For Eric, it's a normal day in his life in his neighborhood, but for the rest of the world, it's the day Eric faces the reality of taking his last breath. The film stars @stephenhillacts (Magnum P.I.) as Eric Garner. On July 17, 2014, Eric Garner, an African American man, was killed in the New York City borough of Staten Island by Daniel Pantaleo, a New York City Police Department (NYPD) officer, after the latter put him in a prohibited chokehold while arresting him.Video footage of the incident generated widespread national attention and raised questions about the use of force by law enforcement. In an interview with Flintside.com, Burton-Oare stated that "she recognized that this story was not just about Eric Garner, but also about Ramsey Orta who filmed Garner's deadly arrest. By giving him a place in her project, Burton-Oare aimed to highlight the interconnectedness of their lives and experiences."Executive produced by Shannon E. Riggs, the cast also includes Jason Galloza, Vince Fazio, Luke Leonard, Afrim Gjonbalaj, and Shanel Riley. The featured song in the film comes from Grammy Award winner Ishmael Butler, best known for his work with Digable Planets and Shabazz Palaces.Listen/Follow here: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/pbs-262-vote-for-breathe-for-2025-academy-awards-best/id1486119466?i=1000680273918

There must have been a magical elixir flowing from the drinking fountains at Seattle's Garfield High School. Alumni include Jimi Hendrix, Quincy Jones, Macklemore and our very special guest Ishmael Butler, rapper and founding member of Shabazz Palaces and Grammy Award winning hip-hop group Digable Planets.Host Rachel Belle first met Ish eight years ago, when she interviewed him at his house for a column called Show Us Your Fridge. So, it felt right to indulge in another round of culinary voyeurism and take a peek into the healthy home cook's refrigerator.Ish and Rachel discuss the Shabazz Palace song Chocolate Soufflé, so Seattle pastry chef Brittany Bardeleben joins the show to walk us through how to make the fussy French dessert, and opines on why you rarely see it on menus these days.Follow along on Instagram!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Musician, producer, sound engineer, and all-around creative force Erik Blood is known for a lot of things - one-half of Knife Knights alongside Ishmael Butler, his recent funkified sensual project Pink Lotion with Rachel Ferguson, Black Constellation all-star contributor, and a solo artist in his own right. Something you may have missed was his 2011 foray into music soundtracking which saw the multi-hyphenate write an album's worth of original music for the Brazilian film Center of Gravity. Without having even seen the movie, the haunting soundtrack Blood created tells a powerful story on its own, full of tender longing and heartwrenching aching. The description of the film describes it as dealing with, “universal questions about love and our expectations toward the beloved, the thin line that simultaneously divides and unites one another.” Our Song of the Day, “Or Am I Wrong?” expresses that extremely thin line as our narrator questions their ex's ability to move on while they're still so hopelessly entrenched in the memory of their shared past. Backed by a spaghetti-western-esque beat that pairs perfectly with our narrator's cinema-sized reimagining of past love, the song was made for the widescreen. With lyrics like “That place we were /Can we ever go back /This fear of me being phased out /Or instantly replaced is just so strong,” it's easy to imagine a montage of loving moments past or rain pouring down a protagonists head as they stare at their ex-love's window. For the full lowdown on Erik Blood, listen KEXP's episode on him for our Fresh Off the Spaceship podcast which delves into the boundless world of the Black Constellation. Porter Ray's career has been marked with great promise and potential. Anointed early on as the “golden child” of the Black Constellation, Porter's gifts as a rapper and storyteller skyrocketed him as one of the most exciting young artists to come out of Seattle when he first emerged on the scene. A decade on Porter's promise still shows no ceiling. On this final episode of Fresh off the Spaceship, Porter shares his story navigating grief, building toward his future, and using his music to build up his city. Like his Constellation peer Ishmael Butler, Porter has emerged as generational talent of the Central District. His work celebrates the neighborhood's under-heard stories and extends the wisdom bestowed upon him from those he's lost. From deferred NBA hoop dreams to the enlightenment of fatherhood, he's already gained a lifetime of wisdom – but he's not done yet. Following the break-up of Digable Planets and a return to Seattle, hip-hop visionary Ishmael Butler begins his rebirth with a new project called Shabazz Palaces. From selling handmade copies of his CD to local