FYC FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION Campaign…BREATHE - BEST LIVE ACTION SHORT FILM…starring MAGNUM P.I.'s @stephenhillacts with music featured by GRAMMY Winner @shabazzpalaces …Exec Produced by @shantillylace of HBO's Heaven's Gate…during the 10th year anniversary of the killing of ERIC GARNER…Voting on the ACADEMY SCREENING ROOM begins DEC 9-13th 2024BREATHE is a short film narrative and short dramatic fantasy about the last day of Eric Garner's life. For Eric, it's a normal day in his life in his neighborhood, but for the rest of the world, it's the day Eric faces the reality of taking his last breath. The film stars @stephenhillacts (Magnum P.I.) as Eric Garner. On July 17, 2014, Eric Garner, an African American man, was killed in the New York City borough of Staten Island by Daniel Pantaleo, a New York City Police Department (NYPD) officer, after the latter put him in a prohibited chokehold while arresting him.Video footage of the incident generated widespread national attention and raised questions about the use of force by law enforcement. In an interview with Flintside.com, Burton-Oare stated that "she recognized that this story was not just about Eric Garner, but also about Ramsey Orta who filmed Garner's deadly arrest. By giving him a place in her project, Burton-Oare aimed to highlight the interconnectedness of their lives and experiences."Executive produced by Shannon E. Riggs, the cast also includes Jason Galloza, Vince Fazio, Luke Leonard, Afrim Gjonbalaj, and Shanel Riley. The featured song in the film comes from Grammy Award winner Ishmael Butler, best known for his work with Digable Planets and Shabazz Palaces.Listen/Follow here: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/pbs-262-vote-for-breathe-for-2025-academy-awards-best/id1486119466?i=1000680273918

Every year, we're going to spotlight a different category from the Academy Awards and discuss it in detail. This year we picked the live-action shorts. Most often, without knowing beforehand what the films are about, it's quite an adventure to be presented with five films from extremely different points of view. When a high-end design firm presents its plans to reimagine the gift shop at The Anne Frank House, the company's overt appeals to Generation Z sparks a darkly comic debate about collective trauma, the Holocaust and tote bags. THE ANNE FRANK GIFT SHOP, which stars Ari Graynor and Abbott Elementary's Chris Perfetti among other notable actors, imagines a meeting between the Anne Frank House and the New York design firm they've hired to help them appeal to young people. The idea for the film grew out of a disturbing study that revealed two-thirds of young Americans couldn't tell you how many Jews were killed in the Holocaust. Eleven percent of respondents somehow believe Jews "caused" the Holocaust. The film aims to combat that with humor, disarming young people before making its emotional appeal: We have to keep telling this story again and again and again or it will happen again. Journalist turned filmmaker Mickey Rapkin joins us to talk about the thrill of making the Oscar® shortlist for Live-Action Short (in a category with the likes of Almodovar, Wes Anderson and Alfonso Cuaron), how his a dark comedy has suddenly become very timely and striking the right balance of irreverent humor and the jarring reality of Anne Frank's actual life story. From writer and director, Alice Rohrwacher, and Academy Award® winning producer, Alfonso Cuarón, “Le Pupille” is a tale of innocence, greed and fantasy. This 2023 Oscar® nominated Live Action Short is about desires, pure and selfish, about freedom and devotion, and about the anarchy that is capable of flowering in the minds of girls within the confines of a strict religious boarding. Inspired by a letter Italian novelist Elsa Morante sent to her friend, LE PUPILLE is a magical fable about a group of mischievous young Catholic schoolgirls during an imaginary wartime. Unfolding over the Christmas holiday, the orphaned girls find themselves blessed with a scrumptious red cake from a generous countess and must evade Mother Superior's (Alba Rohrwacher) watchful eye for a taste of decadence. Alice Rohrwacher with her signature whimsical touch, crafts a joyously playful tale about childhood desire, greed and freedom. Director Alice Rohrwacher (The Wonders, Heavenly Body), joins us for a conversation on the challenge of finding the right tone and cadence for this beguiling tale, casting the “right” Serafina, working with her sister and her collaboration with her gifted collaborators. Le Pupille is available at: disneyplus.com

Talking about hard things is one of the benefits of writing. Utilize it. Be responsible with it. And note that my mistake with this story was not using “V.O.” and “O.S.” correctly. Remember that when on a phone call, use V.O. to indicate we don't see the person. Also note that O.S. should be used in film versus O.C., which is used in television. #LessonsInWriting --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

GUEST: Andy Vallentine's LGBT live-action short film THE LETTER MEN touching on forbidden love Director Andy Vallentine's THE LETTER MEN stars Garrett Clayton (NBC's Hairspray Live!) and Matthew Postlethwaite (Netflix' Peaky Blinders). This true story has been selected by Tribeca Film Festival, where it will receive its world premiere. THE LETTER MEN is based on the real love letters written by Gordon Bowsher to his sweetheart, Gilbert Bradley. Their love letters were exchanged between the years of 1938 and 1941 but were uncovered in 2017. Life as a homosexual at that time was incredibly difficult, gay activity was a court-martial offence, jail sentences for so-called "gross indecency" were common, and much of society strongly disapproved of same-sex relationships. Using the actual text of the letters, THE LETTER MEN transports us directly into the places of the letters and their hearts, battlefields, air raid shelters, and lost, golden moments.

