Some said that the killer couldn't be a local. Others claimed that he was the wealthy son of a prominent Morgantown family. Whispers spread that Mared and Karen were sacrificed by a satanic cult or had been victims of a madman poised to strike again. Then the handwritten letters began to arrive: "You will locate the bodies of the girls covered over with brush--look carefully. The animals are now on the move." Investigators didn't find too few suspects--they had far too many. There was the campus janitor with a fur fetish, the "harmless" deliveryman who beat a woman nearly to death, the nursing home orderly with the bloody broomstick and the bouncer with the "girlish" laugh who threatened to cut off people's heads. Local authors Geoffrey C. Fuller and S. James McLaughlin tell the complete story of the murders for the first time. Geoffrey C. Fuller has written for literary and commercial magazines and contributed to twenty-five fiction and nonfiction books. He is the author of the novel Full Bone Moon and the true crime books Pretty Little Killers and The Savage Murder of Skylar Neese (a New York Times bestseller). S. Millions of people around the country have already cast a ballot in this year's election. With competitive races for President and for U.S. Senate, Maryland voters are expected to turnout in high numbers. The 2020 election, which put President Joe Biden into office, saw 66% participation. Two years later, in the 2022 midterms, only 46% of eligible voters cast ballots. But besides low turnout, recent election suffered from a lack of poll workers. And with early voting in Maryland beginning in 10 days, election officials are continuing to call for more residents to get involved in the election process. Marylanders working to ensure a secure and fair election join Midday today. They are organizing to get as many people as possible to cast votes, and they are getting young people involved in the electoral process. Jared DeMarinis is Maryland's State Administrator of Elections. We ask him about overseeing the state's election at a time of heightened paranoia and fearmongering around electoral integrity. Then, we talk to Sam Novey, Co-Founder of Baltimore Votes Coalition. He is working to get more people involved in the election process, including young people. High school students Aleni Lila and James McLaughlin are new election judges participating in the upcoming election. Maryland residents can register to vote at the polls during early voting and on Election Day. The deadline to register to vote online is Oct. 15 by 11:59 p.m. By mail, registration must be postmarked by 5:00 p.m. local time on Oct. 15. Early voting starts on Oct. 24 and runs through Oct 31, where voters can cast their ballots at any specified early voting center in their county. The final day for voters to cast their ballots in-person is on Election Day, Nov 5. In The Psychoanalytic Ear and the Sociological Eye: Toward an American Independent Tradition (Routledge 2020) Professor Nancy J. Chodorow gives name and shape to an American middle group between the ego psychological and interpersonal approaches: The American Independent Tradition or intersubjective ego psychology. Through her careful exegesis of theoreticians like Hans Loewald, Erik Erikson and her contemporaries Warren Poland and James McLaughlin she is able to distill an analytic attitude in which the patient’s individuality takes front and center. We get a measured account of how her thinking about the American Independent Tradition evolved over the last two decades, about its "Americanness" and about a powerful approach to technique in which the patient becomes a centred unit by being centred upon. Turning outward from the consulting room, the in-depth study of psychoanalytic theory is framed by a focus on a larger context, the connection between individuality and society. Chodorow advocates for a return to an interest in the social and social sciences in psychoanalytic thinking. At the same time, she rues the lack of attention within the social sciences to the serious study of individuals and individuality. Through her careful exegesis of theoreticians like Hans Loewald, Erik Erikson and her contemporaries Warren Poland and James McLaughlin she is able to distill an analytic attitude in which the patient's individuality takes front and center. SMA stands for Self Mutilators Anonymous, a 12-step program designed to help those who turn to self harm (NSSI, non-suicidal self injury) as a coping mechanism and consider it an addiction. This week we bring you into a meeting to hear 5 different "qualifications" of SMA members. A qualification is essentially a brief history of their lives and how they got to SMA. We hope you listen with intent and compassion, millions of people in the United States use 12-step programs to cope with a variety of struggles but this SMA meeting is 1 of only 3 in the country (1 in New York, 2 in California) despite the program being started by James McLaughlin and Shelly in 1986. They're also the only self harm support group that we know of in the world. SB Weekly - the sport business podcast

James McLaughlin, the agent of cricketer Jonathan Trott and commercial brains behind new football agency 73 Management, is the feature interview on this week's SB Weekly. James has held a number of senior roles in sport since the '90s, first as Head of Sales at Southampton Football Club. He followed that with a stint at Nike and two lengthy periods as Commercial Director of both Watford Football Club and Warwickshire County Cricket Club. In 2012 he was asked by then World Cricketer of the Year Trott to become his agent and, this August, launched 73 - which describes itself as “a new football management service - designed by footballers, for footballers” - alongside former Southampton players Matt Le Tissier and Francis Benali. In this week's episode, hear James discuss: Why 73 is focusing on managing a footballer's career, rather than simply commercial exploitation Jonathan Trott's recent autobiography - and why now was the right time to release it The challenge he faced in 2013 being in the UK when Trott returned home from the Ashes in Australia Signing Jaguar as the £30m hospitality naming rights partner of Edgbaston - the proudest commercial deal of his career How cricketers tend to understand the value of commercial partnerships more than footballers Why football clubs could, and should, look more long-term in their sponsorship selection.

Securing online identities is a hot topic. Gemalto and Microsoft Corp. have partnered to bring a product to market combing smart cards with cryptography to enhance privacy and trust. Gemalto's James McLaughlin discusses the partnership with Microsoft and how it may change the way people identify themselves online. "It allows a person a way to present the claims about themselves to someone else or something else, a service for instance, and do that in a way that's secure and allows them to control how much information is sent to that service or to that person," McLaughlin says.