record stores to signing with Sub Pop and touring the world with the likes of Radiohead, Butler finds new life and sounds that inspire a new generation of rappers. In the second part of Butler's story, hosts Larry Mizell Jr. and Martin Douglas dig deep into his work as Shabazz Palaces and breakdown his lyricism, influence, and the familial bonds that stretch throughout the Black Constellation. Ishmael Butler is a renaissance artist who has lived many lives. You may know him from the Grammy-award winning hip-hop trio Digable Planets or the mysterious force behind the critically acclaimed Shabazz Palaces. But he doesn't just use his powers to innovate and reinvent himself – he spreads love and inspiration as a teacher and guide to his artistic family. In his art and lifting up the Black Constellation, he's helped put a beacon on Black art in Seattle. On this episode, we explore Ishmael's journey from the West Coast to the East Coast and back again. Through all his stylistic reinventions and his current artistic life as lynchpin of Shabazz Palaces, son of the Central District and under-heralded hip-hop visionary. Shabazz Palaces - "20 Gear Science," a 2021 self-released single. Seattle's Shabazz Palaces share "20 Gear Science," the first single from their forthcoming LP The Lost Vibes Of Shabazz: The Skrilla Scrolls, a collection of rarities and previously unreleased songs. True to their decade-long career, the song is a spacey, cinematic (or "sinematic", as their video production is called) journey of synths and swagger. Accompanying the track is a video filmed by Stephan Gray and Shabazz vocalist/producer Ishmael Butler. As they explain in the YouTube description, "While on vacation at their Baška hideaway retired Cantù basketball star Capricio "Prici" Drogba and his girlfriend Glo Moonlit must deal with the strange interloper that has appeared down by the pool." (Both Drogba and the pool boy are portrayed by Butler.) Read the full post on KEXP.org Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donate See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Experimental hip-hop artist Ishmael Butler hosts this edition of music life - he's a member of Shabazz Palaces, and was also part of Grammy-winning hip-hop pioneers Digable Planets. He’s also worked with the likes of Flying Lotus, Thundercat, and Animal Collective. He’s joined by IAMDDB, a songwriter and vocalist based in Manchester, UK, who is very much the artist in demand right now. Her performance of the song ‘ause on the music platform Colors has been viewed more than 16 million times, and her 2019 album ‘Swervvvvv.5’ made her a household name in the international community. Bishop Nehru is a young rapper and producer from New York. He has made two albums with elusive rap poet MF Doom, and worked with Dizzy Wright, 9th Wonder and Kaytranada. And KeiyaA is a singer, songwriter and producer from Chicago, now based in New York. She’s previously worked as a session musician for Noname, Chance The Rapper, Vic Mensa, and Mick Jenkins, and released her debut album Forever, Ya Girl earlier this year. On this episode, Matt and Brandon discuss the 2nd full length album from Shabazz Palaces, "Lese Majesty" (2014). The duo from Seattle includes members Ishmael Butler and Tendai "Baba" Maraire who have created a sound that has roots in hiphop but ventures much farther out. Their experimental sound is very much present on this album where there's lots of spacey electronic sounds and backdrops. Ishmael Butler who was formelry "Butterfly" in the 90s hip hop group, Digable Planets, has an incredible flow that rides along with the production creating one whole sound. Matt and Brandon discuss many of the topics that are discussed on this album including the meaning of the title, "Lese Majesty" which is defined as "an offense against the dignity of a reigning sovereign or against a state". Much of the lyrics are an offense against wack rappers who copy those before them with no originality. Shabazz Palaces prides themselves on having a unique sound that has no intention of reaching the masses. Brandon best describes the experience of listening to this album as he "felt weird" but once you get accustomed tot he sound, the magic of Shabazz Palaces is revealed. This week on the Talkhouse Podcast, we’re celebrating artists who take music in unexpected and brilliant new directions. Tuesday’s show saw Tierra Whack and Nnamdi Ogbonnaya in conversation; today, we bring you a fantastic deep dive between Avey Tare of Animal Collective and Ishmael “Ish” Butler, aka Palaceer Lazaro in Shabazz Palaces, fka Butterfly of Digable Planets. This convo takes in a lot: how seeing Animal Collective play live got Ish back into making his own records when he thought he was done with music; what artists they’re both vibing on rn; Ish’s goal to "elasticize minds" with his live shows; and the “secret sauce” that goes into writing Animal Collective and Shabazz Palaces songs.
