John G. Watkins, an American military psychiatrist in WW2, who used clinical hypnotherapy to heal American soldiers coming back from the European front, as well as others who did the same.  In each instance, clinical hypnotherapy worked wonders to heal traumatised minds and bodies of shell shock/combat fatigue/PTSD. She's an amazing person to talk with and one of my favorite things she says is that she is looking forward to spending the rest of my life helping people eliminate their PTSD symptoms and take back control of their body and their lives. Today's episode features a presentation of the Minwalla Model of Deceptive Sexuality and Complex Trauma Treatment. In 2006, Dr. Omar Minwalla began to study the signs of Complex Trauma related stress in people whose spouses had committed infidelity. Minwalla's powerful educational metaphor, the “Secret Sexual Basement”, has made the personal, relational, and sociological abuses that comprise deceptive sexuality accessible to everyone.  By putting the spotlight on the harms of “deceptive sexuality,” Minwalla shows how clinically significant deficits in integrity enable infidelity and can rise to the level of an Integrity Abuse Disorder, which he categorizes as a form of intimate partner abuse.  From here we take Minwalla's model a step further and posit that closeted LGBT+ spouses in mixed orientation marriages have a Secret Sexual Basement of their own. This compartmentalized secret sexual reality not only contains secret sexual behaviors that may or may not be going on, but also contains their hidden or obscured sexual orientation or gender identity. It's not just that deception is employed to cover infidelity, it's that, intentional or not, deception may be deployed to cover sexuality itself. In the case of marriage closets, as with infidelity, concealment behaviors, manipulation and deceptive management of straight spouses constitutes patterns of emotional, psychological and relational harm that may give rise to symptoms of complex trauma in straight spouses.  DR. Dr. Carol and Kim Pittis discuss various FSM case studies, including a fascinating case of an eight-year-old injury turned chronic pain condition, treated successfully with FSM techniques. From working with athletes for enhanced recovery, the benefits of pre-surgical FSM treatments, and techniques for improving chronic instability and scarring. It also touches on the intricacies of treating shoulder injuries and the importance of understanding the underlying causes behind scar tissue formation. Insights into managing energy fields, addressing the treatment of tick-borne diseases, and a Q&A session covering topics like animal care with FSM, mold and Lyme testing, and more.    00:55 Hawaii Trip and Master Class Highlights 02:05 Case Report: Chronic Pain from an Old Injury 07:34 Discussion on Treatment Protocols 10:02 Questions and Reflections on Basics 14:49 Scar Tissue and Trauma Treatment 24:00 Pre-Surgery Preparation and Athlete Care 28:20 Wound Healing with FSM 30:22 Case Study: SI Joint Sprain 31:20 Challenges in Treating Shoulder Instability 33:38 Patient Case: Chronic Shoulder Pain 38:33 FSM for Pets 41:12 Energy Field Exercise 46:04 Neurofeedback and FSM 48:03 Treating Bone and Connective Tissue Issues 52:04 Preferred Labs for Mold and Lyme Testing 55:23 Upcoming Events   #### Spreading the FSM Message Before diving into the intricacies of FSM therapy, we would like to encourage our readers to help spread the message about the benefits of frequency-specific microcurrent therapy. This can be done by liking our content, subscribing to our YouTube channel, or following us on any podcast app. For further information, podcast transcripts are available at FrequencySpecific.com. If you have any questions, please leave them in the comments for us to address.   #### FSM Seminar Adventures Our recent seminar held in Hawaii was an unforgettable experience. Despite the peculiar weather—rain in the mountains and sunshine at the beach—the session itself was remarkable. We had an impressive turnout: an acupuncturist from Belgium, two naturopaths from Poland, and professionals from Taiwan and Australia. The sheer diversity of participants made it an enriching experience for everyone involved.   #### A Case Study with Fascinating Outcomes One notable theme from the seminar was understanding the history of injuries to guide physical examinations. We discussed a case involving a woman who suffered a severe injury eight years prior. Despite the injury's age, we applied FSM techniques like concussion and vagus nerve frequencies, along with specialized protocols for her low back and neck pain. Remarkably, just treating the specific areas such as the SI joints and cervical spine had profound impacts on alleviating her thumb pain, which was traced back to her C6 vertebrae.   #### Exploring Treatment Protocols The seminar provided us another critical insight: the importance of understanding "why" behind the scarring. By focusing on the fundamental reasons, such as trauma and inflammation, and utilizing FSM frequencies to address these, we could significantly improve outcomes. For instance, prehab with FSM protocols has proven crucial for athletes awaiting surgeries, optimizing their recovery and ensuring better surgical outcomes.   #### The Essence of Proper History Taking We emphasized the necessity of thorough history-taking to determine the focus areas for physical exams and treatments. For example, in chronic conditions, functionalities like concussion in Vegas and specialized disc protocols have shown incredible results by not only resolving the immediate symptoms but also restoring overall balance and vitality in patients.   #### Energy Management in Practice A recurring topic was managing one's energy field while practicing FSM. Often, practitioners might find their energy sapped by patients, leading to exhaustion. At the master class, we conducted an exercise to help practitioners maintain their energy field, ensuring it doesn't extend beyond personal boundaries, thereby preventing energy drain.   #### Practical Applications of FSM FSM isn't limited to humans; it extends to animals too, especially for calming or decreasing sensations in pets like cats and dogs. Utilizing foundational FSM frequencies can help reduce anxiety and improve their response to grooming and medical treatments.   #### Obstacles Make Us Innovate From treating bumpy shin bones to tackling chronic instability, we shared numerous anecdotes revealing FSM's versatility. Each case—from complex postoperative recovery scenarios to reshaping treatment protocols for shoulder instabilities—poignantly illustrated the power of FSM when combined with a deep understanding of anatomy and patient history.   #### Queries from the FSM Community We concluded with a Q&A session, answering queries about testing for mold and Lyme disease, how to use FSM for calming pets, and managing energy vampires in a treatment setting.

Today's guest, Sarah Rollins of Embodied Wellness, shares insights into somatic experiencing and its importance in therapy.Sarah describes her unique journey, including performing at Carnegie Hall with a klezmer band during her middle school years. Despite initially pursuing somatic experiencing training during her time as a mental health therapist, she found it challenging to integrate this body-focused trauma treatment within her agency's traditional framework. The pandemic provided an unexpected opportunity for her to launch Embodied Wellness, allowing her to address the rising need for trauma-informed care.We explore the mind-body connection, a core concept of somatic experiencing. Sarah explains how physical symptoms, such as stomach aches or chest fluttering, can be manifestations of trauma. This understanding challenges the often-separate view of physical ailments and mental health. Jon shares his own experiences with anxiety, reinforcing Sarah's points about the profound impact of emotional distress on the body. The episode takes a practical turn as Sarah demonstrates a brief somatic exercise with Jon, highlighting the process of identifying and addressing physical sensations linked to stress. She emphasizes the importance of recognizing these sensations without overwhelming the client, suggesting techniques like focusing on a smaller percentage of the sensation to make it more manageable. We also delve into various therapeutic techniques such as EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), where bilateral stimulation helps reprocess traumatic events to reduce distress. Sarah explains that while the memory of the trauma remains, the distress associated with it diminishes.Additionally, the discussion touches on the importance of mental health in the workplace. Sarah underscores the necessity for employees to learn emotional regulation and effective communication to foster a healthier work environment. We discuss how emotional intelligence (EQ) is crucial for professional interactions, a sentiment echoed by Jon's anecdote about workplace dynamics.Lisa shares her own strategies for managing stress and anxiety in her real estate career, highlighting breathing techniques and the significance of addressing the nervous system. This practical advice aligns with Sarah's emphasis on having a variety of tools to handle different situations.Sarah's key takeaway for listeners seeking therapy is the importance of finding a therapist they feel comfortable with, comparing it to the process of dating. Comfort and trust in the therapeutic relationship are crucial for effective