Jayneen Sanders is a mum of three, author and educator. Her childrens' books teach kids about body boundaries, respect, consent, body safety, feelings and emotions. It's every parents' worst nightmare to think of something happening to their kid. But Jayneen's work seeks to empower kids to become the boss of their bodies and teach parents how they can model respectful behaviour and boundaries at home. In this important conversation, Steph asks Jayneen about the importance of calling ‘private parts' by their proper names, what age to start these conversations with kids, and the skills Jayneen teaches kids including creating a list of trusted adults that they can come to in case anything happens. Last week we spoke with Eli Harwood, the Attachment Nerd, about sexual abuse. This week we are speaking with Jayneen Sanders, an author and publisher, of books designed to help families and educators address the issue of abuse. In today's episode we talk about everything from body safety and the words to use when addressing our children and asking for permission. I love when Jayneen said this, “How would you like me to greet you today?” What a powerful way to give a child ownership. We talk about respect for self and others, her amazing new book called Included, and how her daughter, Isabel's experiences with a boy named Luca have helped to shape much of her forward motion within the special needs community. There is a lot of hope in this world and we, as parents, set the stage for what is and what isn't accepted in our homes and schools. I hope you take away some phrases that will help you to change our world.I hope you enjoy and let me know what you think. We love to hear from you. Mia has had a visual safety network since she was 3 years old and is a huge advocate of every child having one. In this episode, we talk about what a safety network is, good people to have in your network and how to make a visual drawing to help you remember there are trusted adults available for you.
'¡No significa no!' What's your most awkward parenting moment? Perhaps you were out to dinner when your toddler decided it was a good time to play with themselves. Adults can find it uncomfortable when our children start to explore their bodies, but Vanessa Hamilton says it's all developmentally appropriate. Vanessa is the Founder of Talking the Talk Healthy Sexuality Education. Vanessa explains why kids play with themselves and how parents can handle their own emotional response. In this episode Vanessa talks about the five body safety tips that can be found on Jayneen Sanders website Educate2Empower. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In the 8th episode, hosts Dr. Meghna and Devishobha talk about why inculcating the gender equality mindset in our even young kids is important. The hosts discuss why feminism is a ‘dirty' word, that is, why people find this term problematic. They discuss what feminism actually means and how people's views are shaped by their own encounters with patriarchy. Devishobha discusses a touching story about a chess grandmaster and his mother. And Meghna discusses why we even need feminism! The hosts then discuss both blatant and subtle ways in which patriarchy impacts us all, and argue why it's important to instill the values considered feminine in our boys. In Episode 8, the hosts discuss why it's not enough to raise our daughters like our sons, it's equally important to raise our sons like our daughters. The hosts share their guidelines for raising feminist kids: FEMINN F= Fight stereotypes (including your own), E= Encourage kids to express emotions, M= Model gender equality by giving girls and boys strong role-models, I= Involve girls and boys in caring for themselves and for others, N= No to traditional differences, N= No means No- teaching consent to kids.If you wish to learn more, check out:The Guilty Feminist Podcast: https://guiltyfeminist.com/Books on Feminism for adultsWe should all be FeministsDear Ijeawele or A Feminist Manifesto in Fifteen Suggestions Both by Chimamanda Ngozi AdichieAdichie's website https://www.chimamanda.com/welcome/How to Be a Woman by Caitlin MoranBooks that reinforce gender equality for childrenPink and Blue by Rity Vaishnav (3-6 years)No Difference Between Us by Jayneen Sanders (4-7 years)Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls by Elena Favilli (7+ years)Boys will be Boys by Aparna Jain (7+ years)Newsletter- Boyish- monthly newsletter by Rajat Mittal brings forth stories of Indian men who have defied gender stereotypes to excel in traditional non-masculine careers https://boyish.in/Tune in to Big Talk About Tiny Humans every Wednesday for new episodes! In this weeks episode of The Playful Psychologist, I had the pleasure of interviewing Jayneen Sanders, who is the author of SO many of the gorgeous books on my IG feed including her brand new series for kids aged 2-6, Little Big Chats. It was truly fascinating to hear about the inspiration behind Jayneen's books and I hope her story inspires you guys,In this interview, Jayneen answers the following questions:I genuinely love your storylines and have used them so often in my therapy sessions. Where do you draw inspiration for your books? Some of your books touch on some really complex topics such as family violence. How do you manage to adapt these complexities into language that young children can resonate with?I understand that you wear a lot of hats, a being an educator, author, and most importantly, a mum of three! How do these three roles help guide your writing?I saw on your website that a question you asked yourself was ‘what are we doing in schools to empower children and protect them from inappropriate touch?' Can you tell us a little about your experiences and what lead you to ask these questions?Jayneen's passion is all about 'protecting your child by educating yourself' and I just love the strong message each of her books has. In this episode we're tackling the important issue of teaching our kids about consent. How do we ensure our younger children know about and understand consent? It's not always easy having these conversations with our kids, but it's absolutely necessary. Parents are asking at what age should this conversation happen, how should it be introduced? How should we actually be talking about it? The good news is you can start teaching kids about consent from a very young age, without confronting discussions about rape or sexual violation.Talking us through this topic is award winning author, educator and advocate, Jayneen Sanders. Jayneen has actively advocated for body safety, gender equality and respectful relationship education being taught both in homes and in schools for over twelve years and has written and published several books on consent for children and parents including; ‘No Means No', ‘My Body! What I Say Goes!', ‘Some Secrets Should Never Be Kept', ‘ABC of Body Safety & Consent', ‘Let's Talk About Body Boundaries, Consent & Respect', and ‘Body Safety Education, A Parent's Guide to Protecting Kids from Sexual Abuse'. Most of these books are suitable for children aged 3-9 years and give parents, carers, and educators the tools and framework to have conversations in age-appropriate ways with the children in their lives to educate and empower them.In this episode we cover topics including: How and when to introduce the concept consent to young kids without relating it to sexPractical ways to model consent to childrenWhy kids should never be asked to keep secretsThe importance of teaching anatomically correct terminology for body parts Broaching sex ed with kidsCONTENT WARNING: In this episode, themes and references to sexual abuse and rape are covered. This year we are all talking about consent. Parents are worried that their teenagers are struggling with what it means. Do boys respect girls when they say 'no'? Do girls understand their own right to say no? Jayneen Sanders is a picture book author who has been teaching young children about consent for over ten years. She believes that we need to teach our children about consent from a young age. Her book is called Let's talk about Body Boundaries, Consent and Respect. Jayneen explains how parents can help their children be empowered, safe and confident.
