This week, it's a film that had 5 stars to lose from the start, as we tackle the coming of age drama from Charlotte Wells, who writes and directs Paul Mescal as a young father, as his daughter Sophie reflects on the shared joy and private melancholy of a holiday she took with her father twenty years earlier. - mudbaths and the macarena ensues - it's Aftersun! We talk all things Cast, Production and Plot, and there's a game, imaginatively called "After Sun", where Carl has to name a movie title that comes after the word 'sun'.Plus we reveal our top 3 movies set on holiday and induct another two movies into the Movie The Needle Classics Collection. Send us a textIt's no surprise Mark adores a film about someone overanalysing film as he tries to figure out what makes Aftersun so mesmerising, how the film runs on several slowly simmering tensions, and if he can get through this podcast without crying.https://markoveranalysesfilm.buzzsprout.com/https://www.markoveranalysesstory.com/https://twitter.com/overanalysefilm
Kelsi and Trey explore Charlotte Wells' stunning debut film, Aftersun. Through heartfelt analysis and thoughtful discussion, we explore the film's mediative portrayal of memory and loss, examining the nuanced performances of Paul Mescal and Frankie Corio, the layers of emotional depth in the screenplay, and the themes of familial bonds, identity struggles, and unresolved grief. What is memory? Why do we remember and forget? How does the puzzle of memory fit together or fall apart in our minds? In the 2022 film “Aftersun,” written and directed by Charlotte Wells, a woman tries to look back into the foggy past of her memory, remembering a childhood vacation with her dad while trying to uncover clues about his troubled life. Delving into the psychology of memory, development and coming of age, mental health, depression, what it means to have emotions and feelings, financial burdens and weights and what that does to people, vulnerability, ambiguity, self destruct mechanisms, and much more-“Aftersun” is a wonderful father/daughter story, but also a deeper examination into beginnings and endings-and just like memory itself, it is told through shadows, reflections, and mirrors. This is part one in a six part series on the 2022 movie “Aftersun.” You can find the rest of the series on Patreon page here: https://www.patreon.com/reflectinghistory. This 13 part podcast series explores these massive questions and more through the lens of Nazi Germany and the ordinary people who collaborated or resisted as the Third Reich expanded. As the secrets of the House deepen and the mystery of his life becomes more sinister, Piranesi must discover who he is and how this brings him closer to the “Great and Secret Knowledge” that the House contains. Touching on themes of memory, identity, mental health, knowledge, reason, experience, meaning, reflection, ideals, and more…Piranesi will be remembered as one of the great books of the 21st century. As summer begins in earnest, we're looking back at a 2022 highlight—Charlotte Wells's staggering debut feature Aftersun—and revisiting one of our most popular episodes ever: a conversation with film critic, author, and educator Adam Nayman. Adam shares special insights from his conversation with Wells about the film, plus the case for cinematic mystery, Paul Mescal crying, analog devices and the technology of memory, good karaoke scenes, fatherhood feelings, and why 2022 stinker The Whale stumbles precisely where Aftersun soars. In which the Mister joins me in reviewing AFTERSUN (2022), from the directorial debut of Charlotte Wells, with a screenplay by Charlotte Wells. As an adult, Sophie (Celia Rowlson-Hall), attempts to piece together and better understand her father, Calum (Paul Mescal) by revisiting old home videos and delving into childhood memories of the last vacation she as an eleven year old (wonderfully portrayed by Frankie Corio) spent with her Dad. Through the course of the film and story, we are given small clues to the larger story at play and the end will leave you breathless. The film has a run time of 1 h and 42 m, is rated R and is available on the Hoopla app, but also streaming on Paramount+ and to buy/rent on Prime Video. Riffing on Kim Gordon's curation, we get into Lynne Ramsay's atmospheric Morvern Callar (2002), a mixtape of a film whose cursed vacation vibes echo something of Barbara Loden's Wanda and foreshadow Charlotte Wells' Aftersun. Shout outs to Georgia Humphreys' terrific essay “Another Girl, Another Planet” and The Mamas and the Papas' unlikely club banger, “Dedicated to the One I Love.” The Bright Wall/Dark Room Podcast is co-hosted by Veronica Fitzpatrick and Chad Perman and produced and edited by Eli Sands. We're off to Türkiye this week to eat hamburgers, fries, rolls, strawberry ice cream, and lemon Fanta before we discuss Aftersun. We all connect with this film's captivating depiction of a father-daughter relationship being damaged by depression. Paul Mescal has a nice butt and is brilliant in his portrayal of Calum. We don't intend to put them under pressure, but we want to see more of young actress Frankie Corio and writer/director Charlotte Wells. Rave on!