treatment. We wrap up the episode with our guest reflecting on her educational journey, notably influenced by a graduate student instructor who helped her understand her own biases without shame. Ep. 132 (Part 3 of 3) | World renowned EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing) therapy pioneer and trainer Dr. Laurel Parnell has used EMDR therapy with clients for decades with truly remarkable success. Laurel relates how EMDR therapy dissolves blocks caused by trauma, freeing clients from negative constructs so they can develop their own felt sense of truth, and express from and know their own true nature. After EMDR, she says, “singers sing, writers write, dancers dance.” Not only are clients freed, but the endpoint of EMDR therapy quite often rests in a transpersonal space that is invariably characterized by an upwelling of self-love and compassion for others, an opening to mystery and boundless possibility. Interestingly, because of the resonant field between therapist and client (interpersonal neurobiology), the therapist experiences the transpersonal opening when it happens as well. More often than not, Laurel tells us, the way the session unfolds is a surprise to both client and therapist, with long forgotten little “t” traumas turning out to be responsible for the client's blocks rather than the expected major life traumas. Laurel makes it clear that the goal of EMDR is to empower the client; the therapist must allow the wisdom to reside in the client rather than in their own interpretation of what unfolds, and adhere strictly to a process of open inquiry. She describes how the therapist's beliefs can limit the outcome and outlines the advantages of a therapist who has a spiritual practice and transpersonal awareness. Laurel's leading edge at this point involves Multidimensional Integrative Healing, an evolution from her longtime experience with EMDR, where further dimensions of reality have so often emerged in her work, and her own spiritual journey. It is fascinating to hear her describe how we can not only install helpful inner resources for ourselves, but also counter intergenerational trauma by calling forward ancestral wisdom. A deeply intriguing, eye opening, and impactful conversation with a very wise, enthusiastic, far thinking trailblazer of a teacher. On this episode of "Flourish or Fold" I'm thrilled to share with you a conversation that could very well change the way we perceive and treat trauma. I had the honor of sitting down with Dr. Eugene Lipov, a beacon of hope for those affected by trauma and a mastermind in innovative treatment methods. As the Chief Medical Officer at Stella and an international expert on trauma treatment, he has devoted his life and work to unraveling the complexities of trauma and exploring groundbreaking treatment options. The Impact of Trauma and the Path to Recovery: Trauma is an insidious beast that can leave deep scars on both the mind and body. Dr. Lipov, with his extensive experience in trauma treatment, shared invaluable insights into how trauma affects individuals and the potential for reversing PTSD symptoms. One of the most enlightening aspects of our discussion was the stellate ganglion block procedure, a treatment that offers a beacon of hope for those suffering from PTSD.Understanding Trauma: Genetics and Environment: Dr. Lipov emphasized the importance of recognizing the genetic and environmental factors contributing to trauma. As we delved into this topic, it became clear that to develop more effective therapeutic options, we must first understand these underlying causes. His role at Stella is pivotal in advancing research efforts focused on trauma treatment, and his dedication to this cause is nothing short of inspiring.Stellate Ganglion Block: A Ray of Hope: The stellate ganglion block procedure is a game-changer in rapidly treating PTSD symptoms. Dr. Lipov walked us through the assessment process, the procedure itself, and the critical aftercare recommendations, which include psychotherapy, yoga, meditation, and dietary considerations. The duration of the procedure and the potential long-term effects vary based on individual factors, but the promise it holds for improving overall health and longevity is remarkable.Addressing the Root Causes for Long-Term Healing: Our conversation also highlighted the pervasive impact of trauma on individuals and the collective human community. Dr. Lipov stressed the challenges individuals face in seeking relief from their suffering and the necessity of addressing the root causes of trauma-related illnesses for long-term healing and recovery.A Mission to Change Perceptions: From PTSD to PTSI: One of the most profound moments in our discussion was Dr. Lipov's mission to change the name of PTSD to post-traumatic