It has a life of its own. It shouldn't be kept behind glass. It should be out in front of people. With that emotion passing through.- Jack Barton The biggest bummer about it these days is just how everybody's got a super computer in their pocket, and everybody's addicted to the shit, and unless you engage with social media, people don't know that you're active. - Sam Grisman I never imagined myself becoming a guitarist ever. I never had big aspirations to be a musician or play guitar at all. But I started playing during the pandemic. - Bella Rayne Honestly, I was thrilled to play with all of these musicians, but I have a special place in my heart for the guys from Los Lobos. Yeah. I mean, holy cow. What a thrill. - Jill Simmons From the beginning, I'm grateful. That we've been able to do what we've wanted to do all these years. And for it to come around to where it's at now. And the friends that we've made along the way. After a hiatus following a brief Season Two, we're back in business on RFUS with Jack Barton! It was a privilege and an honor to speak with one of the true mavens of the AAA format, who comes at the industry from basically all sides (although I forgot to ask if he's ever played in a band!). Like so many affected by what Little Steven calls the Big Bang of Rock'n'Roll (The Beatles on Ed Sullivan), he got into radio in college which led to a career working in radio and retail in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and New York. He then returned to Philly to cover the industry for FMQB and in recent years has expanded his own business into the realm of not only format charts and news and summits, but artist management, consulting, and Dark Star Orchestra merchandise. He's seen over 300 Grateful Dead shows, so we asked about some of his best Deadhead memories, a Dead connection he has with Charlottesville radio and even some advice for his beloved Sixers heading into the NBA offseason.

Hi #smartcommunity friends! Welcome back to the Summer Series here on the Smart Community Podcast. As a reminder, we're taking a little break from new content over the Australian summer holidays, and instead we are sharing the replays of a few of your all time favourite episodes. This week we're sharing my interview with architect Jack Barton, from way back in Episode 83. This episode was right at the end of 2018, soon after we'd shifted from Smart City Podcast to the Smart Community podcast.Jack is the Outreach Manager at the GeoSpatial Research Innovation and Development Lab at the University of NSW. He was also running his private practice Jack Barton Digital Design (JBDD).Jack and I have a great discussion about how his upbringing in a regional area, his interest in cities, and his love of digital technology all combined to spark his interest in the Smart space. We talk about why Smart Cities is a good buzz word, and the reasons connections and communication are important in Smart Communities. Jack shares his view on how Australia is embracing Smart concepts, and why long term vision is important, especially during this age of experimental pilot programs. We cover Smart City Standards and what they mean for people working in the space; the importance of digital and spatial literacy, and the need for more people to properly understand data so that they can use is effectively. We discuss how open data can facilitate better integration across disciplines, governments and industry, and finish our conversation on the emerging trends of boring and somewhat old-fashioned things like protocols, accountability, transparency, governance and longevity. We'll be sure to get Jack back on the show in the future for a full update about what he's been up to and also how our thinking has progressed since 2018. But in the meantime, we hope you enjoy listening to this episode as much as we enjoyed making it!As always, I hope you enjoy listening to this episode as much as I enjoyed making it.Find the full show notes at: www.mysmart.communityConnect with Jack via Twitter @jbdd, on LinkedIn or visit the website jbdd.comConnect with me via email: hello@mysmart.communityConnect with My Smart Community via LinkedIn or Twitter and watch on YouTubeThe Smart Community Podcast is produced by Perk Digital.
In this episode, Jack Barton, who works in construction and is also a CrossFit Coach shares his experience of surgery and recovery. After his back injury impacted on the movements he could make and he took the decision to have Microdiscectomy surgery to resolve the issue. He discusses the process leading up to the decision and the surgery along with what it was like in the 6 week initial recovery period and beyond. This is a good opportunity to hear from someone who has been through a surgery, undertaken the rehabilitation and returned to an exercise regime successfully. KEY TAKEAWAYS CrossFit is functional based training and includes weights, gymnastics and metabolic conditioning so the movements are varied I tried physio and went through 2 rounds of injections which had little impact and were uncomfortable before deciding on surgery. It was challenging to accept the need to have surgery and know that as an active person I would have to go through a 6-week recovery period with a restricted exercise regime. The course of physio was based on stretches and as a fit person, I was able to successfully move through the recovery sequence fairly quickly. My biggest fear when I started to exercise again was that there would be a relapse. I took things slowly and benefitted because I was healthy and had a high level of fitness, I also understood my body and knew how to move. I'm 85% better than I was and if I could adhere daily to the stretching and other exercises I would be even better. Good body awareness makes a huge difference along with understanding how to move and stretch your body. If you are considering surgery you need to understand that the better you go into surgery the better you will come out of it. BEST MOMENTS ‘I knew the difference between gym aches and pains and pain or an ache that is an indicator of something to worry about' ‘You don't have to stop doing exercise you just have to vary what you are doing' ‘You have to go into surgery as strong as you can' VALUABLE RESOURCES The Back Pain Podcast Free Sciatica guide: www.thebackpainpodcast.com ABOUT THE HOSTS Dave Elliot Dave is the owner of Advanced Chiropractic, a chain of Chiropractic and massage therapy clinics in Essex, UK. “Worry the bottle mama it’s grapefruit wine” “This week on N2M we dive into that world of FM…the terrestrial world filled with extra terrestrial personalities. I talk with Jack Barton who is the Vice President for Triple A at the FMQB charts. Friday Morning Quarterback (better known as FMQB) is a trade magazine which covers the Radio and Music industries in the United States. Its coverage includes programming, management, promotion, marketing, and airplay for music formatted radio. I gave Jack a ring on my smart computation machine and we have a conversation about the state of radio, corporate and independent as well as the history and future for FMQB and specifically Triple A. So sit back buckle up, open that freshly purchased bag of fried football otherwise known as Cracklins listen close you may learn something on this weeks episode of Nashville to Memphis. Now that we know “I’ve bent backwards, I’ll be damned if I’ll bend over.” check out the FMQB charts at http://fmqb.name/triple-a-home/ Opening quotes form the 1978 movie FM theme song by Steely Dan and the closing quote from the same movie starring Martin Mull. This one you are going to have to buy to watch but you should do it. https://www.amazon.com/Fm-Michael-Brandon/dp/B01HGA26AS/ref=sr_1_1?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1514658980&sr=1-1&keywords=FM
