Still...An ancient castle that only appears in the mist, and a holy sword that rests therein...It's like a fairy tale! Just hearing about it makes my heart beat faster! This week on Retro Encounter, a panel of Falcom afficianados (and one relative newcomer) explores the ruins of Xanadu Next's Harlech Island. Released all the way back in 2005 (and brought to US shores courtesy of XSEED Games in 2016), Xanadu Next is one of Falcom's oft-forgotten classics, with a dark, somber tone and slower pace influenced by Yasumi Matsuno's Ivalice universe (Vagrant Story in particular). We discuss Charlotte Wells and our unnamed protagonist knights' inauspicious start to their investigation of Harlech Island's ancient mysteries, how the game's combat compares to other isometric action RPGs like Diablo, and the merits of interconnected world design. Give it a listen if you love Falcom's golden era of PC releases, or if you're curious about the game's ingenious (at times frustrating) key economy.Featuring: Aleks Franiczek, Ben Love, Audra Bowling; Edited by Zach WilkersonOpening and ending music by Miles MorkriGet in Touch:RPGFan.comRPGFan ShopEmail us: retro@rpgfan.comTwitter: @rpgfancomBluesky: @rpgfan.bsky.socialInstagram: @rpgfancomThreads: @rpgfancomFacebook: rpgfancomTwitch: rpgfancom

On this episode of Bad Dads Film Review, the team reviews Aftersun (2022) — Charlotte Wells' quietly devastating father-daughter memory piece starring Paul Mescal and Frankie Corio. In this episodeTop 5 Holidays: package holiday dread, cancelled flights, family trips, airport memories, and British holiday behaviour at its absolute finest/worstSidey's Malta anxiety and the curse of relatives who “mog” every conversationWhat the dads watched this week, including Spider-Noir, Is This Thing On?, Heat, and other pre-main-feature detoursWhy Aftersun plays less like a traditional plot and more like an adult trying to decode childhood memoryAdult Sophie watching old camcorder footage of her holiday with Calum in TurkeyThe recurring rave/strobe imagery and Sophie trying to reach the father she only half-understoodCalum's hidden depression: cigarettes, self-help books, Tai Chi, money worries, shame, and emotional withdrawalThe cheap holiday resort details: rep bus, room mix-up, wristbands, dinner run, pool tables, scuba mask, karaoke and tourist entertainmentThe expensive rug as a possible attempt to leave Sophie something tangibleThe brutal karaoke scene with Losing My ReligionThe final dance to Under Pressure and the airport departure endingHow the film handles male depression and implied suicide without spelling everything outPaul Mescal and Frankie Corio's performances, and why the film rewards intense viewingBad Dads consensusReegs: Loved it — brilliantly made, emotionally precise, dreamlike, and rich in detailSidey: Strong recommend — hugely powerful, very well made, but absolutely not a fun watchDan: Strong recommend, with caveats — found it genuinely hard to sit with because it stirred up memories and difficult emotionsCris: Did not meaningfully watch it — put it on, went for a wee, fell asleep, and woke up when it was doneFinal takeAftersun is one of those films the dads admire deeply while also warning listeners to choose their moment carefully. It is quiet, ambiguous and emotionally bruising — a film about memory, parenting, depression, guilt, love and what children only understand years later. You can now text us anonymously to leave feedback, suggest future content or simply hurl abuse at us. This episode featured Charlotte Wells, a guest whose story carried both grit and a surprising light. A former meth and benzodiazepine addict, she spoke with a level of energy and enthusiasm that immediately filled the airwaves. Her emotion was genuine, transcending borders and miles all well challenging the usual expectations people might have about someone with her past. Her honesty about the chaos of addiction, paired with her humor and sharp perspective, created moments that were both heavy and uplifting. The team found themselves relating to her on multiple levels—whether it was the patterns of addiction, the resilience required to keep going, or the clarity that can come with time and hard-earned sobriety.