stress injury (PTSI). This change aims to reduce stigma and improve acceptance of the condition. He shared the process of submitting a request to the American Psychiatric Association (APA) and the importance of recognizing the biological changes in the brain associated with trauma. The Mind-Body Connection and Advocacy: Dr. Lipov's insights into the mind-body connection, including the psychological effects of an adrenal tumor, underscored the importance of this relationship in trauma treatment. He encouraged listeners to participate in a letter-writing campaign to support the name change initiative, highlighting the significance of letters and social awareness in advocating for this cause.Personal Experiences and the Inheritance of Trauma: Dr. Lipov opened up about his personal experiences with trauma, including a near-fatal snorkeling accident and the loss of his mother to suicide. These experiences have fueled his resilience and determination to assist others on their healing journey. He also touched on epigenetics and the inheritance of trauma, shedding light on the interplay between genetic predisposition and environmental factors.Connecting with Dr. Lipov and Supporting PTSD Awareness: For those looking to connect with Dr. Lipov and access trauma treatment at Stella, he provided information on how to engage with his work, including his book "The Invisible Machine" and an upcoming fundraiser for PTSD awareness. He also mentioned a song release related to PTSD, inviting listeners to explore various channels to learn more and support the campaign to eliminate stigma associated with trauma. My Personal Reflections on Trauma and Advocacy: As a survivor of PTSD myself, I understand the importance of reducing the stigma associated with trauma. It's crucial to recognize the physiological response to trauma as an injury rather than a disorder. I encourage everyone to support themselves and others in seeking treatment and to advocate for the name change to post-traumatic stress injury. In closing, this episode was more than just a conversation; it was a journey through the heart of trauma and the innovative approaches to healing. I hope you find it as enlightening as I did, and I invite you to join us in this ongoing dialogue to foster resilience and recovery.Connect with Dr. Lipov: Dr. Lipov invites you to connect with him through his website and on social media. To learn more about Dr. Lipov's work and to sign his petition to change the name of post-traumatic stress disorder visit: https://dreugenelipov.com/https://stellacenter.com/eugene-lipov-mdhttps://www.instagram.com/dreugenelipov/ Here are some highlights of the episode to look forward to:Genetic and Environmental Impact (00:00:00): Discussion on the impact of genetic and environmental factors in passing down trauma.Introduction to Trauma Treatment (00:01:41): Introduction of Dr. Eugene Lipov, Chief Medical Officer at Stella, and discussion on trauma treatment.Current Therapeutics for Trauma (00:02:53): Challenges with current therapeutic options for trauma and the need for more effective treatments.Discovery of Stellate Ganglion Block Procedure (00:03:57): Dr. Lipov's discovery and research on the stellate ganglion block procedure for treating PTSD.Potential Impact on Aging (00:06:04): Exploration of potential reversal of PTSD symptoms and its impact on aging and overall health.Recognizing PTSD Symptoms (00:07:24): Discussion on recognizing and understanding the symptoms of PTSD in individuals.Trauma Experience and Treatment (00:09:54): Personal trauma experience and the potential for treatment through the stellate ganglion block procedure.Understanding Normality and Resilience (00:11:02): Discussion on the perception of normality and resilience in individuals affected by trauma.Threshold for Trauma Categorization (00:13:30): Exploration of the threshold for categorizing experiences as traumatic and the impact of genetics and experiences on trauma.Stellate Ganglion Block Procedure (00:19:32): Explanation of the stellate ganglion block procedure and the assessment process for treatment.Aftercare and Longevity of Treatment (00:21:54): Importance of aftercare and the potential longevity of the stellate ganglion block treatment.Changing the Name of PTSD (00:25:32): Dr. Lipov's mission to change the name of PTSD to post-traumatic stress injury, focusing on reducing stigma. The Mind-Body Connection (00:31:53): Discussion on the mind-body connection, the impact of trauma on the body, and the significance of treating PTSD.Experiences Shaping Trauma Treatment (00:34:35): Dr. Lipov's personal experiences, including a traumatic snorkeling incident and his mother's suicide, shaping his interest in trauma treatment.Epigenetics and Trauma Inheritance (00:43:52): Exploration of epigenetics, genetic inheritance of trauma, and multigenerational transmission of trauma.Connecting with Dr. Lipov (00:47:51): Information on how to connect with Dr. Lipov, access treatment at Stella Center, and support the campaign to eliminate trauma stigma. The stigma of trauma (00:51:51): Addressing the stigma of trauma, changing the name of PTSD to PTS injury, and normalizing physiological responses to trauma.Closing remarks and gratitude (00:53:17): Expressing gratitude to the audience, encouraging sharing of the episode, and signing off as the host.