Glitz, glamour, celebrity? Well yes, there’s all that at the 93rd Annual Academy Awards, but the reason we watch the Oscars is to celebrate the films of the previous year. And what a year 2020 was, so we need something to celebrate. Hear our predictions and thoughts on the winners live as the show plays out. Not a conventional episode for us, but we wanted to do something special for the long-delayed ceremony this year. So we worked out a way to stream and commentate, and record it all for your enjoyment. We’ve done our homework so this episode should sync with the ABC broadcast as available for replay on Hulu in the US and 7Plus in Australia. However at least in Australia, this will only be available for another week and a half or so. So if you want to watch along with the commentary, better check it out before it’s gone. Conversation from the commercial breaks has been shuffled around into dead spots in the broadcast where we were silently watching, but for the most part this is live reaction to the show. Including its unorthodox ending. To say any more would spoil the fun. On this week's episode, Mari and Jeff rave about Ted Lasso (again) and having televisions in your bedroom, why Godzilla v. Kong was fun yet terrible, how incredibly shitty Woody Allen is and always has been, and they break down the 2021 BAFTA winners. Plus - will controversy over the depiction of Amazon hurt Nomadland's chances at Best Picture? Does Amazon suck the life out of everything it touches?? Mari and Jeff also watched this year's incredible Live Action Short nominees and they break down each of them and discuss which one should win. (Huge plus that more than half of them shit on the police!!)

It's hard to believe but this is the first, and only, Oscar podcast I've done for this extended and wild Oscar season. I've guested on quite a few in recents months but had opted out of doing my own during this period. That ends today as I am joined by two young upstarts in the Oscar prediction community who've really blown up in the last couple of years: The Oscar Expert (Cole) and Brother Bro (Justin). I've had the pleasure of being a guest on their show twice and it was time I returned the favor. In this podcast, which was also recorded as a video (see below), the three of us go over what an exceptional year its been and we finally near the big finale of the 93rd Academy Awards. We address the last-minute frontrunner hit pieces that fell at Nomadland's feet, take on every single category in depth and make our cases in some of the tough categories like Best Actress, which I saved until just before Best Picture. You can find The Oscar Expert on his popular YouTube channel (here) where he and Brother Bro have dropped their final Oscar predictions, which were recorded before this podcast. You can also find them on Twitter @expert_oscar and @withbrotherbro. This podcast is sponsored by the Apple Original Film Wolfwalkers, Academy Award Nominee for Best Animated Feature. The Oscars are finally upon us after months of surprises and speculation. With the Academy Awards tomorrow night, we reveal our finalized predictions and analysis for all 24 categories, comparing on what we think WILL win, SHOULD win, and or COULD win. Will there be any upsets to the acting sweep? Will 1917's momentum prevail once again or will Parasite make history as the first foreign film Best Picture winner? There are many possibilities but there can only be one winner in the finale of awards season.Timestamps - Best Picture (1:27) Director (7:44) All Acting Categories (11:00) Original Screenplay (12:41) Adapted Screenplay (14:48) Cinematography (16:55) Costume Design (18:11) Film Editing (22:06) Make Up and Hairstyling (27:08) Production Design (28:40) Original Score (31:04) Original Song (33:00) Sound Editing (35:21) Sound Mixing (37:02) Visual Effects (40:02) Animated Feature (43:38) Documentary Feature (47:29) International Feature Film (50:18) Animated Short (51:52) Documentary Short (53:52) Live Action Short (55:24) Final Thoughts (58:49)
Today's episode of the podcast is Part 2 of our Oscar Week coverage! This week I have four-time Oscar nominee Marshall Curry and Siqi Song! Marshall was on the show last year for his documentary short "A Night at the Garden" that was nominated for an Oscar and it was great to have him back on the show. While this is Siqi Song's first Oscar nomination, she was also part of the art department for the Oscar nominated animated film "Missing Link". It was great to talk with Marshall about the new venture into Live Action Shorts instead of the Documentaries that he's best known for, and hear about how his film "The Neighbors Window" came together. Siqi's film "Sister" was her final student film project that tells such a unique story of the One Child Law in China. She used an incredible form of stop motion animation using yarn to build all of her characters. I had such a great time talking to both of these Oscar nominees and can't want to see what happens this Sunday during the 92nd Academy Awards. Make sure to visit ShortsTV on the site below to be able to watch all of the Oscar Nominated Shorts or find them in a theater near you. Thanks, Marshall and Siqi! Enjoy the episode.
Tonight I went to see the 2020 Oscar Live Action Shorts and on this episode I talk about them.
Short filmmaker Andrew Littlefield stops by to break down the Live Action Short nominees and discuss his new project, When the Clock Strikes. The first time that I saw The Wind Phone, I was simply blown away. It is a masterful work of art in every way. Set in Japan and subtitled in English, I assumed that this incredible film had been submitted to Film Invasion Los Angeles from a brilliant filmmaking team based in Tokyo that would not be able attend the festival and whom I would never meet. The film was submitted by an agency based in Berlin, so you can imagine my surprise when I found out that the film was made by a Los Angeles based team! Not only that, but when we screened the film in June 2019 the entire Japanese American cast joined writer/director Kristen Gerweck onstage for a wonderful Q&A. The Wind Phone, by the way, went on to receive SIX AWARDS from FILA 2019. Not too shabby. I had Kristen over for a podcast interview in August and we put it in the vault. Kristen had high hopes for the film's chances to compete for an Oscar and my hopes were nearly equal to hers. Every year I go watch the Live Action Short category of Oscar Nominees and every year I think of films that screened at Film Invasion L.A. and the Sherman Oaks Film Festival that deserved that honor. The Wind Phone is on that list in my head. And you know what? It might happen! Cross your fingers and your toes, because Kristen and her producer Linda Christina Riedmann (whose interview will get posted in week or so) let me know that The Wind Phone cleared the first hurdle and is eligible to make the Oscar's short list of ten live action short films that compete for the Best Live Action Short Oscar! So look... SPREAD THE WORD! Got friends in the Academy? Got friends who have friends in the Academy? Tell them to watch The Wind Phone. They will know how. It is really about the right people actually seeing the film, because if they see it then I have no doubt they will support it. But they have to take the time to see it. They have to now that this one is special. Ok. That was a lot of rambling. Maybe you should just listen to my interview with Kristen which is about how she became a filmmaker via law school, the film that she made before The Wind Phone, and more.