The Not-So-Perfect Princess and the Not-So-Dreadful Dragon by Jayneen Sanders. The Read with Carylee Show brings the love of literature to children and gives a peek behind-the-scenes by evoking the joy of reading, helping children interact with authors, and displaying the hidden talent of these authors who may be living in your community. In this episode, we're going to read The Not-So-Perfect Princess and the Not-So-Dreadful Dragon by Jayneen Sanders. Princess Petal is NOT what you would expect the ‘perfect’ princess to be. In fact, she is quite the opposite. Her princess dresses are torn and scruffy, she wears an old woolly hat instead of a golden crown, and she is very (very) loud. So, when Princess Petal meets a fire-breathing dragon while out hiking in the forest, both are in for a bit of a shock! An enchanting tale about friendship, diversity, acceptance, and being exactly who we are meant to be. The moral behind this story is imperative yet simple: we are all different and that’s okay, making judgments, and assumptions about people are not okay, all genders should be treated equally. Also included are Discussion Questions for parents, caregivers, and educators. Jayneen (aka Jay Dale) is an experienced primary school teacher, editor, author, and publisher. She started her teaching career in the 1980s as an elementary school teacher in rural Queensland, Australia. She then moved to Victoria and taught at a number of inner-city schools. She is currently working with an educational publisher as the lead author of a new literacy series. Jay has written over 100 titles in that series. Jayneen Sanders is a teacher, former school counsellor and author. She’s a strong public advocate for children’s safety, education and empowerment. Through her time spent in primary schools both as a teacher and a parent, Jayneen was inspired to ask the question of her community: ‘What are we doing in schools to empower children and protect them from inappropriate touch?’ She says when she realised very little was actually being done, she decided to use her authoring and publishing skills to write resources to help parents, caregivers and teachers to broach the subject of self-protection and to encourage children to speak up. In 2014, Jayneen and her partner founded Educate 2 Empower, a niché publisher specialising in children's books and resources that focus on BODY SAFETY EDUCATION, CONSENT, GENDER EQUALITY, RESPECTFUL RELATIONSHIPS and SOCIAL & EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE. We all want to empower our children to be safe. Jayneen Sanders has written several books to help parents help their children be self-aware and safe. Episode Summary: The topic we’re discussing today is one that can be a huge issue for working parents. But it can be sensitive and personal and often brings up plenty of shame and judgment, so I don’t think a lot of people don’t talk openly about it. It’s also something that can easily derail a healthy relationship if you and your spouse are having trouble in this area. Today I’m joined by certified sex therapist Lisa Katona to answer all of your questions about sex and working parenthood. With over a decade of experience in community mental health and private practice, Lisa Katona is thrilled to bring more sex positivity to the world. Lisa completed her Masters in Social Work from the University of Michigan and is a Certified Sex Therapist through the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists. She is also a trained couples therapist, in both Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy and Gottman’s Couples Therapy. Lisa’s therapeutic focus is on sexual wellness with a sex-positive perspective. She has given numerous trainings on the topics of sexual health throughout the Midwest. When she’s not speaking to an audience, Lisa loves her work, providing individual and couples therapy to folks who want or need to talk about sex. Tonight's special guest is Jayneen Sanders (aka Jay Dale) from Melbourne, Australia, an author and advocate for sexual abuse prevention education at UpLoad Publishing. Jayneen is an experienced primary school teacher and a successful children's book author. She is also the mother of three teenage girls and has been a primary school councilor for over seven years. Her time spent in primary schools inspired her to ask: "What are we doing in schools to protect our children from sexual interference?" She realized very little was actually being done and decided to write a book to help parents, careers and teachers to broach the subject of self-protection and to encourage children to speak up. Her accomplishments as a children's book author include writing over 80 titles for Engage Literacy. Jayneen is an advocate for sexual abuse prevention education and is the author of the children's picture book on this topic: "Some Secrets Should Never Be Kept" (www.somesecrets.info). The beautifully illustrated book sensitively broaches the subject of keeping our children safe from sexual interference. It's meant to be used as a tool to help broach the subject with children in a non-threatening way. Jayneen notes, "As the mother of three young children, I knew at some stage in their young lives I would not be there to protect them. With the talk of the ‘first sleep-over', I realized I needed to broach the delicate subject of how they could protect themselves from unwanted interference. I challenged myself to write this book so parents, careers and educators had a tool (one I did not have) to open up the discussion on self-protection."
