As the IoT ecosystem continues to grow, so does the importance of securing those IoT networks. According to Gartner, spending on IoT security solutions will reach $631 million. This is a significant leap from $91 million, which was spent in 2016, and this annual global spending statistic shows that IoT solutions are headed for a massive boom within the next decade.According to Gemalto, another worrying stat, 48% of businesses admit that they cannot detect IoT security breaches on their network. Nearly half of the companies that use IoT can't identify when their network is compromised. Let's Talk About Digital Identity with Petteri Ihalainen, Senior Specialist at the National Cyber Security Centre, Finland (part of Traficom - Finnish Transport and Communications Agency). In episode 33, Oscar's on home turf talking to Petteri Ihalainen about the identity landscape in Finland and all about the Finnish Trust Network (FTN) – what it is, why it came about and what the benefits are for Finland's population. Paul Bradley, Head of 5G Strategy and Partnerships for Gemalto, joined Chip Chat at MWC 2018. Gemalto creates a fabric of trust across the digital economy, protecting individuals, institutions and data. Bradley emphasized the need for greater awareness and industry collaboration around 5G security requirements. Operators are understandably focused on interoperability, spectrum acquisition and go-to-market planning. With major technology changes, it will be critically important to maintain trust through vigorous privacy, data protection and regulatory compliance investments. Not just a new radio technology, 5G will drive new areas of digital transformation for Gemalto customers across government, banking, mobile and IoT and enterprises as well as the horizontal cybersecurity industry. Communication service providers (CoSPs) will become more than conduits of information, instead storing data at edge and core of the network, analyzing that data and triggering automated actions based on the data. CoSPs need to physically and logically secure data wherever it will be stored within the 5G system. In increasingly virtualized data and voice communication networks, Gemalto is delivering robust processor-level cybersecurity solutions. The Internet of Things (IoT) will bring us a tsunami of network-enabled devices, for consumer use as well as yet to be imagined industrial and commercial applications. Many of these devices will be payment enabled, many using card payment rails. Securing those billions of IoT devices is going to require techniques deployed by the mobile industry, the card industry, and other sectors. Cryptographic hardware will be part of the solution. The answers, of course, will include multiple methods and modes, all chosen based on risk and cost. Gemalto's response was less than reassuring. Netflix have announced their Australian launch date - March 24! Federal Government politicians were available for a chat briefly this week, after it was discovered that a number of them use their publicly available parliamentary emails on the Apple messaging service. The encrypted messaging service Wickr appears to be the app of choice for many who want to keep their comms private - not least Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull. Mike's Games Wrap: The Interactive Games and Entertainment Association have released the results of their study into games sales in 2014 - a total increase of 20 percent. For developers, Epic have announced that the new Unreal Engine 4 will be free, and Unity have announced that Unity 5 will be too. Surprise Attack have been releaseing some cool indie games lately. The revised draft of FIPS 201-2 was released and includes quite a few changes. Additional contactless functionality, new biometrics and mobile abilities are all proposed to be included in future generations of the government credential. Neville Pattinson, senior vice president of Government Sales at Gemalto Inc., talks about these changes and some concerns he has about deploying new credentials and an infrastructure to support them.
Securing online identities is a hot topic. Gemalto and Microsoft Corp. have partnered to bring a product to market combing smart cards with cryptography to enhance privacy and trust. Gemalto's James McLaughlin discusses the partnership with Microsoft and how it may change the way people identify themselves online. "It allows a person a way to present the claims about themselves to someone else or something else, a service for instance, and do that in a way that's secure and allows them to control how much information is sent to that service or to that person," McLaughlin says.