Ep. 131 (Part 2 of 3) | World renowned EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing) therapy pioneer and trainer Dr. We head into a some particular aspects of some of what may be happening in families and relationships with those who are struggling with the wide variety of symptoms of PTSD and trauma.  These episodes are meant to help educate, encourage and guide anyone suffering from trauma, PTSD, CPTSD and/or any of the related sypmtoms that may be causing you difficulties in your life.  Gareth is a British Army veteran who served for 20 years, including 15 with the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards, and was frequently deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. The losses and difficult experiences, along with a history of a challenging environment growing up on a rough council estate in England, with a authoritative mother and a father with a fiery temper, eventually led to a diagnosis of PTSD for himself.  His own journey of trauma recovery led him to embrace Rapid Transformation Therapy and the hypnosis protocol from The Beat Retreat, and more. We delved into the fascinating realm of human emotions, trauma, and the intricate workings of the nervous system. Here's a brief summary and some key takeaways from our enlightening discussion:Summary:Dr. Julia Di Gangi shed light on the profound impact of uncertainty and emotional pain on the human psyche, drawing from her extensive experience working with trauma and neurodivergent individuals. She emphasised the importance of acknowledging and embracing uncertainty rather than avoiding it, as avoidance can perpetuate old patterns of behaviour. Moreover, she highlighted the connection between trauma and confusion, emphasising that trauma often stems from experiences of helplessness and confusion.Key Takeaways:Embracing Uncertainty: Rather than resisting uncertainty, it's essential to develop emotional intelligence and embrace the discomfort it brings.Trauma and Confusion: Trauma often arises from experiences of confusion and helplessness, which can leave a lasting impact on individuals.Somatic Leadership: Being attuned to bodily sensations and allowing emotional energy to flow through the nervous system is crucial for healing and transformation.Releasing Emotional Constipation: Avoiding or suppressing emotions can lead to emotional constipation, hindering personal growth and well-being. Today we get to connect with Alexander Zugheri, who believes we can all be active creators in our lifes and define our own reality. Alexander experienced the difficult trauma of back pain, and then surgery at a very young age that did NOT clear it. He was being told that he would 'have to learn to live with it' not only with that pain, but with a later diagnosis of OCD. He didn't accept one doctors prediction that he could get back to about 70% of normal, and instead found his way with hypnosis and more to now living at full capacity in his life! He shares his journey today in our chat. (And YES! He's clear of both issues in his life now!) Alexander is an Ericksonian hypnotist who is passionate about empowering his clients to reclaim their reality. From being labeled as mentally and physically 'broken' to using the power of 'active creation'  to completely transform himself, Alexander believes that we all have the power to live a life of health and happiness if we are audacious enough to leap in to the unknown in order to recreate ourselves.  You can connect with Alexander here:  Hypnotic Coaching And on his socials here: Hypnotic Coaching on YouTube Hypnotic Coaching on Instagram   And of course, I look forward to connecting more with you, as well!  Please come join me in The Change Gang Group! I LOVED talking with Darren Johnson on this episode today! He's so open and easy to relate to. If you've ever lost a job, you'll know the impact it can have, yet some might not understand that it can actually be rather traumatic. Having that happen in his life, it brought a realization that there may have been other things considered 'trauma' in his life that were affecting how he moved forward. He shares so honestly about his own earlier very traumatic experiences in his younger years,  such as losing him mom and a horrible experience of violence, and how the work he's doing for others now actually helped him heal from those difficult times in his life. Darren is from the UK and now living in Bulgaria with his busband and three dogs, and has been there for the last 7 years. His background was in SEO content, and finance, and because of his personal experience with anxiety, PTSD, trauma and more he has now trained and been certified in hypnotherapy.  