POPULARITY
This week in sport: misguided enthusiasm in the group chat, the big two-v-three, who is Rick Rickleton, prioritising that money, prioritising not getting blowed up, win the stink win the match, all star game narratives, the clot thickens, no future is promised, figuring it out, around the grounds, Jacques Kallis strays, Kyrie talking nonsense, Australian archetypes, white mascots, Trez in residence, flipping off Amazon, timing your three months of good health, BANE, big-offs, Steph + Jimmy, two suns, some badly aged preview chat for the Dubs’ stomping of the KANGZ, pair of V’s, not mnemonic worthy, losing live, DPOY odds and Courtney-Love crashouts. One of one mania including a beautiful 1/1 Jacques Kallis (and that one of one Wemby ruined with his toddler scribbles), an update on the challenge Ben and Leigh set each other, a deep dive on Stan Collymore and more.
Shaun and Thala review round 12 of the URC which saw all 4 South African teams win their matches. We first look at the Stormers victory over Edinburgh and Shaun (who watched live) raved about how good Damian Willemse looks live and the encouraging signs from Wandi Simelane's performance. For the Sharks game, Thala discusses whether the Sharks have finally found the right formula of Boks and youngsters in their team, how impressive Ethan Hooker is and why Makazole Mapimpi is a South African rugby legend. We rave about the Lions being the first South African team to beat Connacht away in the URC and them doing it after an early red card to Asenathi Ntlabakanye. We talk about impressive performances from JC Pretorius and Erich Cronje. We look forward to the Lions other matches and why they have a good chance of qualifying for the knockouts. We cannot help but look forward to the Bulls epic upcoming clash with Leinster after the dispatched the Dragons with a bonus point. The First Phase question today was what players have teams still not replaced and there was a lot of love for Jerome Kaino, Israel Folau and Jacques Kallis??
Join Boks Office host Hanyani Shimange as he sits down with Springbok legends Schalk Burger and Robbie Fleck as they review the final weekend of Guinness Men's Six Nations action. The boys discuss whether Jacques Kallis and AB de Villiers would have made good rugby players, the epic test match between France and England and whether Ireland are the best team in the world - this is an episode you won't want to miss! One final Test match to round out the summer! Christchurch is the scene and Andrew Ramsey is there and he gives Josh Schonafinger the lowdown on what to expect at Hagley Oval. Mitch Starc needs two poles to go past Dennis Lillee while Kane Williamson and Tim Southee will line up in their 100th matches apiece. TRIVIA ANSWERSThe only bowlers in Test cricket with a better strike rate than Mitch Starc's 48.62 are:Dale Steyn (42.38), Malcolm Marshall (46.76) and … Waqar Younis (43.49)! In terms of players playing their 100th Tests together, it's far more common than we assumed! Mike Atherton and Alex Stewart did so in 2000, Shaun Pollock, Jacques Kallis and Stephen Fleming did in the same match in 2006, and Michael Clarke and Alastair Cook also reached 100 in the Perth Test of 2013-14! Well done if you knew any of those! This episode brought to you by Qantas, the Spirit of Australia. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
There was once a kerfuffle about whether to name a grandstand at Newlands after Kallis. In their infinite wisdom the Western Province Cricket Association board decided not to, which is a little like failing to name a spacesuit after Neil Armstrong, or an auditorium after Louie. The cricket-loving public of the Western Cape have long since got used to such japes by the Western Province board. They just shrug their shoulders and walk away. With his heavy bat, Klusener hit thousands and thousands of balls in the 1999 World Cup in England. He was trying to achieve many things with this ritual, but mainly to groove his muscle memory and calm his nerves. ‘I needed to know how hard to hit it to get over the ropes – how much to get on it to get it to where it needed to go,' he says. Sometimes he would obsessively repeat the ritual time and time again, but at other times it would feel so good there would be no need and he wouldn't want to break the spell he was in. ‘If I was in the zone and hitting well, I could be hitting with Fordie and he'd throw me five and everything would be great. He'd just look at me and we'd pack up because we knew that everything was perfect. Sometimes I'd opt out of those optional practices because I was in good shape. If I was in a good space I just wanted to stay in it.' The rest of the team was in a similarly good space. They were more experienced than the 1996 side, more streetwise and as well, if not better, prepared, having stressed that they were out to enjoy themselves at a pre-tournament camp in Swellendam. They certainly came into the tournament against a backdrop of significant wins at a variety of venues in the preceding seasons. They had won the Wills Golden Jubilee Tournament in Pakistan in 1997; won gold in the 1998 Commonwealth Games, beating a strong Australian side in the final; and won the inaugural ICC Knock Out Tournament (now the Champions Trophy), beating the West Indies in Bangladesh in the final, Jacques Kallis scoring a match-winning century. Klusener sums up the prevailing atmosphere pithily: ‘We pretty much had all the boxes ticked – we went in [to the World Cup] really believing we could do it.' His was a widely held view.Donate to The Luke Alfred Show on Patreon.Get full written episodes of the show a day early on Substack.Check out The Luke Alfred Show on YouTube and Facebook.

Host Carl Lewis chats with the sports editor at the Rapport, Tinus van Staden, about why South Africa plays such little test cricket and the factors behind this shift in global cricket. If Gerald Coetzee - the Proteas' new star bowler - plays 50 tests, he will take 450 wickets, a Protea supporter recently wrote on Twitter. "We will have to manage him well if he wants to have a career of 25 years," someone snaps back. Tongue-in-cheek, of course. Very hyperbolic. Nobody expects Cricket South Africa to manage any player well! But on a serious note: Due to the stepchild status that Test cricket enjoys these days, a quarter-century career is about what it takes for a player to amass significant Test figures (albeit 450 wickets in 50 Tests – nine per Test! – practically impossible). The 22-year-old Coetzee will never achieve superstar statistics. It's not his fault. He has a truckload of talent - a fast bowler with speed, aggression, natural swing and sustainable bowling action. The problem is South Africa no longer plays enough Tests for Coetzee to stand a chance of equaling Dale Steyn's record of 439 Test wickets (in 93 Tests over 15 years). Even the 27-year-old Kagiso Rabada (who has already taken 280 wickets in 60 Tests) may never reach Steyn's figures. And this is a greater injustice because Rabada has the potential to become the country's best yet. In the next four-year cycle - from May 2023 to April 2027 - South Africa will only play in 28 Tests. Only in 2026 again in a series of more than two tests, when England comes here for three matches. Test famine compared to the red-ball festivities that await the Big Three: 43 for England, 40 for Australia and 38 for India. Five-Test series between these countries abound.

Moving across the Tasman, Baldy is all smiles after a strong start by Australia, as consecutive 62-ball hundreds from Steve Smith, excellent tactics and contributions everywhere have put India firmly on the back foot.