Happy Thursday! It's movie night AND trivia time on MASKulinity this week. Remoy and Samantha give each other their favorite film recommendations that expose MASKulinity in different ways. One is a thoughtful indie about a father-daughter vacation. It explores themes of loneliness, mental health issues, and human connection, using beautiful cinematic devices. We'll give you a few hints—it's not an American film and it's a coming-of-age story, perhaps not for whom you might think. The other is making waves on Netflix. A covert office romance gone wrong. A high-power couple sees their relationship tested in the battleground that is Wall Street when one unsuspectedly gets a promotion. The filmmaker asks a pertinent question: Why does a woman being powerful make a man feel powerless? There are spoilers in the companion pieces—you've been warned! This month, one of our themes is “Catching Up” and we're watching some of the acclaimed movies we missed last year and HOLY SHIT 2022 WAS POPPING OFF! This will probably end up being our most heavy hitter choices this month. Hell, this week is all bangers. We watched Charlotte Wells heart rendering debut feature film “Aftersun” starring Paul Mescal and Frankie Corio and Bob cried like a baby at the end. He also cried, on camera near the end of this discussion. Also, he cried again when he edited this episode. What a pussy. Go check this movie out. It's something else. The directorial debut of Charlotte Wells flew under the radar until many eventually saw it, declaring it the best film of the festival. With A24 distributing and "Moonlight's" Barry Jenkins and Adele Romanski producing, the tiny independent film took awards season by storm, winning nearly every breakthrough/first-time director prize and more. With "Normal People" star Paul Mescal receiving an Oscar nomination for Best Actor, we decided days before the ceremony to go back and review this film which we missed during its initial theatrical release. This episode contains major spoilers and deals with difficult subject matter, so please watch the film before you listen to this discussion. Freelance film critic and programmer Rafa Sales Ross joins me from Scotland to discuss Charlotte Wells' debut feature Aftersun, starring newcomer Frankie Corio and Paul Mescal in an Academy Award-nominated performance as Calum, a Scottish single father who takes his 11 year old daughter Sophie on a trip to a resort in Turkey in the late nineties, a story told partly through the use of MiniDV holiday footage but more importantly refracted from the perspective of a grown-up Sophie, now at the same age her father was on this fateful vacation and reconsidering her memories. As a film critic who saw Aftersun at its tear-soaked screening at Cannes and as part of the programming team that later selected the film to open the Edinburgh International Film Festival, Rafa is uniquely equipped to speak about this powerful drama about what gets captured in the “mind camera”; parenthood, loss, depression, empathy, memory, nostalgia and the hard-won wisdom children experience when they transform into adults and finally start to understand their parents as people. There are over three dozen premium episodes of the show available exclusively to patrons: some notable previous Patreon guests include Jared Yates Sexton, Jacob Bacharach, David Roth, Bryan Quinby and Sooz Kempner. Episode 550 is here! To celebrate the latest Empire Podcast landmark, we once again staged a live show at Kings Place, London, and now here is that show, reassembled in the correct order and with the really naughty bits cut out (to see those, the live stream of the show is still available to watch via kings place.co.uk for the next two weeks!). And it was a belter, as Chris Hewitt, Helen O'Hara, Ben Travis, and James Dyer took to the stage in front of a packed crowd of loyal listeners, and chatted about the week's movie news, reviewed EO, Puss In Boots: The Last Wish, The Whale, Knock At The Cabin, and Saint Omer, and answered a ton of listener questions. But that's not all: a landmark episode deserves a landmark line-up of guests, and we didn't disappoint, with Aftersun director Charlotte Wells and her young star, Frankie Corio, joining James and Helen for a chat about the BAFTA-nominated belter; director Asif Kapadia showed up to talk to Chris about Kapadia's new film, Creature (and NOT Liverpool Football Club, or the Queen); and we looked ahead to the big-screen debut of Luther in Luther: The Fallen Sun by inviting director Jamie Payne and the film's villain, living legend and national treasure Andy Serkis, along to chat with Chris and James. A good time was had by all on the night, and we hope you enjoy this as much as we did. Enjoy.