Jeremy sits down with former EW journalist and current HBO writer Jeff Jensen to discuss recent developments concerning the slighting of cinematography and other categories from the upcoming 2019 Oscars telecast.
There are some major changes coming to the very next Oscars ceremony...and they're not good. Yesterday, the Academy, in a bombshell announcement, revealed that they would be creating a new category: Outstanding Achievement in Popular Film. After yet another year of dropping ratings, this attempt to secure viewership from audiences that have shelled out their money to the year’s blockbusters like Black Panther, Mission: Impossible Fallout and Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again, can be assured that ‘popular’ will now equal ‘best.’ The Board of Governors have also committed to a 3-hour telecast. Even though ad rates for the Oscars are still among the highest in television, the length of the Academy Awards has always been the butt of jokes, often by the host themselves. One of the ways the show intends to shorten the running time won’t be asking winners to make quicker speeches but to move some categories to commercial breaks. Other awards shows implement this already, like the Tonys or the the MTV Movie Awards, and it’s likely that categories such as Live Action Short (and its kind) will be moved there. The third big change won’t involve next year’s Oscars but the 92nd Academy Awards. They’re moving up from their previously announced date of February 23rd to February 9th. That is going to result in a seismic shift in every other awards show, nomination date and give pause for every studio in how they dole out their fall and winter releases. In this podcast, I am joined by returning guest Daniel Joyaux, freelance film writer (The Verge, Vanity Fair, Moviemaker magazine and more) and publications editor for the Sundance Film Festival. We discuss in enraged detail each of these changes (and the real reason behind them), whether they'll be able to withstand the barrage of hate they received on social media and I posit a way that maybe, just maybe this new category nonsense might actually work the way they want it to. This podcast runs 1h 29m

In 2014, filmmaker Scott Cummings temporarily relocated back to his hometown of Buffalo, NY and befriended the local Juggalo Community. Over several months, he collaborated with them to produce an experimental portrait film, "Buffalo Juggalos," which won the Grand Jury Prize for Live Action Short at the 2014 AFI Fest. Leading up to my own visit to the Juggalo March on Washington this weekend, I invited Cummings to stop by, recount his story of collaborating with his Juggalo friends, and talk about a couple of new movie projects he’s got in the works including an experimental portrait of the Church of Satan. This week’s bonus episode is sponsored by lots of different genres of clowns. If you’re at the march this weekend, let me know!