You can find Darren at his website: Darren Johnson Hypnosis And you'll find him on his socials right here: Darren Johnson Facebook Darren Johnson LinkedIn   Please come join me in the Change Gang Group on Facebook!    Step into the vanguard of battlefield medicine with Dr. John M. Croushorn, an engineer-turned-emergency physician whose innovations are redefining trauma treatment. From his pivotal career switch of joining Army Medicine post-9/11 to creating the Abdominal Aortic Junctional Tourniquet (AAJT-S), this episode weaves together the personal and the technical, providing an intimate look at the challenges and triumphs of military medicine.   As we converse with Dr. Croushorn, you'll be transported to the front lines of tactical emergency medical solutions, where the origins of such practices in the military and law enforcement laid the groundwork for today's life-saving techniques. Discover the birth of the AAJT-S, spurred by tragedy and necessity, and how a chance encounter with a Special Forces Medic brought the device's development full circle. This narrative captures the essence of innovation — where creativity meets critical needs, and every step in the design process can mean the difference between life and death. The trenches of tactical medicine are filled with stories of lives saved and legacies forged, and each tale tightens the bond between trauma care advancements and those who stand ready at the front lines.   Dr. Croushorn continues to pull back the curtain on the dynamic field of military medicine, guiding us through the application of junctional tourniquets and their profound impact on saving lives in pre-hospital scenarios. We'll also cast an eye to the future, examining ongoing research and the global implications of these medical advancements. Hear tales of the AAJT-S's deployment in diverse environments, from the deserts of the Middle East to the conflict in Ukraine, and learn how this technology is not just a tool but a testament to human resilience and the relentless pursuit of advancing trauma treatment.   Chapters: (00:00) Military Medicine and Trauma Treatment Innovation (15:08) Developing Tactical Emergency Medical Solutions (21:26) Junctional Tourniquets for Hemorrhage Control (35:19) Junctional Tourniquet Application and Future Innovations (45:38) Physiologic Effects of a Cardiac Device   Chapter Summaries: (00:00) Military Medicine and Trauma Treatment Innovation Former Army Medical Corps officer shares journey from engineering to military medicine, including deployment experiences and innovative contributions.   (15:08) Developing Tactical Emergency Medical Solutions Tactical medicine's role in the FBI, development of the AAJT-S for pelvic bleeding, and a serendipitous encounter with a Special Forces Medic.   (21:26) Junctional Tourniquets for Hemorrhage Control Junctional tourniquets are crucial in trauma care, effectively controlling hemorrhage in extremity-torso junctions and surpassing other methods.   (35:19) Junctional Tourniquet Application and Future Innovations Versatile junctional tourniquet device for pediatric to 64-inch circumference patients, efficacy compared to REBOA, and use in trauma centers and NCTH.   (45:38) Physiologic Effects of a Cardiac Device Innovative application of the AAJT-S has shown impressive results in traumatic cardiac arrest scenarios, leading to protocol changes and ongoing studies in Ukraine.   Take Home Messages: The tragic events of 9/11 inspired a shift in career from electrical engineering to Military Medicine, highlighting the profound impact significant historical events can have on individual life choices. The development of the Abdominal Aortic Junctional Tourniquet (AAJT-S) marked a significant advancement in pre-hospital trauma care, particularly for severe hemorrhage control in areas where traditional tourniquets are ineffective. Innovation in military medical devices can stem from unexpected places, including the adaptation of materials like bike shop inner tubes, demonstrating resourcefulness in the face of challenges. Collaboration between medical professionals and those with hands-on battlefield experience, such as Special Forces Medics, is crucial for the practical development of life-saving medical technologies. Tactical emergency medical solutions, like the AAJT-S, have evolved to meet the