We go on holiday this week with two films with resorts as their settings. Brandon Cronenberg's latest, Infinity Pool, is a speculative horror trip that charts the experience of a struggling writer who stumbles into a sort of tourism that goes beyond any we've ever before seen on screen. Aftersun is the debut feature of Charlotte Wells, offering a semi-autobiographical look at a moment in a father-daughter relationship that takes on more gravity as the daughter looks back at it many years in the future. Lots to discuss and some fine beers to sip, so get on your cabana wear and settle in with us by the pool, won't you?
For our annual fashionably late “Best Of” issue, we're looking at a 2022 highlight: Charlotte Wells's staggering debut feature Aftersun, featuring film critic, author, and educator Adam Nayman. For more on Aftersun, check out producer Barry Jenkins's conversation with director Wells for the Directors UK podcast, Filmmaker's profile, and Wells's own letter to audiences for A24. Josh is joined by recurring guests Ben Luben and Arjun Kaul to talk about the debut film from writer/director Charlotte Wells, "Aftersun." They discuss how the film effectively manages to feel like a memory, its depiction of children being able to be perceptive about their parents, the Oscar-nominated performance from Paul Mescal, the impressive debut performance from child actor Frankie Corio and much more!
We continue our Aftersun interview series as Lee welcomes Harry Perdios to discuss his role as Toby in Charlotte Wells' acclaimed debut film as he shares his experiences shooting the film and career so far. In 'Aftersun' Sophie reflects on the shared joy and private melancholy of a holiday she took with her father twenty years earlier to Turkey where they meet Harry's Toby as a young teen also on holiday who welcomes Sophie into their group.Check out our previous Aftersun interviews with Charlotte Wells, Paul Mescal, Frankie Corio, Sally Messham & Kayleigh Coleman in our back catalogue
This week on The Treatment, Elvis sits down with Charlotte Wells, director of the acclaimed film “Aftersun.” Next, writer Jerry Stahl talks about his latest book, “Nein, Nein, Nein: One Man's Tale of Depression, Psychic Torment, and a Bus Tour of the Holocaust.” And on The Treat, director Paul Feig explains how an ordinary object that sits on his desk changed the course of his life and career.
Talk about a two-hand spectacular! We've got Nikole Beckwith, the director of one phenomenal indie two-hander (Together Together, starring Ed Helms and Patti Harrison) talking about the two-hander debut from director Charlotte Wells (in which the two “hands” are Paul Mescal and Frankie Corio). And only two of our usual hosts are here (which was totally planned, look how nice it all lines up, no holes in this story!). Then there's a quiz about – what else – Two-Handers! Today, we have with us the extraordinary Charlotte Wells – writer-director of one of the most affecting feature debuts in recent memory. Aftersun is a meditative drama about a father and daughter on a resort holiday in Turkey, told through the eyes and camcorder footage of 11-year-old Sophie, played by Frankie Corio. She shares a sweet relationship with her father Callum, played by Paul Mescal. Across their holiday, however, she's able to steal glimpses of him wrestling with problems beyond her comprehension, – problems he attempts to hide from the world. It's a story about memory, parenthood and the heartbreak of growing up and realising that your parents are people, too, with their own burdens to carry. Inevitably, it's being described as an awards season frontrunner, and one of the best movies of 2022.In the conversation you're about to hear, Charlotte tells me how the film began as an exploration of her relationship with her own dad, who she sadly lost aged sixteen. There's a certain overlap between her life and the events of the movie that we unpack in this chat, as well as some big differences between her early drafts of Aftersun versus the final film. Initially, the film was set to feature an adult version of Sophie wandering through scenes following her childhood self, like a sun-soaked Scrooge in A Christmas Carol. There was also a romantic relationship at the holiday resort for Callum that got jettisoned, and much more melodrama, a more pronounced plot.We talk why she stripped away those elements to drill deeper into the father-daughter tensions at the