In this week's episode, Angie tells the story of two sisters, Peggy and Celia, who try to summon spirits using a Ouija Board.Note: These stories are meant to be listened to with headphones. Note to parents: some of these stories might be too scary for kids younger than 7. The Babadook is a 2014 Australian psychological horror film written and directed by Jennifer Kent, expanding on her 2005 short Monster in her feature debut. Starring Essie Davis and Noah Wiseman, it follows a widowed mother and her increasingly unhinged son as they confront a mysterious, top-hatted entity that may—or may not—be grief in a trench coat. The haunting score is by Jed Kurzel. Interview with Jed Kurzel This week on Sync Music Matters I'm talking to Australian singer-songwriter, guitarist and film composer Jed Kurzel Jed originally started out as the singer and frontman of the blues rock duo The Mess Hall before turning his attention to composing for film. He won the Screen Music Awards Film Score of The Year for his debut film Snowtown. The film which gained international recognition, explores the relationships between the murderous gang members behind a spate of killings in Adelaide, Australia in the 1990s Jed has since gone on to score feature films like The Pope's Exorcist, The Babadook, Slow West and Macbeth to name but a few. In this interview with Jed Kurzel we chat about his childhood obsession with sport and somewhat unplanned foray into scoring film. Listen to Jed Kurzel on Spotify

In 2020 she launched her own music publishing company, Bright Notion Music, signing the composers like Anne Nikitin, Jed Kurzel and Tamar-kali Brown. Lucy has supervised some of the most critically-acclaimed British films and TV shows in recent years including The Unloved, The Arbor, Slow West, Southcliffe, McMafia, This is England ‘90, Daphne, The Virtues, The Nest, Life After Life and BAFTA-winning short The Swimmer. Most recently, she has worked on Charlotte Wells' directorial debut AFTERSUN and Todd Field's TÁR, set within the world of classical music in which Cate Blanchett plays the first female conductor of a German orchestra. VOLKER BERTELMANN: Volker Bertelmann is an internationally acclaimed pianist, composer and experimental musician. Most recently, she has worked on two forthcoming films: Charlotte Wells' directorial debut AFTERSUN, which is showing at this year's London Film Festival and then coming to UK cinemas via MUBI on 18th November, and I can testify it has a truly phenomenal soundtrack and Todd Field's TÁR, set within the world of classical music in which Cate Blanchett plays the first female conductor of a German orchestra. It recently premiered to critical acclaim at the Venice Film Festival and is one of my most hotly anticipated films of the year. We spoke about how Lucy got her start in the music industry and then gradually discovered the role of music supervision, getting her first credit as a music supervisor on Samantha Morton's TV film THE UNLOVED, how she collaborates with directors and other HoDs to build a soundtrack, why certain songs cost more than others, how needle drops happen and what song she is particularly proud of clearing for use in a film…

Seja talks to her guest Jed Kurzel (The Mess Hall, film composer) about how he gravitated towards all kinds of music as a kid, how he was first inspired by the Velvet Underground, Creedence and Kris Kristofferson, and his ambidexterity. Jed tells Seja about starting what would eventually become the Mess Hall with his brother Justin, and how becoming a two-piece coupled with the intuition and dynamics of drummer Cec Condon changed the sound of the band. Jed and Seja chat about making soundscapes/loops, using music as a narrative and tricking yourself into starting a score by making mistakes. Jed’s strange show story is illustrated by Cec Condon. In this special edition episode, Poppy Reid chats to future-pop act Cloves and singer-songwriter and screen composer Jed Kurzel. The conversation took place at London's RAK Studios in front of a live audience, the morning after the Global APRA Music Awards.
Our guest on the latest episode of Soundtracking is an Australian composer who has worked for a wide-range of critically acclaimed directors, including Sir Ridley Scott. Jed Kurzel's latest project is True History Of The Kelly Gang, which sees him continue his long-standing partnership with brother Justin - a previous interviewee on this show. The pair worked together on Snowtown, Macbeth and Assassin's Creed, while Jed also provided the score for Jennifer Kent's The Babadook, John Maclean's Slow West and, of course, Sir Ridley's Alien Covenant
Jed Kurzel's new score for The Mustang, which was released this week, is the spur for a programme looking at the horse in film. Matthew Sweet considers the role of the workhorse with music from John Williams and Ron Goodwin. Velvet Brown features in the National and International Velvet films and Black Beauty also plays a starring role. We go to the races with Seabiscuit, My Fair Lady and the Marx Brothers. The therapeutic role of horses is considered in The Horse Whisperer and The Mustang. And this week's Classic Score is André Previn's music for The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

Following a string of seasoned moviemakers such as Luc Besson, Doug Liman and Steven Soderbergh, we bring you a relative novice this week in the shape of Benedict Andrews. At least - a novice in cinematic terms. For Benedict is one of the world's foremost theatre and opera directors, who makes the transition to the screen with psychological thriller Una. Given this is Benedict's first film, much of the conversation focuses on the differences between the mediums in which he's worked. It also gives us an opportunity to play you examples of music from his stage productions, including extracts from Alex Baranowski's smoky, cinematic score for Streetcar Named Desire, which starred Gillian Anderson. But there's plenty to discuss when it come to Una too. Starring the ever excellent Rooney Mara and Ben Mendelsohn, the narrative centres on a woman confronting an older man about a illicit sexual relationship which took place in their past. The film is scored by Benedict's friend Jed Kurzel, whose work we discussed at length during a previous show with Jed's brother, Justin. Jed has developed a reputation as a composer of serious weight, as evidence by the fact he and the London Contemporary Orchestra recently provided the music for Ridley Scott's Alien Covenant. Hardly surprising, then, that Benedict turned to his old mate on taking the plunge from stage to screen ...

Not counting when that rascally Xenomorph fought the Predator in two rather wildly WTF movies from the past decade, we now have the sixth Alien-franchise films. 'Covenant' follows Prometheus, which you may or may not have seen (though we certainly talked about that 2012 film, all the way back in episode *9.4* in our retrospective on director RIDLEY SCOTT - Jack mistakenly said episode 4 in this episode fyi, our apologies for the error), and... how did this one come out? We had a spirited discussion about this film, with Andrew coining the phrase "Movie Sense", which he explains right around the time of the SPOILERS at 27:40 mins/seconds in.
