Welcome to this week's episode of the Mixtape with Scott! Recently, the University of Chicago Press published a book entitled The Economic Approach: Unpublished Writings of Gary S. Becker. It was written obviously by Gary Becker who died almost 10 years ago at the age of 83 after an extremely long and fruitful career as an economist. Dr. Becker had many students — some like me were students from afar, but some, like our guest today, were his actual students. And today's guest is Casey Mulligan, one of the editors of that aforementioned book, and a professor of economics at the University of Chicago. This was a fun interview to do. Casey walked us through his time at Harvard as an undergrad to his unusually rapid progression through Chicago's economics PhD program where he stayed on and is now a professor. We discussed his own career but we also spent just a lot of time discussing what it was like with Becker, as well as his own later time at the Council of Economic Advisers. I hope you enjoy it!Scott's Substack is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. One unique way to help seniors feel great about themselves is via memory training. In this episode, Dana Steinova discusses her memory training approach based on mnemonics. Its power is in its ability to change the mindset of people who suffer from memory lapses and people who are giving up, accepting their memory problems as inevitable or something that belongs to the natural aging process. Her program convinces the participants that, in reality, they have tremendous mental potential. They activate special circuits in the brain that people unfamiliar with such techniques leave idle. The program works because cognitive and social effects are so connected. People learn to remember well and usually don't resist performing their new skills in front of family members or friends.Once people get proof that they can remember well, they start to approach any new information with a positive expectation that they will remember it, which affects the result. The outcome is that they minimize memory lapses in daily life. They do not need any calendar because they keep the entire year in their mind and can tell you what day of the week is any date in the current year. They can easily remember a shopping list with 150 items or any line of digits, and they improve their ability to remember faces and names. In this episode, participants will discover how to:Use mnemonics rather than memorization to make memories more durableMinimize memory lapses.Exercise new parts of the brain and build our brain reserve to help in the case of stroke, brain injury, or onset of dementia.About Dana Steinova:Dana Steinova travels the world training memory trainers. Based in Prague, she is a specialist in organizing educational activities. She is also the very active secretary general of the European Federation of Older People (EURAG), created in 1962, with 156 member associations in 33 European countries. She holds degrees from the Institute of Enlightenment, the Economics University, and the Charles University in Prague. She has, over the past 30 years, initiated a wide variety of programs, including the U3A movement in the Czech Republic (1986), reciprocal senior student exchanges with more than 42 exchanges within its first ten years (1991), and founding the first intergenerational non-vocational "University of Free Time" (1993) in the Czech Republic. She is fascinated by neuroscience and has been deeply involved with memory training since 1993. She founded the Czech Society for Memory Training and Brain Jogging in 1998 and later, the EURAG Memory Training Center in Prague in 2002 with the objective of making training opportunities available worldwide. Since then she has traveled the world extensively to achieve this objective. She organized the first National Day of Memory Training as a part of Brain Awareness Week, the worldwide event launched in 2005 by the DANA Alliance of the Brain and which takes place in March every year. In 2008 it became the National Week of Memory Training and has been growing ever since. In 2016, 309 free lectures were held throughout the Czech and Slovak Republic, attended by 7,781 persons.Get in touch with Dana Steinova:Visit Dana's website: https://www.trenovanipameti.cz/eurag-memory-training-center/ What to do next: Click to grab our free guide, 10 Key Issues to Consider as You Explore Your Retirement Transition Please leave a review at Apple Podcasts. Ep. Br#010 In 2026, Nepal will be graduating from the LDC status after meeting the graduation criteria for three consecutive UN triennials (2015, 2018, 2021) reviews conducted by the Committee for Development Policy (CDP). Nepal has been granted an additional two years to the 3-year transition period generally given by the UN, therefore, making graduation effective from 2026. However, questions have been raised on this proposal as Nepal's GNI per capita is well below the LDC graduation threshold and also below the LDC average hence, the rising doubts on whether Nepal will be able to sustain the status. Notably, Nepal will have to relinquish the International Support Mechanisms it has been receiving as an LDC. That would mean the loss of preferential market access, stringent rules of origin requirements, and possible increases in tariffs on selected goods leading to significant losses in exports. In this episode of The Brief, PEI colleague Aslesh sits with Dr. Paras Kharel, where the two talk about the rationale behind categorizing countries as an LDC and discuss Nepal's graduation from the LDC status and its implications on trade, development assistance and policy space. They then examine the failings of the export sector and the policy changes required to boost the sector. They conclude with some key takeaways from the post-graduation experiences and strategies of a few countries which have graduated and competently sustained the graduation. Paras Kharel is Executive Director at South Asia Watch on Trade, Economics and Environment (SAWTEE), a Kathmandu-based think tank. He has over 15 years of research experience in trade and development. He has a PhD in Economics (University of Melbourne) with specialization in international trade and applied microeconometrics. His publications include two edited volumes on South Asian cooperation/integration, and articles in peer-reviewed journals such as Review of International Economics, International Economics, and East Asian Economic Review.