specific needs of military and emergency response situations, including combat scenarios and disaster relief efforts. The versatility of junctional tourniquets makes them a critical tool not only for the military but also for civilian emergency services, as evidenced by their use by air ambulance services and fire departments. Emergency Medicine is continually advancing, with a focus on developing solutions for non-compressible torso hemorrhage, which presents new challenges in the field of trauma care. Groundbreaking research into the physiologic effects of medical devices in traumatic cardiac arrest scenarios is paving the way for updated emergency protocols and potentially higher survival rates. The global impact of military medical innovations can be seen in various international settings, including conflict zones like Ukraine, where they play a vital role in saving lives on the battlefield. Effective hemorrhage control, particularly in junctional areas, is essential for improving survival rates in trauma patients, emphasizing the importance of continuous innovation and application of medical devices in pre-hospital settings.   Episode Keywords: Military Medicine, Trauma Treatment, Emergency Medical Protocols, Abdominal Aortic Junctional Tourniquet, Tactical Medicine, Hemorrhage Control, Pre-hospital Setting, Medical Device Development, Special Forces Medic, Junctional Tourniquet, Extremities, Combat Gauze, Expandable Foams, Pediatric Patients, Non-compressible Torso Hemorrhage, Physiologic Effects, Traumatic Cardiac Arrest, Return of Spontaneous Circulation, Porcine Model, Emergency Protocols, Ukrainian Vascular Surgeon, Bakhmut Conflict, Military Medical Authorities   Hashtags: #wardocs #military #medicine #podcast #MilMed #MedEd #MilitaryMedicineInnovation #AbdominalAorticTourniquet #TacticalMedicineTech #TraumaCareBreakthroughs #LifesavingInventions Honoring the Legacy and Preserving the History of Military Medicine The WarDocs Mission is to honor the legacy, preserve the oral history, and showcase career opportunities, unique expeditionary experiences, and achievements of Military Medicine. Today we spoke with Dr. Helena Vissing about her new book Somatic Maternal Healing Psychodynamic and Somatic Trauma Treatment for Perinatal Mental Health (Routledge, 2023). What does the research of neuro science, immunology and biology tell us about the complex links between trauma, stress, inflammatory responses, and postpartum depression? What are the somatic counter transferences specific to the perinatal transition? What is the difference between empowered mothering and feminist mothering? What are the five tenets of empowered mothering? These are some of the questions we discuss with Dr. Vissing. All of them aimed at answering the larger clinical question, “What do you do with a new mother who walks into your office - how do we sit with new mothers and parents who are shaking to their core?”  Initially a school psychologist specializing in Developmental Psychology Play Therapy, Dr. Vissing was already interested in psychoanalytic or psychodynamic perspectives. When beginning her training in somatic approaches she was really excited to “learn a new modality to deepen my work in the maternal mental health specialization and specifically the transition to motherhood.” However, working in a “pretty big” community of somatic training practitioners Vissing was “a bit surprised and also a bit disappointed” to discover that there was not really a subgroup specifically dedicated to maternal mental health adaptations and that a “particular focus on the mother's perspective was missing.” Struck by this this lack Vissing became motivated and determined to “create a bridge between the two.” For Vissing the bridge is a biopsychosocial approach which is both a “clinical attitude” and a “guiding principle” that addresses the frustrations she encountered when studying maternal mental health felt like “jumping from one paradigm to the other where the paradigms were not connecting…were not communicating and I was frustrated by that because we know all of this interacts … we know that the enormous intensity of the hormonal shifts of the perinatal transitions will impact emotional health and mental health.” Dr. Vissing's hope is that by reading this book, “as a clinician you will feel less apprehension about the tender work of trauma healing in the perinatal period.” As hosts we both noted that Somatic Maternal Healing is a rigorously researched and clinically informed book. The majority of the citations reflect current findings, including research into pandemic stress and resonances in telehealth.  Golzar Selbe Naghshineh, is a training and supervising licensed Psychoanalyst with special expertise in reproductive and maternal mental health.