A deep dive conversation based on the moviescramble.co.uk review written by Mary Munoz. At a fading vacation resort, 11-year-old Sophie treasures the rare time she spends with her loving, idealistic father, Calum (Paul Mescal). As a world of adolescence creeps into view, beyond her eye, Calum struggles under the weight of life outside of fatherhood. Twenty years later, Sophie's tender recollections of their last holiday become a powerful and heartrending portrait of their relationship, as she tries to reconcile the father she knew with the man she didn't, in Charlotte Wells' superb and searingly emotional debut film. Marty and Clif give Charlotte and Chris the movie America's Sweethearts to watch. This week on Talking Pondo, Marty and Clif welcome Chris and Charlotte from the “It's Just a Show” podcast for a double feature that jumps from behind-the-scenes Hollywood comedy to rock-and-roll mythology.First up is America's Sweethearts, a Hollywood satire starring Julia Roberts, John Cusack, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Billy Crystal. Set during a chaotic press junket for a troubled movie production, the film pokes fun at celebrity culture, studio marketing, and the machinery behind selling a film to the public. Then the conversation shifts to Purple Rain, the iconic Prince-led music drama that helped define the sound and style of the 1980s. The crew digs into the film's strange mix of concert movie, melodrama, and star-making myth that launched Prince into pop culture legend. They talk about the film's messy narrative, Prince's complicated on-screen persona, and why the final performance of “Purple Rain” still hits like a lightning bolt. #TalkingPondo #PurpleRain #AmericasSweethearts #Prince #FilmPodcast #MovieDiscussion #80sMovies #RomCom Support the showFind our films here:The Love Song of William H ShawRevenge of ZoeWriting Fren-ZeeMaking Pondo on FacebookX (formerly Twitter):@MakingPondoInstagramMaking Pondo on Letterboxd:Season OneSeason TwoSeason ThreeSeason FourTheme Song "The Rain" by Russ PacePhotos by Geoffrey Notkin

What is memory? Why do we remember and forget? How does the puzzle of memory fit together or fall apart in our minds? In the 2022 film “Aftersun,” written and directed by Charlotte Wells, a woman tries to look back into the foggy past of her memory, remembering a childhood vacation with her dad while trying to uncover clues about his troubled life. Delving into the psychology of memory, development and coming of age, mental health, depression, what it means to have emotions and feelings, financial burdens and weights and what that does to people, vulnerability, ambiguity, self destruct mechanisms, and much more-“Aftersun” is  a wonderful father/daughter story, but also a deeper examination into beginnings and endings-and just like memory itself, it is told through shadows, reflections, and mirrors.  This is part one in a six part series on the 2022 movie “Aftersun.” You can find the rest of the series on Patreon page here: https://www.patreon.com/reflectinghistory. To what extent are ordinary people responsible for the development of authoritarian evil? This 13 part podcast series explores these massive questions and more through the lens of Nazi Germany and the ordinary people who collaborated or resisted as the Third Reich expanded. You'll not only learn about the horrifying, surprising, and powerful ways in which the Nazis seized and maintained power, but also fundamental lessons about what fascism is-how to spot it and why it spreads. As the secrets of the House deepen and the mystery of his life becomes more sinister, Piranesi must discover who he is and how this brings him closer to the “Great and Secret Knowledge” that the House contains. Touching on themes of memory, identity, mental health, knowledge, reason, experience, meaning, reflection, ideals, and more…Piranesi will be remembered as one of the great books of the 21st century. As summer begins in earnest, we're looking back at a 2022 highlight—Charlotte Wells's staggering debut feature Aftersun—and revisiting one of our most popular episodes ever: a conversation with film critic, author, and educator Adam Nayman. Adam shares special insights from his conversation with Wells about the film, plus the case for cinematic mystery, Paul Mescal crying, analog devices and the technology of memory, good karaoke scenes, fatherhood feelings, and why 2022 stinker The Whale stumbles precisely where Aftersun soars. In which the Mister joins me in reviewing AFTERSUN (2022), from the directorial debut of Charlotte Wells, with a screenplay by Charlotte Wells. As an adult, Sophie (Celia Rowlson-Hall), attempts to piece together and better understand her father, Calum (Paul Mescal) by revisiting old home videos and delving into childhood memories of the last vacation she as an eleven year old (wonderfully portrayed by Frankie Corio) spent with her Dad. Through the course of the film and story, we are given small clues to the larger story at play and the end will leave you breathless. The film has a run time of 1 h and 42 m, is rated R and is available on the Hoopla app, but also streaming on Paramount+ and to buy/rent on Prime Video. Please note there are SPOILERS in this review. #Aftersun  #CharlotteWells  #FrankieCorio  #SophieAt11  #PaulMescal  #Calum  #CeliaRowlsonHall  #AdultSophie  @Hoopla  @Paramount+  @PrimeVideo  #FemaleFilmmakerFriday  #FridayFamilyFilmNight Opening intro music: GOAT by Wayne Jones, courtesy of YouTube Audio Library --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/jokagoge/support