Political parties in India, the largest democracy in the world, often try to win over voters by offering them free gifts such as television sets, mixers and grinders, electricity, and food rations. The list is long, and the trend not new, but a fierce debate over freebies is now raging in the country, especially after the issue reached the Supreme Court. It's a complex debate in a country where hundreds of millions of people still live below the poverty line. Can India really draw the line between welfare schemes, subsidies and freebies? Many experts point out that irrational freebies are doled out from public funds and put state finances under tremendous financial stress. Others say many of these schemes are life-changing interventions for the poor. What is the way forward, and what can be done to ensure political parties are more mindful when making these promises? In this edition of WorklifeIndia, we discuss whether India can afford a freebie culture. Since the 2008 publication of the global bestseller Nudge, co-authored by Richard Thaler and Cass Sunstein, the word “nudge” has entered the vocabulary of many businesspeople, policymakers, engaged citizens and consumers everywhere. It has taught us how to use thoughtful “choice architecture”—a concept the authors invented—to help us make better decisions for ourselves, our families and our society. "Nudging" is a simple change that alters people's behavior in a predictable way without forbidding any options or significantly changing their economic incentives. It's the option to opt out of your company's 401k retirement program as opposed to opting in, or the placement of fruits and vegetables at eye level in grocery stores to encourage healthier eating. In 2021, the authors have rewritten the book from cover to cover, building Nudge: The Final Edition out of the last dozen years' worth of new research, insight, and experience. The book touches on a wide variety of issues we face in our daily lives—COVID-19, personal finance, home mortgages, climate change and more. Co-author and economist Richard Thaler is the professor of Behavioral Science and Economics at the University of Chicago and, in 2017, won the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences for his contributions to the field of behavioral economics. Ariel Wirkierman (University of Sussex). LINK TO SLIDES: https://www.soas.ac.uk/economics/events/economics-seminars/file120582.pdf Varieties of Growth Regimes, Innovation Systems and Structural Changes in Europe: Challenges for XXI Century This paper aims to provide an empirically grounded, fine grained picture of the varieties of growth regimes in Europe, and how this has gone hand in hand with patterns of structural change and the dynamics of national innovation systems. We disentangle some key nexus between the evolution of innovation, medium-term changes of production, employment, and profitability structures and on their interactions. We focus particularly on disentangling intrinsic and structural factors in the description of growth regimes, shifts in distributive relations and the extent to which these processes have resulted from the European innovation systems falling behind the technological frontier. Ariel Wirkierman is a Research Fellow at the Science Policy Research Unit (SPRU, University of Sussex) working on the EU Horizon 2020 ISIGrowth Project. In particular, he applies and develops Input-Output techniques and simulation models of industrial dynamics to analyse innovation, technical progress, structural change and income distribution. He has previously been a post-doc researcher at the Department of Mathematical Sciences, Mathematical Finance and Econometrics (Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, Italy), designing and implementing algorithms and metrics in complex networks to study industry clusters and node centrality in interindustry networks. Before his doctoral studies he worked as an economic officer at the Ministry of Economy and Production of Argentina, focusing on Regional Input-Output Analysis. Ariel holds a Licentiate in Economics (University of Buenos Aires, Argentina), Master in Economics (National Unviersity of La Plata, Argentina), PhD in Economics (Catholic University of the Sacred Heart).