heart of the film, what it is about the pressures and repetitions of a family holiday that make for such an interesting backdrop to the film, and what exactly is happening in the film's astonishing emotional climax: a dance sequence set to Queen's Under Pressure, whose lyrics take on a poignant new meaning in the context of Callum and Sophie's relationship. It's a spoiler conversation, so be sure to watch the film on Mubi before tuning in. Script Apart is hosted by Al Horner and produced by Kamil Dymek. Aftersun is a brave film written & directed by Charlotte Wells that focuses on the dynamic between single parents and their children especially when dealing with depression coming from the parent. It's a simple in its plot but complex as to what the characters go through in an emotional and physiological level. I love it for the writing, the acting and stage direction Wells was able to successfully accomplish, as well as how the cinematography presents the dynamics. Enjoy!#aftersun #charlottewells #a24

The comedian Katherine Ryan has been in the news this week after she spoke out on a recent documentary with Louis Theroux about confronting an alleged sexual predator while making a tv show. She says this ‘star' has sexually assaulted women she knows and despite it being an ‘open secret' in the industry no one has managed to nail him down because he has ‘very good lawyers'. In the documentary she refuses to name the alleged sexual predator and then was called out on this on social media. But what is there to gain for women who name sexual predators in this way? Comedian Grace Campbell and Psychologist Dr Holi Rubin discuss the complexities of father and daughter relationships with Anita off the back of a new film Aftersun. It stars Paul Mescal, is directed by Charlotte Wells and has been applauded for the way it presents the bond between a father and daughter. Last month women's boxing made history when Claressa Shields and Savannah Marshall fought in front of a sell-out crowd at the 02 arena to become the World Middleweight Champion. Not only was it the first-ever all female card in the UK but also the first time that two female boxers headlined at a major British venue. Despite this these developments 99% of all boxers are men and it remains a male dominated sport in all areas. One woman trying to change this is Susannah Schofield OBE. With her longstanding career in business and coaching she is using her knowledge, skills, and experience to ensure that women boxers get the same opportunities as their male counterparts, through her organisation championing female boxers. She hopes to harness the growing appetite for women's sport with the recent successes of women's football and rugby by convincing the BBC to show women's boxing. A recent report by the Local Government Association said “the largest proportional increase in gonorrhoea and chlamydia was seen in people aged over 65” leading up to the pandemic. But why are older people so often left out of the conversation about sexual health? Anita Rani is joined by Elaine Kingett, 70, who found herself widowed and having to buy condoms for the first time in her 50s and Professor Kaye Wellings, who is currently working on the next action plan on older adults and sexual health for the government. Presenter: Anita Rani Producer: Kirsty Starkey Interviewed Guest: Harriet Johnson Interviewed Guest: Polly Vernon Interviewed Guest: Grace Campbell Interviewed Guest: Dr Holi Rubin Interviewed Guest: Susannah Schofield Interviewed Guest: Elaine Kingett Interviewed Guest: Prof Kaye Wellings
Lee is joined by actor Sally Messham who plays Belinda, a travel rep in Aftersun, the debut feature from Charlotte Wells. Sophie reflects on the shared joy and private melancholy of a holiday she took with her father twenty years earlier to Turkey where they meet Messham's Belinda.
It's one of those episodes of Soundtracking which we love so much, in which Edith gets to pick the brains of an up-and-coming filmmaker who's just beginning their journey in the industry. Charlotte Wells's debut feature Aftersun is an absolutely beautiful piece of work, telling the story of Sophie as she reflects upon a holiday with her then young father they took together 20 years earlier. As well as containing countless fantastic needle drops, Aftersun is also expertly scored by Oliver Coates, who very kindly furnished us with cues from his as yet unreleased score. Cheers, Oliver!