It explores themes of loneliness, mental health issues, and human connection, using beautiful cinematic devices. We'll give you a few hints—it's not an American film and it's a coming-of-age story, perhaps not for whom you might think. The other is making waves on Netflix. A covert office romance gone wrong. A high-power couple sees their relationship tested in the battleground that is Wall Street when one unsuspectedly gets a promotion. Aftersun is a brave film written & directed by Charlotte Wells that focuses on the dynamic between single parents and their children especially when dealing with depression coming from the parent. It's a simple in its plot but complex as to what the characters go through in an emotional and physiological level. I love it for the writing, the acting and stage direction Wells was able to successfully accomplish, as well as how the cinematography presents the dynamics. Enjoy!#aftersun #charlottewells #a24

The comedian Katherine Ryan has been in the news this week after she spoke out on a recent documentary with Louis Theroux about confronting an alleged sexual predator while making a tv show. She says this ‘star' has sexually assaulted women she knows and despite it being an ‘open secret' in the industry no one has managed to nail him down because he has ‘very good lawyers'. In the documentary she refuses to name the alleged sexual predator and then was called out on this on social media. But what is there to gain for women who name sexual predators in this way? Comedian Grace Campbell and Psychologist Dr Holi Rubin discuss the complexities of father and daughter relationships with Anita off the back of a new film Aftersun. It stars Paul Mescal, is directed by Charlotte Wells and has been applauded for the way it presents the bond between a father and daughter. Last month women's boxing made history when Claressa Shields and Savannah Marshall fought in front of a sell-out crowd at the 02 arena to become the World Middleweight Champion. Not only was it the first-ever all female card in the UK but also the first time that two female boxers headlined at a major British venue. Despite this these developments 99% of all boxers are men and it remains a male dominated sport in all areas. One woman trying to change this is Susannah Schofield OBE. With her longstanding career in business and coaching she is using her knowledge, skills, and experience to ensure that women boxers get the same opportunities as their male counterparts, through her organisation championing female boxers. She hopes to harness the growing appetite for women's sport with the recent successes of women's football and rugby by convincing the BBC to show women's boxing. A recent report by the Local Government Association said “the largest proportional increase in gonorrhoea and chlamydia was seen in people aged over 65” leading up to the pandemic. But why are older people so often left out of the conversation about sexual health? Anita Rani is joined by Elaine Kingett, 70, who found herself widowed and having to buy condoms for the first time in her 50s and Professor Kaye Wellings, who is currently working on the next action plan on older adults and sexual health for the government. It's one of those episodes of Soundtracking which we love so much, in which Edith gets to pick the brains of an up-and-coming filmmaker who's just beginning their journey in the industry. Charlotte Wells's debut feature Aftersun is an absolutely beautiful piece of work, telling the story of Sophie as she reflects upon a holiday with her then young father they took together 20 years earlier. As well as containing countless fantastic needle drops, Aftersun is also expertly scored by Oliver Coates, who very kindly furnished us with cues from his as yet unreleased score. Cheers, Oliver!
